2 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

Dear reader,

Welcome to another issue of Heritage Headlines. As we celebrate what Troops are doing nationwide, we also usher in the start of a new Program Year. This year’s theme is “WOVEN.” When you hear the word, you may think of a basket, a tapestry, a potholder made from elastic cords, or maybe even a braid in your hair. Certainly “WOVEN” is represented by these and many other beautiful works of mankind.

The dictionary explains the word “woven” in this way:

1. To unite threads of any kind in such a manner as to form cloth. This is done by crossing the threads by means of a shuttle. The modes of weaving, and the kinds of texture, are various. The threads first laid in length are called the warp; those which cross them in the direction of the breadth are called the weft or woof.

2. To unite anything flexible; as to weave twigs.

3. To unite by intermixture or close connection. And although each of these definitions is correct, American Heritage Girls’ use of the term “WOVEN” springs from the Holy Scripture itself. In the Old Testament, the book of Jeremiah states these words from God to Jeremiah: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations” (Jeremiah 1:5, NIV).

It is thought that Jeremiah was called to his commission as a prophet of God at the age of 20. Although he was 20, God assured him that the Lord had known him since the time he was formed by God, in his mother’s womb. God also states in that verse that He knew the calling on Jeremiah’s life at the time of conception—Jeremiah was to be a prophet. This verse clarifies that God has intentionality when He “weaves” and forms us at conception.

At AHG, we believe God has placed a call on the life of every girl and volunteer. A call on community members, donors, and ministry leaders who support AHG. A call on your life, dear reader. A call that has existed since the time you were conceived within your mother. God wastes nothing. He holds each of His children as sacred and worthy of His calling and His work on earth. He holds YOU sacred and worthy of a unique calling that has been created for you by the Lord God Himself!

Just as God had a call on Jeremiah’s life, He has a call on the life of all who trust in Christ by faith. God can use anyone in the furtherance of His redemptive plan if we are willing to submit to Him and be used by Him.

Are you willing to submit to His call? Do you believe you were WOVEN with purpose to serve and love the Lord? Join me in welcoming this new Program Year and encouraging our girls as unique and dearly loved daughters chosen by God and intricately WOVEN into His almighty plan.

Blessings,

SERVICESTORIES

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE AN ACTIVE CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES

MULTI-TROOP SERVICE TEAMS UP WITH LOCAL FOOD RESOURCE PROJECT

When two AHG Troops multiply their service efforts, only good things can come next. GA0413 teamed up with GA1412 and The Sandwich Project to feed those experiencing food insecurity in their area. Clare and Sophia, Explorers in GA0413 organized the effort as part of the Ida Scudder Level Award. The Troop Girl Members who were unable to attend donated funds to purchase supplies. From deli style to the traditional peanut butter and jelly, both Troops combined made a total of 511 sandwiches. When resourceful AHG Troops work alongside local organizations, the love of Christ shines brightly in a wonderfully practical way!

VIRGINIA TROOP CHARTER ORGANIZATION FAMILY IMPACTED BY DISABILITY

AHG Troops don’t have to look far when they have a heart to serve their community. For the girls of VA2345, God put a need right on their front doorstep. Their Charter Organization pastor and his wife received the love of Christ through the Troop’s willingness to provide lawn work, external house cleaning, and an abundance of smiles! The pastor’s wife then sweetly opened her home to the girls, allowing them to gather round and learn how her disability affects daily life for them and what that will look like in the future as it progresses. The girls asked questions and listened intently. In God’s kindness, this family will have a forever connection of love and care with the Troop girls.

TEXAS TROOP PROVIDES GENEROUS DONATION OF SUPPLIES AND EFFORTS FOR LOCAL HOSPITAL RESPITE FACILITY

When AHG Troops serve their communities, lives are changed. Across the nation, Troops partner with local charities thereby multiplying efforts to serve those in need, often at vulnerable times in their lives. For TX0317, linking arms with the Ballard House in Katy, TX gave them an opportunity to extend practical help in love to families of long-term hospitalized patients. The Ballard House facility offers a place of rest, serenity, and care for family members who must be away from their homes during a loved one’s hospital stay. With many guests means a hefty cleaning schedule for the staff. The Troop Members from TX0317 stepped in providing a generous donation of cleaning supplies. They also rolled up their sleeves to help! The girls cleaned the common areas on both levels of the facility including conference and meeting rooms for the residents’ use.

INCREDIBLE TALES OF LEADERSHIP, VOLUNTEERING AND FRIENDSHIP

HARRIET TUBMAN LEVEL AWARD SPARKS OUTSTANDING RECRUITMENT ARTICLE IN ARIZONA

In order to receive the Harriet Tubman Level Award, Pioneers must either write an article or make a video for the recruitment requirement. Ashley, of AZ1226, found her voice as a writer and sought to not only tell AHG’s story of origin, but also to communicate the urgency and value of AHG’s growth in communities near and far. Ashley highlighted AHG’s unique difference from scouting organizations—the commitment to a Biblical Worldview in raising Godly women of integrity.

She writes, “They create a loving environment in which girls can make faith-filled friendships. Faith is something that is not necessarily built into other scouttype programs […]. American Heritage Girls gives girls the opportunity to meet not only faith-filled peers, but faith-filled women who are amazing role models. […] This program provides a safe, loving environment where girls can explore their skills, interests, and faith through a wide selection of badges. They can step out of their comfort zones and into leadership positions modeled after Jesus’ example of servant-leadership in an encouraging environment. They can learn to work together as a team with direct lessons from Christian principles.”

TROOP HOSTS BRING-A-FRIEND GLOW PARTY

AHG is known for its FUN—and FL1209 took that to the next level by hosting a Bring-A-Friend Night with a SHINE theme to round out their Program Year. These types of Troop events are perfect for giving an open door to new girls with plenty of warm, welcoming smiles—a great vehicle for Troop recruitment! FL1209 went all the way with their event theme featuring glow-in-the-dark punch (quinine found in tonic water provided the glow!), a rockpainting glow-in-the-dark activity, bracelet making, and learning about animals that God designed with “glow powers”. It’s unclear who had more fun, the volunteers, Girl Members, or their guests, but one thing is clear—this was a successful Troop recruiting event with lots of potential growth for the next Program Year!

SOUTH CAROLINA TROOP PARTNERS WITH INTERNATIONAL MISSIONS BOARD

Since AHG is a Troop-based ministry, the opportunities to connect Girl Members with communities local and global are endless. SC2717 maximized their place as a “city on a hill” to bring in a guest speaker, Paula Hemphill formerly with the International Missions Board. Paula graciously hosted a Turkish tea party for the girls and shared her years of experience working in global missions for the sake of the gospel. The girls learned Turkish cultural customs, clothing, and foods—tasting everything from dates, apricots, mint tea, and other treats from the area. While this special opportunity fulfilled part of their Mission Minded Badge, it also gave the girls a chance to take what they had learned home to their families thereby deepening their awareness of God’s vast kingdom in many areas of the world.

BADGESTORIES

LEARNING LIFE SKILLS AND BUILDING CONFIDENCE

MEDICAL BADGE

All of God’s creation is perfectly designed by Him to function in its own purposes. However, when sin entered the world so did disease, injury, and decay. God in His grace has given mankind the ability to learn about the functions of the body and has revealed ways to provide care through the practices of medicine and medical technology. Each generation brings more innovations to see us through this life as we prepare spiritually for the next life.

AHG badgework not only teaches life skills to girls, but it also gives opportunities to learn about God’s design for the body. OK2810 in Stillwater, OK worked through the Medical Badge this spring in the PI/PA Unit—and they may have some future cardiologists in the group! Whether it was guest speakers from a local chiropractic clinic or making playdough models of the human cardiological system, the girls took this learning—well, to heart! As with all older Program Level requirements, the girls also taught what they had learned to the Explorers of the Troop. Every good AHG leader knows that fresh air does a body good, so they took their badgework outdoors when the weather cooperated. Autumn, a Patriot in the Troop, said, “I learned that the [human] heart beats over 100,000 times and pumps about 2,000 gallons of blood daily.” What a gift for girls to understand their Divine design!

14 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

ART HISTORY BADGE

God is the ultimate artist—His color combinations, forms, and textures are without compare! He gave many of us a love and talent for creating art. Take a peek back in time to see the revelation of art through the ages.

It’s never too early to inspire young artists! The Tenderhearts of OH3722 recently embarked on their journey through the Art History Badge studying the work of Michelangelo, Van Gogh, Rembrandt, and George Seurat. These young ladies embraced each style with wonder and joy. Allie, a first grader, said she would even consider becoming an artist when she grows up. They also tied in the Biblical Truth from Psalm 139 of being made fearfully and wonderfully by God. The finale of their work? Each girl drew a self-portrait— knowing that God created them even more beautifully than any drawing or painting could ever represent. Savannah said the self-portrait project made me think “about how God made me beautiful, he made me unique (that no one else is like me) and He has given me special talents like singing for Him.”

PEN & PAPER CRAFTS BADGE

Pen and paper arts have historic roots in many cultures. Something as simple as a piece of paper or a pen may surprise you with how many versatile projects can be created. Art techniques with pen and paper include creative printing designs, decorative handwriting, doodling, handmade paper, papier-mâché, folded paper, cut paper, and more.

The Explorer Unit of WV0058 knows how to combine fun learning with tasty local outings! While working on the Pen & Paper Crafts Badge this spring, they explored various projects, techniques, and creative ways to craft art and gifts. As an added bonus, their guest artist happened to also be a Chik-Fil-A employee and was able to secure lunch for the girls. So after learning her craft of book page folding, the girls enjoyed some delicious chicken. Talk about a tasty achievement! So how do those skills shine forward for the Explorer Unit? One said she would like to teach these skills to her own kids someday, specifically origami—the Japanese art of paper-folding. And their family members can expect some homemade gifts for Christmas now that they have mastered a new crafting skill!

CHARTER ORGANIZATION SPOTLIGHT

CALVARY CHAPEL CHINO HILLS

CHINO HILLS, CALIFORNIA CA3234

This issue, AHG is excited to shine a light on Calvary Chapel Chino Hills in Chino Hills, CA, home to CA3234. Charter Representative Austin Andrade and Troop Coordinator Erin Erb reflect on the past year of chartering an AHG Troop at their church and the significant impact AHG has had on their faith community.

ARGUABLY THE MOST IMPACTFUL FORCE IN THE WELL-BEING OF AN AHG TROOP IS THE CHARTER ORGANIZATION.

Every Troop is owned by a Charter Organization, which is typically a church, school, or similarly-aligned Christian organization. Without the support of their Charter Organization, an AHG Troop would not exist. When the Charter Organization and Charter Representative are involved beyond simply providing meeting space, the AHG Ministry can have an incredible impact on the outreach of the organization.

16 | AMERICAN HERITAGE
GIRLS

WHY DID YOUR CHURCH DECIDE TO CHARTER AN AHG TROOP?

Our Senior Pastor, Jack Hibbs, and his wife Lisa have, for several years, seen a need for building up intentional families. Calvary Chapel Chino Hills’ mission is to uphold unchanging Biblical truth that breaks the powers of darkness, transforms lives, and equips the church to stand as salt and light in our world. Part of transforming lives and equipping the Church is to teach practical skills to kids alongside their development of spiritual character. In our pursuit to lead families well, God brought American Heritage Girls to our attention for research, discussion, and eventually a ministry within the church. Our aim is to strengthen the family and equip the next generation of girls with courage, patience, and wisdom.

HOW MANY YEARS HAS YOUR CHURCH HAD AN AHG TROOP?

This year will complete our first year as a Troop.

HOW HAVE YOU SEEN GROWTH IN YOUR YOUTH/FAMILY/WOMEN’S MINISTRY PROGRAMMING SINCE CHARTERING AN AHG TROOP?

The transformational changes taking place within the body of Christ at Calvary Chapel Chino Hills is still in its early stages. However, since introducing both Trail Life and American Heritage Girls to our body, we are already seeing notable changes within our church family. These two organizations serve as one-third of our family ministries. In addition, we have created Liberty Education, a ministry to reclaim the minds of our children and teens for Christ, by guiding families in the academic learning process. We also are continuing to develop resources for intentional family time in the home.

The fruit of these efforts is noticeable in many ways. There is an increase in participation in seasonal programming for kids, students serving around the church and community, a liveliness of fellowship before and after services, and the closeness of parents with their children.

HOW ELSE HAS AHG AFFECTED YOUR ORGANIZATION’S MINISTRY EFFORTS?

AHG has also inspired the cross-ministry efforts around the church. Our girls have cleaned Children’s Ministry classrooms and toys and served our Special Needs Ministry with crafts and presentations. They packed Christmas gifts for our Missions Ministry and performed for and assisted our Senior Ministry. Most recently, the girls volunteered for our Young Mothers Ministry where they lead a devotional and worship for small children. Our effort is to train up our girls to serve “heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord [they] will receive the reward of the inheritance; for [they] serve the Lord Christ” (Colossians 3:23-24, NKJV).

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER POTENTIAL CHARTER ORGANIZATIONS LOOKING TO CHARTER AN AHG TROOP?

The process for starting a Troop requires patience but is attainable with the right team. As trusted ministry leaders provided recommendations, it seemed as if our board was handpicked by God. We prayed extensively, met regularly, and labored together with great attitudes and optimistic spirits. Our starting point was knowing that despite the work ahead, God had already guaranteed “good” (Romans 8:28).

Charter Organizations serve a crucial role in the AHG Ministry, as they own and operate AHG Troops. Though volunteers implement the AHG Program, the Charter Organization is able to customize their AHG Troop to best accomplish their ministry goals.

PSALM 139: 13-15

CELEBRATING EVERY GIRL’S ROLE IN GOD’S INTRICATE PLAN THIS PROGRAM YEAR

18 | AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS

A skillful weaver positions his natural-colored threads up and down on the loom. Then he begins weaving richly colored threads across it, in and out. The colorful threads are WOVEN, broken, exchanged, and WOVEN again to bring forth the image from the tapestry. From the plain colored threads that provide structure to the vividly colored threads that bring life to the artwork, together, they create a masterpiece of strength and beauty. Once a tapestry is complete and hung, it is breathtaking and changes the atmosphere of the room—producing a joy that overcomes the dark walls beneath it.

Every American Heritage Girl is a colorful masterpiece WOVEN together thread by thread by the Skillful Maker. God strung the parts of every girl’s life together as she was being formed. Through, over, and under, God knit her personality, character, skills, and giftings together to form the unique person He has created her to be, encouraging her to accomplish much for His glory.

This 2023-2024 AHG Program Year, not only will every girl learn how God has WOVEN together her identity as an individual, but how God has WOVEN her life with those around her to lead and influence her family, Troop, and community! Join American Heritage Girls in building up the next generation of women who know they are wonderfully and fearfully made by God and bring glory to His name.

WOVEN on Purpose

To be WOVEN is to be intricately and purposefully created. God designed the most majestic mountains and the unknown depths of the seas. He placed countless constellations in time and space. He formed the most distant galaxies unseen to the naked human eye, but we, His people, remain His

most treasured, beloved creation. It makes sense, then, that in our current world, the most precious gift of our creation would be under such attack. The sanctity of unborn life, the dignity of disabled, ill, or elderly life, the beauty of male and female creation—they all fall prey as victims of uncertainty or downright disagreement in our world. In order to counter this culture, it’s up to ministries, like American Heritage Girls, to come alongside families to educate, encourage, and empower the next generation of girls to stand for God’s timeless Truths.

This generation of girls faces an innumerable amount of cultural confusion, conflict, and uncertainty. But God’s intricate plan for His people isn’t uncertain—after all, He is all-knowing. It is, instead, the sinful nature of humanity to stray from God, to question His intentions, His nature, His actions and analyze it all through our own fragile understanding. “Did God really say…” or “Did God really mean…” Sound familiar? It should! We can trace this sinful nature back to the very beginning, to the story of Adam and Eve. In Genesis 3, Eve is prompted by the serpent to question God, asking “Did God really say ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” Our culture places this same question mark next to God’s Truths and makes everything subjective to individual interpretation. Fueled by the incitement of the enemy, our humanistic worldview is narrowed to our own short-sighted lens, and we fail to recognize real Truth for what it is. But God! He gives us the tools to overcome uncertainty and confusion in His Word and by the gift of the Holy Spirit. With our feet firmly planted on Him, the Solid Rock, we know humans make mistakes, not God. We know, because we are His most beloved creation, that we are made, WOVEN, on purpose.

AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS | 19

WOVEN with Purpose

With this Godly Truth in mind, our girls can make sense of what is uncertain in the world. This mindset is known as a “Biblical Worldview”. Raising a Godly girl starts with establishing a foundational Biblical Worldview, that is, a worldview formed in Truth and considered in every facet of her life. Thanks to a Biblical Worldview, she knows she was WOVEN on purpose, with purpose because she trusts God’s promises. AHG firmly believes in giving girls a worldview that hinges on God’s Word. Why? Because a Biblical Worldview is an everlasting source of authority and wisdom— Biblical Truths stand the test of time. A Biblical Worldview will never be obsolete for our girls, because His Word is always relevant.

Today’s culture seems to be at a fever pitch, a breaking point. There are some topics that we, as parents and ministers to young children, never in a million years thought we would have to address. Yet here we stand. Issues of mental health and suicide, sexuality and gender identity, the dignity of all human life from womb to tomb—they’re topics and conversations happening at a younger and younger age no matter how intentionally we try to shield our children from the darkness.

We cannot know what the conversations or cultural beliefs of tomorrow will be—but we know what God believes. We know where He calls us to stand—on the path of righteousness. Applying a Biblical Worldview, no matter the issue, will be a strong first step in quelling confusion, quashing doubt, and recognizing fact from fiction. Incorporating a Biblical Worldview education into your Program Year can be as simple as weekly WOVEN devotional readings at Troop meetings or as robust as embarking on the G.R.I.T. with Grace girl leadership programming. For more on how to aid Troop families develop

and instill a Biblical Worldview, we welcome you to share the free Raising Godly Girls Guide to Biblical Worldview, available on the Raising Godly Girls blog.

WOVEN for a Purpose

Your Troop is on the front lines of today’s culture battle, reinforcing every girl’s identity as a daughter of the King. In a world seeking to undermine the value and dignity of human life, our Creator reminds us in His Word: “Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows,” (Luke 12:7, NIV).

As we embark on another Program Year together, we are united in the effort to uphold the purpose of every girl entrusted by God to partake in this ministry. While AHG guides girls to discover their life’s passions through badgework and leadership curriculum, it is the ultimate goal, the Mission of AHG, to build women of integrity through service to God, family, community and country. It is the fervent prayer of every Board Member, Staff Member, volunteer, Charter Organization, and parent that each girl who encounters AHG would come away knowing that she was WOVEN by her Creator with purpose, for a purpose. It is only through the merciful love of God that each girl will come to know His incredible and purpose-filled plan for her life.

This Program Year, seek out ways to celebrate the life and uphold the Godly, feminine design of every girl in your Troop. Go a step further and extend this Godly love to the under-served in your community. Your Troop can be a champion of God’s love for all life. Seek out opportunities for service projects that support pregnancy care, hospice care, elderly care, and homeless care. Being God’s hands and feet on earth means upholding the dignity of life, in all its ages and stages, through intentional and

tender loving care. AHG is honored to partner with The Radiance Foundation in the creation of the “Respect Life” Service Spotlight resource. This document, outlining how Troops can introduce lifeaffirming conversations, activities, and service, along with other WOVEN-related materials can be found on AHGfamily.

WOVEN Together

The 2023-2024 Program Year is sure to be a display of God’s faithfulness to His children and His ministry. As your Troop seeks to plan another year of faith, service, and fun, know that you are WOVEN together with tens of thousands of other members seeking to fulfill the same mission goal—to build women of integrity. Troop volunteers, Staff, Board Members, Charter Organizations, and families are united and ready to answer this call. With the Holy Spirit’s provision and guidance, AHG is doing the hard work of building God’s Kingdom here on earth— raising up a generation of girls who know they are WOVEN on purpose, with purpose, for a purpose.

(Final reporting for the 2022-2023 Program Year)

WHAT DID YOU FIND MOST REWARDING IN EARNING THE STARS & STRIPES AWARD?

As I went through this process, I learned to trust God to provide and to work things out in the best ways. God was so good to provide the funds and this opportunity to work with such an amazing organization. God also worked out the timing of this project so beautifully. I grew in awe of God and His providence throughout this project. One big revelation I had while working on this project had to do with the AHG Mission Statement, which is, “Building women of integrity through service to God, family, community, and country.” The program is called American Heritage Girls, but the mission statement says that its goal is to build women. Working on the Stars & Stripes Award is a very adult experience. It is the perfect way to go from being an American Heritage Girl to being a woman of integrity. The Stars & Stripes Award is the embodiment of the Mission Statement.

“I know that God has given me special gifts and passions that I want to use for His glory. Some of these include a great understanding of math and a heart to fight for the unborn and to take care of them and their mothers. I have been able to use this in my Abigail Adams Level Award project, as well as my Stars & Stripes Award project and I am so thankful to God for that.”

ALUMNASPOTLIGHT MEET JACKIE MCCUTCHEON

Since 1995, the Mission of American Heritage Girls has been to build women of integrity. While the AHG Program targets those in girlhood, the sincerity and faith-filled spirit that is nurtured and grown through AHG continues as girls develop and mature into women.

When a young woman grows through the AHG Program for 11 years, the world can expect the fruit of that investment to be sweet and nourishing to those around her. From time after time reciting the AHG Creed to countless hours spent serving those in need through compassion, mercy, and ingrained love, Jackie McCutcheon seeks to live out AHG’s Mission as a Godly woman of integrity.

Raised in Georgia, Jackie called Troop GA0827 in Suwanee, GA home from Pathfinder all the way through Patriot Levels. Raised in a loving Catholic family, Jackie’s mother, Linda, was part of the courageous individuals who started her Troop through the Catholic Church of St. Monica. The McCutcheon family, in partnership with their church and AHG Troop, sought to sacrificially live out Christ’s mission to love others. Jackie’s upbringing seamlessly wove daily life and discipleship together, so she understood how important it was to live out her faith at all times.

McCutcheon warmly remembers the Cooking Badge and Camping Badge experiences—both traditional AHG girl favorites! What were her most lasting Troop-life take-aways?

“I learned a lot about fire safety and wilderness survival skills, how to be a good leader, and the words of the AHG Creed specifically gave me a list of characteristics that I work to embody each day.” Jackie made lasting friendships through AHG and seeks to be the kind of friend others would want on their side.

In addition to the stellar outdoor skills and camping opportunities that come through AHG involvement, Jackie also especially loved the motherdaughter tea events giving her sister, her mother, and Jackie a chance to develop cherished memories. Putting on their Sunday best was always fun for the girls too! Troop motherdaughter tea gatherings also foster fun and giggles in sister relationships as well. Jackie’s sister is two years younger, so even now they love thinking back on those cherished

times together in their AHG Troop life. Jackie’s relationship with her mother is strong, so she is grateful that her Troop invested time and resources into events to strengthen those connections.

Troop volunteers are a beautiful vehicle for impacting AHG girls through their selfless hearts pouring out love, examples of good leadership, and caring guidance. “I had wonderful leaders, and each impacted me in their own way,”

Jackie recalls. “I learned that a great leader is first a great follower who listens to others, is kind and respectful, and is a team player always.” Those same leaders also gave her many opportunities to serve those in need through various community engagement projects. One such project centered around an Atlanta-based organization called Restoration House, a facility that supports women and children who

are in need of a home, food, and loving community. This overnight service project had Jackie serving meals, facilitating an ice cream party, and caring for the kid residents. This practical way of showing others Christ’s love still resonates with Jackie today—she even has a heart to go back and serve with Restoration House as an adult! Jackie feels the wealth of service she did through her AHG Troop sealed into her heart a humble understanding of what it means to love others as Jesus did, because she is made in the image of God the same as those she served.

With the McCutcheons as a committed AHG family, Jackie felt confident to embark upon the Stars & Stripes Award process—a journey that would push her to new heights as a young woman but also brought a trusted mentor into her life. Each Stars & Stripes Award Candidate is assigned a mentor to lead her through the process, to guide her project, and to keep her on track. Jackie’s mentor, Joyce, is “the leader who definitely had the deepest impact on my life. She always pushed me to be my best, but in a gentle and loving way. She was a constant source of support for me during that time. I always felt like she had my back. She wanted me to grow […] and she was going to help me in whatever way I needed.” Jackie now describes Joyce as “an intelligent, knowledgeable woman who is incredibly hard-working.”

Upon finishing her last year in AHG, Jackie launched into the world armed with grace-filled tools like mercy, a heart for service, and a place in the Catholic National Evangelization Teams (NET) Ministry group. She initially committed to nine months of serving on a retreat team but loved her experience so much that she doubled her time with NET Ministries, serving on a discipleship team in the latter half. Jackie recently finished her time with NET and remembers gratefully the lives of young girls she invested in during those 18 months. She feels that AHG prepared her well for work in Catholic missions because she came away with leadership skills,

communication skills, prioritizing and teamwork skills—but most importantly, Jackie was fully ready to be the hands and feet of Jesus on a daily basis. With her own identity firmly rooted in Christ, Jackie was eager to see the Holy Spirit actively working through NET teams. Whether it be leading a younger girl through Bible study, or handling a small group retreat discussion, Jackie knows the Lord used her mightily to impact His Kingdom. Even now, AHG Creed words like “Compassionate” and “Helpful” still pour from Jackie’s life!

Today, you can find Jackie’s smiling face serving customers at her local Chick-fil-A before embarking on yet another Godled journey—studying Psychology this fall in college and continuing her missions work as a volunteer. In a world fraught with concern for our nation’s next generation of adults, Jackie McCutcheon walks a life consistent with both the AHG Mission and Christ’s heart. God weaves His children into the fabric of the world to love and serve, so if you’re paying attention, you’ll see them selflessly living to reflect God’s glory. This is the bountiful harvest of 11 years well-spent in the AHG Program.

ANNOUNCING: THE 2022-2023 PROGRAM YEAR

AHG

NATIONAL ADULT

RECOGNITION RECIPIENTS

The Mission of building women of integrity is an incredible charge from the Lord given to American Heritage Girls. This task is textured with victories and difficulties, giving God a chance to show His beautiful ways of blessing the ministry with faithful and capable partners. The AHG National Adult Recognitions are a small way to recognize some of these incredible people and the outstanding work they do. AHG volunteers are invested in fulfilling the Mission of AHG, and without their partnership in building women of integrity, AHG’s impact on the lives of countless girls would not exist.

Since 1996, the AHG National Awards have grown in depth and breadth offering volunteers a framework for establishing goals while providing a tangible gift of gratitude including uniform pins, awards, and more. In response to the Lord’s call for us to honor those who serve His Kingdom faithfully, AHG strives to follow God’s leading in this by honoring the dedicated people who joyfully serve Him and His chosen. Each year, a selection committee of AHG volunteers reviews all qualified nominees and then casts their vote for the top recipient in each award category. This year, AHG is thrilled to announce two volunteers were nominated and selected in two award categories: the Unit Leader of the Year Award and the Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award.

Please join AHG in congratulating the recipients of the 2022-2023 Program Year AHG National Adult Recognitions!

To learn more about AHG National Awards, visit AHGresource, AHG’s online resource library or read more in the AHG Volunteer Handbook, available for purchase in the AHGstore.

The Outstanding Volunteer of the Year exemplifies the AHG Oath and Creed and lives by the AHG Statement of Faith. The volunteer displays the love of Christ and maintains healthy relationships with the Charter Organization, Troop Board Members, Unit Leaders, Girl Members, and AHG families. They care for their community as an active citizen through service and patriotism. This volunteer contributes to the growth and development of the AHG Program and exemplifies dedication through the giving of time, talent, and creativity.

“I believe Ms. Marie is a model for all Troop Shepherds, taking care of each member of our Troop, girls and adults, and lifting us all up in prayer. She encourages us to call her if we ever need anything. She has attended all of our Troop meetings and been with us during the Diocesan Boards of Review and Award Ceremonies. Her guidance has been so important to our Troop family. We could not have gotten where we are today without the prayers and loving support of Ms. Marie… For Ms. Marie’s 80th birthday, she went camping with the Troop for the very first time in her life! She had her first s’more, led prayer and talks, and even out-hiked us! She tirelessly dedicates herself to her work and mission of bringing those around her closer to Christ! To know her is to love her!”

Troops have the opportunity to nominate a Unit Leader who has gone above and beyond in serving his or her Unit and living out the AHG Mission of building women of integrity. This Unit Leader displays the love of Christ through showing patience, flexibility, and meeting girls where there are developmentally. This award requires three letters of support, from one adult and two girls. Unit Leaders must be well equipped by meeting the membership requirements and completing training for their specific Unit Level.

“Mrs. Stone exemplifies her love for God, family, country, and service to her community in every aspect of what she does, from teaching her Explorers about faith, the importance of family and country, and how service impacts others. In every action she carries out the 10 AHG Creed words to a ‘T’; she is truly a role model for the girls and adults…[She] has dedicated countless hours to helping to grow the Mission of AHG. She pours her heart into each one of her Explorer girls and shows them the love of Jesus as a woman of integrity. Adult Members also seek her advice and guidance. She has helped advise our Charter Representative on some difficult situations within our Troop. Throughout these challenging times, she would lean on the Lord and pray for guidance. In the end, our Troop continues to thrive and grow.”

HIGHIMPACT INSIGHT

Elane Sims has been a volunteer with IL4605 since 2020. She has been the Event Coordinator since late 2021 for local Troops in the Chicagoland Area Team of Illinois.

HOW DO PROGRAM YEAR THEMES PROMOTE UNITY?

Program Year Themes are a connecting thread to any Troop. If you’re wondering what you have in common with other local Troops or Troops across the country, start with the Program Year Theme. Each local Troop is a unique blend of individuals, ideas, events, faith, service, and fun! Whether you’re guiding your Girl Members to make connections with distant pen pals, if you have a family transferring into your Troop from another state, or you’re looking for mutually beneficial activities for a Multi-Troop event, the Program Year Theme is always a great common denominator that weaves all American Heritage Girl Troops together.

WHAT DOES THE WOVEN THEME MEAN TO YOU?

The focal point of the WOVEN Program Year Theme is that until God calls you to glory, He is constantly at work in the tapestry of your life. He knew each of us, and who we would be while He knitted us together in our mothers’ wombs. He saw each of us as a completed masterpiece before we were born. He created us fearfully and wonderfully, but He didn’t stop there. He weaves our lives together. He anticipates the frayed strands and thinning fabric, but in His infinite grace, He bolsters us through Scripture and brings us comfort with the Holy Spirit. He strengthens us and gives us color and texture through experience, people, country, community, church, and our Troops.

HOW CAN TROOPS INCORPORATE THE WOVEN THEME INTO RECRUITMENT EVENTS THIS SUMMER?

I think of the Body of Christ, and how each member has differing gifts and is created for a purpose. A body does not function optimally without all its parts.

Each Girl Member and volunteer has something unique to contribute to their local Troop, their Area Team, and to their community. Leaning into this truth, I would hope that Troops would embrace the BELONG Recruitment Program, understanding that it is through new members being WOVEN into our Troops we can accomplish much more to honor and glorify God. There is another girl, another young woman, another mom, an empty-nester, a widow out there who BELONGS in the fabric of your Troop.

Learn more about the BELONG Recruitment Program on AHGfamily.

WHAT ROLE DOES THE THEME PLAY IN THE TROOP YEAR PLANNING PROCESS?

In my local Troop, our Board schedules its annual planning meeting after the Program Year Theme has been announced. It’s that important! The theme influences many of the opportunities we will weave into the year from Patch Programs such as Respect Life, True Girl, and Presence Point’s Shepherd Leadership Program to badges such as Textile Arts and Identity. I’m particularly excited to explore Project Lydia for fundraising.

IN YOUR EXPERIENCE, WHAT DO GIRLS ENJOY MOST ABOUT A PROGRAM YEAR THEME?

Switching up the theme means new decorations, fashion opportunities, and ways for girls to be innovative. I haven’t met a girl who doesn’t like to shop or peruse new merch! Each year the AHGstore comes out with beautifully designed t-shirts, bracelets, and stickers centered around the Program Year Theme. Any of these items can be gifted to Girl Members or volunteers for their efforts and service provided to your local

Troop. If you haven’t had the opportunity to browse the WOVEN selection, I would highly recommend it! If your Troop is operating on a smaller budget, check out the Free to Grow Patch Program. Girls are able to design their own shirts highlighting attributes God has WOVEN into their identity. For me personally, I have been looking forward to meeting EWE-nique, the WOVEN Program Year Theme mascot!

ANY CREATIVE IDEAS TROOPS CAN PUT INTO THEIR PLANS THIS PROGRAM YEAR?

One particularly creative idea comes from a Multi-Troop event I was able to attend in early 2022. Then-Pioneer Dana in IL1412 hosted a service and social opportunity incorporating “plarning”. “Plarning” is the art of weaving plastic bags together to create mats used by community programs aiding the homeless. Girls also made hand-tied blankets for children in hospitals through the Linus Project. Efforts were multiplied by inviting other Girl Members from the area. Not only did girls have a marvelous time meeting and greeting, they upheld our Oath by serving their community.

Further, there is an abundance of “EWE-nique” ideas in the Program Year Theme Guide for each of the different program emphases. I also recommend Troops reach out to each other, their Area Team Members, and Troop Support Specialists. I strongly encourage you to forge those relationships. Seek to weave in those opportunities for connection. Let’s see what God does when we’re WOVEN together.

STAFF GATHERS IN CINCINNATI FOR ANNUAL STAFF RETREAT

The AHG Staff is made up of over 50 individuals located across the nation. These men and women login each day and offer their many gifts and talents (web development, curriculum writing, events planning, customer service, accounting, and more) to benefit the ministry and ultimately, God’s Kingdom. Each year, the staff gathers for its annual retreat—a time of prayer, vision casting, strategic planning, and connection. This year the entire staff gathered at the AHG, Inc. Office in Cincinnati, Ohio—a welcomed treat for those who typically spend their remote days working solo! This time of fellowship provided a funfueled backdrop for some serious goalsetting and strategic planning for the next two years.

AHG NATIONAL BOARD OF TRUSTEES SETS MILESTONE GROWTH GOAL

As culture shifts and girls are stripped of more and more of their girlhood, AHG has been a Godly safe haven. Through Christ-centered programming, intensive volunteer vetting, and prayerful support of alternative Charter Organizations, AHG has proven it’s ready to open its arms to girls in need. For years, the AHG Ministry has been praying for epidemic growth. Since 2021, AHG has seen this rapid growth. In the 2021-2022 Program Year, AHG experienced a 47% membership increase. In 2022-2023 membership climbed again. For the 2023-2024 Program Year, the AHG National Board of Trustees has set the goal of 75,000 members. For the 2024-2025 Program Year, 100,000 members. By 2035—one million members! With this goal comes intense strategic planning, creativity, and prayer around membership retention, new Troop development, and marketing efforts. Please join the AHG Staff and Board in continuing prayer around how to utilize this ministry, God’s ministry, to bring His gospel message to even more girls, families, and communities nationwide.

A NOTE FROM NANCY DENDRAMIS, AHG National Board of Trustees Member | Cincinnati, OH

Since ancient times, fabric has been woven on a loom. A loom can be as simple as a heavy paper card with notches on all sides or as complicated as a substantial structure with a warp beam, heddles, harnesses or shafts, shuttle, reed and take-up roll. The end product could be a fabric as heavy as a rug for the floor or as light as silk to be worn as clothing. When the weaver is done, the product is removed from the loom. The loom is an integral part of the process, but is not a part of the fabric itself.

The Scriptures refer to man as an “image-bearer” (Genesis 1:26) who has been “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14) and “intricately woven in the depths of the earth” (Psalms 139:15). Based on Scripture, weaving begins in the mother’s womb, and, in God’s plan, is meant to continue in the sanctity of the family and the church. The weaver is God Himself.

Weaving is an intimate process between the weaver, the loom, and the fabric. Weaving takes time, is intentional, and is meant to produce a product with purpose. The writer of Scripture used this very-familiar imagery of weaving and the loom to describe a relationship between the weaver, the loom, and uniqueness and intentional purpose of the fabric.

American Heritage Girls becomes part of the loom as the ministry comes alongside the family and the church to participate in the “weaving” process. The AHG National Board, as part of American Heritage Girls, is an inconspicuous part of the loom’s structure. The National Board serves to cast the long-term vision for the ministry (in collaboration with the Executive Director) and serves to oversee and safeguard both the vision and the ministry as the weaving process occurs.

STAFFSCOOP

Madison Burn, Troop Support Specialist

How long have you been working at AHG?

Two years

What do you do in your position?

I work with an amazing team to support Troops by speaking directly with volunteers to answer questions, provide coaching, and pray over each Troop.

What’s your favorite part of working at AHG?

It’s a blessing to work with a Staff who serves The Lord. I also love hearing about each Troop’s exciting adventures and accomplishments!

What is your favorite Bible verse?

James 2:24, NABRE “See how a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.”

What is your favorite part about visiting or being involved in a Troop?

When I was an AHG Girl Member, my favorite parts of AHG were going camping, forming friendships, service projects, and learning new things. Each time I’ve visited a Troop as an adult, my favorite part has been witnessing the joy that radiates from the girls, especially when the older girls are leading the younger girls in a game or song.

If you look closely at a woven fabric, you can see that the lines of interlaced thread run in perpendicular directions, creating a cross-like pattern. The prayer of each Board Member would be that American Heritage Girl would mature into a woman of integrity with the cross patterned on her heart.

“See how a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.”

(James 2:24, NABRE)
