Safety Around the Race

Brought to you by:

Be careful out there!

Stay safe around the race with these tips brought to you by Workers Compensation Fund:

Always look for clearly marked WCF crosswalks when crossing the course.

Please listen to all directions from WCF course marshals and crossing guards.

Always wait until you see the last police car following the race caravan before you consider crossing the course.

Please do not lean over the fencing to take a picture. You could injure a rider or end up injuring yourself. Hold your children’s hands when crossing the course or when the race is passing by, and keep a close eye on them at all times. Please make sure all pets are on a leash at all times. When parking on the course, please make sure all four tires are completely clear of the pavement and that you are parked legally.

While we know it is popular to place slogans on the climbs along the route, we ask that you please refrain from using any type of paint on the road. Be aware that as the race approaches, the race route will be open to traffic, and it creates a dangerous situation for spectators on the roadway.

AWARD JERSEYS

Overall Leader

Sprint

King of the Mountain

The origins of the yellow jersey go back to the first sponsor of the Tour de France, L’Auto, a daily newspaper printed on yellow paper. The yellow jersey is awarded at the end of each stage to the rider with the best general classification time (not necessarily the stage winner) and to distinguish the overall race leader.

Often called the race within the race, the sprinter’s competition awards points both at designated sprint lines on the course as well as at the finish line of the stage. The rider with the most sprint points is awarded the jersey—losing it if another rider proves quicker at grabbing sprint points as the tour progresses. The fight for the sprinter’s jersey gives powerful riders who don’t excel at climbing a chance to shine on the flats.

The Tour of Utah has some of the most intense climbing terrain in North America. The King of the Mountain jersey is awarded to the rider who accumulates the most points by being among the first three riders crossing KOM checkpoints at the top of all designated climbs throughout the course. The KOM jersey honors riders who know how to hammer up Utah’s steepest ascents.

Best Young Rider

Most Aggressive Rider

Fan Favorite

Intended to reward and encourage the young lions of cycling, the Best Young Rider jersey competition is for all participants under the age of twenty-three. The jersey is awarded to the rider in this age category with the lowest cumulative time.

Each day, the most determined rider will earn the Most Aggressive Rider jersey. It may be on a climb, on a break, following a crash, or a severe mechanical error. In any case, it will be awarded to a cyclist who demonstrates–in the face of all adversity–the greatest desire to win in that day’s stage.

The Fan Favorite jersey recipient is chosen by fans on the Tour of Utah’s website after each day’s stage. Each stage will have unique voting subjects and, on the final day of the tour, the Best Overall Fan Favorite will be selected.
