Tendencias disruptivas como la Inteligencia Artificial están revolucionando la forma en que se hacen los negocios, tanto en Guatemala como en Estados Unidos.

En Guatemala, cada vez más empresas están reconociendo el valor de innovar en sus operaciones, automatizando tareas que permiten a los empleados enfocarse en actividades más estratégicas o creativas.

Del mismo modo, en Estados Unidos observamos un creciente interés y aplicación de diversas tecnologías en las corporaciones. Esto se debe a su capacidad para analizar grandes cantidades de datos y generar información valiosa que puede impulsar la toma de decisiones informadas.

En resumen, en todo el mundo se experimenta un cambio significativo, en el cual, las empresas que logran adaptarse e implementar estas innovaciones tecnológicas estarán mejor posicionadas para enfrentar los desafíos del futuro y aprovechar al máximo las oportunidades que se presenten.

In Guatemala, more and more companies are recognizing the value of innovating their operations and automating tasks, which allows employees to focus on more strategic or creative activities.

Likewise, in the US, we have observed a growing interest in diverse technologies and their applications in corporations. This is due to their ability to analyze large amounts of data and generate valuable information that can drive informed decision-making.

Progreso lidera el uso de tecnología constructiva con la primera impresora 3D COBOD en la región

“Pionero en impulsar tecnologías innovadoras, Progreso revoluciona el sector de construcción con un sistema de fabricación de elementos y estructuras de concreto a través de modelos 3D generados con software CAD.” Progreso, una compañía líder en cemento, materiales y soluciones para la construcción, ha dado un paso audaz hacia el futuro de la construcción al presentar la primera impresora 3D marca COBOD de concreto en el país y la región.

Este innovador equipo que tiene el potencial de transformar la industria de la construcción se basa en una tecnología de vanguardia que permite la creación de estructuras a través de modelos 3D generados con software CAD. La impresora 3D funciona mediante la colocación de capas horizontales sobrepuestas de tinta, sin la necesidad de utilizar moldes, manteniendo la integridad de las capas y garantizando una excelente adherencia entre ellas.

La tecnología empleada en la primera impresora 3D en Guatemala y la región es única en su clase, ya que es una impresora BOD-2 tipo “Gantry” que utiliza un sistema que permite dosificar y colocar el concreto con precisión, según la programación del modelo 3D y G-CODE que se tenga. Esta tecnología 10

de impresión 3D, conocida también como manufactura o fabricación aditiva, coloca capas de concreto que se superponen sucesivamente, construyendo elementos y estructuras de forma progresiva.

Este tipo de impresora es uno de los varios tipos que existen a nivel global y es la primera de este tipo y marca operando en Latinoamérica. Permite construir objetos desde pequeña hasta gran escala, aunque el tamaño de los proyectos no es su única virtud. También, lo es su capacidad y el potencial de construir geometrías especiales que no se logran con la colocación convencional de concreto usando formaletas.

Otra característica valiosa es su contribución a la construcción sostenible ya que permite trabajar con más seguridad, generando menos ruido y menos desperdicios. Su eficiencia también es notable, ya que requiere de tres a cuatro personas para colocar 2 toneladas métricas por hora de material, dependiendo de las condiciones de impresión.

Plinio Estuardo Herrera, gerente de Investigación y Desarrollo de Progreso, comenta sobre este hito: “La impresión 3D está cambiando las reglas del juego en la industria del diseño y la construcción en el mundo. Implementar estas innovaciones tecnológicas en los sistemas constructivos y liderar este cambio en Guatemala y la región, nos genera mucho entusiasmo hacia el trabajo que hacemos y fomenta en nuestra cultura organizacional la innovación como una de sus principales competencias”.

Hasta ahora, se han realizado piezas que van desde pequeños elementos urbanos hasta módulos de mayor tamaño, como paradas de autobús.

También se desarrolló un prototipo “Alpha”, que es una edificación de usos múltiples con techo liviano.

Innovación en procesos de construcción El prototipo “Alpha” es resultado de una estrecha colaboración entre Progreso X (la aceleradora corporativa de Progreso), el Centro de Investigación y Desarrollo de Progreso (CID) y la startup 3DCP Group de Dinamarca. Este proyecto ha demostrado el potencial que tienen las impresoras 3D de tinta para revolucionar la construcción de edificaciones de manera eficiente, sostenible y resiliente.

3DCP Group es una empresa de ingeniería y firma de arquitectura que imprime concreto en 3D y fue seleccionada en el Exponential Changemakers (ECM) 2022, programa que es impulsado por Progreso X. En noviembre del 2022 se imprimieron los muros del pre-prototipo de módulo de vivienda no habitable dentro del almacén de la Pedrera, zona 6, Ciudad de Guatemala.

Progreso, por más de 124 años, ha demostrado su compromiso con la innovación, impulsando tecnologías disruptivas y avanzadas en la producción de cemento, concreto y otros materiales de construcción. La adquisición de la primera impresora 3D COBOD es testimonio de su enfoque en proporcionar las mejores soluciones Business in Action 2023

para contribuir en el futuro de la construcción.

“No es posible desarrollar el mejor producto sin contar con el equipo adecuado para imprimir, especialmente si la actividad principal es la producción de materiales de construcción de la mejor calidad. Progreso está liderando el camino hacia la impresión 3D con la instalación de la primera impresora COBOD en la región. Gracias a esta innovación, podemos experimentar y aprender más de la tinta para la construcción, así como aplicarla en nuevos prototipos y sistemas constructivos”, indica Gabriela Rodas, gerente de proyecto de Progreso X. Esta no es la primera vez que Progreso se distingue por ser pionero en impulsar tecnologías en la región. Por más de 120 años, ha usado tecnología de punta en la producción de cemento, cal, concreto, agregados y otros materiales, así como soluciones para la industria de la construcción.

Progreso tiene como objetivo liderar el camino hacia la impresión 3D de concreto en la región, lo que le permitirá seguir investigando el desarrollo de la tinta cementante y validar el método constructivo, sin dejar a un lado la sostenibilidad, el aprovechamiento de los recursos y la eficacia del uso de mano de obra.

Progreso leads in the use of constructive technology with the first COBOD (construction of buildings on demand) 3D printer in the region

“A pioneer in driving innovative technologies, Progreso has revolutionized the construction sector with a manufacturing system of concrete elements and structures through 3D models generated by Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.”

Progreso, a leading company in cement, materials and construction solutions, has taken a bold step towards the future of construction by introducing the first concrete COBOD 3D printer in the country and the region. This innovative equipment, which has the potential to transform the construction industry, is based on cutting-edge technology that allows the creation of structures through 3D models generated by CAD software.

The 3D printer works by placing superimposed horizontal layers of ink without the need to use molds, maintaining the integrity of the layers and ensuring excellent adherence between them.

The technology used in the first 3D printer in Guatemala and the region is unique in its kind, as it is a Gantry-type BOD-2 printer that uses a system that allows the concrete to be precisely measured and set according to the programming of the 3D and G-CODE models at hand. This 3D printing technology, also known as additive manufacturing, places successively superimposed layers of concrete, constructing elements and structures in a progressive way.

This type of printer is one of various types that exist 12

globally and is the first of this type and brand in operation in Latin America. It allows constructing objects from small to large scales, although the size of projects is not its only virtue. Also, is its ability and potential to construct special geometries that are not achieved through the conventional setting of concrete using formworks.

Another valuable characteristic is its contribution to sustainable construction, as it allows more safety at work and generates less noise and waste. Its efficiency is also remarkable, as it requires three to four people to set 2 metric tons of material per hour, depending on the conditions of printing.

Plinio Estuardo Herrera, Research and Development Manager at Progreso, comments about this milestone: “3D printing is changing the rules of the game in the design and construction industries around the world. Implementing these technological innovations in the construction systems and spearheading this change in Guatemala and the region generates a lot of enthusiasm for the work we do and promotes innovation as one of the main competences in our organizational culture.”

As of today, some pieces have been constructed, from small urban elements to larger-volume modules such as bus stops. An “Alpha” prototype was also developed, a multiple-purpose building with a light roof.

Innovation in construction processes The “Alpha” prototype is the result of a close relationship between Progreso X (Progreso’s corporate accelerator), Progreso’s Research and Development Center (CID, acronym in Spanish) and the startup 3DCP Group from Denmark. This project has demonstrated the potential that 3D ink Business in Action 2023

3DCP Group is an engineering company and architecture firm that prints concrete in 3D and was selected at the 2022 Exponential Changemakers (ECM) program that is promoted by Progreso X. In November 2022, the walls for the pre-prototype of a non-habitable housing module were printed at La Pedrera’s warehouse in zone 6, Guatemala City.

For more than 124 years, Progreso has demonstrated its commitment to innovation, driving disruptive and advanced technologies for the production of cement, concrete and other construction materials.

Acquiring the first 3D COBOD printer is a testament to its approach to providing the best solutions to contribute to the future of construction.

This is not the first time that Progreso has distinguished itself as a pioneer in driving technologies in the region. For more than 120 years, it has used cutting-edge technology for the production of cement, lime, concrete, aggregates and other materials, as well as solutions for the construction industry.

Progreso has the objective of leading the way towards 3D concrete printing in the region, which will allow it to keep on researching and developing cementitious ink and validate the construction method without ignoring sustainability, the leverage of resources and the efficiency in the use of labor.

Port to Port International Lider en la Exportación de Vehículos Port to Port International (PTP) fue fundada en Delaware, USA en 1998 por Anabel Panayotti. Nuestros orígenes se levantan por la necesidad de transporte y envió de vehículos usados por el cliente hispano a Centroamérica. Al pasar de los años, Port to Port International se fue consolidando como uno de los mayores exportadores de vehículos usados del país y somos un creciente exportador de maquinaria de construcción nueva y usada en Centroamérica.

En noviembre del 2005, debido a nuestro alto volumen de vehículos transportados a Guatemala, Honduras y Costa Rica, PTP empezó a contratar buques a granel para su transporte a Centro América, al igual que el envío de equipo y maquinaria pesada.

Aunque los últimos dos años nos hemos enfrentado a diferentes desafíos como el Coronavirus, si bien, el impacto de la pandemia puedo originar, según los expertos, la crisis financiera más profunda desde la II Guerra Mundial, este también afectó nuestras operaciones creando políticas antes inexistentes para nosotros como empresa, desde el sece de actividades por el riesgo sanitario, como también el deseo de las personas de trabajar desde casa y/o en horario flexible, problemas laborales por el distanciamiento obligatorio entre trabajadores y, especialmente, la paralización logística por restricciones de movilidad de contenedores, fueron situaciones externas que no pensábamos que podrían ocurrir; como expresó el economista británico Tim Hartford en el 2022 “A nadie le importaba, hasta que las cosas empezaron a ir mal”. A pesar de todo eso, siempre continuamos y mantenemos nuestra filosofía de adaptarnos constantemente para mejorar nuestros servicios, con el fin de mantener altos estándares de calidad.

Dadas a las condiciones del mercado mundial en el sector logístico, todo empezó a cambiar. Entre los años 2020 y 2021 nos vimos en la necesidad de incrementar los tiempos de despacho, cerrar las yardas en Delaware y Florida, todo originado, debido a la escasez de contenedores y el incremento de los precios originados por el aumento en la demanda.

Toda esta problemática hizo que nos diversificáramos, reestructuráramos nuestras oficinas y departamento de servicio al cliente, con el objetivo de incrementar su Business in Action 2023

Port to Port International (PTP) was founded in Delaware in 1998 by Anabel Panayotti. Our origins emerged from the need to transport and deliver used vehicles to customers in Central America.

Through the years, Port to Port International has established itself as one of the major used vehicle exporters in the country.

We are a growing exporter of new and used construction machinery in Central America.

In November 2005, due to the high volume of vehicles transported to Guatemala, Honduras and Costa Rica, PTP started contracting bulk vessels for their transportation to Central America, as well as the shipment of heavy equipment and machinery.

We have achieved our goal of becoming a NonVessel Operating Common Carrier (NVOCC) company, an international f reight forwarder and a terminal operator, having specialized in the maritime import and export of vehicles, trucks, and construction and forestry equipment. At PTP, with the aim of expanding, we started to operate in South America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, Asia and other international 16

markets.

Today, our company has physical offices in the US (New Castle, Delaware, and Davie, Florida) and in four countries in Central America (Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Costa Rica).

The company operates two departure ports for cars to Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua, which are located in Wilmington, Delaware, and Port Everglades, near Davie, Florida.

Wilmington has the main port in the US to import fruits and other products. The fruit is transported in refrigerated containers and the vehicles are transported back in the same containers. The latter generates a significant and beneficial Business in Action 2023

In August 2023, we celebrated 26 years in the market. Although, in the past two years, we have faced several challenges such as the Coronavirus, which, according to pundits, may have originated the worst financial crisis since World War II, affecting our operations and creating policies inexistent until then for our company, such as the ceasing of operations derived f rom health risks, the wish from workers to work at home and / or with flexible schedules, labor problems derived from mandatory distancing among workers, and especially, the logistical stoppage due to the restriction to container mobility. All of these were external situations we never thought could occur.

As the British economist Tim Hartford stated in 2022, “Nobody cared until things started to go wrong.” Despite all that, we continue to maintain our philosophy of constantly adapting in order to improve our services with the aim of maintaining high quality standards.

Given the global market conditions in the logistics sector, everything started to change.

Between 2020 and 2021, we found ourselves in need of extending dispatch times and closing yards in Delaware and Florida, all stemming from the scarcity of containers and the increase in demand. All of this trouble made us diversify and restructure our offices and customer service department, with the aim of increasing their efficiency without lowering the attention standards that have always characterized us.

Stemming from this dynamism, there are occasions when everything goes in an optimal way and businesses yield a profit, but some circumstances may arise that may lead to financial hardship. In other words, commerce implies an inherent risk that merchants must be prepared for.

Through its Insolvency Law (Decree 8-2022 from the Congress of the Republic of Guatemala), mechanisms are created so that insolvent merchants can present a reorganization plan to their creditors that allows them to continue their commercial activities and thus make payment of their debts. The Insolvency Law is the law of second chances as it seeks the continuity of the business and contemplates the liquidation of the assets of the insolvent company as the last option to pay creditors.

Through the reorganization plan, the debtor with financial difficulties can reach an agreement with their creditors in order to pay their obligations, which must contemplate aspects related to operational, financial and / or administrative activities to be undertaken to ensure the continuity of their business and generate income. The Insolvency Law not only benefits the insolvent merchant, but also their creditors, as they can be paid from the insolvent business’ income instead of waiting for the assets to be liquidated and the result from the sale to be distributed. 2. ¿Cómo su metodología es innovadora para los líderes corporativos?

Desde Thinking Heads trabajamos desde tres principios que consideramos fundamentales: lo que eres, lo que haces y lo que dices. La comunicación tradicional trabaja siempre en esto último. Pero el mundo ha cambiado. Lo que hace nuestra metodología es incidir en ‘el ser’ y en ‘el hacer’. Por tanto, el criterio o aspecto clave en el trabajo con datos es ser capaz de extraer estos datos, y dotarlos de palancas de activación que permitan generar planes basados en el análisis. En este sentido, desde Thinking Heads, hemos desarrollado un Modelo propio de Diferenciación Positiva, posicionándose como nuestra principal herramienta de medición, aunque no la única. 4. ¿Cuáles son las tendencias a las cuales los CEO y líderes deben prestar atención para permanecer relevantes ante los públicos de opinión y seguidores?

El rol del CEO se ha ido ampliando desde las tareas propias de gestión hasta ser un activo que genera también valor intangible para la empresa. Esto implica que los stakeholders generan expectativas no sólo hacia la compañía sino también hacia su líder. Es por ello que la figura del CEO se posiciona como relevante a la hora de construir y gestionar la reputación de la compañía, y en ese sentido es necesario tener en cuenta su figura y su rol al planificar la estrategia de reputación.

La idea del ‘CEO activista’ se plantea como una extensión del activismo corporativo, que es un esfuerzo por parte de las compañías de participar, de posicionarse en torno a temas que preocupan a la sociedad, adoptando un rol más amplio que el de su propia actividad. Las empresas deben tener un propósito más amplio más allá de maximizar el beneficio para los inversores, se espera que los directores ejecutivos defiendan además de sus inversores, a los empleados, clientes, socios, la sociedad o el medio ambiente. Y, este esfuerzo, a su vez implica al CEO que surge como ‘activista’.

Esta nueva figura de líder debe crear conciencia, a través de la comunicación y de sus declaraciones. No obstante, merece la pena trabajar desde una perspectiva cautelosa, ya que, a veces el posicionamiento público de líderes respecto a asuntos polémicos, o los posicionamientos socialmente inaceptables, pueden suponer consecuencias negativas para la empresa que lideran.

Por ello es clave una comunicación consistente con el propósito y la estrategia definida de la compañía, tanto en términos de reputación como de ESG. 5. ¿Hacia dónde va Thinking Heads?

How has Thinking Heads evolved in these 20 years? (Explain the beginning and milestones up to now).

The company has undergone a very interesting evolution after leading the conference sector for years as one of the best speaker bureaus at an international level, as we have evolved towards a consultancy model. This new commitment has required rethinking our way of working and challenging ourselves in order to accompany our clients as they face their own future challenges.

Since 2003, when we came into being, we have been working with personalities, at first through their conferences, with ideas, vision, reality interpretation and methods that have helped people, social, business, professional and academic groups to make progress and generate changes and evolutions at all levels of society. Firstly, we helped them organize conferences, then books, then later their digital identity and the dissemination of their ideas through multiple formats. We exclusively represent 85 high-level thinkers, former politicians, CEOs, entrepreneurs, scholars among them…. And we promote more than 5000 global leaders from all areas of knowledge. In our twenty years of history, we have managed more than 10,000 public appearances of relevant personalities in multiple areas of politics, economy, innovation, business, the arts…We operate in 45 countries and have carried out more than 25,000 content proposals and advised and promoted more than 100 literary works from non-fiction authors.

We operate from Madrid, Miami, and Seoul. On the other hand, we have worked on the measurement and management of reputation in different countries, from the political and institutional areas to the business sector, in different areas involving both services and consumer products. Reputation is as important for those trying to gain trust as for those trying to value quality.
