Presentamos, por primera vez en la galería, una exposición personal de Germán Consetti, artista argentino afincado en Barcelona desde el año 2000.

Con esta exposición, la galería quiere dar voz a la obra de un prometedor artista que ha encontrado su expresión más firme en la sencillez de sus materiales: el metal, la madera y el barro.

El catálogo, acompañado de un texto de Bernat Puigdollers, comprende obra reciente del artista (en exposición) junto con trabajos anteriores que a menudo simbolizan la forma y el principio con los que Consetti conduce su búsqueda artística desde «el origen de la materia».

Este proyecto representa un paso más en la misión de la galería de promocionar el trabajo de artistas emergentes y sella nuestro compromiso con el tejido artístico de la ciudad, que, a pesar de los momentos de dificultad e incertidumbre, sigue generando y atrayendo a talentos vitales. Por nuestra parte, queremos seguir contribuyendo al mantenimiento de la cultura como regenerador de tejidos, lo hacemos en un espacio definido tanto físicamente como conceptualmente: el EspaiALTELL, ubicado en la segunda planta de la galería. We present, for the first time at our venue, a solo exhibition by Germán Consetti, an Argentinean artist based in Barcelona since 2000. With this exhibition, the gallery wants to give a voice to the work of this promising artist who has found his strongest expression through the simplicity of the materials he works with: metal, wood and clay.

The catalogue, accompanied by a text by Bernat Puigdollers, includes the artist’s recent works (on display) as well as some of his previous works. These often illustrate the form and fundamentals of Consetti’s artistic research from «the origins of matter».

This project represents a further step for the gallery in its mission to promote the works of emerging artists. It reinforces our commitment to the artistic sector of the city, which, despite the current uncertainties and difficulties, is still attracting and generating vital talent. On our side we want to continue contributing to keeping culture as a regenerator of the artistic fabric of the city. We do this in a well-defined space, both physically and conceptually: the EspaiALTELL, located on the second floor of the gallery. ÀMBIT Galeria d’Art

El origen de una vocación Para quien no conozca a Germán Consetti (Córdoba, Argentina, 1975) ni a su obra, es necesario relatar, nada más empezar, el origen de su vocación artística y el marco vital de su infancia. Si bien los años de formación son claves para comprender la obra de cualquier artista, juegan en este caso un papel algo más importante de lo habitual. Nacido en Argentina, hijo de un planchista de coches, empieza a coquetear de muy niño, medio a escondidas, con la manipulación de los materiales, creando pequeños juguetes en el taller de su padre, mientras éste dormía su siesta diaria ineludible. Durante la adolescencia, aún en Argentina, cayó en sus manos un ejemplar de una revista antigua en la que se publicaba un extenso reportaje dedicado al escultor Julio González. Desde entonces, el escultor catalán se convirtió en uno de sus referentes más apreciados. Se identificó en seguida con su obra, elaborada con plancha de hierro, el mismo material que usaba su padre en el taller. La obra de González le confirmaba lo que poco a poco ya había intuido a lo largo de los años anteriores al hallazgo: quería ser escultor. Era aún un adolescente, tenía solamente 16 años. Empezaba así una vocación artística sólida y una admiración profunda por la obra de González que le llevaría a cruzar el charco e instalarse en Barcelona. De las páginas amarillentas de una revista a un mundo nuevo lleno de posibilidades.

Este hecho puede parecer anecdótico —y seguramente lo es— pero, sin embargo, explica a la perfección sus orígenes artísticos, sus referentes, su interés por los materiales humildes, desgastados, viejos, y su interés por el trabajo manual. La obra de Germán Consetti es algo dura, con tendencia a

la rotundidad pero siempre dejando margen a la ambigüedad, con acabados perfectamente inacabados, texturas sensibles pero duras. Nada de eso sería posible sin sus orígenes humildes, sin el contacto directo con los materiales, sin el sentido del espacio del artesano que trabaja la plancha de hierro, sin la inventiva de un niño feliz que acaba de comprender que no todo en la vida es vida y que tiene que morir.

El mito de Delfos «Conócete a ti mismo». Esta frase —sencilla de pronunciar pero terriblemente difícil de llevar a cabo— se hallaba inscrita en uno de los pórticos del templo de Apolo, en Delfos, Grecia. Consetti la escuchó por primera vez pronunciada por su profesor de literatura clásica. Caló muy hondo. Él era entonces un joven cargado de preguntas y ávido de respuestas. «Conócete a ti mismo». El imperativo le planteaba el deber complejo de llegar al centro de su ser. Y ese es, de hecho, el eje central de su obra: el autoconocimiento, adentrarse en lo más hondo de sí mismo.

Sabe bien que el propósito es inalcanzable. No se trata de un iluso. Pero es consciente de las recompensas que este proceso le reporta. No necesita nada más.

Consetti se dio cuenta en seguida del poder catártico y terapéutico del arte, de la capacidad inexplicable de ordenar su mente y ensanchar horizontes que

le proporcionaba el trabajo artístico. El trabajo de la materia le da estabilidad y una estructura con la que poder canalizar y defenderse de los reveses y circunstancias de la vida, comprenderse a uno mismo y comprender el mundo que le rodea. Entiende que ser artista es una manera de estar en el mundo, una actitud ante la vida. Crea por una necesidad estrictamente espiritual. Este punto es fundamental para conocer el marco conceptual de su obra. Pero no sólo para averiguar el trasfondo de sus creaciones y ahondar en su entendimiento, también para comprender su forma.

De ahí su carácter visceral, en ocasiones casi agresivo, las referencias constantes a la figura humana, el tratamiento de las superficies externas de su obra: también en la superficie está lo profundo.

Consetti tiene el don de la humildad. Sabe que no hallará nunca la respuesta a sus preguntas. Y sabe bien que el arte se mueve precisamente por el terreno de lo inexplicable. Una obra literal, sin lugar para el misterio, resulta poco estimulante. Por ese motivo Consetti, de la misma manera que lo habían hecho sus admirados Giacometti, Rodin o Medardo Rosso, trabaja con el non finito, con la forma intuida, huyendo de la rotundidad, coqueteando con el vacío, procurando evocar lo que no se dice por inexplicable a través de lo poco que se puede decir.

Del rito de la vida al secreto de la alquimia El espectador se percatará en seguida del carácter ritual de la obra de Germán Consetti. Las referencias al arte primitivo, al arte indígena, al arte ritual de todos los tiempos, son evidentes. Es inevitable pensar en las tanagras griegas, los ushebti egipcios, las figuras votivas precolombinas o bien en las figuras chamánicas mejicanas o africanas. La reflexión entorno a los grandes temas de la vida conectan su obra con el Hombre de todos los tiempos. Tras miles de años de existencia, siguen siendo los mismos temas los que mueven el alma humana. Grandes temas inexplicables que han generado multitud de creencias y ritos que permiten racionalizar lo irrazonable mediante la representación concreta de objetos inteligibles por nuestra mente. Y es por eso que nutre su obra de los símbolos universales de la humanidad que a lo largo de los siglos se han mantenido inalterables más allá de cambios superficiales que no alteran en absoluto su esencia.

Este carácter ritual de su obra es fruto de su interés por el conjunto de las religiones, que comparten, en el fondo, una voluntad de dar respuesta a los grandes interrogantes de la existencia y proporcionar herramientas útiles para vivir. De la misma manera, su escultura nace habitualmente de un interrogante o de un pensamiento que, casi de manera obsesiva, va tomando presencia en su día a día hasta dominar su obra. De ahí su carácter autobiográfico. Toda su obra hace referencia a momentos concretos de su existencia. Pero también se dan a menudo otros casos en los que no es la vida la que se ve reflejada en la obra, sino que es la obra la que se refleja e influye en su vida. Transformando la materia, se transforma a sí mismo. En

el fondo, el barro, la madera o el hierro, son para él medios para trabajar el alma. Para él es evidente: «la escultura debe transmitir un contacto visceral y directo que puede ayudar a propiciar un cambio de conciencia. Creo en el poder catártico de la obra. El arte debe abrir puertas, generar conciencia, ayudar a descubrir los rincones más desconocidos de nosotros mismos».

Se inspira en la creencia primitiva que atribuye al objeto poderes que trascienden la comprensión humana. Muñecos y figuras cargados de algo inexplicable. Antes el arte era eso. La vida era eso. Rito. Resumen y expresión de creencias, una manera de comprender la realidad y comunicarse con lo desconocido, con la cara oculta del mundo, con la divinidad, con la vertiente más espiritual del hombre. Consetti busca lo espiritual en lo humano, en lo terrenal, de ahí el carácter visceral de su obra, un tanto agresiva. Así lo atestiguan las huellas de la herramienta en la madera, los dedos marcados en el barro, pero también la rigidez de sus figuras, arraigadas en la tierra como antenas transmisoras de energía: el hombre como conector entre lo terrenal y lo divino.

Su proceso de trabajo quiere ser alquímico, transmisor de vida. Si realmente nos atrae el arte es por su capacidad de transmitir emoción. Una escultura técnicamente perfecta nos puede resultar fría, distante.

Por lo contrario, una escultura deforme, despropor-

cionada y basta, nos puede conmover profundamente. «Aprovechar la forma como contenedor de vida, independientemente de su aspecto». Este es el objetivo de su obra.

De la muerte a la vida: crónica de un viaje inverso En 2012, una exposición celebrada en la Fundació Arranz Bravo de Hospitalet de Llobregat, permitió ver una selección significativa de la obra de Germán Consetti. Resumen perfecto de los temas vertebrales de todo su mundo artístico: el viaje, el hombre y la muerte. Hoy, en esta nueva exposición celebrada en el EspaiALTELL de la galería Àmbit, se le añade, además, la vida.

Hasta hace no mucho tiempo, un sentimiento trágico ha dominado el conjunto de sus creaciones. No en vano sus personajes hieráticos eran también personajes solitarios, estáticos, situados en un extremo de la barca, viajando por los mares de la vida sin nada ni nadie más que ellos mismos. El cráneo se convirtió entonces en pretexto de su arte. Todo era una reflexión en torno a la muerte y, por lo tanto, implícitamente, también en torno a la vida.

La muerte, para bien o para mal, nos condiciona la vida, un estado fugaz y volátil. El escultor ha visto la muerte de cerca: «Algo se fue de ese cuerpo.

No sé qué. Pero la vida era eso». La misma vida que procura que permanezca en sus obras, fuga de nuestros cuerpos. En un instante, todo se desvanece.

Pero Consetti no entendía el cráneo únicamente como metáfora, ni tan solo como vanitas, sino también como vasija, como contenedor del infinito. Todo el universo cabe en el vacío hermético de una calavera. Nos viene en seguida a la

mente un magnífico y célebre cuadro de Antonio de Pereda. Una vanitas pintada en torno a 1660 en la que se ven representados tres cráneos, dispuestos sobre una mesa. El que está situado en primer término, volteado, muestra un orificio oscuro y profundo, misterioso y ancho. Todo, absolutamente todo, cabe en él.

Pero un acontecimiento ha cambiado por completo las reglas del juego, el marco vital del escultor: recientemente ha nacido su primer hijo. Las figuras solitarias, erguidas como tótems, comparten espacio con otras figuras. La feminidad ha encontrado también su lugar entre las figuras representadas, con el vientre preñado, portador de vida. El infinito contenido en la vasija de un cráneo, se relaciona ahora con el infinito de un vientre, igualmente esférico, igualmente misterioso. Ahora la muerte es un canto a la vida, la finitud se disipa en un vientre que perpetúa la existencia. La obra muda de piel junto con su creador: «nada ha vuelto a ser igual. Mi Yo de antes ha muerto. Ahora solamente trato de reinventarme». Una muerte más que se une a las pequeñas muertes de cada día. Una muerte continuada de un renacimiento, de un nuevo carácter: «ahora es un momento importante para mí y para mi obra. Estoy tratando de pulir mi lenguaje. Me siento en una etapa de renacimiento, cargado de experiencia, pero hecho un hombre nuevo». Consetti se acerca una vez más a la otra orilla, como el barquero Caronte, y nos trae nuevas del otro lado. Se acerca al borde del abismo. Lo hace sin miedo, convencido, renovado. No les extrañe. En el abismo se encuentra un mundo infinito de posibilidades. Como dijo Walter Benjamin, «quien se aproxima al abismo no debe sorprenderse de saber volar».

English translation

The origins of a vocation For those who may not know Germán Consetti (Córdoba, Argentina, 1975) or his work, there is a need to explain, from the very beginning, the origins of his artistic vocation as well as his childhood and the framework of his life’s path. Although the education and training years are key to fully understanding the works of any artist, in this case they play a slightly more important role than they usually do. Born in Argentina, son of a car body shop worker, he started flirting with the crafts and tools in his father’s workshop as a child, manipulating the materials, creating small toys, half-hidden while his father took his unavoidable daily nap. During his adolescence, still in Argentina, he discovered an old magazine containing an extensive report dedicated to the sculptor Julio González. From that point on, the Catalan sculptor became one of Germán’s most appreciated references. Germán identified with the sculptor’s work, which he created with the same iron plates that his father used in his workshop. The works of González confirmed what he had already suspected for years: He understood that he wanted to be a sculptor.

By then, he was still a teenager, just 16 years old. Thus, a strong artistic vocation was born, as well as a deep admiration for the works of González, which would eventually lead him to cross the ocean and settle in Barcelona. From that old magazine and its yellowed pages to a new world full of possibilities.

This fact may seem just an anecdote —and it may well be— but nevertheless, it perfectly explains Germán’s artistic origins, his roots, as well as his curiosity towards those humble, worn, old materials, and his interest in craftworks.

Germán Consetti’s work is somewhat harsh, with a tendency towards the

absolutes —but it always leaves room for ambiguity, with perfectly unfinished ends, with somewhat sensitive yet harsh textures. None of this could be possible without his humble origins. Without the direct contact with the materials. Without the sense of space that only that artisan who works with the iron sheets has. Without the inventiveness of a happy child who has just understood that not everything in life is life; and that everything, eventually, must die.

Delphi’s Myth «Know yourself». This statement —simple to say, yet terribly difficult to carry out— was inscribed on one of the porticoes of Apollo’s temple, in Delphi, Greece.

Consetti heard it for the first time when it was uttered by his classical literature teacher. It sank deep.

He was, back then, a young man full of questions and eager for answers. «Know yourself». That imperative posed the complex duty of reaching for the center of his own being. And that is, in fact, the central axis of his work: self-knowledge. To dive into the depths of oneself. He knows well that this is an unattainable aim. He’s not a fool. Instead, he is aware of the rewards that such a process brings him. And having that, he doesn’t require anything else.

Consetti soon became aware of the cathartic and therapeutic power of art. Of the inexplicable ability to order his mind, and widen hishorizons, through working on his art. Working with matter gives him stability, as well as a structure with which he can channel and defend himself from life’s setbacks and circumstances. Ultimately, it gives him a way to understand himself and to understand the world around him.

He understands that being an artist is a way of being in the world, an attitude towards life. It generates a strictly spiritual need. And this is a fundamental point in order to comprehend the conceptual framework of Consetti’s work. Not only to acknowledge the background that underlies his creations and thus, to deepen its understanding, but also to understand his creations’ forms. Hence their visceral, sometimes almost aggressive tone, the constant references to the human figure, the treatment of the external surfaces of his work: what is deep can also be found right on the surface of things.

Consetti possesses the gift of humility. He knows that he will never find the answers to his questions.

And he knows well that art moves, in fact, through the terrain of the inexplicable. Works that are literal, that don’t give space to mystery, are minimally stimulating. For this reason Consetti —in the same way

that his admired Giacometti, Rodin or Medardo Rosso did— works with the non-finite, with the intuited form, fleeing from the rotundity, flirting with the void, trying to evoke what is not said, that may be inexplicable, through the little bits which can be expressed.

From the rite of life to the secret of alchemy The spectator will soon acknowledge the ritual nature of Germán Consetti’s works. The references to primitive art, to indigenous art, to ritual art of all times, are evident. Facing his work, connections to the Greek tanagras, the Egyptian ushabti, the pre-Columbian votive figures or the Mexican or African shamanic figures are inevitable. The reflections around the great themes of life connect his work with the Man of all times. After thousands of years of existence, those same themes still move the human soul. Great, inexplicable themes that have generated a multitude of beliefs and rites, which in turn, allow us to rationalize the inexplicable through the concrete representation of objects which are intelligible for our mind. And that is why he nourishes his works with the universal symbols of humanity which, throughout the centuries, have retained their essence.

The ritual dimension of his work is the result of Consetti’s interest in all religions, which share, at heart, the common goal of answering the great questions of this existence, as well as providing useful tools with which to live. In the same way, his sculpture is usually born from a question or a thought that, almost obsessively, takes a presence in his day-to-day to the point of dominating his work. Hence, its autobiographical dimension. All his works are re-

ferential to specific moments of his existence. But, in other cases, it often isn’t life that is being reflected in his work but rather his work that reflects on and influences life. By transforming matter, he transforms himself. In fact, clay, wood, or iron are for him means for working on the soul. For him it is evident. «Sculpture must transmit a visceral and direct contact that helps, and can lead, to a change of consciousness. I believe in the cathartic power of the work. Art must open doors, generate awareness, help discover the most unknown corners of ourselves.» He is inspired by the primitive belief of attributing the object with powers that transcend human understanding. Dolls and figures loaded with something inexplicable. Before, that was art. That was life. Rite. A summary and an expression of beliefs, a way of understanding reality and of communicating with the unknown, with the hidden face of the world, with divinity, with man’s most spiritual side. What is spiritual within the human, within the earthly, is what Consetti seeks hence the visceral and somewhat aggressive nature of his work. It is evidenced by the tool’s traces on the wood, the finger’s marks on the clay, but also by the rigidity of his figures, deeply rooted in the earth as antennae transmitting energy. The man as a connector between the earthly and the divine.

His work process wants to be alchemical, a transmitter of life. If art really attracts us, it is because of its ability to carry emotion. A technically perfect sculpture can be cold, distant. On the other hand, a deformed, disproportionate and suffocating sculpture can deeply move us. Consetti seeks to «take advantage of shape as a life container, regardless of its appearance». This is the aim of his works.

From death to life: a chronicle of an inverse journey In 2012, an exhibition held at the Fundació Arranz Bravo, at Hospitalet de Llobregat, showcased a significant selection of Germán Consetti’s work. A perfect summary of the core themes of his entire artistic world: journey, man, and death.

Today, in this new exhibition held at the EspaiALTELL of ÀMBIT Galeria d'Art. Until not long ago, a tragic feeling has dominated the whole of his creations. Not in vain were his hieratic characters also solitary, static characters, placed at one end of the boat, traveling through the seas of life with nothing or nobody but themselves. The skull then became his art’s pretext. Everything was a reflection on death and, therefore, implicitly, it was also about life. Death, for good or ill, determines our lives, a fleeting and volatile state. The sculptor has seen death closely: «Something left that body. I don’t know what. But that was life.» That is the same life that he seeks for his works to retain, that same life that keeps fleeing our bodies. In an instant, everything vanishes.

But Consetti did not understand the skull only as a metaphor, not even as vanitas, but also as a vessel, as a container of infinity. The whole universe fits within the sealed emptiness of a skull. A magnificent and celebrated picture

of Antonio de Pereda comes to mind immediately. A vanitas painted around 1660, in which three skulls are represented, arranged on a table. The one closest to the viewer, turned over, shows a dark and deep hole, mysterious and wide. Everything, absolutely everything, fits into it.

But a recent event has completely changed the rules of the game and the sculptor’s mindset: his first child was born. The solitary figures, erected like totems, share space with other figures. Femininity has also found its place among the represented figures, with a pregnant womb, bearer of life. The infinite that is contained in the skull is now related to the infinity within that womb, equally spherical, equally mysterious. Now death is a tribute to life, finitude dissipates in a womb that perpetuates existence. Work changes its skin along with its creator: «Nothing has ever been the same. My old Self is dead. Now I’m only trying to reinvent myself». Another death that joins everyday’s small deaths.

A death that is followed by a rebirth, a new character. «Now is an important moment for me and for my work. I’m trying to polish my language. I feel at a stage of rebirth, but also full of experience, made a new man.» Consetti is once again approaching the other side of the shore, like Caronte the ferryman, and he brings us news from the opposite bank. He approaches the edge of the abyss. He does it fearless, convinced, renewed. Don’t be startled. In the abyss there is an infinite world of possibilities. As Walter Benjamin put it, «Those who approach the abyss should not be surprised if they know how to fly.»

Ha estudiado Literatura en la Universidad UNRC y dibujo con el autor de cómics Yabar. Desde el año 2000 vive y trabaja en Barcelona. Su trabajo se ha presentado en varias exposiciones individuales: «El viaje circular» Galería Tekhnart (Barcelona, 2013); «Entre el Cielo y el Infierno» Fundación Bertelsmann (Barcelona, 2013); «La memoria de la escultura» Fundación Arranz-Bravo (Barcelona, 2012) y colectivas: «Escultura és cultura» Àmbit Galeria d’Art (Barcelona, 2016); «Una plataforma d’art contemporani a l’Hospitalet» Fundació Arranz-Bravo (Barcelona, 2016); Centre d’Art Contemporani Can Sisteré (Santa Coloma de Gramanet, 2016); «Fundación Arranz-Bravo 5 anys» (L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, 2014) entre otras.

Germán Consetti was born in Cordoba, Argentina, in 1975.

He studied Literature at the UNRC University, and drawing with cartoonist Yabar.

Since 2000, he has been living and working in Barcelona. He exhibited his works in both solo shows such as «El viaje circular» Galería Tekhnart (Barcelona, 2013); «Entre el Cielo y el Infierno» Fundación Bertelsmann (Barcelona, 2013); «La memoria de la escultura» Fundación Arranz-Bravo (Barcelona, 2012) and collective shows: «Escultura és cultura» Àmbit Galeria d’Art (Barcelona, 2016); «Una plataforma d’art contemporani a l’Hospitalet» Fundació Arranz-Bravo (Barcelona, 2016); Centre d’Art Contemporani Can Sisteré (Santa Coloma de Gramanet, 2016); «Fundación Arranz-Bravo 5 anys» (L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, 2014) among others.
