A MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP Why “We Build Trust”?

In today’s environment, America has a trust issue especially in the political arena. If you read some of the headlines dealing with the issue, you see headlines such as “America’s Declining Trust in Government”, “Distrust in America Viewed as a Problem”, “Trust is Collapsing in America”, and it goes on and on. In business, it can take a long time to establish a trusting relationship, but only a short period of time to erode into a distrusting one. Here at Omega Construction, our motto is “We Build Trust”. As employees, clients and friends of Omega, we all have seen and are familiar with Omega’s motto, but what is the history behind it and how did it come into existence?

Let’s look at some history. Paul Covington founded Omega in 1975, at the young age of 27 years old, where initially there was no motto for the Company. In 1985, when the Company was 10 years old, Paul was awarded a relatively large project with a new client he had been calling on for some time. As Paul negotiated the project and began thinking about his client and their relationship, he realized that his ability to develop the client relationship and negotiate the project was dependent upon the trust he was able to establish with his new customer. The more Paul thought about the role trust played in business, the more he understood the importance of having dedicated employees who build lasting, long-term relationships with their customers. Paul’s vision of success for Omega

was dependent upon building trusting relationships with customers, subcontractors and employees in every aspect of the business. Thus “We Build Trust” was born.

Paul had a belief about relationships: treat your customers and employees as friends with a trusting, caring relationship and you will be rewarded both personally and as a company. I personally have never seen anyone who has such deep and caring feelings for their business and personal relationships as Paul. He knew that to develop trust, one would require buy-in from everyone in the company - to be open with their customers, deliver the bad news with the good and always do what you say you are going to do, no matter what the cost. I have heard Paul say many times, as I am sure many of you have also, “You should begin each construction project with a customer, but you should end the project with a friend”.

And now, for the rest of the Story …. The customer Paul built the project for in 1985, developed into a lifelong friendship with Paul and they continue to stay in touch to this day. For your next project, remember to Build Trust and develop friendships that will last a lifetime.

This Independence Day, take a step back and cherish your life and the country we live in while appreciating the sacrifices people made to give us the freedom and independence we enjoy today. I hope you all have an enjoyable and safe Fourth of July holiday.

BERRIEN HOUSE WINS COVETED GEORGIA TRUST PRESERVATION AWARD Omega Construction is proud to announce one of its recent projects, the interior restoration of Berrien House in downtown Savannah, has won a 2020 Excellence in Rehabilitation award from the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation.

Previously the oldest unrestored historic home in Georgia, Berrien House was built in 1791 for Major John Berrien, a Revolutionary War hero. The notable Savannah home is now owned and preserved by his descendant, Andrew Jones. The interior restoration and preservation of Berrien House is well known for uncovering one of the best collections of historic wallpapers in the country.

Omega’s interior restoration included both preservation and custom fabrication of numerous elements of the home’s interior with historic profiles, moldings, mantels, doors and flooring all meticulously documented and catalogued for accuracy in the re-creation process. The home’s interior now includes private residential space for the owner, entertaining space for guests and Queensborough Bank & Trust’s downtown location on its ground floor.

“I am so proud of the entire team’s effort on this incredible project” said Todd Mayo, Omega Construction’s Georgia Division Manager. “It is not only one of the most iconic homes on Broughton Street and in Savannah, but in the entire state of Georgia.”

Since 2016, Triad Business Journal has celebrated the Triad’s CEOs and chief financial officers. Omega Construction’s CFO, Greg Marshall, is selected as one of the 20 CEOs and CFOs in the Triad who is considered to have made impressive contributions to his organization and region. Honorees were selected from a competitive group of nominees, and span industries such as education, health care, banking and manufacturing.

HUMAN RESOURCES EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT At Omega we appreciate all of our employee’s contributions to Omega. In this section of the Omega Report, we want to take a moment and spotlight a few employees who have gone above and beyond.

Anjie Hodges and Lisa Singleton worked diligently to keep our accounting functions running smoothly during Covid-19 lock down measures. “While they made it look easy, it took a tremendous amount of work and dedication to their parts. Omega is very lucky to have them. It’s a testament to their hard work and dedication that most companies our size have a much larger accounting team.”, says Greg Marshall, Omega CFO. Lisa is an integral part of the Omega team, handling two of our most important functions -- payroll and accounts receivable. Over the years she has always shown tremendous dedication to Omega, but stepped up and took that to an even higher level during the lock down. Many companies struggled to process payroll on a monthly or bi-weekly basis, but Lisa worked hard to ensure payroll needs were always met on a weekly basis.

One of the main functions of the Accounting Department is to support the rest of the company’s employees and make their jobs easier. Greg Marshall says, “no one exemplifies that more than Anjie.

She’s excellent at all the things she is responsible for including accounts payable, credit card bills, processing subcontracts, subcontractor payment applications and lien notices just to name a few.

What really stands out about Anjie is how she is always focused on helping other Omega employees even if it’s not part of her normal job duties, and her always positive attitude.”

omega TRUST academy The TRUST Academy, our in-house training program, aims to mold our younger employees into future leaders and to acclimate new employees to Omega’s processes and expectations. The program is designed to accommodate all learning styles and includes classroom training, interactive methods, hands-on training, computer-based training, video training, and coaching/mentoring. Module topics so far have ranged from effective communication to resource management to managing conflict. All employees have access to all module recordings and materials which are uploaded to our intranet/employee portal. Stay tuned, exciting things to come!

ALWAYS PUTTING SAFETY FIRST

Struck-by objects is another leading cause of construction-related deaths. Approximately 75% of struck-by fatalities involve heavy equipment such as trucks or cranes. The following related hazards cause the most struck-by injuries: vehicles, falling/flying objects, constructing masonry walls.

VEHICLES: HOW DO I AVOID HAZARDS? Wear seat belts that meet OSHA standards, except on equipment that is designed only for stand-up operation, or that has no rollover protective structure.

Check vehicles before each shift to assure that all parts are in safe operating condition.

Do not drive a vehicle in reverse gear with an obstructed rear view, unless it has an audible reverse alarm, or another worker signals that it is safe.

Drive vehicles or equipment only on roadways or grades that are safely constructed and maintained.

Make sure that you and all other personnel are in the clear before using dumping or lifting devices.

Lower or block bulldozer and scraper blades, end-loader buckets, dump bodies, etc., when not in use, and leave all controls in neutral position.

Set parking brakes when vehicles and equipment are parked and chock the wheels if they are on an incline.

All vehicles must have adequate braking systems and other safety devices.

Haulage vehicles that are loaded by cranes, power shovels, loaders etc., must have a cab shield or canopy that protects the driver from falling materials.

Do not exceed a vehicle’s rated load or lift capacity.

Do not carry personnel unless there is a safe place to ride.

Use traffic signs, barricades or flaggers when construction takes place near public roadways.

Workers must be highly visible in all levels of light. Warning clothing, such as red or orange vests, are required; and if worn for night work, must be of reflective material.

FALLING AND FLYING OBJECTS: HOW DO I AVOID HAZARDS? Wear hardhats. Stack materials to prevent sliding, falling or collapse. Use protective measures such as toe boards and debris nets.

Power Tools and Machines Use safety glasses and other face protection.

Inspect tools, such as saws and lathes, to ensure that protective guards are in good condition. Familiarize yourself with the proper operation of tools.

Cranes and Hoists Avoid working underneath loads being moved and barricade hazard areas with warning signs.

Inspect cranes and hoists to see that all components, such as wire rope, lifting hooks, chains, etc. are in good condition. Do not exceed the lifting capacity.

Overhead Work Avoid working underneath loads being moved and barricade hazard areas with warning signs.

Use toe boards, screens or guardrails on scaffolds to prevent falling objects or use debris nets, catch platforms or canopies to deflect falling objects.

Compressed Air Reduce compressed air used for cleaning to 30 psi and only use with appropriate protective equipment. Never clean clothing with compressed air.

CONSTRUCTING MASONRY WALLS: HOW DO I AVOID HAZARDS? Per OSHA, all masonry walls over 8’ in height should be adequately braced until the permanent supporting structure is erected. Omega’s Masonry Bracing Guideline will allow for taller heights of unbraced walls but must be addressed on an individual per job basis.

A Controlled Access Zone (CAZ) should be established when laying masonry walls that is 4’ taller than the wall and runs the entire length of the wall. The CAZ should be flagged off to prevent entry and no one is allowed to enter the CAZ except masons who are actively working on the wall.

When bracing masonry walls, a minimum of 2 braces are required for each masonry wall panel between control joints.

Wall braces should be anchored to concrete deadmen or augers. Wood or metal stakes driven into the ground are NOT acceptable means of support for wall braces.

Einstein” - Wright Smith, Superintendent Take photos and put them in your daily report. Old saying about a picture is worth a thousand words is truer than ever. Prior planning prevents poor performances!

Make all trades a part of your planning so no one can say, “I didn’t know!”. A short pencil lead beats a short memory every time! Keep notes even if you don’t share them with anyone. I keep a written spiral notebook as a job journal.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

PUBLIX #1703 OAK ISLAND, NC

Publix store #1703 at Oak Island Marketplace anchors the 35,800 square foot development on Oak Island Drive.

Publix at Oak Island Market Place has officially been opened to the public, bringing 28,800 square feet of supermarket and 7,000 square feet of shopping space to the local community. Featuring packaged food, deli department, coffee shop and hot bar with indoor and outdoor seating, this completed project is the tenth Publix project for the Omega retail team. Design features for this project include load bearing masonry structure clad with cement board siding, EIFS and brick veneer.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

AAA FINS CAR WASH #103 OGDEN, NC

AAA Fins Car Wash located just outside of Wilmington is one of seven car washes in Omega’s portfolio.

AAA Fins (106 Oak Ridge Lane, Wilmington, North Carolina) is the first of at least four AAA branded car washes that Omega has or will complete.

This 3,500 square foot project is a completely automated, belt-driven car wash with exterior vacuum and mat cleaning stations. The building is designed with a mix of load bearing masonry, architecturally exposed structural steel, wood trusses, rolled steel beams, metal decking, wood sheathing, wood and metal framing.

William Marshall

Son of Greg and Lori Marshall, William graduated from Mount Airy High School and will be attending Virginia Tech. William is a member of the National Honor Society and earned his Eagle Scout rank the first semester of his senior year. At Virginia Tech, William will be a member of the VT Honors College program and intends on majoring in English, minoring in Political Science, with plans to go to law school after completing his undergraduate degree.

Alyscia Leonard

Daughter of Chris and Velvet Leonard, Aly Leonard graduated from Carroll County High School with an Advanced Diploma. She lettered in both swimming and soccer during her high school career. In the fall, Aly will attend Surry Community College with aspirations to go into medical imaging.

Cara Marshall

Daughter of Eric and Julie Marshall, Cara graduated from Mt. Airy High School. During her high school career, Cara was a member of Tri-M Music Honor Society. In the Fall, Cara will begin classes at Surry Community College.

R. Parkley Hennings

Daughter of Barry & Penny Hennings. Parkley graduated magna cum laude from Forbush High School. During high school, she was a member of the Beta Club, the HOSA club and played basketball and volleyball earning Conference Player of the Year in both sports. Parkley plans to attend Lenoir Rhyne University in the fall and major in Exercise Science with plans to go on to graduate school to become a Physicians Assistant. Parkley will continue her volleyball career while attending LR.

Sophie Hennings

Daughter of Kevin and Rynn Hennings, Sophie graduated from Rice University with a Bachelor of Arts in Cognitive Science and Political Science. During her time at Rice, she was a member of the Mock Trial team starting in its inaugural year and competed in several tournaments throughout the country. As an Academic Mentor, she participated in annual One-Act plays and served as College Representative. Sophie plans on taking a gap year before returning to school to receive her graduate degree.

Ryan Singleton

Son of Lisa Singleton, Ryan graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in December of 2019. Ryan gained his Bachelor of Music in Music Education with a concentration in Organ. After graduation, Ryan has become the Resident Musician at Davidson United Methodist Church in Davidson, North Carolina.

Elizabeth and Mac Marshall

They’re well on their way! Elizabeth and Mac Marshall, children of Jim and Kate Marshall, celebrated their kindergarten and preschool graduations. Elizabeth (6), graduated from kindergarten at Hancock Day School and will be attending 1st grade at Hancock in the Fall.

Mac (4 1/2), will be attending Pre-K at Hancock next year.
