The proposal for Te Papa Tongarewa seeks to explore the story of Onepū. This story, like many, has been suppressed through colonialism. The word Onepū reflects the sand bank Pikopiko-i-whiti that encircles the world and where six atua wāhine stand in the different directions of the wind, holding big fans (tāwhiriwhiri), which are used to fan the winds over the earth. It is a Māori story of 6 female dieties who, according to Ngai Tahu tradition, control the 6 winds of the world, sharing tales of love, miscarriage and legend, and expressing mana wāhine; the intrinsic spiritual power of women. It is the story of the origin of the world

Architectural repsonses to extreme weather events are coming more necessary as the effect of climate change sinks in. Sited on the Mirimar Peninsula, this proposal seeks to explore computational responses to cyclones. In return, a self sufficient form is developed.

Part of the design process for the Te Papa Tongawera project was iterative modelling. Using cardstock, curvilinear forms were explored in order to gain a richer understanding of real life limitations.
Trimester One, 2020
The combination of rectilinear and curvilinear forms through physical modelling allows for a deeper understanding how parasitic architecture can be carried out.
