by Seth Halpern Editor (Editor’s Note: The following is a capsulized summary of the Bible story. It is NOT a complete historical or theological treatment of The Bible but rather a quick “fly-over” to give the reader the context and theme of God’s Word as this editor (and Jesus-follower) understands it.) In the beginning of time, God created the world and everything in it. He created humans last and made Adam first, then Eve. He gave them everything including the free will to do as they please but He wanted for them to choose to do what He asked. The Devil, the first Angel that

rebelled against God, tempted Adam and Eve to go against God. That is called Sin. Sin brought terrible trouble into the world and broke the relationship between God and humans. Since God is Holy and Perfect, He cannot associate with anything tainted with Sin. Later, God destroyed everyone with a great flood, except for Noah and his family. He told them to start the human race over. Most people continued to rebel against God, but centuries later, a man named Abraham (Abram) had strong faith in God. God called him righteous because of His faith and made a promise to Abraham that he would be the head of a great family. (He was old and had no children at that time). His son, Isaac and grandson,

Jacob, kept Abraham’s faith (although though didn’t obey God completely) and God chose to bless the children of Jacob, known as Israel. The people grew into a great nation, but they had been enslaved by the ruthless ruler of Egypt. God chose a man named Moses to lead them out in a miraculous way. After leading them out of Egypt, God talked to Moses and gave him rules or laws for the people so that they would be separate from the godless cultures around them. The laws seemed restricting but were for their own good. There were laws about food, cleanliness, worship, and dealing with one another. Some of the laws of worship included animal sacrifices that would temporarily cleanse their sin and allow them to

worship God. After that, God led Joshua, Moses disciple, to victories in battle over a godless people and they took over the land of Canaan. That became the nation of Israel. Israel had many leaders that God raised up until their greatest leader, David who became king of Israel. Israel thrived under the leadership of David and his son Solomon, but after Solomon, the people were divided and they had mostly bad and sinful leadership. Throughout that time, God raised up people, called prophets, to warn the people that they were going to pay the price of hardship if they didn’t repent (turn back) to God from their sinful

Bible Trivia

••• Spiritual Fitbit ••• by April James I see people get so excited about their Fitbit or other activity tracker, proudly showing off all it will do and how it encourages them to be physically active. A Fitbit can notify us each hour to take a stroll if we haven’t taken 250 steps in that hour; it can track physical activity, the calories from food we ate, how many calories w e ’ v e burned, and how we slept. Now, b e f o r e anyone thinks this is an endorsement for Fitbit – it is not; I have a mixed relationship with electronic gadgets; I think I’ll leave it at that and get back to the subject. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a Spiritual Fitbit? One that notifies us hourly if we have not yet offered up 250 words of prayer, praise, thanksgiving, and adoration; or tracks our spiritual life so we know when we are right on track or starting to drift so we can correct course before we stray far. What about tracking our daily intake of the Bread of Life and Living Water to see if we’ve had sufficient

quantity to avoid becoming spiritually anemic? A Fitbit will also notify us of an incoming call and can even display a text message. How nice that would be, so we don’t miss the Lord wanting to speak to us. And, then there is the alarm, no more missing church because we overslept

or sleeping through the sermon when it vibrates to say we haven’t moved in the last hour. With knowing our physical activity, the Fitbit can track our progress and send us cheers for milestones along the way. What if our spiritual tracker told us how many we have witnessed to in the day or the week; would we be motivated to talk more about the Lord, and be about His business, if we were to see our progress in black and white throughout the day on a monitor? Then there is the heart rate monitor.

What if our monitor displayed our temperament status, how our spiritual fruit is doing; would that be a good thing? I’m fairly confident technology will not develop a Spiritual Fitbit, but actually we don’t need it, we have something far better - He’s called Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit knows more about us than a tracker ever could and we don’t have to program Him or charge His batteries. We do need to understand how He operates, how to hear his voice, and to recognize His promptings. Thankfully we have been given a Manual, the Bible, and a private line to the Author to talk to Him free of charge. We should be aware of all the advantages there is to having Holy Spirit in our life; He will be our guide, teacher, comforter, encourager, counselor and more. Want to know how fit you are spiritually, talk to Him. Want reminders to pray, promptings and boldness to share Jesus, just ask Him for it. Let’s all be spiritually fit! www.BeyondTheSilverCoin.org

Helped or Helper by Paula McBride Do you remember when you first learned to swim? Who was it that gently supported with flat open hands your trembling tummy? Who patiently waited for you to relax till that amazing moment you floated on your own? Who encouraged you to continue swimming instruction till you could fully enjoy all the recreation afforded by water sports. For me, it was my dad. Those times in the pool were precious because I had my dad all to myself and all his focus was on me. Later, as I became more confident in the water, I knew his eyes were always on me, making sure I was safe, and being available to support once again if I became fearful. Such is the tender care our Heavenly Father lavishes on us as His children. The author of Hebrews wrote that we can approach God’s throne of grace with confidence and receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need (Hebrews 4:16). The Greek word used in this verse for “help” has the shade of meaning that encompasses support or undergirding. Just as my dad supported me from underneath till I could float,

Father God is present with us in times we falter or fail. The apostle Paul found himself flailing in shipwreck as recorded in Acts 27. Paul states that, in an effort to save the ship, sailors used cables to undergird the vessel. That is the exact word picture that reflects the help God gives us in our time of need, whether a massive storm or a crystal-clear pool. Each of us could tell a story of when we were helped or undergirded in times of trouble. In gratefulness to God, should we not then pay it forward? Help others who are in need? Hebrew 6 answers that question for us. Verse 10 reminds us that “God…will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.” Does this mean the undergirding is up to us? No! That continues to be God’s work, for He alone is omnipotent. The word “help” used in Hebrews 6:10 is shaded in Greek with the meaning of service or ministering. As God undergirds our loved one in their trial, we become the hands, feet, or mouthpiece He uses for comfort and provision. Often, we find

INSPIRATION I Got This by Christy Boals www.gracefilledpurpose.com So, having successfully dropped all my older children off at Vacation Bible School for the morning, I thought it would be a great opportunity to take my two year old to the lake. We made it to the water’s edge when suddenly she realized we had left her all-important “ga-ga,” (sippy cup) in the van. I assured her I could go get it. She was very sure she could go get it. I told her it was too hard for her and of course I got the two year old, “Why?” I reminded her she couldn’t open the big door. I told her all she needed to do was wait for me, hold still, I would go open the door and get what she needed. By this point I was laughing at myself. How many countless times had I had this same conversation with God? “God, I need something.” I’ll take care of it, you just wait on Me and be still. “I can do it myself, if I could just pry this door open!”

As I went back to the van, I could see her start to follow me, still sure that I needed supervising or reminding. The path was too rough for her little feet, so she was soon just standing there stuck halfway between the lake and the van. This too was familiar to me. Instead of relaxing at the lake or wherever God has asked me to wait, I supervise Him in my prayers or try to get where I want to go on my own. The result is I end up stuck on the path. After I retrieved the sippy cup and scooped my girl up in my arms, I thought about how much nicer sitting by the lake waiting for God would be, instead of continuing to try to find my way on my own. Maybe someday I’ll get there, but I am so glad God continues to scoop me up and carry me on the path I should go. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6

INSPIRATION CBA MARKETPLACE MONTHLY Used by (for) God! Before I connect my article to the above headline, let me share this. I have used many devotional supplements to my regular Bible reading over the years but none (in my humble opinion) have been more impactful to my life than “My Utmost for His Highest” by Oswald Chambers. You’ll find his writings very practical yet extremely challenging. You won’t be disappointed. If you have served God for any length of time, I’m sure you have often struggled with, prayed about and sought counsel on how to determine God’s will for your life. I am not simply referring to your ultimate calling but also your desire to be used by God on a daily (or regular) basis. Well, I was really encouraged by something Oswald wrote in his May 18th devotion. Here it is:

“If you want to be of use to God, get rightly related to Jesus Christ and He will make you of use unconsciously every minute your life.” I love that! A verse that I believe compliments that quote is from Isaiah 26:3 (NLT2) You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! In summary, the more we focus our attention on Jesus Christ, His Word, His ways, His character combined with a desire to please Him, He will direct our paths and we can rest in the fact that we are being used by Him. I like to say it this way; Mary before Martha. Mary spent time with Jesus while Martha was concerned about the work that needed to be done. The work can’t be ignored (our use for God) but the relationship MUST come first.

Ask Me If I Care!

by John Imler We have all heard it said in a rather joking manner or seen it on T-shirts but have we ever stopped to consider the message it conveys? Where did this attitude come from? Perhaps it is that we live in what has been called the “me” generation. We allow ourselves to be caught up in our own world, our own jobs, our own families, and our own lives to the point that there is no time to care about others or about their trials and tribulations. Yet this is not the attitude that our Creator wants us as believers to portray. Galatians 6:2 says “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Our world is full of those who carry heavy burdens. No matter where we look we see sickness, loss of friends and loved ones, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, erupting volcanoes, starvation, homelessness, and loneliness. Each of these would cry out to us “Do You Care?” It is obvious that as individuals we

cannot carry the burdens of the entire world. Just what is our Creator-given responsibility to each voice that cries out to us? In Galatians, Paul is speaking to the believers and calls us to share the burden of our fellow believers. In Romans 12:13, he says “Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.” But what is our responsibility to those who are not believers? Christ answers in Luke 6:27-31. He sums it up by saying, “Do to others as you would have them do to you” (v. 31). In Matthew 5:16 Christ further admonishes: “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Peter restates this with the words, “Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us” (I Peter 2:12). We cannot represent a God of love to the unbelievers around us if we have an “ask me if I care” attitude.

Continued from Page 1: “The Bible Story...” and rebellious ways. Unfortunately, they didn’t repent and the nation was split into two, a northern Kingdom called Israel and a southern Kingdom called Judah, each was ultimately taken over by a foreign power. Israel never recovered, but Judah (the more faithful of the two kingdoms) was allowed to return to their home by a benevolent foreign captor. They returned, built a wall to protect the city and a new temple to worship God. Things were quiet for several hundred years until God told a young virgin that she would give birth to a baby to be named Jesus (Y’shua in Hebrew) and since He would be born to a woman and from God with no human father, the baby would be both man and God. He would be the Son of God, the only one to be born without sin and lived a sin-free life. He would grow up to teach as no teacher before him and back up his teaching with miracles. Yet, his ultimate purpose was not to teach or perform miracles but instead to die a horrible death. His death would come at the hands of the Romans and at the request of the Jewish leaders who were threatened by his popularity. However, God himself put Jesus to death as a sacrifice to pay for the sins of each person in the world, past, present and future. Because God is Holy, He cannot look upon sin, nor can He have a relationship with anyone who has sinned.

This is one reason why the Law was given through Moses, so that an animal sacrifice would pay the debt of the person’s sin. The Law was also given to show people that they could not keep it perfectly, but would continue to sin and need a better, even perfect sacrifice. That is how people came to God in ancient times as shown in the Old Testament. But now, God was ending the need for all the sacrifices and law keeping. His holiness and justice required a payment, a permanent and final sacrifice. However, His Love compelled Him to give up the Son he loved so much to make a way for the rest of us, sinners, to have a relationship with Him. After Jesus died, He rose from death, (called the resurrection) and after showing himself in bodily form as evidence to many of his followers, He went up to Heaven where he sits on the throne next to God the Father. He sent His Holy Spirit so that all who believe in Him can have access to

LIFE MATTERS presented by Yuba-Sutter Right To Life Judge Overturns California Law Legalizing Assisted Suicide by Steven Ertelt - LifeNews.com A California judge has overturned the state’s law legalizing assisted suicide, ruling it unconstitutional. The judge indicated the legislature improperly passed the state law during a special session that was supposed to be specifically devoted to Medicare funding. The judge ruled that the state legislature should not have approved the assistedsuicide law during that special session because the subject of the law fell outside the grounds of the special session. Euthanasia activists argued in court that assisted suicide is health care and that made it appropriate for the special session. More than 100 people have killed themselves under the law. Attorneys with Life Legal Defense

Foundation told LifeNews that the assisted suicide law sponsors introduced the bill in a special session of the legislature convened by Governor Jerry Brown to address Medicaid funding shortfalls, services for the disabled, and in-home health support services. Life Legal attorneys appeared in court this morning to argue that the End of Life Option Act, which decriminalizes physician-assisted suicide, is not related or even incidental to the stated purpose of the special session. Suicide is not health care, they argued. Riverside Superior Court Judge Daniel Ottolia agreed, holding that “the End of Life Option Act does not fall within the scope of access to healthcare services,” and that it “is not a matter of health care funding.”

Life Legal filed a motion for judgment on the pleadings in March 2018, arguing that the law should be overturned because the manner in which it was passed is unconstitutional. California Attorney General Xavier Becerra opposed the motion stating that legislation passed during special sessions is presumed to be constitutional. The

Attorney General also argued that the physicians who sued to overturn the law do not have standing to challenge the End of Life Option Act. Judge Ottolia ruled that doctors do have standing to bring challenges on behalf of their patients, especially in this case, as terminally ill patients would face significant difficulties filing their own lawsuits against the assisted suicide statute. “We are thrilled by today’s ruling, which reinstates critical legal protections for vulnerable patients,” said Life Legal Defense Foundation Executive Director Alexandra Snyder. “The court made it very clear that assisted suicide has nothing to do with increasing access to health care and that hijacking the special session to advance an unrelated agenda is impermissible.”

Advocating For Victims of Sex-Trafficking Locally and Beyond “It’s that season again, where students are graduating, schools are releasing their students for the summer months. In the Fall, some English Arts teachers may assign that ‘proverbial lesson’, What did you do this summer? Most students will write about their summer jobs, family vacations, and perhaps a few will have something even more creative in mind. Knowing what I know now, if I could step back in time, I would write to warn everyone about how human traffickers prey on the hopes and dreams of girls and boys next door. It’s that season again. It’s not like there are warning signs posted or letters of caution handed out at graduation ceremonies. But through my own traumatic experiences, The Jenna McKaye Foundation was created to help others who fall victim to human trafficking. I have spent years in the dark with no voice, and now I scream through advocacy for others. With no financial backing, I cared enough to begin the arduous journey of knocking down walls and doors to make

known what is commonplace in our own community. Just because someone is saved from trafficking, doesn’t mean they no longer need help. It’s that season again, where human traffickers will post employment opportunities online, just to interview an unsuspecting teenager or young adult. These predators will be out in full force to find their choice of victim. Promises of jobs, college tuition assistance, internships, free vacations, and the old glamour modeling job snare. The end game is to own y-o-u, but they begin with empty promises, like leading a donkey with a carrot. The Jenna McKaye Foundation is fighting this battle every day, restoring lives. Continued from Page 14: “The Bible Story...” His power and His peace. His followers (originally the 12 apostles, but now all who believe in Christ) are commanded to reach the world with his message of love, hope, and eternal life with Him. One day (which many believe will be soon) Jesus will come back. When He does it will not be like the first time where he was rejected, tortured and killed. Instead, He will come back to rule and reign over the Earth. Finally, Jesus will take all of His children (those who put their faith in Him) to Heaven with Him to enjoy eternal life together! Note: Much has been left out of this summary. The main purpose of the Bible is to show the story of God’s Love through the redemption of a sinful people- us! Although the Bible continues to be proven true in its history, archeology and much more, that is only a byproduct of being inspired by God. The purpose is to

show God’s love through the redemption – that is bringing His people, though disobedient, back into His presence so that a relationship would be restored! This has been God’s plan from the beginning of time. He gave his Word (the Bible) which was written by 40 people over a period of thousands of years. The writers were from different cultures, countries, and careers. Some educated, some not. God divinely inspired each one to write His Word and though there may appear to be problems at first glance, a deeper study of the Bible will confirm that there is perfect unity especially in the most important aspect- reconciling us to God, the redemption of mankind! If you would like to speak to someone about how you can receive Jesus as your sacrifice for sin and enter into a relationship with our Heavenly Father, please contact one of the churches listed on p. 3 or email editor@ambassadornewspaper.com.

Finding Freedom in God’s Perfect Peace If you would like to experience the peace and transformed life that God can provide through Jesus Christ and you are willing to commit your life to the only one who can truly set you free from your sin, you can pray to the Lord right now and ask Him to forgive you of your sins. Because of what His Son, Jesus, did by dying on the cross, your sins will not be held against you by God anymore. You can experience freedom for the rest of your life on earth and then have a life in Heaven with God for eternity. God’s part of the deal is already done. Your part is to confess your sins, repent (or change your ways) and believe that He is Lord. If your life is out of control, let Him take over control. ISRAEL AND IRAN ON THE BRINK? million lives, and has displaced a wave of refugees the likes of which we haven’t seen since World War II. As I speak, within Syria’s borders are the following cast of characters: Kurds rebelling against Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad; Turks seeking to crush any Kurdish idea of forming a state; remnants of ISIS are there, as are Russians, American troops, and Sunni fighters, including Al-Qaeda. And if that weren’t enough, the Shiite terrorist organization Hezbollah is in Syria as well, fighting for Assad. And of course, there’s the Syrian military, with a proven propensity for using chemical weapons on its own people. But perhaps most ominous of all, forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran—Israel’s sworn enemy—have used the Syrian civil war to attempt to establish a permanent

military presence on Israel’s doorstep, complete with Revolutionary Guards, drones, naval bases, and offensive missiles. Given the consistent threats of Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei to turn Tel Aviv into dust, a permanent Iranian military presence in Syria is clearly a red line for the Israelis. According to all the analysis I’ve read, neither Israel nor Iran want an all-out war. Okay—I have my doubts about Iran. And the kindling is piling up. A spark of any kind could ignite a major conflagration in the Middle East. We all should pray that doesn’t happen. So far, the signs aren’t good. Last week, the Israeli Defense Forces shot down what they claimed was an armed Iranian drone over Israel. In response, the IDF

then destroyed the base where the drone was launched, killing Iranian military in the process. To retaliate, Iran’s so-called “elite” Quds Force launched 20 missiles at Israeli military posts in the Golan Heights. Israel responded with a massive wave of air and missile strikes against Iranian military targets around Syria. The Trump Administration has made clear that the United States will stand firmly on the side of Israel, as we should. Not only is Israel our only true ally in the Middle East, it’s the sole stable democracy, surrounded by Islamist dictatorships, secular dictatorships, terrorist organizations like Hezbollah and the Palestinian Hamas, as well as the chaos in Syria.

by John Stonestreet and David Carlson Breakpoint.org Are Israel and Iran on the brink of war? It’s a hugely important question from a confusing part of the world. I’ll try to bring a bit of clarity. The Middle East is a complicated place—okay, that’s what’s known as an understatement. Not only is there civil war in Yemen, with Saudi Arabia duking it out with Iranian-backed forces, protests are flaring up in Gaza, and the terrorist group Hezbollah is gaining political ascendancy in Lebanon. The U.S. may be followed by other nations in moving embassies to Jerusalem, and the Trump Administration just announced it is pulling out of the Iranian nuclear deal. But the most significant and confusing events right now may be in Syria. Syria’s civil war has cost an estimated half-

IN THE NEWS Continued From Page 16 - “Israel and Iran... American Christians have long stood with the Jewish state. In fact, years ago on this program, here’s what Chuck Colson had to say: We must recall the words of Genesis 12, verses 1 and 2, regarding the ancient Israelites. God says, “I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse.” Of course, we mustn’t confuse the modern nation-state of Israel with the people of the Old Covenant. But it’s clear in Romans 10 and 11 that Paul

understands God’s special concern for the Jews. Certainly America’s own sense of decency demands that we help protect Israel—the Jewish homeland and the only true democracy in the Middle East. If ever there were a time to take seriously the injunction of the psalmist, this would be such a time: “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. May those who love you be secure. May there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels” (Psalm 122). Amen.

EDITORIAL PERSECUTION ON THE RISE IN AMERICA by Jon Skillman Several recent letters to the editor of our local paper have caused me pause. There seems to be an increase in anti-Christian sentiment, especially from the LGBTQ community. I can kind of understand their angst. Christianity exposes and reminds them of their sin and they really don’t understand why. For example, one letter writer claimed tolerance is the cornerstone of religion. Well it may be the foundation of the Progressive Humanistic Church of What’s Happening Now, but it’s definitely not the cornerstone of Christianity…Christ is. And He is not tolerant of sin, He hates it... yet He loves the sinner and commands us to do likewise. This is a difficult concept for the secular world to understand. They see us as intolerant and haters but we’re really only intolerant…of their sin. The letter then demands Christians to mind our own business in regard to all things LGBTQ. Wait a minute, who’s really sticking their nose into whose business? I mean as a Christian my business is living a life according to the moral standards set forth by God. And if I happen to be a Christian baker, florist, photographer or venue owner and I refuse to compromise God’s standards by participating in the celebration of perversion…the LGBTQ Gestapo comes a marchin’ in to shut me down. And, if I refuse to use inaccurate pronouns the LGBTQ speech police slap me with a fine.

So it’s really the LGBTQ movement that is seriously minding my business and acting intolerant towards me. But wait, there’s more. “At one time,” the writer continues, “Christians lived by example and gentle persuasion. Now they wear their beliefs like a chip on their shoulders electing and supporting a president resembling the antichrist, to champion their beliefs. For that they have lost all credibility.” But Isn’t the chip actually resting on the shoulders of the LGBTQ crowd? After all, aren’t they telling us how we are to act and vote? Another letter draws this comparison between heterosexuals and homosexuals: “…most of the sodomy is committed by heterosexuals and most heterosexuals in America identify as Christians, meaning they are responsible for the moral decline in this nation.” Can’t argue with that logic...there isn’t any. Hey, did I detect an unintentional admission that homosexuality is indeed sodomy? The increase in letters such as these indicates to me, that persecution of Christians is on the rise. And makes it obvious it is driven by ignorance and hate. It sure would be nice if the LGBTQ folks would practice the tolerance they so love to preach. Jesus warns and promises in Mark 13:13, “All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm until the end will be saved.“

“Screen For Our Lives” I don’t often write about purely political or social issues but mostly ones that have a spiritual truth or challenge to it. This time I feel that I need to make a statement regarding the current “March for our lives” trend. First, let me say that it is good to see young people take a stand for something important. This younger generation has seen its share of violence and godlessness that has finally lit a fire. However, I don’t think the problem will be solved by their demands. Removing guns through gun control is a hotly contested issue and although I do believe that changes need to be made in access, backgrounds, other issues regarding obtaining guns, I don’t think the problem will go away by taking all of our guns away. The issue is much broader. Not everyone who has a gun, kills people. Something happens in the mind and soul of a person who commits that kind of act of violence (especially an act that takes multiple lives). There are considerable mental health issues that we find (after the fact) which signaled some observers there may be a potential problem. Often, the shooter has been the object of bullying and/or grown insensitive to life through violent videos, etc. Sometimes the shooter shoots themselves in a suicide but sometimes the rage causes a shooter to kill others first before taking their own life (or not). We all want an end to gun violence (and violence of any kind for that matter), but the issue at hand is the gun violence within school grounds perpetrated against our children. The

Seth Halpern - Editor larger issue of gun violence in our nation is not my current topic. I am wondering specifically about school shootings. Why are they happening? I keep asking the question: “Why aren’t our schools more secure?”. Responses I’ve heard range from “it’s too expensive to secure every school” to “We don’t want to make them prisons”. My reply is simply “Really??”. First of all, can we put a price on our children’s safety? And we all said “NO”. Isn’t a prison a place where we don’t let people out? I’m calling for safe places, where we don’t let bad people in. We don’t need “free environment open-campuses”. We need safe places for our children. There is tighter security in other kinds of government buildings. Why not schools? Why not have armed officers at the door and backpacks scanned? I’ve been to campuses where guests are told to sign in at the office but no one is there to enforce that. These are just my thoughts. You may very well oppose them and have a different solution. That’s why we are a great nation that allows freedom of speech and belief. God bless you and God bless our children
