By Seth Halpern/Editor Happy New Year! Hello January! Many of us have been waiting for you. For some reason, January is the acceptable starting point. The kickoff, runners starting block, tip-off or first hole depending on which sport you’re playing. Every January, fitness centers see a huge surge in membership. Whether it’s getting in shape, a new try at dieting, stopping smoking, or whatever it is we need to change, January is the month to start. But Why? Is it simply because we hang a new calendar? Do we have to wait until January to start? Are we so conditioned by New Year’s Resolutions that we can’t try to better ourselves any other time of year? don’t make it past mid-January! The reality is that we can try to change any day of the year. January 1 is no better a day to make a positive change than April 24th or October 7th. Yet, we even make spiritual beginnings on January 1st. How many devotional or Bible reading plans begin on July 15th? No, they begin on January 1 (unless they are the non-dated type). Wouldn’t it be great to have a “Life Reset” button? You know, when things are just going badly and you just need a fresh start. For some, it might be a relationship gone sour. For others, it’s an addiction that you can’t beat. For many of us, it could be the areas of heart that only we (and GOD) know about. Those secret areas, pet sins, prideful attitudes or maybe

the opposite. Maybe nagging insecurities or painful memories. Yes, it would be nice to have a “Reset” button to do away with the past and start all over. Unfortunately, while devices that clear memory or reformat peoples’ minds may be seen in some sci-fi films, our current reality doesn’t have such a device. However, there is something that works in the spiritual realm. The truth is that we can change anytime. In fact, the Lord would be pleased for us to hit the “reset” button just as soon as we’ve failed, confessed, and repented. That is His Reset button. He calls us to do exactly that. He doesn’t want you or I to spend one more minute in anxiety, insecurity, failure or sin. I’m NOT saying that life will be perfect,

happy and free of trouble or suffering. The Lord does not promise a Pollyanna experience in this life on earth. Yet, while the situation that we find ourselves in may not be great, our heart, soul, mind and spirit can be right with God and totally at peace. Getting back to the things that need to change, whatever area we need to change, God will help you. If you are willing, the Holy Spirit will tell you what areas need to change. Again, these may be outward destructive behaviors like addiction or gluttony, etc or inward matters of the heart (judgementalism, racism, insecurity, anxiety, etc). When you read God’s Word (the Bible), the Holy Spirit will convict

INSPIRATION 2019 - A Gift by April James www.BeyondTheSilverCoin.org 2019 is finally here. It has been a few millennium in the making. What shall we do with the gift of 2019 we have been given? Yes, I call it a gift, a present, one with which we should engaged. For God has created and entrusted us with it. Psalm 118:24 says “This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it”. 2019 is a year the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it. We’ve all come through tough and trying times, some more than others. David certainly knew hard times living in caves and fleeing for his life from his father in law, King Saul, though he had done no wrong. There was even a time David’s own men wanted to kill him after all had been taken away; but what do we find David doing? He encouraged himself in the Lord, another translation states David found strength in the Lord his God. There are days when we don’t feel like rejoicing, when it’s the last thing on our mind; our mood is downcast, it’s difficult to look up or find a silver lining in the clouds. We find the Psalmists were right there with us, and they laid it out before the Lord not hiding their feelings from him, yet, as they talked with the Lord

their prayers ended in praise. God has given us this day, this year, to know him more intimately, to serve him, to walk in his extravagant love, and to know His amazing grace; God still has plans for good, to give us a future and a hope Further, Romans 8:28 states “And we know that in all things, God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose”. Are these not all something worth rejoicing over? Gods’ looking for Kingdom ambassadors, not just inside the church but outside of its four walls; those who will take the Good News to others, who will cheer others up, be a support and encouragement; to share a kind word or smile, to let them know they are not alone, to give hope. We can’t all touch everyone, but we can all touch someone. Maybe it’s the person behind us in the checkout line, taking our order, or perhaps dials our number in error – is it really an error or divine set up?. Many things in life are a matter of choice. Will we choose to seek first the Kingdom of God in 2019? Will we choose to rejoice in it? Will we choose to be Kingdom ambassadors in the home, on the street, or in the marketplace? What will we choose to do with the gift of 2019?

This New Year’s Goal? Bridge Building! by Christy Boals www.gracefilledpurpose.com I know, I know, you are probably thinking, “New Year’s goals? I haven’t even cleaned up the last of the wrapping paper from Christmas!” But bear with me, I’ll be kind. I have been thinking a lot about goals lately and how people succeed or fail in reaching their goals. Having a goal is a great thing; however, I recently read a quote by Antoine de Saint-Exupery that says, “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” So how do we go from having a great vision or goal to actually accomplishing it? I am a huge fan of the one step in front of the other approach. I recently called this “bridge building” in a conversation I was having. I was not thinking of a huge bridge like the Golden Gate, but more like a rock path across a waterway that is just a little too deep to wade. I pictured each step as a rock you place one at a time in front of you, as you move toward your goal on the other side. The great thing about doing things one

step at a time is the momentum effect. You may only be making one step at a time, but those steps have a way of adding up until all of a sudden you are much farther along than you even realized. Take the example of saving up for something you want to purchase. It may not seem like a lot at first to put one dollar in an envelope, but before you know it, if you keep taking a step at a time, suddenly it is time to go shopping! I would encourage you in these first few days of the year to allow yourself to dream a little. What are some goals you would like to achieve this next year? Take some time to talk with God and see what He may be placing in your heart for the new year. After you figure out where you want to go, just take the first step. Congratulations! You are one step closer to your goal. Remember, bridges aren’t built in a day, but by continuing to put down one “rock” at a time you can achieve amazing things this year. “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. by Paula McBride When you opened your Christmas gift last month did you pull out an item that was brand spanking new? How long did that newness last? It’s said that when we buy a brand spanking new car, it loses its value, or newness, the moment we drive it off the car lot. What else can you think of that was once new, but is now laid aside? There were new moments in 2018 that are now gone forever, yet 2019 has opened up, and it’s “brand spanking new.” What does that strange phrase mean anyway? Follow me to “The Phrase Finder”, and I’ll share some facts you word buffs may enjoy. (If you’re not

a word buff, you can skip to the last paragraphs to see where I’m going with this.) If we start with just “brand new”, we see that the phrase is very old. The Phrase Finder says it was first cited in a sermon by John Foxe in 1570, where he said, “New bodies, new minds, and all things brande newe.” Probably rooted in the German language, brand can mean “fire” or “something from the forge fire, thus absolutely new.” We know a brand as the long metal rod heated and used to make a permanent mark of ownership on one’s possessions. It shows the origin of a particular product or its maker. So where does “spanking” fit in? Since the verb “to spank” came about fifty years later, it does not refer to a

form of discipline. Instead, it means “exceptionally large or fine”. Other ways the term was used was spick and span new, or bran span new. God, in His mercy, has given us a brand spanking new year. Nothing about it is random. God is the origin of all life. He is our Maker, and the brand of ownership, our name, is engraved on His hand (Isaiah 49:16). He ordained every day of this year before even one came to be (Psalm 139:16). What newness will God bring into this year? He promises new life, a new song, a new heart, and ultimately a new creation. The Bible uses the word “new” 280 times. Revelation 21:5 says, “He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said,

“Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” Think of it! A shattered heart can be “exceptionally”, new even if it still hurts. A displaced life can be “spick and span” new even in hard times. When we lose our song, we can ask the Lord for a brand spanking new one even if we sing through tears. When we lose hope, we can soak in the promise of Lamentations 3:22-23, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore, I will wait for him.” As we wait for His coming, let’s celebrate 2019, a brand spanking new year!

LIFE MATTERS presented by Yuba-Sutter Right To Life California Taxpayers Have Been Forced to Spend $700 Million to Kill Almost 1 Million Babies in Abortions by Micaiah Bilger – Lifenews.com Whether they like it or not, California taxpayers pay for women's elective abortions. This may include paying for underage girls to get abortions without their parents' knowledge or consent, for abortions on viable, later-term unborn babies and even for sex-selection abortions, none of which are prohibited in California. The total price-tag for those abortions is almost $700 million, according to Live Action . Medi-Cal, the state medical assistance program for low-income individuals, pays for women and girls to abort their unborn babies. Sixteen other states force taxpayers to pay for elective abortions as well. An analysis of the program spending found that California taxpayers paid more than $358 million for 840,000 unborn babies to be aborted between 2000 and 2014 alone. It estimated the total spending on abortion at nearly $700 million in the past 25 years. The state government reports do not give many details about the abortions or the ages of the unborn babies, but they do list the types of abortion procedures paid for by state taxpayers. Among

these are D&E abortions, which involve dismembering second-trimester unborn babies by tearing them limb from limb while their hearts still are beating. D&E abortions are done up to 24 weeks, meaning potentially viable, healthy unborn babies are aborted at taxpayers' expense in California. About 80,000 D&E abortions were paid for by taxpayers between 2003and 2014, according to the analysis. It is not clear how many unborn babies are aborted in California each year because the state does not report its abortion numbers to the Centers for Disease Control. The Guttmacher Institute, a proabortion research group, reported 157,350 abortions in 2014 in California. California has some of the most radically pro-abortion laws in the world, but state lawmakers are pushing for more. Earlier this month, state Sen. Connie Leyva introduced a bill to mandate that all public colleges and universities provide free abortions to students on campus. Abortion activists also have been pushing for taxpayer-funded abortions nation-wide. At the federal level, the Hyde Amendment prohibits federal Medicaid funding for abortions except in the cases of rape, incest or risks to the life of the

mother. However, some states choose to fund elective abortions and others do so as a result of court orders. In November, however, voters approved a constitutional amendment that makes it clear that their state does not recognize abortion as a "right" or require taxpayer funding of abortions. Polls consistently show that most Americans do not want their tax dollars to pay for abortions. A Marist poll found that two-thirds of Americans oppose taxpayer funding of abortions, including a majority of women and people who identify as pro-choice. In 2016, a Politico/ Harvard University poll also found that just 36 percent of likely voters supported taxpayer funding for abortions, while 58 percent opposed it.

you (show you your guilt and sin). He calls you to confess (tell it to God and maybe others) and repent (change your ways). He doesn’t just leave you to figure it out for yourself. The Lord leads and guides you through the new changes by giving you wisdom (ask for it, He will give it ) and opportunities to do the right thing. He’ll also provide people to help you along the way. It will take work from us (doesn’t anything good

take work?) using self-control, removing ourselves from temptation to repeat the wrongful attitude or behavior. Soon, it will get easier and probably “natural”. Remember, lasting change often takes a “supernatural” (God-led) push. At some point, it should become part of our new and normal life. Do you need to hit the “reset” button today? If so, God is ready to help you press it any day of the year!

9 Unbiblical Statements That Christians Believe (Part 1) by Shane Pruitt @shane_pruitt78 One of the greatest gifts that God gave mankind was the Holy Bible because the Bible is literally God revealing Himself, and communicating Himself to mankind in written word. Anything and everything that we know about God comes from these Holy Scriptures, and they contain the totality of what we need to know about becoming a Christian, and everything that we need to know about living the Christian life. Orthodox Christianity teaches that the Bible was inspired and authored by the Holy Spirit of God using human instruments. It also believes that in it’s original languages of Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic; it is without error and fault. However, there are many things that Jesus-following, Church-going, Biblebelieving Christians believe that are completely unbiblical. How does this happen? Often, we’ll hear someone quote a statement that sounds nice to us, and we’ll begin repeating it as though it’s Biblical truth without ever researching it in the Scriptures. Several of these unbiblical statements have gained enough

traction that many people believe they’re actually Bible verses. Not only are the statements unbiblical; most of them teach the opposite of what the Bible teaches. Here is a list of nine popular unbiblical statements that Christians tend to believe: God helps those who help themselves. This statement is actually anti-Gospel. Self-reliance and self-righteousness, or the attitude of trying harder and doing better actually gets in the way of the work of God. Jesus saves those who die to themselves: “Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me (Matthew 16:24).” God wants me to be happy. It’s a common belief that God exists to be our “personal genie” waiting to give us our every wish. It’s amazing how we will justify our sinful actions by saying, “God just wants me to be happy.” Happiness is tied to feelings and emotions that are often based on circumstances, and those change all the time. God wants us to be obedient to Him, trust Him, and know that everything He does is for our good, even if it doesn’t make me feel “happy” in that moment. “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for

good, for those who are called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28).” We’re all God’s children Although, God has created everyone. . .not everyone relationally belongs to Him. Only those who have repented of sin, placed their faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, and possess the Holy Spirit of God inside of them can claim Him as their Father: “But you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God (Romans 8:15b – 16).” However, those who don’t have Jesus as their Savior, nor have the Holy Spirit of God inside of them actually belong to Satan: “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience (Ephesians 2:1 – 2).” “By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother (1 John 3:10).”

by Kaycee Lane My name is Kaycee Lane. I am 43 yrs old. I was a heroin addict or 28 yrs. I lost 3 children to my addiction. I lost many other things as well. Two years ago, my pain was so great that I tried to take my own life. The scars on my wrists are a reminder of what God has healed me from. I have been clean and sober from heroin and alcohol for 7 months. I’ve been at the Salvation Army Depot Family Crisis Center for two months. My walk with God is growing every day and my life is changing in so many ways. I wrote a letter to a dentist in Yuba City about my teeth and the dental office called me yesterday and is blessing me with teeth for Christmas! The abundant blessings that God is raining on me is amazing and it’s a miracle that only a few months ago I was living on the river in a tent and now I am looking forward to the plans the Lord has for me, plans for a hope and a future. I pray that the addicts who still suffer out there can get a glimpse of hope from my story. God is good all the time!

At 2:10 in the morning I heard a crash. Awakened from a deep sleep, I went into the hallway separating our room from theirs, I turned on the hallway light. I couldn’t comprehend what I was seeing. There was a car buried in my children’s bedrooms. I ran back to get my husband and then just started screaming. We were unable to get to my girls’ room at all. The car had completely driven through their room and into my son’s room. My husband was able to squeeze through a tiny hole at the top of his door and slide down into his room. I called 9-1-1 all while screaming for my children. My husband yelled to me that my son was okay. The car had come through his wall and pushed his bed, but he was okay. My daughters room was completely destroyed as the car had driven right through it. By Gods own protection, my girls were not hurt. It was truly a miracle. My middle daughter’s bed was completely covered with debris, including our washer and dryer, mirrored closet doors, dry wall, except for a 2ft section where she had been sleeping.

The police arrived and they immediately asked me where the driver of the car had gone. I had been standing next to the car the entire time, but I had never seen him. We soon found out that he had slid through the wreckage down onto my oldest daughters bed, dripping blood while she cowered in the corner. He broke her window and ran away. He was later apprehended. That was the most terrifying night of our lives for we had thought that we had lost all 3 of our children. After the event, we found out that the man who had been driving was a young, 27-year-old man with previous DUI’s. He had been drinking that night as well. We were in constant contact with the District Attorney’s office and we

went to all of the court dates. Throughout this entire process, we sat in the lobby of the courthouse with the driver every time. I knew who he was but wasn’t sure if he knew me. The first time we were in the same room, I felt God pushing me to talk to him. I buried that deep down and left that day not saying a word. God kept working on me. I regretted not saying anything, but I was scared to talk to him. What do I say? The next time I saw him, I felt like I was physically wrestling with God. Our spirits were tangled together, mine trying to push what I knew God wanted me to do away. I knew that if I didn’t listen to God, I would never forget or forgive myself.

So, I took a deep breath and walked over to the man. I had absolutely no idea what I was going to say or what was going to happen. He was with his father and another man. I sat down next to him and asked him, “Do you know who I am?” He shook his head and I told him that I was the mother of the three kids whose rooms he had driven through. Everyone in that lobby took a deep breath. No one knew what was going to happen next, including myself. I proceeded to tell him that we were all okay and that I forgave him. I told him that we pray for him and that we hope that he’s okay. He was facing a tough future because he was going to prison. He apologized for what he had done. His father thanked me and then we walked into the courtroom together to hear his fate. 18 months in prison as well as monetary restitution. His life was about to look a lot different and they took him away that day. When I look back at this time in my life, it’s never about being brave or anything I did. I fought God hard that day. It’s about thankfulness that my Savior loves me so much that he gave me the opportunity for forgiveness. I have no idea how that man took what I said that day. I do know that I get to move on and let it go. If I would have held onto the hurt and anger that I had, it would have eaten me up. Forgiveness wasn't just for him. Forgiveness was also for me.

Mexico Mission Trip by Rebekah Dahm My name is Rebekah Dahm, I have just graduated high school December 2018, and over Thanksgiving break I had the privilege of serving at an orphanage in Vicente Guerrero, Mexico. I went with a small team from Abundant Life Church in Rocklin. It was my second trip to the orphanage and I am already planning for the next one. At the orphanage, our main goal is to assist with the upkeep of the campus. Doing the small things allows the staff to have more time to invest in the children. This may not seem like the ideal missions work, but it is both important and rewarding, and although chores are our main service, we do get to assist with outreaches and house-sitting. The outreaches are done in the surrounding communities and are focused on providing children with a protein filled snack and more importantly, the Word of God. House-sitting is always a pleasure. It is when we entertain the children at the orphanage so that their house parent, the people who look after the different houses, can have a muchneeded break. Many of the team members I went with have been going down there for ten or more years. It is truly amazing to see the relationships they have made with

the children and even the staff at the orphanage. Something our leader always says is, “love people and keep showing up.” On my first trip, I didn’t understand exactly what he meant by that; however, this time I began to grasp it. I realized that while one good deed is still a good thing, it won’t make a lasting impact. In order to

truly show the love of Christ you have to keep showing up and continuously love people because God’s love is persistent. Seeing the joy of all the kids when they saw that we had come again is what led me to this new understanding. They would have been happy to have any visitors, but they have a different appreciation for the people who keep showing up. Another thing I learned in my time there is the necessity of a good support system. Ministry and especially missions can become overwhelming and it is

important to have a group of believers whom you can go to for prayer and encouragement. In today’s world it’s becoming increasingly hard to do the Lord’s work and the only people who will truly understand your struggles are other followers of Christ. I will never again underestimate the value of a strong God

based friendship. The bond you form with your team members is amazing as well. When you are in a foreign country, the people you go with are your support system for that mission. Whether you are best friends already or practically strangers, there is a certain trust and camaraderie within the group. It is such a unique bond that it doesn’t matter if I never see some of them again, I will forever have a certain affinity for all of them. These valuable lessons and unique

relationships are why I continue to go to Mexico. The trials I face and the uncertainties that come with missions work are made worth enduring because of wisdom I come home with and the joy we are able to give the children.

If I Had It To Do Over Again I would love my wife more in front of my children. I would laugh with my children more – at our mistakes and our joys. I would listen more – even to the youngest child. I would be more honest about my own weaknesses and stop pretending perfection. I would pray differently for my family. I would do more things with my children. I would be more encouraging and bestow more praise. I would pay more attention to little things, deeds and words of love and kindness. Finally, if I had it to do over again, I would share God more intimately with my family. I would use ordinary things that happened in every ordinary day to point them to God. Author Unknown

Christian, Rethink Your Public Speech

by Jim Elliff www.ccwtoday.org Believer, if you truly relish a life of turmoil, public anger, boiling arguments, caustic debates and throwing out verbal darts like porcupine quills, you will genuinely help the cause of Christ by not identifying publicly as a Christian. I’m serious. We are in desperate need of Christian wisdom, but not barbaric untamed and undignified rhetoric. It’s doing us no good. Try this test of your speech first: “The wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. offensive in our message alone that we should severely minimize sharp undignified words on so many fronts. There may be a time when we prayerfully must speak to this issue or that. However, “the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God” (James 1:20). Those among us who have leaked too much toxin into the air already likely won’t be taken with much seriousness anyway. Seek to be more like Jesus. Sure, he sometimes used strong language. But he was the Son of God. Yet he was also an example of careful, reasonable wellplaced speech. He wasn’t a reactor. He “committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in his mouth; and while being reviled he did not revile in return; while suffering, he uttered no threats, but kept entrusting himself to him who judges righteously” (1 Peter 22-22). Our words are so important. Reevaluate. Are you doing good for the Kingdom of God by inconsiderate and unreasonable speech? Please think about it. Something must change if we are to be heard.

The value of many of these questions is not in their profundity, but in the simple fact that they bring an issue or commitment into focus. For example, just by articulating which person you most want to encourage this year is more likely to help you remember to encourage that person than if you hadn’t considered the question. If you’ve found these questions helpful, you might want to put them someplace— in a day planner, PDA, calendar, bulletin board, etc.—where you can review them more frequently than once a year.

World's First Christian Airline Is Set to Launch, Will Provide Churches, Missionaries with Easier Travel by Kayla Koslosky ChristianHeadlines.com Editor A Texas-based aviation ministry announced last week that they are working to become the first Christian airline in the world. According to CBN News, the ministry called Judah 1 shared last week that the Federal Aviation Administration had accepted their application to become its own airline as opposed to a private operator. Currently, Judah 1 is providing their service to Christians traveling domestically and internationally for mission trips and religious tours, CBN News reports. "We serve missions minded Christian people of all denominations traveling

to the mission fields of the world. Our planes have delivered hundreds of missionaries and transported thousands of pounds of cargo. It is very rewarding to know how many Judah 1 and our partners have helped. This includes the thousands who have been seen in medical clinics and the thousands who have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior. It is our passion to help you reach the estimated two and a half billion people who do not know Jesus and it only takes YOUR HANDS, GOD'S LOVE, OUR WINGS," the ministry’s website details. Judah 1 is working to become an airline to make the traveling experience for missionaries easier. In a video outlining the ministry’s growth plan, the ministry’s founder and CEO Everett Aaron noted that

this move will eliminate the hecticness of security checks and lost baggage at traditional airports. Aaron wrote in the announcement on the website that this move will also allow the ministry to help even more people. He wrote, “This means Judah 1 (upon

receiving its DOT and 121 Certification) will have the freedom to transport as many different churches and mission organizations as we can.” He added. “This is a huge honor and privilege and we give God all the glory!”

Silence & Solitude

fit in. Romans 12:2 tells us we weren’t created to fit into this world: “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is…His good, pleasing and perfect will.” No, we are not made unique to fit into this world…we are created unique to fit into the Body of Christ (which is The Church). Romans 12:4-5 teaches. “Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body…” You know what? John Sedwick knew this. He did not hide his uniqueness… he celebrated it and lived it! I believe John fit into Christ’s Body right where God had planned, and he functioned just as God had intended. “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God has prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10. After the service, as we fellowshipped over a meal, I heard myself uttering an all too familiar lament; “I sure wish I had gotten to know, John better.” And I wondered why I hadn’t. But wait a minute, I think I just did.

Our church lost a brother to the Camp Fire. John Sedwick was a man best described as unique. He was a man I thought I knew, but as family and friends shared stories and experiences at his memorial service, I realized…I knew him not. Oh I could pick him out of a crowd, I had talked to him an we had attended Sunday School together but I didn’t really know John the person, John the individual, John that unique creation of God. I thought about just how fearfully and wonderfully made we truly are. I pondered over the many textures and flavors of humanity. The rough to the smooth, the bitter to the sweet, all those wonderful shades of difference that distinguish each and every one of us from any other person in, or out of this world. I marveled about the way God uses His mystical coil of DNA to knit us into a pattern unlike any other...a special means to fulfill God’s purpose. But there is one thing I don’t understand…well there’s really a lot of things I don’t understand, but this one is quite perplexing. If God goes to such great lengths to create us unique, why do we go to such great lengths to appear the same? I mean, why do we tend to disguise ourselves in order to be accepted…or to

I caught up with a friend of mine whom I had seen from time to time but not sat down for a deeper meeting of the souls. Some sit for a meeting of the minds. Not this friend. He gets right to the soul. As we shared (mostly me), I began thinking and talking and more thinking. As I shared about things going on deep in my soul, he made a statement about what he’s been learning. He talked about Silence and Solitude. Wow, that is one of the simplest yet most elusive things in life. Just Silence and Solitude. That phrase and his description has continued to chirp in my soul. It is SO difficult amidst the chaos and frenzy of everyday life to set apart time for Silence and Solitude. Whether you are a stay at home mom (or dad), work full time, or self-employed, TIME is the one of the most valuable commodities in all of life. Yet, even when we have the luxury of some leisure time, what do we do with it? Most of us are doing something: Playing golf, going to a movie, watching tv or whatever. Usually we’re doing something that is not silent and usually it is not alone. So, there goes Silence and Solitude. Of course, there is nothing wrong with leisure interests and certainly nothing wrong with interacting with friends and family. But there is one relationship that often requires that silence and solitude.

Although, He is pleased by corporate worship and our fellowship with other believers, it is in the quiet and alone with us that He speaks to our hearts. If we don’t allow that time, we will forfeit some of the most meaningful and rewarding times of all. Keep in mind that it is not only our busyness that keeps us from these times. We also have a spiritual enemy (the devil) who makes it his business to distract us from any meaningful time with the Lord. He knows that it will strengthen our faith and he wants nothing to do with that! Let me challenge you as my friend challenged me. Make one of your goals in 2019 to spend time regularly at the feet of Jesus in Silence and Solitude and you will be glad you did! Happy New Year!
