Now where is the marmalade?
After way too long a break I am back in France looking out at a rather overgrown garden and a builder trying to make a rather rough wall look like something it isn’t! Despite the rather poor weather it is great to have a change of scene and look through the latest catalogue with fresh eyes. Janet and Kayleigh have been working away over the past few weeks to put together our latest collection. Our suppliers seem to be launching new things at rather random times so planning catalogues has become more and more difficult this year, but we are sure that the selection includes lots of exciting things.
With the impending arrival of our first grandchild, we are looking at all things baby these days and remarking how much has changed since the days that we were looking for such things before our son was born. How much more complicated life is, so many things that we had never heard of are now essentials! One thing that has still remained a constant are some of the characters that we enjoyed as children, our son enjoyed, and I am sure our grandchild will enjoy. It was therefore with great excitement that we heard from Merrythought that they were going to be launching a new and very special bear in May. They teased us with details, but we quickly guessed which special bear it was and readied the marmalade!
We are delighted to have a classic Paddington from a very British company. I have such fond memories of reading the books, long before the film or cartoon, and laughing over the antics of a very mischievous bear and his adoptive family the Brown’s. Not to mention Aunt Lucy’s fearsome hard stare! Paddington was a big part of so many of our childhoods it is great to see a new interpretation of him. He was certainly thrust in front of the world when he had tea with the late Queen and we found out what she really kept in that handbag! We only have a limited allocation of this piece at present so if you want one I would urge you to act now to secure it.
The launch of a new Royal Crown Derby paperweight is a rare event these days and we were expecting to be able to show you a new piece in this catalogue, hence the timing of this catalogue is slightly different to usual. However at the last minute the sample was not available and we have had to make some hasty changes to the page plans. Rest assured as soon as we have details, we will be sending them out. If you do not have email and would like details by post, please let us know.
Our new ranges of jewellery certainly seem to have caught the attention of many of you. Our skilled team in the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham have been busy again adding new items to the collection which we hope you will like. It is always a joy to work with skilled craftspeople and having them based just down the road is even better.
We have worked with the De Rosa family for over 10 years now and I have known Jorge De Rosa for a lot longer than that. Jorge and his daughter Agustina are a delight to work with and the creativity of their team is amazing. Each piece is hand carved in the clay state before being fired and then hand painted and gilded. A huge range of tools are used to achieve the effects that make their pieces so unique. They are always pushing the boundaries when it comes to both design and size. We now have a big following for this range and are delighted to bring you a number of new additions. If you have not studied the range before then do give it a look as they really are superb pieces of art.
The 80th anniversary of the D Day landings will be upon us shortly and we have been delighted at the reaction to the range that Caroline has designed for us. We now have the range in stock and the images in the catalogue are of the finished pieces, not visuals. This and the Churchill anniversary range are made and decorated in Stoke on Trent by small family owned potteries that we have worked with for many years. We think it is fitting that commemoratives of this type should be made in the UK.
Royal Crown Derby has always been a big part of Goviers and we are always looking for rare and interesting pieces that you might not have in your collection. We are always happy to give you a price for your collection if you are looking to downsize and we try to give fair prices. We have recently acquired several collections with some interesting pieces in which Steffi has inspected and photographed to include in this catalogue. We do run a “Wish List” for anyone looking for particular pieces that they are after. Despite a bit of blue sky I can see dark clouds in the distance so I think the gardening will have to wait and indoor jobs will be on the list for this afternoon! I hope the pages below bring a little bit of sunshine, and many memories of Paddington’s antics.

Bred by Maureen Foster, the Meleri iris has streaming pennants and falls holding a rich, mulberry border. Maureen lived in Crickhowell and so chose a Welsh name for her Iris.
Bred by Fred Raines, these soft, honeysuckle and lilac coloured iris, with orange beards are named in honour of one of the Group’s members.
With a sweet lemon aroma, this frilly flower with pale lemon standards and white falls are edged with zesty lemon. Bred by Margaret Owen, and named after her late husband, Godfrey Owen.
On this prestigious vase Iris ‘Orinoco Flow’, bred by Cy Bartlett, has stylised Art Nouveau ribbons and curves and six white flowers, showcasing standards and falls finely speckled with violet, a beard white, tipped zany-orange, and bordered with violet.
Iris ‘Canary Girls’ has ruffled petals of gold against fluffy-white petticoats. Bred by Fred Raines, it honours the women whose skin turned yellow-orange from making the UK’s TNT shells of World War I.
Cotsgold is a bright gold bearded iris, tinged with orange. A little bee reminds you to be on time! Bred by John Taylor in 1974. He won a Dykes Medal for ‘Cotsgold’ (IB, 1978).

‘Sugar Candy’ is a Pacific Coast Iris (PCI) bred by Marjorie Brummitt and named after her dog ‘Candy’. Elegant fawn and maroon flowers are diagonally mirrored on this exqisite plaque. Numbered Edition

This Siberian iris bred by Jennifer Hewitt, named after her late husband Peter, has regal blue-violet standards and falls with a very thin gold edge and a striking gold central signal with dark veining at each base.

The deeply-colourful purple Siberian Iris ‘Margaret Gillian’, bred by Jennifer Hewitt and named after her dear friend ‘Margaret Gillian’, is shown here on this stunning double-bulb shaped vase.
On this plaque a hedgehog can be spotted scurrying through bluebell circles in search of roaming earwigs, millipedes and beetles. Two little dark-brown eyes peep out from beneath a headscarf of spines in Timid Curiosity.

New York’s iconic 102 storey Art Deco inspired Empire State Building, is uniquely captured by Vicky on this jug, detailing the streamline façade of the building, the rich gilt motifs, bronze palette and opulent gold lustre.
Vicky’s Secrets of the Reedbed celebrates the 60th anniversary of RSPB Leighton Moss this year. Britain’s loudest bird with a low pitch ‘booming’ noise, is the Bittern. Here a pair of elusive and secretive Bitterns can be discovered hidden amongst the reedbeds, searching out fish and invertebrates whilst Bearded Tits flit from reed to reed balancing like comical acrobats.

Sir Winston Churchill’s relationship with Pol Roger Champagne dates back to 1945 when, during a luncheon, Churchill met Odette Pol-Roger. A friendship began which, indulged by his wife Clementine, lasted until his death in 1965. Each year on his birthday, Odette would send Churchill a case of vintage champagne. Upon his death, Pol Roger put black-bordered labels on all of their bottles destined for the UK and in 1975, Pol Roger named their prestige cuvée after him.
