VICTORY IN EUROPE MAY 8TH 1945 - 2025
March 2025
Over the last few days we have seen the very welcome signs of spring. The days are lengthening, the sun is just that bit stronger and the garden is starting to come to life. Every year I think it seems to have been a long winter but this year, despite the relative lack of snow in most parts of the country, it has certainly been a very wet winter, as our gardens are showing. The first spring lambs are gamboling around the fields of Staffordshire, which certainly makes the drive home, in the daylight, that little bit more uplifting.
With the new season comes lots of wonderful introductions from our favourite suppliers, and we are delighted to be adding some new ranges too. I am sure that Poole is a name known to many of you, but it is one that Goviers has not sold for a few years. The creative use of glazes has always been a skill that Poole have used to great effect and the new ranges show this off. The range is now made exclusively at the historic Burleigh factory in Longport, Stoke on Trent, familiar no doubt to anyone who watches the Great Pottery Throw Down! The eagle eyed amongst you might have seen a Noah’s Ark and animals on the programme a few weeks ago; a range you will have seen in our catalogue before, but we are not allowed to mention the name in association with the programme.
It certainly doesn’t seem 5 years since we commemorated the 75th Anniversary of VE Day but this year marks 80 years since the end of the second World War. With the current tensions in the world, it seems even more important that we remember the sacrifices made by so many to protect our freedom, and that of so many other countries in Europe. We must not forget the horrors of war and let unjustified acts of aggression go unchallenged. It was with this in mind, that we asked Caroline Dadd to design a fitting tribute to mark this important occasion in our country’s history. I really love this bold design which I think strikes just the right tone.
With Easter now just around the corner thoughts turn not just to chocolate; although I am looking forward to my dark chocolate Easter bunny with very thick chocolate ears! Janet has put together a lovely range of Easter pieces featuring delightful images of spring. The sight of crocus and daffodils in our garden has certainly lifted the mood and hinted that warmer days are ahead. For my late father Easter was the most important religious event in the calendar, and he insisted that it was also a major family event too. Turkey was certainly not just for Christmas in our house. I have one ready in the freezer which I hope we will get to share with Harriett. Yes, she finds her way in somewhere this month! Now crawling, standing and with her first tooth she is certainly keeping Oliver & Hannah, and Janet & I on our toes!
It was with great disappointment that we were told by Halcyon Days that they have, for reasons of their own, decided that they will no longer be supplying us. As one of their last remaining independent retailers who have supported them for many years, this was a massive shock. We are sorry that our loyal Halcyon Days customers will no longer be able to purchase their items from Goviers. Any orders already placed with us will be honoured they have assured us. Our decision to start selling pre-loved Halcyon Days boxes turns out to be timely.
We have already got a wish list from customers seeking specific Halcyon Days boxes that they have missing from their collection. If you are interested in selling all or part of your collection, please do contact us. Demand for older Royal Crown Derby paperweights still seems to be as high as ever and again we have a very active wish list and in the past few months we have managed to find many of the pieces that our customers are waiting for. Let us know if there are pieces that you would like us to reserve for you, when we find them, there is no obligation to purchase.
In early February Janet, Grace, Alison and I spent a busy few days at the Ambiente trade show in Frankfurt. The size of this show is mind blowing and the walking required to get round it is very challenging for some of us! We found some exciting new ranges, mostly for our Havens website but there are a few new ranges that we will be adding to Goviers too. The variety of products available is incredible and selecting new companies to work with is never easy. There will be new ranges of cutlery, glassware and tableware being added to Havens, some are already on our site. Do look at www.havens.co.uk if you need cookware or tableware for yourself or as a gift. We try to stock things that are different and not everywhere.
Thank you for taking the time to look through our latest catalogue. It is a huge team effort, lead by Janet, to put it together each month. We do appreciate your support and never take it for granted.

Snowdrops have a very deep meaning behind them. As one of the first flowers of spring, they often symbolise new beginnings, hope, rebirth and the ability to overcome challenges. With Pope Francis making 2025 a year of hope, this bowl, holding an unbroken ring of snowdrops, would make a very positive gift to give someone who might be going through a change and in need of a smile.

The Spring Cannon mirror inspired from a conversation with a collector at a Moorcroft event at Cannon Hall, uses daffodils which rise like trumpets in an orchestra, dashing their golden brass over nodding snowdrops and aconites as dwarf irises raise the tempo in the central side plaques with a tantalising twist of lilac petals, each one holding a single orange-yellow stripe, just as if they were moving conductor batons.
Inge Dawn Vase

Galanthus nivalis ‘Blonde Inge’ is an interesting nivalis cultivar with its combination of green and honey-yellow parts. Rachel uses a warm buttery ground behind her snowdrops with vibrant green foliage, as she weaves warm, honey-blond open blooms over nodding closed ones.
