Simon’s ramblings!

After almost 12 months I am finally able to compose my ramblings while sat in my favourite corner of France.

It has been such a busy and tiring 12 months that we were glad of the opportunity for a little escape to recharge and refresh.

You will notice that the catalogue has grown. With so much to say about some of our new items the size of the copy was getting rather small so the new format gives us the chance to show some things a bit bigger and make sure that we can all read the copy. Do let us know what you think, good or bad!

The plans for Platinum Jubilee events are well underway and most of the Royal Family seem to be ready and excited to support H.M. The Queen during a milestone year. We have already launched some ranges to celebrate this historic event but this month we are delighted to be able to reveal some really exciting additions.

Caroline Dadd has once again excelled herself with our first exclusive Goviers Wooden Jigsaw Puzzle, made in the UK. The design captures so many parts of her Majesty’s life; we know that she loves a jigsaw so we hope one might find its way to Windsor Castle. Given our love of all things cake we asked Janet, not my wife but our invaluable warehouse assistant whose cakes are legendary, to make the Queen’s favourite afternoon cake, search it out in the puzzle! Isabella has sampled the cake today and says it is delicious! Thank you Janet!!

As part of our commemorative range, we are really excited to be presenting our first Moorcroft exclusive. Just 7 pieces of each of the vase and plaque will be made and with the worldwide demand for Moorcroft we expect this edition to be in strong demand.

Rachel Bishop has created the most stunning design depicting trees and woodlands, areas that will play such a big part in the celebrations next year. In addition, we have other new collections from Moorcroft, the creativity in that company is truly world class!

Halcyon Days have been working on their new commemorative range for some months and we are delighted to have a preview of this for you to pre-order. The designs are, as ever with Halcyon Days, full of detail and entirely suitable for such a special event.

We expect the limited editions to sell out very quickly.

With the focus at Royal Crown Derby having moved away from Paperweights these days we are especially delighted to launching the new Imari Hare.

Delivery is starting in October but we have very few allocated for us this year so early ordering is recommended. As many of you will know Hugh Gibson was instrumental in steering Royal Crown Derby for many years and I was lucky enough to work with him for over 20 years. He has written a short history of the Imari patterns and RCD’s surprising part in their history.

The reaction to the selection of Pre-Loved Royal Crown Derby in the last catalogue was overwhelming. We have some more pieces this time and will try to continue this offering in future. If you are waiting for prices on your collection from me, I do apologise for the delay, I am working my way through them now.

As we get older I think we tend to hark back to happy memories from our childhood more and more.

The Wombles were a big part of my childhood memories, especially my somewhat feeble attempts to play their many songs on the piano, much to the frustration of my mother! You will not believe the excitement when I found out that Steiff were launching Orinoco. My favourite!

When my brother and I we were youngsters, we were lucky enough to receive toys from America where my late father’s sister, Elisabeth, lived. These were always things not available in the UK and were always a little different, and many survive to this day! When I saw the Fablewood range it had some of the same feel as things I remember from my early days. Amanda’s daughter Isabella has loved testing them and we hope that you will like them as much as we do. Their green credentials are impeccable too.

Since Janet has created a separate Goviers at Christmas brochure this time the At Home section is included here for a change. Most of the team or their other halves are keen cooks so we are always on the lookout for new ranges to offer. Samuel Groves from Birmingham have just launched a new cast iron range, Britannia, and like all their cookware it is hand made in the heart of Birmingham. We know how good the stainless-steel pans are so are excited to try this range when it arrives.

I am always keeping an eye out for brands not available everywhere but that offer top quality performance.

After years of breaking salt and pepper mills, I discovered Peugeot and realised that all mills are not made equal!

I suppose that you would expect the French to take all things culinary rather seriously and these mills are certainly testament to that. We bought our son a set for Christmas and he loves them and has added a large one for kitchen use to his collection. Not the cheapest I will admit but Goviers has always been about quality and craftsmanship and we think these certainly keep to that ethos.

ORDER EARLY FOR CHRISTMAS I know that we are only just in September but with all the chaos in the world even UK produced ranges are in short supply and lead times are very extended. We have ordered as far in advance as we have been able to but it is unlikely that with many brands we will have the opportunity to secure further supplies this year.

We would urge you to place your orders as soon as possible even on lines that we say will not be available until October or November.

As the days shorten and the colours change we hope that you find something in here to tempt you and that you like the new format.

A SECOND CALLING COLLECTION NUMBERED

These five pieces form part of a special collection celebrating Maureen & Hugh Edwards’ 35 Years at Moorcroft. Founder, William Moorcroft, first started creating fine art pottery in 1897. However, by 1986, England’s once great art pottery had dwindled to a handful of employees who had not worked on a new design for more than ten years. Moorcroft’s proud tradition might have succumbed to the fate of contemporaries had William’s youngest son, Managing Director, John Moorcroft, not been put in contact with Hugh Edwards to save his heritage and rebuild the world-famous name that is Moorcroft today. In this collection, Moorcroft look back and celebrate the impact Hugh and his wife Maureen have had on the company.

Cotswold sheep are a sight to behold in the rolling green fields of the British countryside. Maureen, or as Hugh will affectionately call her, Mo, has a soft spot for these story-book sheep. Not only has she bred, raised and farmed her own flock of sheep at home in Thaxted, but she has also been a shepherdess in a metaphorical sense for the workforce of Moorcroft. Colleagues at Moorcroft all feel the caring presence of Maureen whenever she is at The Works and her watchful eye keeps everyone safe, with a sense of ‘togetherness.’

Stepping right back to where it all began for Maureen and Hugh as children in Worcestershire, designer, Nicola dug deep to reveal the quintessential cottage that Hugh grew up in. Next to the cottage sits a wooden chicken coop whilst heavily-laden fruit trees frame the red brick home. The tranquillity of this dwelling is evident through the design - a peaceful cottage reaping the rewards of the nearby River Avon and surrounding tributaries, wetlands, woods and meadows. Worcestershire will always hold a special place in Maureen and Hugh’s heart and this piece represents fond and happy memories for both of them.

Saffron Walden is a market town in the Uttlesford district of Essex, not far from Maureen and Hugh’s current home. In the 16th and 17th centuries the saffron crocus (Crocus sativus) was widely grown, thanks to the town's favourable soil and climate. The stigmas of the flower were used in medicines, as a condiment, in perfume, as an expensive yellow dye, and as an aphrodisiac. The industry gave Walden its present name.

In 2003, Emma Bossons created the popular design Saffron Crocus. The whole of its proceeds flowed into nearby Thaxted Church funds, enabling repair and renovation work to continue.

Over the years, Moorcroft has gelled with the community of Thaxted thanks to the efforts of the Edwards family. Today, Nicola Slaney picks up the saffron idea to symbolise this unique relationship. Saffron Gold is a simple but effective design.

Purple petals intwine with golden stigmas. Hugh and Maureen have been worth their weight in gold in their community, much like the 70,000 saffron plants that are needed to make 1 pound of saffron!

Vicky's original design, Ophelia's Flowers, in 2010, was a result of Vicky’s desire to bring the flowers from 'Hamlet' into a work of art. Ophelia did not choose the flowers randomly and neither did Vicky; daisies (representing innocence) are woven in amongst violets (faithfulness and lost youth), poppies (sleep) and wild pansies. The original design is reincarnated here in vibrant colours of orange, buttercup, lilac and dusty-rose. The shape, 72/12, was the original shape she presented her first trial to the design board on, when Hugh suggested that she should develop her Shakespearean designs into a full range. ‘Now you’re a designer’ he said to her. Hugh saw something in Vicky’s design and her ability, which meant a lot to Vicky and still resonate with her today.

The nickname for a wigeon is ‘a dabbler’ because of its habit of running its short beak across the surface of its watery home in search of floating food. Noted especially for its attractive colours, the male wigeon is grey, with a pink breast, orange head, yellow forehead and noticeable white wing patches whilst the females have a rusty brown plumage and a pointed tail.

Designer Vicky Lovatt’s orange tip butterflies are found hovering on Cardamine pratensis. This herbaceous plant is a perennial, with delicate flowers with yellow centres, found blooming throughout the British Isles from April to June.

Commonly known as cuckoo flower, lady’s smock, mayflower, or milkmaids, the word pratensis is Latin for meadow and orange tip butterflies thrive on it.

The bittern is a rare, shy bird which moves silently among the reeds which are its home.

Feathered in shades of brown to camouflage all members of the small family of heron-like birds, they make their silent path through the rushes that litter the surface of the water.

Designer Emma Bossons’s bitterns are portrayed with each bird adopting a different posture as they effortlessly weave their way through the reeds.

The bearded tit is one of the UK’s rarest breeding birds. At RSPB Leighton Moss they have around 25 pairs of bearded tits that can be seen all year round. Named after their similarities with longtailed tits and the dark facial markings on the males that resemble a moustache, bearded tits make their homes on well-managed reed beds.

LM At RSPB Leighton Moss, a succession of marsh flowers including woody nightshade bloom along the reserve tracks. The plant is a perennial vine with flowers in star-shaped loose clusters, with five purple petals and yellow stamens. With a deftness of touch and colour, Nicola has placed her flowers above an assortment of woody nightshade berries and leaves.

Much loved throughout the UK, oystercatchers are versatile, noisy if disturbed and very clear about what they prefer to eat. It is not true to assert that oystercatchers live on oysters. The birds acquired their name in 1731 when a man called Mark Catesby saw a bird crack open an oyster and eat it. From that moment, the birds became oystercatchers and the name has stayed with them ever since. Vicky was inspired by the sheer beauty of the shoreline stretching out to Morecombe Bay, with its backcloth of green hills that roll gently down to golden sands, where salt water laps almost silently.

It was a place full of lugworms, rock beetles, mussels, limpets and a plentiful supply of all that is good in the diet of hungry oystercatchers.

The story of Imari by Hon. Hugh Gibson

Royal Crown Derby is famous for its “Imari” patterns, so called because they were inspired by the designs on Japanese wares exported to Europe in large quantities by the Dutch East India Company, during the 17th and 18th centuries. Imari is the nearest sea-port to the great porcelain area of Arita, on the South Island of Japan, through which these goods flowed, so they took on the name.

During my visit, I found myself seated in Imaimon’s meeting room opposite the great man himself. He was much revered as a potter, and officially classified as a “National Treasure” of Japan. I asked him if he knew of Royal Crown Derby.

“Of course” he said, and reached down to take a cup and saucer from a cupboard. It was in one of our patterns, Old Imari, factory pattern number 2451. I turned it over and was astonished to find there, not my backstamp, but his. “How was this?” I asked.

He told me that at the end of the Second World War, Japan was devastated and under the administration of General McArthur. He had recently joined his father in the business. However there were no orders, no work, and it looked as though the ancient company would not survive. General McArthur, hearing of their problems, lent them some pieces from a Crown Derby service he had at home, and ordered from Imaimon a huge new service in the same design. The manufacture took many months, during which trade revived, the company was able to carry on, and prospers to this day. So Imaimon 13th ascribed the survival of his ancient form to General McArthur and Royal Crown Derby.

I pondered on this extraordinary circle, in which a style of design, which came originally from mainland China, moved to Japan, was copied by us in Europe, and was now copied back again by the Japanese.

uring my 20 years working at Royal Crown Derby we developed some fabulous pieces, worked with some wonderful retailers and made some lasting memories. One of the paperweights that will forever stick in my mind is the Spirit of Peace. Not the easiest model to create or decorate but like many challenging pieces the end result was worth the time and effort that June and the factory put into it.
