Welcome to our September 2020 catalogue.

Almost exactly 12 months ago I was sitting at the same table as I am now writing my small contribution to the September catalogue. Back then the world was a very different, and somewhat more carefree place, than it is today. The challenges for all of us remain and for those of us running a business we have to find new ways to work and try to offer the best service that we can in rather unusual circumstances. I know that there have been some delays to deliveries and in particular on the Wordsworth Bunny, for which we can only apologise. The first batch sold out quickly and then the supplier of the mohair fabric was closed for an extended period. Hopefully by the time you read this further supplies will finally be on the way to us.

Our last catalogue saw the start of Christmas at Goviers. It may seem odd to be showing Christmas in July but so many of our suppliers only give us one opportunity to order their Christmas ranges so if we do not offer them early we would miss the chance to have them at all. The Royal Copenhagen range has proved very popular again this year. Although demand has been very high we do still have stock available but it will not last until Christmas and we are unlikely to be able to get any more. The same goes for the Wedgwood and Belleek ranges so we advise ordering early to avoid disappointment.

As well as the more established brands we are delighted to have found Dregeno while at the Ambiente trade show in Frankfurt in February. This company offers a superb range of hand-crafted pieces from a wide range of skilled artisan makers. We have a small selection to share with you this time but there are more to follow. We think these items offer something a little bit different to grace your homes this year, and for years to come.

Away from Christmas it is hard to believe that Rupert is 100 this year! He’s certainly aging well! A character that has lived large in the childhoods of many generations, I still remember looking at my mother’s Rupert annuals as a child!

Steiff and Halcyon Days have both chosen to mark this remarkable birthday with some delightful pieces. Now I have written that I am not sure I will get the Rupert song out of my head until bedtime!

While on the subject of birthdays this year saw the 70th birthday of The Princess Royal, one of the most hard working, and straight forward, members of the Royal Family. Halcyon Days did not want this milestone to go unrecorded and have a beautiful limited edition box available. Only 25 are available so early ordering is recommended. I was lucky enough to meet her when she visited Royal Crown Derby and I unexpectedly found myself presenting her with two special gifts to mark her visit. I was only expecting to pass them to Hugh Gibson for him to present them but not everything went to plan!

Despite the mix up she was charming.

In our last catalogue we shared with you a few of the cats owned by the Goviers team. So that they were not left out, and for no other reason, we wanted to let the dogs have their five minutes of fame!

With Amanda there is Eddie, with Karen there are Fizz and Raffi, and with Hannah’s family the dear, but recently departed, Smokie and the bundle of energy that is new puppy Sven! Well a cross between a Collie and Spaniel was always going to mean trouble!

The passing of Dame Vera Lynn made the headlines around the world and rekindled memories of somewhat different times. A wonderful example of positivity to us all and her songs are just as relevant now as all those years ago. We wanted to commemorate her life in a small way and we hope our collection of Royal Scot Crystal, designed

by Caroline, hits the right note. I am sure Dame Vera would have been so pleased to be back at No 1 with Land of Hope and Glory!

The last few months have been very difficult for many small manufacturers in the UK and we have been doing our best to support as many of our UK suppliers as possible. As many of you know

Royal Crown Derby has been a part of my life for

many years and despite changes to their focus of

late there are still some lovely pieces coming out of their Derby factory.

The Nightingale Owl is one of the latest introductions and has a personal connection for us. Although not born in Derbyshire Florence kept a house near Matlock for many years and it was while there in 1840 that she came to stay at Heybridge, close to our offices and the inspiration for the name of the road.

You will notice that there is an additional small catalogue in your envelope this month, “Goviers at Home”. During lockdown there has been a great increase in home cooking and a rediscovery for many of the pleasure and sense of achievement in making something from scratch, rather than opening a packet. Cooking, and unfortunately eating, has been a long-standing hobby of mine and Janet has become very understanding of the mess in the kitchen from my many experiments; some successful and on-going like home-made sausages, some less so and consigned to history like my attempts at smoked salmon!

It was with this in mind that we wanted to try and gather together a collection of items more focussed on the home but felt that they should not dilute the focus of the usual catalogue, hence “Goviers at Home”. I will admit that many of the choices are born from personal experience of the products, not many meals would be prepared here without a Mermaid tin being used at some point!

We hope that what we have put together will give you some ideas for presents for the cooks in your family, as well as perhaps a little treat for yourselves and your homes.

As we all adapt to the “new normal”, whatever that will eventually be, we hope that the Goviers catalogue will provide a little escape into a world of beautiful things. We all enjoy putting together the selection each time, although most of the work is done by Janet I do offer my opinion when required, and sometimes even when not required! Any feedback you have is always welcome and we look forward to talking to you over the next few weeks.

ELIZABETH WELCH • GLASS SCULPTURES Elizabeth creates highly detailed borosilicate glass sculptures of animals particularly bird, insect and marine life. Each piece is made entirely by hand using coloured borosilicate glass rods which are melted in a high oxygen and propane flame. Each piece is annealed in an electrically controlled kiln for lasting strength and durability. By building layers of opaque and transparent glasses she has developed her own recognisable style of flame worked glass.

Green Tear, a superb and amazingly expensive new discovery, is one of the most strongly virescent and best 'green' snowdrops known. The outer petals are broad and are marked with vertical green strands, whilst the inner segments are almost an emerald green except for a slender white border near the apex

The 'Mrs MacNamara' snowdrop puts on a fine show early in the New Year.

It's a tall upright plant with well developed narrow glaucous foliage at flowering time. Slender flowers are held well clear of the foliage and a small 'V' marking can be found on the inner segment. The plant originated from Dylan Thomas' mother in law Mrs MacNamara. Alongside these dainty snowdrops Nicola's design features alpine squill - the star shaped blue flowers which leap and dance towards the top of the design, speckled with buds and stamen.
