As summer draws to a close, it warms up…..

Janet and I are coming to the end of our time in France, and I am sat at the kitchen table with the shutters closed and the fan on as it is a very humid 34 degrees outside. I find writing my small contribution, always at the very last minute before the catalogue goes off to the printer, as a great time to just sit and marvel at the wonderful products we work with and you our much-appreciated customers, as well as life in general and today my thoughts very much turn to the events of 12 months ago and the death of H.M. Queen Elizabeth ll.

Reading the press reports today and the memories of twelve months ago it is incredible how proud one feels at the teamwork and dedication that our servicemen and women showed in readying themselves to give our late Queen the send-off she deserved and most certainly had earned. I don’t think any of us can be other than immensely proud of the way in which the whole country rallied together. A truly British send off for a truly wonderful Monarch, mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother.

With a Coronation as well as a State Funeral there was plenty to watch and be proud of over the past year. We hope that the ranges that we had designed for us, and those that we chose to feature, captured the right tone for both these occasions.

Being based in Staffordshire and close to the heart of The Potteries we love nothing more than to support and promote the fine products made on our doorstep. Moorcroft is a stunning example of a heritage craft being maintained and enjoyed the world over. The skills of the team there are second to none and we are delighted to feature an extensive selection of new pieces from this iconic brand.

We were very lucky to be able to visit Canterbury Bears earlier in the summer and see the wonderful work that they do there. A true family company with a passion for their work and a degree of care given to each piece that you only see where they truly love what they do. Janet and Kerstin talked away about new ideas while Maude and I enjoyed a cup of tea and I learnt all about the history of the business. I won’t reveal Maude’s age but it is safe to say she is working well past the normal retirement age! The new set of Bears of “The Wales’s” were the result of that visit and we are delighted to be showing them for the very first time in this edition. A well researched and beautifully crafted collection, just as you would expect from the hand of the charming Maude.

I have often said that being someone with a birthday in mid-December I always used to fight hard against Christmas arriving in the Willis house before I had marked off another year. Unfortunately, the advent of Goviers, no pun intended, has meant that we must start talking Christmas in February, in fact I am not sure that we ever stop talking Christmas! Yet more Christmas decorations were added to our offering only yesterday while visiting Maison et Objet, a huge trade exhibition which takes place just north of Paris. This catalogue contains our new range of baubles, designed by Caroline Dadd, which I must admit could well be allowed up before my birthday! They are such great designs and the detail and thought that Caroline has put into them is amazing.

Being something of a foodie, OK that is something of an understatement I hear our team crying, I always enjoy cooking and more particularly seeing people enjoy food; whether or not I have cooked it. I am very lucky that almost 40 years after starting at Denby tableware I still get to work with, and heartily enjoy, fine tableware and glassware. Noritake tableware always featured in our family as my late father used to spend a good amount of his latter years working not far from the Japanese base of this well-known brand. Today I have been able to combine my love of food, and French food in particular, with my love of tableware and cooking. We all felt that the range of photographs available for the Noritake tableware we wanted to feature was not quite what we needed so I said I would have a go at dressing a plate and Janet would get out her iPhone! I am not sure we would win many prizes, and we will have another go sometime with the proper lights and camera, but I hope you will focus on the plates and see how much better even the simplest of ingredients looks on a piece of beautiful tableware. I have to say my plum sauce was very good and note the “chefie smear”! A quote from James Martin!

We hope that we are almost at the end of the supply issues that we have been experiencing for the last 6 months or so. Although many of our suppliers remain busy our back orders are finally being cleared now. We do appreciate your patience and we fully understand that we have tried it at times. Everyone is trying to plan further ahead, and we hope that the events that triggered much of these issues exactly a year ago will not occur again for some time.

2023 New Introduction to the Royal Crown Derby Paperweight Collection

To mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of Jane Austen’s older sister, Cassandra, Jane’s House planted an orchard in her name. Here Emma's vase, Austen’s Orchard, has plump plums, and matt-ochre coloured Ribston Pipin apples dangling temptingly from branches as ghostly gooseberry’s peek through the thicket over rings of kitchen garden strawberries, arching one over another in a decadent tumble of cadmium reds.

In 2018, a wallpaper fragment, identified by a tax mark, and produced around 1809, was discovered in the Dining Room of Jane Austen’s home in Chawton. Emma's inspiration for her Chawton Rose plaque and vase, was the reproduction block-printed paper, known as Chawton Leaf. Here blush-pink roses are woven amongst the exciting find of the nettle-green leaves.

Jane Austen’s friend Martha Lloyd lived with Jane, Cassandra and Mrs Austen for many years. Martha’s manuscript contains not only recipes for food but also recipes for useful household items such as the receipt for ink. Iron Gall ink is one of the oldest forms of ink known to man. The galls of the oak tree contain gallotanic acid when crushed, then mixed with water, it creates an ink. Jane Austen’s surviving manuscripts were written in a variety of this home-made iron gall ink and Moorcroft wanted to pay homage to the writer by creating a design on both an inkwell but also on a candlestick.

In Pemberley, there are two of the most famous characters ever created by author Jane Austen, Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy. At the base is a veritable feast of fruit and blossom, with an absolutely classic Moorcroft tree, under which the couple stand together.

The great house, Pemberley, home to the Darcy family for centuries, stands silently in the background, playing its own pivotal role in both Austen’s novel and Nicola’s design.

Jane Austen made Bath her home, from 1801 to 1806. The Royal Crescent (built 1767 -1774), is a row of 30 terraced Georgian houses laid out in a sweeping crescent in the city of Bath, Designed by the architect John Wood, the Younger. Paul Hilditch cleverly wraps the Crescent around the vase, into the heart of Austen’s era.

Dramatically, Paul combines a detailed architectural vision with a high society gathering to view one of the regions famous air balloon extravaganzas – he even lands a balloon on the well-groomed grass. With Hobson-style horse drawn carts, popular Regency dog breeds, and a multitude of waist-coated gentlemen in tight pantaloons and top hats; ladies in ribboned bonnets with high Empire waistlines, straight ankle-length dresses, with some, unsupported by petticoats, and shockingly short sleeves on their gloved arms – the tittering of a Regency gathering can almost be heard.

September sees the hedgerow laden with a wide variety of fruit. Small mammals such as bank voles, common shrews, hazel dormice and hedgehogs scuttle around putting aside food for the winter months. Meanwhile, hungry wood mice, who cannot wait to eat, feed themselves on the fallen fruit before they start their long winter sleep.

RSPB Rainham Marshes Collection

Just beyond the Thames Barrier in East London, RSPB Rainham Marshes, once a Ministry of Defence firing range, now explodes with wildlife which thrives on the ancient grazing mashes of the Thames Estuary. Its mix of shallow lagoons, scrub, lowland grazing marsh dissected by ditches, reedbed and woodland provides habitat for a wide range of birds and scarce wetland plants and insects. It is a wetland world of mists and mud flats of some 870 astounding acres.

RSPB Rainham Marshes is committed to saving the rarest bumblebee in England and Wales, the Shrill Carder bee, now nesting in its tussocky grassland. This design on a round lidded box, provides a rare aerial view of the Shrill Carder bee, with wings open and nipped back, as they feast on the mustard-yellow claws of bird’s-foot trefoil, showcasing their pale grey-yellow colouring, black band of hair between their wings and unusual reddish-orange tail.

RSPB Rainham Marshes have worked hard to create the highest density of voles in the United Kingdom by protecting the habitats that Water Voles rely on. Along the water’s edge, dense green swathes of reeds sway in the summer breeze. Above their rustle and hiss, Curlews sing as damselflies and butterflies provide colour over the mud and sand. Here Kerry's curious little Water Vole clutches the reeds with twitching whiskers.

With the vast Dartford bridge in the background, the pensively still Grey Heron with its stilt like legs, takes centre stage in his wetland home on this magnificent vase, whilst over the reeds a flying Grey Heron beats its outstretched wings. This sparse, reed-clustered landscape "intersected with dykes and mounds and gates, with scattered cattle feeding on it" inspired Charles Dickens to write Great Expectations, with Abel Magwitch as one of its major fictional characters.

From the Shooting Butts Hide on RSPB Rainham Marshes, an abundance of Lapwings, known as Peewits, can be seen in wavering flight. In this design, Lapwings, with their unusual roundshaped wings, tinged with petrol green, and trademark white-tips, tumble above, and wade around on the mudflats and salt marshes below as reeds cluster like bamboo panpipes.

RSPB Rainham Marshes hosts Brimstone butterflies, known for their large greyish-green body and veiny, pointed wings. Here these butterflies are transformed into ethereal angels with a minuscule hint of yellow-green, as they dart up towards seeded reeds. Below, male Ruddy Darter dragonflies, whose blood-red, club-shaped abdomens are almost hidden by their soft, blossom-pink and white wings, flank an extremely rare, migrant Lesser Emperor dragonfly, recently found colonising at Rainham Marshes. The Lesser Emperor dragonfly holds wings out at right angles to its body, as its abdomen with black lines running up the centre, act as markers, to the most beautiful cornflower-blue colouration near the top.

King Charles III has for many years been known to have a personal favourite flower – the delphinium. He is recorded as saying “I have an absolute passion for delphiniums –and I’ve always had it”. Designer, Nicola Slaney, encapsulates his passion in this elegant Goviers exclusive jug featuring a bouquet of delphiniums with some in shades of pure white, and others a soft blue, mauve mix – colours recognised to symbolise youth and renewal.

With rich satin lining, the cape features festive bells neatly embroidered across the front in gold thread, along with a golden bell at the end of each ribbon tail. Their left paw is embroidered with a co-ordinating,full-colour festive bell design, delicately entwined with the iconic Merrythought wishbone.
