An Autumnal Ramble It seems that we are often in France when Janet says that the catalogue is ready to go to the printer and she needs my contribution, or ramblings as I like to call them. Inspiration does not always strike just like that!

The last time I sat at the kitchen table it was 34 degrees outside and the summer showed no signs of letting up. Just eight weeks later the temperature has dropped about 20 degrees and Storm Ciaran is scattering the leaves around the garden. Why is it that as soon as the clocks go back it seems to be dark about two hours earlier not just one? Thankfully the fire is burning and it’s warm inside.

The shortening days are a clear sign that Christmas is not far away. I am constantly reading that the big stores have their TV adverts ready to run and the party food is already in our favourite stores. At Goviers planning for the festive season starts in February as many suppliers unveil their Christmas ranges. It continues almost without a pause until the November catalogue goes off to the printer. This year Janet and the team have found a bumper collection of superb pieces, many from existing suppliers but many from new makers we have found.

I think that Moorcroft and Belleek have excelled themselves this year as have Goebel, Wedgwood, Waterford and my favourite Georg Jensen.

You will notice that we have a new supplier of leather-bound notebooks and diaries, all made in England. We always like to test new ranges before we launch them, I have my note book at my side and it is performing very well. Janet’s mother gave her approval to the diary too!

Great gifts and well as something to treat yourself to. Despite the computer age I am never without my trusty notebook and pen.

Christmas is a wonderful opportunity to get together with family and friends and enjoy indulging in special food and drink. Whether you are a keen cook like me or prefer to raid M&S for some tasty delights they will all look better on beautiful plates and served in stylish glassware. We hope that adding a little Noritake porcelain and Chef & Sommelier glassware to whatever you serve this Christmas it will make it just that little more of an occasion. We have used the glassware ourselves for almost 15 years and can vouch for the quality and the positive comments we have had about them. This year I will be sitting on my hands as our son and his wife cook Christmas dinner, their first Christmas as a married couple. Janet says I won’t be able to resist interfering, and she is probably right!

I will probably be put in the corner with a glass of fizz and their dog Poco or cats Pingu & Chaplin as we are all fed treats to keep us quiet. If they get mixed up and I end up with a cat treat it will not be the first time!!

It seems that autumn is the time that many of us get out the puzzles and get the grey cells working away. Janet and our daughter in law Hannah are always chief testers of any new puzzle we develop, and they have had a bumper year of puzzling.

Our latest, Very Puzzling Bears, was a big hit and not too easy, they both like a challenge. All our puzzles are made in the UK and are wooden not cardboard.

In 2019 when we acquired Goviers of Sidmouth little did we know where it would lead us. This time last year we were still working from home, well I say home it was more like a warehouse with a kitchen/dining/sitting area! Now we have moved into a new warehouse and office; and we have our lounge and garage back and most of our bedrooms. Just as we were starting to get straight an opportunity came up to acquire another iconic business operating in a similar way to Goviers, and with a similar history and seaside birthplace.

Havens of Westcliff was founded in 1901 and has been in the ownership of the same family until this month when we purchased the business. Although for many years Havens had been a department store in latter years it has been online only specialising in tableware, glassware and cutlery. I have known Nigel Havens for over 20 years and was honoured that he was happy to entrust his family business to Janet and I and our fantastic team. We are excited at the challenge and having started at Denby tableware in 1985 I am delighted to be back as a customer almost 40 years later. Do have a look at the new Havens website at www.havens.co.uk, it is still being expanded but the team have done a superb job of getting an entirely new website up and running in under three weeks. I am in awe. We look forward to welcoming the many loyal Havens customers to the Goviers family, and hopefully some of our Goviers customers will enjoy browsing the Havens website.

Since this is probably the last catalogue before Christmas even though it is rather early can I wish you all a very happy Christmas and thank you for your support of our small family business in 2023.

The Sweetest Corn offers a sumptuous unravelling of colour and form as husks are pulled away to reveal buttery-yellow ears of corn in neat rows of kernels. Kerry’s soft green leaves curl under the rim of the vase against a crisp wash of blue and green.
