Simon’s ramblings! Once again the catalogue is almost put together and it is time for me to pen my “chat” or ramblings as I like to think of them! In March we were looking forward to the arrival of spring and the start of greater freedom for all of us. Now we are in May we can see the garden growing and the world, at least in the UK, returning to something closer to normal. Many of us have had at least one vaccination and I for one feel a lot more relaxed about shopping than I did before I knew I had some protection. The light at the end of that very long tunnel is suddenly starting to look a lot brighter. I know for many the last year has been very tough and for those that have lost loved ones it has been heart breaking, but as is often the case it has bought out the best in many and made us appreciate the things that really matter. Family, in the widest sense, has become so much more important as we all try to support those who had to shield while trying to get on with our lives too. Never has the phone been such a lifeline, and as much as many of us hate the zoom or video call for many it has been the only chance they have had to see their families for many months. We all, young and old, appreciate that out of the blue call to see how we are and chat about what little we have done and who we haven’t seen! Being a small business, and most of us having known each other for many years, the Goviers family has been such a big part of the past year. With us all working at home, and working long hours, that sense of family has kept us all going, and chatting as we do, to so many of our customers has been a pleasure too. Thank you. We like to introduce to the extended Goviers family and we now have a new member, Poco. Our son Oliver and his partner Hannah have adopted a rescue dog and he is slowly adapting to his new life in a loving home in Derbyshire. The other member of the “team” who is putting in her first appearance is Lola, Steffi’s beautiful horse. We are waiting for the time when we can cheer them on as they go after another rosette, while enjoying an ice cream of course!
Still on the subject of family I think we all felt for our dear Queen when we heard the announcement that the Duke of Edinburgh had passed away. Even at the grand old age of 99 it must be a shock to lose someone that has been there supporting her Majesty steadfastly and with no histrionics for so many years. Although we had planned to commemorate the Duke’s 100th birthday we decided that it would be fitting instead to celebrate his life, and so many of you seem to have agreed. Thank you for your support and patience as delivery on our ranges has been seriously affected by a number of issues outside our control but we are now in full production and shipments are leaving daily.
Something that we strongly believe in is that we have to sell ranges that we appreciate from suppliers that we respect. Having been in the industry since I was 21, yes a very long time, many of the people we work with, I have known for years. Where we find new suppliers, we like to, in normal times, get to know the people as well as the product. We like to make sure that, particularly with practical items, we have used them and reassured ourselves that they live up to the Goviers standards. You will start to see “Tried & Tested” appear alongside items like the Fiskars pruners, Revol and Mermaid cookware and other lines. Many of these brands we have been using ourselves for years and it is that which prompted us to offer them to you. I may even add a few of the teams cooking successes in due course!
TRIED & TESTED
Changes to Payments Due to new financial legislation being introduced this year, you may already have noticed changes to the security checks on payments made with your cards for purchases online and over the phone. The rules around taking card payments are changing and unfortunately that means that we are being forced to change the way we process payments. In future when you place your order and we expect to be able to despatch it within 30 days, we will now take payment at that point, rather than when we despatch the goods as we do now. Where we know that items have to be made to order, like with Herend and a number of other brands, we will take a deposit at the point of order and we will contact you to take the balance before shipment. This means that we have to make some big changes to our payment systems, but it is of paramount importance that your transaction will continue to be secure with us and we follow all the current legislation and business practices. Once again Janet has pulled together a huge range of new items, as well as us finding some highly collectable gems from Royal Crown Derby. A wonderful trip down memory lane for me. We hope there is something which makes you pick up the phone and speak to us. We are always delighted to chat and help as much as we can. Another little ramble is over, until next time….

Designed and created by Longman’s Florists under the leadership of Martin Longman, the Queen’s Coronation bouquet was a floral symbol for all four parts of the United Kingdom. England was represented by orchids and lilies of the valley while stephanotis symbolised Scotland. For Wales, there were more orchids grown in the principality while carnations were used to symbolise Northern Ireland with some of these blooms also chosen for the Isle of Man. Orchids were also personally significant to the new Queen who had carried a collection of these blooms in her wedding bouquet.

PEARLS, THE GEMSTONE OF THE OCEAN ... favoured by our own Royal Family and royalty throughout history. The oldest pearl has been dated to 5,500BC. The ancient Greeks believed Pearls brought marital bliss, the Romans saw Pearls as a status symbol. White Cultured Freshwater Pearls have been chosen for our collection, with a special lustre inspired by Moonlight on the Ocean. Due to the fact that pearls are natural there will be slight variances in the size of the pearls. Designed here in Staffordshire, we have taken care to include a magnetic clasp on the necklace and bracelet, fitting is so easy. Sterling Silver Fittings and chain have been used throughout. Our ‘Lantern’ style earring fitting intricately woven using traditional skills. The pearls for our collection have been selected and threaded by hand, in Birmingham’s Historic Jewellery Quarter, the home of the Jewellers crafts since 1750. The most coveted of these were tipped mohair. These beautiful bears had large welcoming pupils, a less pronounced snout and overall had a softer friendlier face. At the 2002 Steiff festival, a tipped teddy bear from 1926 sold for 156,240 Euros and still holds the world record as the most expensive auctioned teddy bear ever! Made of brown tipped mohair, original recreation by Steiff Schulte.
The 1920's were the most successful 'Dog years' not only in the toy industry lead by Steiff, but also in the fashion industry. Steiff produced dogs of every breed but their most successful was 'Molly' offered for the first time in 1925. She was a big hit and caused quite a sensation when she outsold the teddy bears! Her popularity encouraged Steiff to make a wide variety of designs including bags, hand warmers, purses, pyjama cases, hand puppets and wheeled toys. Molly was first made with tipped mohair and vibrant colours were later added, even in bright orange and of course this fabulous green.

Narcissus ‘Tête-à-tête’ is one of the most popular dwarf daffodil varieties available. Standing at only a few centimetres high, its small size makes it ideal for planting in patio containers or at the front of the border. The deep golden yellow flowers appear in early spring, with each stem bearing up to three blooms. In her design, Vicky sweetly places two blooms face to face as if they were serenading each other in an operatic duet, or quite literally a tête-à-tête, a quiet conversation. If you head North-West of Glasgow, you can travel by boat to the remote Hebridean Island of Eriskay. It was on this wild, bleak terrain that in 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie first landed in Scotland. Almost two centuries later, silver-grey ponies were seen heaving and pulling a heavy cargo of whisky barrels from the wrecked ship, SS Politician. From that incident, the story 'Whisky Galore' was born. Today, the Eriskay ponies are a critically endangered species, with only 400 left worldwide, but that is an improvement on the 1970's when the extinction bell was tolling. Vicky shows us Eriskay with all of its rocky grandeur although on the reverse we are treated to a beach and an altogether gentler landscape. Her Eriskay ponies graze on tough grass among the rocks, their manes swishing in a strong Hebridean wind.

In 1983, the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust acquired Iffley Meadow and today, the meadow boasts of more than 42,000 Snakeshead Fritillaries, and in April and May, they come into full bloom, their drooping, chequered heather-coloured flowers spread out like a heavenly carpet. Emma’s gloriously regal image does full justice to the sheer beauty of the Snakeshead Fritillary.

There are currently 24 species of bumblebee resident in Britain. Yet sadly, the story of the bumblebees over the past century has been one of decline. In Rachel's design we see the busy pollinating bumblebees amongst a myriad of fruit and flowers.
Britain’s meadows hum with life - from the first flowers of spring to misty autumn days when birds flock to berry-laden hedges. Whether it is a blaze of blue from harebells, the hum of bees buzzing from flower to flower, or the soft flutter of butterfly wings, Britain’s wildflower meadows are full of life. In this design, turquoise harebells with their heads bowed in reverence, are joined by cornflowers in shades of pale blue and lilac, and tiny yellow daisies, while a Meadow White butterfly finds a companion in a solo bee at the top of the vase and a tiny ladybird, tucked away among the meadow’s grasses near the base.
Kerry brings us a meadow medley of flowers in an array of soft, pastel colours. Under an arc of white bladder campion, its petals tinged with a pale pink dusting, flutters a Large White butterfly. Large white butterflies have white wings with broad black tips on the forewing and females also have two black spots and a black streak. The butterfly’s destination is the pretty purple polemonium, commonly known as Jacob’s Ladders, with detail on each petal sgraffitoed by hand into the raw clay. The third and final flower, is the ever-cheerful buttercup, whose golden heads gentle nod in the summer meadow breeze.

After hibernating, our sleepy hedgehog shuffles its way out of a nest of dry oak leaves, up through new, green grass and past a forest of golden daffodils. Only for a second does it pause to peer past a group of early spring fluttering butterflies and beyond into an orchard in blossom and a wildflower field full of the blooms of a new year. This is a tale of the changing seasons. The dry oak leaves represent the chill winds of a cold winter: fresh green grass and bright yellow daffodils stand up for spring. Pure white blossom is there to herald the fruits of autumn while the colourful butterflies provide an advertisement for the summer ahead. Helen Dale has given us an image of a whole year although our hedgehog may not even notice what nature is trying to tell it, as it trundles through a world all of its own.

As long ago as 1534, the words ‘Song Thrush’ eased their way gently into the English language. In gardens, its appetite for autumn fruit and berries made it friends with gardeners - a friendship consolidated by a seemingly insatiable appetite for earthworms and snails.

A seemingly solitary bird, the song thrush prefers to hop around thick hedges and native woodland, especially grazed pastures, and is seldom in the company of another song thrush even though they are said to mate for life. Not surprisingly, they are welcome everywhere even though numbers were falling to a point of serious concern as from 1970-1998 their numbers declined by 59%. Happily, on Kerry’s vase two birds can be found, perched amongst the branches, with one of them about to burst into song, thankful that their numbers are on the rise again. All the song thrush’s characteristics fade into insignificance when the thrushes open their throats to sing. The sound is enthralling with each pitch repeated five times. Small wonder that song thrushes are said to serenade and stir the countryside with their song. They are the soloists in any dawn chorus and a joy to all those fortunate enough to hear them.

ELIZABETH WELCH • GLASS SCULPTURES Elizabeth creates highly detailed borosilicate glass sculptures of animals particularly bird, insect and marine life. Each piece is made entirely by hand using coloured borosilicate glass rods which are melted in a high oxygen and propane flame. Each piece is annealed in an electrically controlled kiln for lasting strength and durability. By building layers of opaque and transparent glasses she has developed her own recognisable style of flame worked glass. Her work is highly collectable. Having a symbolic meaning of patience, friendliness, protection and contentment, the Old Imari Solid Gold Band Seahorse is designed in striking blue and red colours with lavish 22 carat gold decoration. To add intrigue, there is a hidden historical reference in the tail showing the number '11' on one side and '28' on the reverse. The original 1128 Old Imari pattern number is synonymous with Royal Crown Derby history, recorded in pattern book number 2, c.1882.
