A Ramble Down Memory Lane.

Writing is never something that has come easily for me, my school reports would certainly be testament to that, but with age and experience and I have come to appreciate the power and beauty of the written word.

I just wish that I had the skill and the imagination to make the most of it. Each time I sit down to write the last piece in the catalogue puzzle, my only real contribution to Janet and the team’s huge efforts pulling the pages together, I must wait for inspiration to strike. How to start? What to include? When to stop!

Yes, once I get going the ramble becomes a full-blown hike!!

This morning I am lucky enough to be looking out at the French sun and our neighbour’s sleeping cat, she has discovered that a pop-up café exists and is quick to notice when we are about. Cupboard love!

Looking through the catalogue has taken me on something of a trip down memory lane. I started my career in “the pots” in 1985, a slight detour from my plan to work in the motor industry, working at Denby Tableware in Derbyshire.

I think my time there set my path for the next 40 years, or so. After Denby I moved to Stoke on Trent and Royal Doulton where I spent many happy years before moving within the group to work with Hugh Gibson at Royal Crown Derby, which eventually become a separate business in 2000. Bear with me I will get to the point! In that period one product range I looked after was Character Jugs. A fascinating area of collecting all over the world. After a gap of almost 35 years, it was great to be able to launch our first exclusive character jug of H. M. Queen Elizabeth II earlier this year. That sold out quickly and work started on the follow up. I am excited to say that we have not one but two new additions this month, a superb double headed jug of H. M. The Queen to mark her 70 years on the throne and a cheeky Santa, yes despite my best-efforts Christmas has already arrived at Goviers!

I am sure both will sell out quickly, so work is already underway on the next models. Watch this space!

In 1994 I was lucky enough to start working with Hugh Gibson at Royal Crown Derby. It was there that I spent almost 20 years working with the most talented designers and crafts people and learning so much.

When we started looking at retailing pre-loved paperweights, I had to cast my mind back to remember all the models, and the stories. Many of the pieces in this catalogue were launched at events around the country which saw collectors travelling around England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. These events remain some of the highlights of my time at RCD, so many memories of meeting so many wonderful people, and having such a lot of fun. The latest collection we have acquired contained many pieces bought at these events and has been a real trip down memory lane for me. We have not had time to check, photograph and feature even half what we have so do keep an eye on the website or Facebook for new pieces as they are ready.

Demand for the older paperweights remains very high so apologies if the one you want is sold out, we do have a “Wish List” which we can add you to for items you are searching for.

In previous years the Queen has been reluctant to mark her accession due to it coming as it did as a result of her father’s death; she has instead marked the anniversary of her Coronation. Next year will be 70 years since that spectacular day and a number of commemoratives are planned to mark the occasion. We are pre-viewing our exclusive Goviers range this month before it goes on general release in September. Caroline Dadd has once again excelled herself with the thoughtfulness of the design and we have added more items to our range this time. We hope you like it as much as we do.

Working with skilled artisans is one of the great pleasures of what we do. Whether it is the skilled potters and artists at Moorcroft in Stoke on Trent who produce some of the finest art pottery in the world, or the jewellers in Birmingham creating our splendid pieces, they all have skills that I can only marvel at, and they are all so modest about what they do. Learning about diamonds and ring making has been something new to me but is a whole new world of excitement, and some intrigue! What we have on show this month is truly spectacular and a testament to the skills in this country.

With a birthday in mid-December, I have always tried my best to restrain Janet’s enthusiasm for the festive season until after my birthday. Goviers has well and truly put paid to that! We seem to have been talking Christmas since March and by June we are in full swing!

Thankfully for Janet many of our suppliers like to be ahead of the game too so Halcyon Days, Wedgwood and Waterford have ranges ready for us to show this month. It may be a little early to get the tree up but you can certainly get the new decorations ordered.

An apology.

We are deeply conscious that there have been serious delays with the supply of some of the Platinum Jubilee ranges. We are sincerely sorry about this and appreciate your extreme patience. Demand for these ranges caught all of us by surprise and despite the best laid plans of our factories, and those of our key suppliers, we were totally overwhelmed. We hope that all orders will be on their way by the end of July. We are a small team at Goviers, and we work with small specialist factories to offer something different to what is on offer from the big companies but that does mean that increasing production quickly is not that easy. Rest assured we have increased supplies of whiteware on our own ranges to ensure that delivery of the Coronation ranges will be much more timely.

Mountcharles in County Donegal is a small village only a few miles west of Donegal Town. A Celebration of Seventy Years Reign, the Platinum Jubilee Basket is adorned with flowers which represent the four parts of the United Kingdom. The English Rose, Scottish Thistle, Welsh Daffodil and traditional Belleek Shamrocks represent Northern Ireland.

Each intricately woven and flowered basket is crafted in the same timeless fashion and skills introduced by William Henshall. The Dykes Medal is the premier award of the British Iris Society and is awarded to the most outstanding cultivar in the Dykes Trial that is of a sufficiently high standard.

For 2021, the medal was awarded to Olga Wells, a past editor of the British Iris Society Year Book, for her iris Spirit of Kent. With colouring reminiscent of a Turner oil painting, burnt copper-coloured flowers, holding slight flecks of gold around edges of falls, soar up the verticals of this Moorcroft jug. Cultivated by Cedric Morris, Benton Olive is an English iris with subtle colouring and exquisite form. Irises nod gently within roundels straddled with green and gold foliage, twisting in Art Nouveau decadence.

Olga Wells, editor of the British Iris Society Year Book and judge for the British Iris Society, is a long-standing, invaluable member of the Kent Group. Many of her irises are named after Kent places of interest. Emma’s design is inspired by iris Hever Castle, a Dykes medal (2019) winner. Iris Hever Castle is an iris that stands proud, petals rise and twist with flattened leaves that fan up like clock hands. Pale yellow-eyed grass, Sisyrinchium striatum, straddles the sides of the clock with fans of iris-like foliage, topped by clusters of delicate, pale yellow flowers.

A dramatic iris relative from southern Africa that produces spires of deep violet, Artistea Capitate, has her blooms peppered around windows holding the iris Margot Holmes. Blooms of unearthly scarlet dazzle as standards and falls swirl like ruffled cotton over a blast of yellow Bobarati and pure-white crocuses curl and coil up from the base of the vase against a midnight ground. Circling under the ring of the vase, iris Margot Holmes blooms are raised up against an ivory body to reveal the unparalleled beauty of the glaze colour. This particular iris has special meaning for the British Iris Society, as it was the first to be awarded the prestigious Dykes Medal in 1927, when it was raised by Amos Perry, one of the most celebrated hybridisers of Beardless hybrid irises.

Barry Emmerson, a British iris hybridiser, captured a sunset in an iris with his Iceni Sunset and for his efforts was awarded the Premiere iris award, the Dykes Medal, in 2014. In soft Moorcroft glazes the mysterious lines of clouded-pink on the edges of the Iceni Sunset petals gradually fade into a haze of purple. With beards of intense orange they sink into a sublime sunset with the aptly named iris, Shepherds Delight as they float around the vase in rotation with the majestic purple hues of iris Headlines by Leonard Brummitt; introduced in 1953. In perfect harmony, Shepherds Delight irises bloom in shades of pink merging into barley-yellow at base of the falls, and burst with vibrant ambers to set the sky ablaze.

Ninety-two years later, Moorcroft designer, Kerry Goodwin, triumphs with her vase featuring the famous G.P.Baker iris. With standards of rich primrose yellow which flutter down into falls of canary yellow with dazzling fawn-coloured tail beards, these giant flowers fan out on their profusely branching stalks from the base of this elegant vase.

The attractive but unobtrusive wood warbler, chosen

by Vicky for her design, has bright yellow upper parts, throat and upper chest and white under parts. Despite being widespread in deciduous forest in Europe, particularly in the western oak woods of Wales, the species is on the RSPB’s Red List, meaning that they face severe decline and need urgent conservation action. The wood warblers of Vicky’s design, a limited edition of 25, sit on leafy oak branches, laden with plump acorns. Their beaks are wide open, letting the world know about their presence during the dawn chorus.

St Giles Catholic Church in Cheadle, Staffordshire is considered to be one of the finest of all the churches built by the celebrated nineteenth century architect, writer and designer Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin.

His prolific output included the interior designs for the Palace of Westminster and over one hundred churches and cathedrals, of which St Giles’ Catholic Church is a shining example. Vicky’s design celebrates the church’s beautiful stained glass.

Flowerheads of hottentot fig are often a golden yellow, fading to pink over time, and frame a centre of tiny stamens.

Like gold medallions in the midsummer sun, these dainty flowers can be found around the edges of beaches, sand dunes and coastal cliffs, mainly on the south west coastline of Cornwall and Devon, but also as far north as Anglesey.

The avocet is one of the most readily identified shorebirds in the UK, with its iconic silhouette featuring as the RSPB logo. Reduced to a single breeding pair in Britain 50 years ago, the marsh harrier is now thriving in its Minsmere wetland stronghold.

A female marsh harrier, forms an impressive silhouette on this Moorcroft limited edition for the RSPB as it nicks the sky like a razor with a sharp-cut chevron on a backdrop of blue over the Minsmere marshes and reed beds. On the reverse of the vase, a solitary male marsh harrier sits in pensive stillness.

Goviers are excited to launch this spectacular hand made ring, inspired by a design most cherished

by H.M.Queen Elizabeth II. The original design of which was briefed by Prince Philip in 1946, to a London jeweller and made from the metal used in his mother’s tiara. In 1947 this was to become H.M. Queen Elizabeth II’s Engagement ring. Rather than being a part of the Crown Jewels, this is a highly personal piece of jewellery. The ring has been worn regularly over the past 75 years right up to the present day and is thought to be the Queen’s favourite ring The 2ct centre stone is 8mm, with 12 stones (6 either side) totalling a quarter of a carat in the shoulders of the ring.

The Goviers H.M. Queen Elizabeth II ring has been handcrafted using traditional jewellery making techniques in Birmingham’s Historic Jewellery Quarter, the home of the UK’s Jewellery crafts since the 17th century.

It is only available until December.

Each ring is individually made to order with two main stone options. This stunning ring can have a 2ct 8mm white topaz or a 2ct SI 8mm diamond centre stone. A high end 2ct 8mm diamond of SI quality of fire and sparkle, are eye wateringly expensive at this size and brilliance, but are a great investment for the future. Hallmarked at the Birmingham Assay office with the addition of the collectable Platinum Jubilee hallmark which is only available until December 31st 2022.

The 1953 sixpence was the first to bear Queen Elizabeth II’s Head. It also marked the first year of the design on the reverse of the coin. It’s design represents the 4 home nations: English rose, Welsh leek, Scottish thistle and the shamrock from Northern Ireland. CT and EF represent designers Cecil Thomas and Edgar Fuller. FID DEF translates to ‘Defender of the Faith’. On the obverse (front) the text translates to ‘Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, Queen of the Britains.

Struck by the Royal Mint when at Tower Hill in London, from cupro nickel. This genuine original sixpence has been polished by hand and plated with platinum.

The 2022 half sovereign created and struck by the Royal Mint, includes a special time limited Platinum Jubilee design. It has a new version of H.M. Queen Elizabeth’s Coat of Arms, the shield surrounded by the Order of the Garter, and the crowned Lion of England and silver Unicorn of Scotland on each side.

The current Queen Elizabeth 11 Head appears on the front of the half sovereign. It is 22 carat gold or 91.66% pure fine gold.

Situated in Mill isle, County Down, Ballycopeland Windmill is the only remaining functioning Windmill in Northern Ireland. With a typical stone tower, the Windmill was built around the 1780’s-90’s and has three storeys.

The origins of Father Christmas in England date back to ancient pre-Christian midwinter festivals where an unnamed pagan figure, robed in a green hooded cloak and wearing a wreath of holly, ivy or mistletoe, would come to lift people’s spirits during the bleakest time of year - the colour green synonymous with the arrival of spring in the subsequent months. It was not until the later part of the 19th century that his iconic red suit (often attributed to a certain drinks company’s marketing campaign) was adopted.
