Welcome to our February 2021 catalogue.

It may be a month into 2021 but we would all like to wish you a very happy New Year. I don’t think many of us are sad to leave 2020 behind us and focus on the light at the end of the very long Covid 19 tunnel. Thankfully we have not had time to get bored during lockdown as orders have kept flowing in and, despite Janet having to work solo in the warehouse, we have kept up with shipments. One or two suppliers have had on going problems but by and large things have kept moving. As we enter 2021 we currently have a few challenges bringing goods into the country and costs look to be rising.

With no trade shows in the calendar for the first part of the year the deadline for suppliers having new products ready seems to have slipped a bit. Despite that Janet has managed to get together a really exciting selection of new pieces plus a few where we have limited stock and they really are a last chance to buy. Merrythought has their 2021 range ready in excellent time and we really love what they have done. A great Shropshire based family company that we always enjoy working with.

Obviously, we are all a very romantic lot at Goviers and so you will not be surprised to see a very special collection of quality gifts for St Valentine’s Day. All of these pieces are in stock but quantities are limited so please order promptly to ensure delivery before the 14th. We are told that if you look carefully you will see pictures of a Duchess and a Countess both wearing Halcyon Days bangles in the days before Christmas. Surely an ideal gift for the one you love!

More so than ever this year Christmas ornaments were in great demand. Many of these become highly collectable and in many cases are sold out but we have a few fabulous Georg Jensen pieces left which are even more exquisite than they look in the pictures. We gave a few as presents ourselves this year and they were extremely well received.

This is quite a year for Royal birthdays, HM Queen Elizabeth turns 95 and the Duke of Edinburgh reaches 100, surely something worth celebrating. Both have provided a wonderful example of dedication and support over their many years of royal service, and the Queen’s words during the pandemic have given comfort and strength to many. We are delighted to have been able to develop a range of fitting tributes with some truly wonderful designers and crafts people. Our exclusive 95th birthday Merrythought Bear was pre-launched before Christmas and the response was amazing. We still have some of the edition remaining but expect it to sell out shortly. Our designer Caroline has also been busy designing ranges to mark the Royal birthdays and the forthcoming Platinum Jubilee. The bone china pieces will all be made in Stoke on Trent and most are limited editions, the Royal Scot glasses will be hand engraved in England.

Elizabeth Welch, one of our most popular new designers, has created a pair of black swans in glass. Exclusive to Goviers and a small limited edition. There are other pieces in development for later in the year which we are very excited about

Many of us who have been lucky enough to meet members of the Royal family have stories to tell. We thought this time we could give the extended members of the Goviers’ family a chance to recount some of their memories.

"How times have changed since our Queen's Coronation. At the time I was a teenager living in a Welsh country farmhouse with no television, in the whole of the village there was just one. Her decades on the throne with her calm and reassuring presence, and her strength and stability have shown her to be such an inspiring monarch that we all know and love."

"I have always been a great admirer of the Queen and was delighted when I was able to stand near Marble Arch in the rain to watch her golden coach pass, returning from her coronation at Westminster Abbey. It was a great spectacle which made up for my new red shoes being ruined in the rain! Later in her reign when visiting Wales, she came to my home town of Brecon. As she left the station I was in the youth choir that sang to welcome her. She was a petite but charming lady, and I, and my fellow choristers were delighted to see her."

Jean (Simon's mother) “On my first visit to Royal Ascot I was lucky enough to see the Queen and Prince Phillip arrive in their magnificent horse-drawn carriage. Prince Philip in his top hat, the Queen in a brightly coloured outfit with a matching hat. When they inspected the horses and congratulated the winner, I don't think I realised at the time just how close I was to them. From watching the Coronation on TV with my mum and brother, to seeing her today, she has been a constant in my life. Hearing that she has had her vaccination has encouraged me to do the same.”

As we start a new year there is hope that we have a route out of this crisis which has meant so many people have been confined to their homes. Even as we grow you will still get to know the people that you talk to on the phone, none of us mind if you have a favourite!

Vicky's choice was a striking Gatekeeper butterfly with his orange body tipped with brown edges and black and white circles.

This delicate butterfly spends much of its time basking with wings open in the hot summer sun. Here in this design, it enjoys bright yellow Common Ragwort, soft clouds of Wild Marjoram and delicately tubelined Bramble blossom and berries.

It is often said that one should be as shrewd as snakes and innocent as doves. One panel has a snake coiling around a cluster of doves whilst the other has a rather shrewd mouse poking his head out from behind the stem with eyes alert and ears erect. It seems he has also been given wings to allow him to escape any predators that may slither along the ground. This double panel vase has a colour palette of blue, turquoise, manganese purple, green, Indian red and mustard yellow.

Taking both Georg Jensen’s early Art Nouveau silver pieces and the floral photography of Karl Blossfeldt as inspiration, this year’s Christmas Collectables bring a touch of nature into the home. Designer Sanne Lund Traberg painstakingly created paper flowers resembling those picked from her own garden and translated them into a collection of beautifully crafted gold and palladium plated decorations. All the gold plating of these are done by Georg Jensen’s own craftsmen in Denmark.
