February Ramblings!

Firstly, let me wish you a rather belated Happy New Year. It certainly looks as if 2022 will be the year when the world must learn to live with Covid 19 and perhaps one where we will start to get used to a new normal. Whatever that is.

The first catalogue of 2022 is certainly a full one. Our annual sale allows us to make room in the warehouse for the new pieces that we know are coming and allows you the chance to pick up a bargain on the very limited stock that we have left. I would urge you to act quickly on the sale items, and last chance to buy pieces, as they do not tend to hang around very long.

The start of the New Year has seen a flurry of announcements from Buckingham Palace on the plans for the H M Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. This really is a once in a generation event, I am not sure that the country has realised what a truly momentous occasion this is. Neither Prince Charles, nor Prince William, is likely to achieve this milestone. It is with this in mind that the talented team at Moorcroft have created a truly fantastic range to mark the occasion. In the past H M Queen has been reluctant to celebrate her accession as by definition that means celebrating the death of her father, instead preferring to mark her Coronation.

The inclusion of Treetops in the Moorcroft range is a poignant reminder of where Her Majesty was when her world was turned literally upside down. Since then, she has been a truly inspiring and stable presence in our lives, many of us never having known another monarch.

In addition to the superb Moorcroft range the team at Merrythought in Ironbridge have been busy designing and making teddies fit for a Queen.

This year marks the 175th Anniversary of the birth of Margarete Steiff and there are some amazing new collector bears to celebrate this event. The worldwide demand for these pieces will be extremely high, and our allocation is very limited, so we do urge you to act promptly to secure these ranges as they will sell out within weeks.

It is with great regret that I must pass on the news that there will be no more Royal Doulton figures.

Having spent several years as Brand Manager for the Royal Doulton figures range, when it was made in Stoke on Trent, this seems like the end of an era. I know many of you will be disappointed and we share that sentiment. We have also been told that Royal Copenhagen will no longer be available to retailers in the UK. Both Janet and I, along with a number of other retailers lobbied hard on behalf of collectors for this to be reconsidered but with no success. I know that many of you have collected the Christmas range for many decades and we share your disappointment that we cannot continue to supply them to you.

For the romantics…

Janet and Grace have enjoyed putting together the pages of gifts for the one you love. Although I am not sure that Tom or I got great marks in the romance stakes from what I was overhearing! We might surprise you; you never know!

The number of new introductions from Derby has dropped dramatically since my days there as the company is now concentrating on restaurant tableware. We have one new item which has just made the catalogue, but reduced space for my ramble! We also have some new interesting pre-loved pieces and more will be on our website shortly.

Goviers has always tried to offer a service to collectors wanting to find pieces they missed, and we hope to expand that service this year to become the only place to go for the best pre-loved paperweights.

I hope that there is something to tempt you to treat yourself, or a loved one in this edition and we look forward to an exciting year of new products and new brands ahead.

When Prince Philip married Princess Elizabeth more than 70 years ago, he gave up everything for the woman he loved.

He abandoned his Danish and Greek royal titles, and even his surname to become Britain’s longest serving consort. As such, senior designer Rachel Bishop felt that the flower named Clematis Prince Phillip, should stand as a design in itself. Each petal holds gently-waving edges, coloured mauvey-blue with a pink-red bar through the middle and all meeting in a central crown of brown-tipped stamens, set against a pure ivory ground. The rich colours of the petals wave like flags in jubilation as they celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

In the multitude of countries, realms and states which have hosted a royal tour for HRH Queen Elizabeth II, there is perhaps no other location more magical than a hideaway place in Kenya. For Queen Elizabeth, Treetops and Sagana Lodge were chosen for a relaxing, wildlife-watching pause in Kenya during what was set to be a long tour of Australia and New Zealand, but destiny had other plans.

On February 6, 1952, George VI died in his sleep, making his heir apparent and elder daughter, Elizabeth, Queen of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth. This remarkable collection holds scenes from the natural world where the crown of our greatest and longest serving monarch began to shimmer under the heat of the African sun.

In 1947, when Princess Elizabeth and Prince Phillip married, Sagana Lodge was given to them as a gift from the people of Kenya.

Beside a trout stream, it was at Sagana Lodge, that the news of King George VI’s death was broken to HRH Queen Elizabeth by her husband, Prince Philip. By good fortune the lodge is located at the point where the Sagana and other rivers all meander their way towards Tana River. The river meanders down among pineapple palms, past the most-humble of Royal residences, a bungalow with a low sloping roof, superbly situated under the foothills of Mount Kenya itself.

NEW In Emma’s Sagana Lodge design, history comes alive with the rich colours of HRH Queen Elizabeth II’s platinum reign. As Mount Kenya soars above fig-trees; Lilac-Breasted Roller Birds and a Forest King Butterfly adorned with flashes of Royal Blue, can be seen among the gardens of Sagana Lodge.

The Lilac-Breasted Roller Bird is the national bird of both Kenya, and is considered to be one of the most beautiful birds in existence. They look wistfully in each direction, as if in deep contemplation. Emma creates a plumage that dives through ochre flax, and dusky-pink lavender with further field marks of electric-blue and fox-red, and all complete with a turquoise flank and long, tail streamers. In truth, this living rainbow within our world, nestles in roses fused with orange (for admiration) and pink (for love), brings a depth of colour and grace hitherto unknown in Moorcroft art. Kenya is home to over 900 species of butterfly.

At Sagana lodge, The Queen will probably have noticed Forest-King Charaxes - butterflies slowly spiralling downwards with flashes of Royal-blue over delicate pink orchids.

Undoubtedly, her father, King George VI would have been so proud of his daughter. Her crown will have brought with it a fair, yet heavy burden. By its very nature, succession cannot ever see a father’s pride until that day is spent.

On February 5th 1952, Princess Elizabeth, then 25, spent the afternoon with her cine-camera capturing a herd of rhinos from her elevated vantage point above the Treetops waterhole in Aberdare National Park. That night, as she slept cradled in a fig tree, she actually ascended to her throne. This is a dramatic Moorcroft design.

A lone rhino calf sits as two others sup at the waterhole while fig trees rise like cumulonimbus clouds lifting Treetops towards the distant outline of Mount Kenya, known across the world as the mountain of brightness.

No one could fail to love the simple charm of this late winter beauty, the snowdrop. To botanist, John Gerard, writing in 1597, it was the ‘Timely flowering Bulbus violet’ while an older English name was ‘candlemas bells’, a nod to its early flowering habitat at Candlemas, six weeks after Christmas.

Vicky’s plaque features the double snowdrop ‘Flore Pleno’, combined with classic snowdrops inspired by those she saw at Chatsworth stately home in Derbyshire. The snowdrops were set on an inclined border so Vicky set about creating a sense of perspective as if you are low to the ground with the plants, with the bare trees and Snow Moon above you. The nights may still be long and cold, but a hint of spring is in the air with the clever use of green and golds in the undergrowth, as the world slowly starts to awaken.

Irises are much loved as a flamboyant summer flower, but there are also winter irises that bloom during cooler periods as seen in Rachel Bishop’s design. This flowerbed erupts with the colour of irises and the softness of snowdrops as the ground softens and makes way for another year of life.

The bell-shaped vase is an apt vessel to hold nature’s timid child, as it swirls silently like a chorister playfully awaiting evensong. Petals ruffle as heads appear to chime, and foliage unravels as if they have become musical notes on achorister’s song sheet, gently billowing in the wind.

Emma's atmospheric scene was inspired by a painting by Toulouse-Lautrec entitled ' Marcelle Lender Dancing in the Bolero in Chilperic' from 1895. Emma thought many people would be enjoying a good 'knees up' in the fresh air when lockdown ended, and so the idea for her design was born.

MOORCROFT • ART POTTERY "Stepping back in time to the 1960s, Paul takes us to some of his favourite childhood jaunts in Stoke-on-Trent. These locations have stayed with the designer as warm, nostalgic recollections over the years so today he has married three locations up to form one continuous design. Firstly, we see an oatcake shop, which Paul explains was two doors down from his Gran’s house on Heaton Terrace. This particular shop was obviously a popular choice for the locals who are queuing on the pavement. Two young men sit on the floor to devour their freshly cooked, cheese-filled oatcakes. Perhaps one of these characters is Paul himself?

A turn of the corner and we are on to Peel Street in Dresden where the family barbers resides. Gents of all ages wait patiently for their turn. It is even possible that a young Paul and his father can be spotted through the window? A red and white barber’s pole marks the end of the terrace where a traditional 1960s road sweeper navigates the cobbles with his cart and brush.

The next scene features Clive’s Hardware Store, a shop once located on Wolstanton High Street which holds significance not only for Paul, but also two of his colleagues at Moorcroft. Clive was in fact father to Linda and Sandra Hartshorne, two of Moorcroft’s tubeliners. Paul recalls “I was always in there fetching things for Dad’s DIY projects”.

He recreates the window display with incredible detail, including household products and knick-knacks of all shapes and sizes. A cluster of pedestrians gather outside for a quick chat, while a puppy waits patiently for his morning walk.

As ever, Paul’s design just begs to be studied up-close in great detail in order to be fully-appreciated. From smoking bottle ovens to church spires and taverns, you are sure to find something new each time you delve into Paul’s Memories From My Past.

The bouquet culminates with wild grasses and beauty berries, Callicarpa bodinieri, dashing to and fro in the excitement. The design’s namesake stems from Ranelagh Gardens, the public pleasure gardens located in Chelsea in the 18th century, now part of the grounds of Chelsea Hospital and the site of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, a part of London that is now synonymous with floral excellence, in both botanical and pottery forms, around the world.

Muscari, or grape hyacinth as they are also known, originated in the Old World, and are native to Eurasia. One of the earliest garden flowers to bloom in the Spring, their colours range from pale blue to very dark blue. Here, they tower over Nicky’s snowdrops on this classic Moorcroft shaped vase.
