Welcome to our November 2020 catalogue.

I started my small contribution this time last year with “It is hard to believe…..”, all I can say is that the last twelve months have indeed been hard to believe. The challenges that everyone has had to face have been a test of patience, humour and sheer resilience. I think we will all emerge in the end touched in some way by what we have been through.

At Goviers things have also been challenging as supply has been, and still remains, difficult and many of you have waited longer for your orders than we would like. We have had less resources in the warehouse due to the impossible challenges of social distancing.

But we hope we have managed to deliver lovely parcels packed with care, and with the added treat of a few of our special chocolates.

Janet thought that it was worth drawing together all the wonderful products that have been made especially for this year, many of them for events that were not able to be marked as they perhaps deserved. We hope that in 2021 some of these momentous events,like VE Day and VJ Day, will be able to be commemorated as they deserve.

In the meantime, we hope the first few pages will remind you of a year that was like no other, and hopefully one you want to have something nice to look back on.

One of the challenges of the past 9 months has been finding new suppliers. With trade shows cancelled and travel difficult we have had to be resourceful and very patient but we have some stunning new brands for you. It was over 30 years ago that Janet’s sister introduced us to Sargadelos from Spain with a beautiful wedding gift of a sangria bowl and cups.

Almost since we purchased Goviers I have been trying to secure the brand to sell in the UK and finally we have. This range is not available anywhere else in the UK and we think it is a superb addition to our range; skilfully produced ceramic with a definite Spanish style.

It is funny what sticks in your mind from your childhood but for me one of those things was the Hummel figurines that both my mother, and her late sister Joan, had safely out of reach of inquisitive young fingers!

Janet’s mother also had a precious Hummel figure too! Over the years I have encountered them on my travels to the USA and Far East but it is a long time since I have seen them here, until now. Again, this has taken a long time to secure but it is the most exquisite range and one that I am sure will have memories for many. Still 100% hand made in Germany and a real joy. There are far too many new products for me to highlight more than a few but please do have a good read of the catalogue, Janet has put a huge amount into it again this time.

It has not been a year with many launches from Royal Crown Derby but we are delighted

to be one of the very first to show you the new Christmas Wreath Robin. We have stock promised for Christmas. Steiff have a new Nativity set and a new Mouse Queen ornament, both of which are superb. When our first delivery of Georg Jensen arrived we were amazed.

The product, and the packaging, are so much better than we were able to show them, well worth a second look. Halcyon Days have been enormously supportive of Goviers this year and we are delighted that we can bring you an early opportunity to purchase some of their 2021 boxes, as well as for the first time having their stylish range of bangles.

Moorcroft as ever have some wonderful introductions for Christmas and a new trinket box which is only available from a very few stockists worldwide. We were blown away by the reaction to the Wordsworth pen collection and we have added, following suggestions, a range of ballpoints and a rollerball. Goebel’s 2020 Christmas range is as enchanting as ever and is one we love. The new Dregeno range, which we first showed in September, has been really popular and so we have added new pieces to the range. A couple are very similar to childhood toys we both played with! One of our most popular launches of late has been the Elizabeth Welch glass sculptures. We have added more items from her studio this time. There are loads more new pieces as you will see, I always think each catalogue is our best yet but again this time I really do! I hope that there is plenty to tempt you to treat yourselves, and your loved ones, this Christmas.

ORDER EARLY TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT

This year more than ever we have to encourage you to place your orders for Christmas as soon as possible. We have a huge amount of product already in stock, and a lot more on order, but many companies are still running at greatly reduced capacity and so what we have not got on order now we are unlikely to get this year. In addition, the Royal Mail are suffering from a lot of absenteeism and as a result are suggesting posting even earlier this year. The last ordering date for the UK is 16th December, Australia 30th November and the rest of the world the 7th December. We are despatching until Saturday 19th December but after that Royal Mail are urging caution on guaranteed delivery.

It is very difficult to know what Christmas 2020 will be like but all we can do is to wish you a happy and safe Christmas and a very healthy and peaceful New Year.

This prestigious vase symbolically shows Koi carp overcoming adversity. Legend has it that a huge school of golden Koi gained strength swimming against a strong current in the Yellow River.

When they reached a waterfall, a few tried to leap over the top of it until one, a black Koi, succeeded. In the foreground, is a Koi carp just about to leap, changing from gold to black.

Those who gave up the battle to go up river, turned from gold to blue and can be seen amongst the swirls of the waterfall.

The neck of the vase reveals a red setting sun behind a snow-capped mountain, with branches of blossom.

ELIZABETH WELCH • GLASS SCULPTURES Elizabeth creates highly detailed borosilicate glass sculptures of animals particularly bird, insect and marine life. Each piece is made entirely by hand using coloured borosilicate glass rods which are melted in a high oxygen and propane flame. Each piece is annealed in an electrically controlled kiln for lasting strength and durability. By building layers of opaque and transparent glasses she has developed her own recognisable style of flame worked glass.

Taking both Georg Jensen’s early Art Nouveau silver pieces and the floral photography of Karl Blossfeldt as inspiration, this year’s Christmas Collectables bring a touch of nature into the home. Designer Sanne Lund Traberg painstakingly created paper flowers resembling those picked from her own garden and translated them into a collection of beautifully crafted gold and palladium plated decorations. All the gold plating of these are done by Georg Jensen’s own craftsmen in Denmark.
