Coming ashore from the flying boat to the Savoy mooring

“Welcome to the Royal Savoy!” how it all started Since the early 1900’s, the Hotel Savoy has welcomed discerning visitors to Madeira. From a small family business with humble ambitions and the name “Royal Hotel”, grew a tradition of sincere and discerning hospitality. In 1914 the hotel’s name was changed to the Hotel Savoy and subsequently had so much success that the hotel was twice extended to be able to cater for the ever increasing demand for its unique atmosphere and facilities. In the early days, visitors were brought to the hotel by

bullock cart from the harbour. The first taxi on the island was hired to replace the bullock carts, and well before the island’s airport was built, a flying boat service was introduced from Southampton to Madeira. Many famous celebrities came to the Hotel Savoy as its reputation for excellence grew worldwide. The Royal Savoy opened in April 2002, a century after its first inauguration and is the latest enhancement to the facilities offered by the Savoy Group.

The Hotel Savoy Today’s “classic” Savoy offers its guests the utmost privacy and friendly sophistication throughout the extensive resort facilities. Located a short distance from the bustling harbour and right in the middle of Funchal’s illustrious restaurant quarter, the hotel has 337 tastefully decorated rooms and suites, all offering individual balconies. The hotel’s wonderful gardens contain many exotic plants and trees, a large Koi fish aquarium, and has numerous leisure and invigorating spa activities on offer.

Superb cuisine is served in supremely elegant surroundings, and quite the loveliest way to start the day is to take traditional breakfast from the private sunny balconies with fabulous views over the ocean. Throughout the development of this 5-star internationally acclaimed hotel, one major aspect has always been paramount; that being client satisfaction and well being.

Madeira, the garden island In reality Madeira is one immense natural park. Mother Nature has blessed the island with natural beauty that makes Madeira a true botanical garden where side by side grow English roses, Asiatic orchids and fruits from all continents. The sea is ever present in the lives of the people on Madeira. The only village on the whole of the island where the Atlantic Ocean is not

visible, is the village of Curral des Freiras (Nun’s Valley), built deep in a mountain valley and out of sight of passing pirate ships of old. Along the seacoast, the Atlantic changes from clear light blue, to pale green and eventually white as the waves crash against the cliffs and rocky shores of the Island that is truly “The floating garden of the Atlantic.
