About Al-Salam Institute A CENTRE FOR ARABIC AND ISLAMIC SCIENCES Al-Salam Institute (ASI) was established in Oxford, UK in 2006 as a means to facilitate the study of Arabic and traditional Islamic sciences for full-time students and working professionals.

Through a combination of authentic Islamic scholarship and modern academic techniques, we deliver our pioneering 6-year ‘Alimiyyah Programme (also known as the Islamic Scholarship Programme) in London and live online.

Intermediate Level DIPLOMA IN CLASSICAL ARABIC AND ISLAMIC DISCIPLINES

The Intermediate level in Classical Arabic and Islamic Disciplines is designed to enhance and build upon the modules studied in the Foundation level. Students will be educated in both classical and contemporary perspectives, thereby cultivating a comprehensive understanding of the religion in the modern era.

The three-year course forms the second level of ASI’s six-year Alimiyyah Programme and can also be taken as an independent programme.

Students are able to enter the Alimiyyah Programme at this level directly on the condition of satisfactory references and Islamic education history.

Students who successfully complete all three years of the Intermediate level (including written assignments and examinations) will be awarded a Diploma in Classical Arabic and Islamic Disciplines.

Hadith Studies Unit 1: Study of Evidences of the Sunnah Seminar: Index of the Major Hadith Collections

Overview

About the Author

The Study of Evidences of the Sunnah is the study of the hadith of ahkam (rulings). It is a sub-genre of hadith studies, encompassing a specific collection of ahadith pertaining to legal rulings.

Historically, scholars of different schools of law have written different texts to justify, defend, or provide evidence for the particular school of thought to which they may adhere. Two classical examples can be found in the Shafi’i text, ‘Bulugh al-Maram’ by ibn Hajr al-Asqalani (d. 852 A.H.), and in the Hanbali treatise of ‘Umdat al-Ahkam by ‘Abd al-Ghani al-Maqdasi (d. 600 A.H.)

Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi is a world-renowned scholar of Indian origin, who has resided in England for an extensive time. After receiving in-depth training to an advanced level in the traditional Islamic disciplines at Nadwat al-Ulama, Lucknow, India, and receiving a PhD in Arabic literature from Lucknow University, he became a research fellow at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies.

There, he conducted research for a number of years (including topics of Hadith and Sufi orders in India).

About the Text The full name of the text is: AlIhkam li al-Mujma’ ‘alayhi min Ahadith al-Ahkam. This anthology is a collection of the hadith narrations pertaining to legal rulings agreed upon by the four schools of thought. The text is unique in that it draws solely upon the hadith narrations agreed upon by Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, enabling students to study a definite collection of evidences in a nonbiased and impartial manner. The wordings used for these hadith are those that are found in Sahih alBukhari.

About the Author

This module covers the second third of Mukhtasar al-Quduri, beginning with the Islamic law of Marriage and Divorce and ending with the chapters on Inheritance.

As the text contains only a brief overview to the laws of inheritance, students will study this area indepth from al-Siraji fi al-Mirath, a tract specific to Inheritance laws in the Hanafi school of thought.

The Hanafi jurist Abul-Husayn alQuduri was born in Baghdad in 362 A.H. / 973 C.E. and died on Sunday 5th Rajab 428 A.H. /1037 C.E. aged 66.

Primary Texts Mukhtasar al-Quduri al-Siraj fi al-Mirath

The author of al-Siraji was Hafiz al-Din Abu al-Barakat Abdullah ibn Ahmad ibn Mahmud al-Nasafi (better known simply as Imam Nasafi). He was born in the town of Nakhshab and was a prolific writer, having authored a number of commentaries and original works.

He passed away in the year 710 or 711 A.H.

Mukhtasar al-Quduri is one of the most celebrated and influential treatises in any Islamic legal school and is the foundation for the Hanafi school of law. It is both the first source for scholars and a manual for the general reader.

Upon successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Al-Siraji is a famous treatise on the law of Inheritance based on the Hanafi madhab. The text covers the legal rulings and respective rights in the estate of the deceased.

In addition, the text covers what constitutes a valid Islamic will and the legal impediments to inheritance.

Overview

About the Author

The study of Usul al-Fiqh is the study of the historical development of Islamic jurisprudence. The goal is to become familiar with the historic, social, and religious factors in the development of Islamic legal schools, and to become acquainted with the framework of jurisprudential discussion. Students who study this module should have completed some previous studies in the area, as tuition will be based less around identifying the sources of Islamic law, and more around how they have been used by Imams and in the practice of ijtihad to form clear and delineated schools of thought.

Shaykh Abdul Wahab Khallaf has written many compilations on Islamic Law and Islamic legal theory. He is an Imam in the Arabic language, constitutional law, and Islamic jurisprudence. He was born in Egypt and memorised the Quran by the age of 12. He completed his studies under many scholars and graduated from al-Azhar University.

He was later appointed as professor at Cairo University where he served until his retirement, though he continued to teach through illness and old age until he died in 1375 A.H. /1956 C.E.

About the Author

This module builds upon the theory of Quranic Exegesis taught in the Foundation level and intends to convey to students the exegetical tools that can be employed to understand what God is communicating to them through His Book, and what He expects them to do. At the same time, students will learn the different ways in which the Quran can be misinterpreted, and how to remain faithful to the text by following the Prophetic teachings and the way of the early Muslims.

Taqi al-Din Ahmad ibn Abd al-Halim (more commonly known simply as Ibn Taymiyyah) was born into a family of reputable Hanbali scholars in Harran, in modern day Turkey, in 661 A.H. / 1263 C.E. He left a lasting legacy on Islamic reformation, and was teacher to the likes of Imams Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, Ibn Kathir, Al-Dhahabi, Al-Mizzi and Ibn Daqiq al-‘Id. He wrote profusely on a range of subjects before he passed away in 728 A.H. / 1328 C.E.

This work, authored by Shaykh alIslam Ibn Taymiyyah, sets out the proper principles to be utilised in interpreting the Quran. It has proven to be a unique treatise in that, despite its conciseness, this introduction has been quoted by Quranic scholars from the earliest times like Ibn Kathir and Al-Suyuti unto the present day.

About the Author

The Study of Evidences of the Sunnah is an evaluation of the ahadith of ahkam (rulings) and is therefore a sub-genre of Hadith studies. Historically, scholars of different schools of law have written different texts to justify, defend, or provide evidence for their legal positions. Two classical examples can be found in the Shafi’i text Bulugh al-Maram by Ibn Hajr alAsqalani (d. 852 A.H.) and in the Hanbali treatise Umdat al-Ahkam by ‘Abd al-Ghani al-Maqdasi (d. 600 A.H.)

Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi is a world-renowned scholar of Indian origin, who has resided in England for an extensive time. After receiving in-depth training to an advanced level in the traditional Islamic disciplines at Nadwat al-Ulama, Lucknow, India, and receiving a PhD in Arabic literature from Lucknow University, he became a research fellow at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, where he conducted research for a number of years (including topics of Hadith and Sufi orders in India).

About the Text The full name of the text is: AlIhkam li al-Mujma’ ‘alayhi min Ahadith al-Ahkam. This anthology is a collection of the hadith narrations pertaining to legal rulings agreed upon by the Four Schools of Thought. The text is unique in that it draws solely upon the hadith narrations agreed upon by Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, enabling students to study a definite collection of evidences in a nonbiased and impartial manner. The wordings used for these hadith are those that are found in Sahih alBukhari.

About the Author The Hanafi jurist Abu al-Husayn al-Quduri, was born in Baghdad in 362/ 973 and died on Sunday 5th Rajab 428/1037 aged 66.

The study of Usul al-Fiqh focuses on the principles upon which scholars have elaborated Islamic jurisprudence and therefore includes study of the historical development of the discipline. The goal is to become familiar with the historic, social and religious factors in the development of Islamic legal schools, and to become acquainted with the framework of jurisprudential discussion. Students who study this module should have completed some previous studies in the area, as tuition will be based less around identifying the sources of Islamic law, and more around how they have been used by Imams and in the practice of ijtihad to form clear and delineated Schools of Thought.

There are detailed discussions pertaining to the true author of Usul al-Shashi. The text has been recently published twice under the names of two different fourth century Hanafi jurists (Abu Ali Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Shashi (d. 344/955) and Abu Ya’qub Ishaq ibn Ibrahim al-Shashi (d. 325/936)).

Due to references within the text and some of the terminology used (which did not become commonplace until the 7th and 8th Centuries), commentators have also attributed the text to later Hanafi jurists such as Badr al-Din al-Shashi al-Shirwani and Nizam al-Din alShashi.

About the Text The text, entitled Rawa’i’ al-Bayan fi Tafsir Ayat al-Ahkam, is an exegetical work written by Shaykh Muhammad Ali al-Sabuni on the verses of legislature in the Quran. The purpose of the text – similar to other works in the genre of Ahkam al-Quran – is to assist in the derivation of the laws of the Shari’ah from Quranic verses.

About the Author Shaykh Muhammad Ali al-Sabuni was born in the city of Aleppo, Syria, on 1st January 1930. He was born into a learned family and began his religious instruction at a young age under the tutelage of his father, Shaykh Jamil. He graduated from the Faculty of Shari’ah at Al-Ahzar University in 1952 and, after returning to Aleppo to teach for a number of years, he was appointed as lecturer at the universities of Umm al-Qura and King Abdul Aziz, both in Makkah.

About the Author

The module on al-Muwatta will highlight the methodology used

by Imam Malik in extracting the narrations for his collection, and his methodology in understanding Islamic law and theology. Students will cover those occasions where there are disagreements with the strength of a certain hadith, or a certain hadith narrator, as well of the consistency with which the Imam applies his methodology.

Moreover, the criticisms of masters like Ibn Abi Dhibb, al-Daraqutni and others against some of the narrations included in the text will be fully discussed.

Malik ibn Anas ibn Malik ibn Abi ‘Amir al-Asbahi – most commonly known as Imam Malik – was born in 93 AH and died in the year 179, corresponding to 711 – 795 CE. It is widely thought that he is the scholar that the Messenger of Allah prophesised in the narration of alTirmidhi, and that he was the only one of the Four Imams who was considered an Imam in both fiqh and Hadith by both the legal jurists and the scholars of hadith. Imam al-Bukhari and others included him in their ‘Golden Chain of Narration’: Malik from Nafi’ from Abdullah ibn Umar from the Messenger of Allah (saw).

About the Text It is reported that Imam al-Shafi’i said, ‘There is not a single book on the face of the Earth, after the Book of Allah, which is more authentic than the book of Malik’.

The Muwatta is certainly one of the most important books in Islam.

It is the origin of the other books of hadith, as it is the first that compiled hadith narrations in a systematic manner. The narrations were to be used as a manual of Islamic law and mannerisms and this is the model which was further developed by Imams al-Bukhari, Muslim and others.

This module on comparative Islamic law will develop students’ understanding of the major Schools in the Islamic legal tradition.

Building upon years of in-depth study on the Hanafi School of Law, students will be introduced to the different jurisprudential methodologies employed in the other Schools, such as the Maliki, Hanafi, Shafi, Hanbali and Zahiri Schools.

Abul Walid Muhammad Ibn Ahmad Ibn Rushd, better known simply as Ibn Rushd or Averroes, was born into a family of jurists in Al-Andalus in 520/1126. A distinguished jurist of the Maliki School, he wrote many tracts on Maliki jurisprudence, as well as on logic, philosophy, and the secular sciences of the medieval era. He was appointed physician to the court of the Caliph Abu Yaqub Yusuf in 1182 C.E., where he continued to serve until shortly before his death in 594/1198.

Overview In this module on the principles of Islamic jurisprudence, students will cover the wider objectives of the Shari’ah as a whole in terms of its wisdoms, values and guidance. The sciences of legal maxims and the objectives of Islamic law will be critically evaluated so as to determine their usage in the deliberations of Islamic jurists, as well as their application in the modern era. Emphasis will be placed on understanding and reconciling the different objectives proffered by leading Islamic thinkers throughout the course of history.

About the Author

This module on the Principles of Quranic Exegesis aims to consolidate students’ study of the science and to prepare them for independent study of exegetical works. Both the text and the style of teaching aim to establish a basis of Quranic interpretation and provide an overview of the various features of Quranic expression and scholarly exegesis.

Shah Wali Allah al-Dihlawi was born in 1703 C.E. four years before the death of the ruler Aurangzeb. His father, Shah Abdur Raheem was among the leading Hanafi jurists and a distinguished scholar of Islam in Delhi. Shah Wali Allah was introduced to Islamic education at the age of five and completed the recitation of the Quran by the age of seven. At the age of 23 he travelled to Makkah for pilgrimage. During his stay in Makkah he received training and Ijazah in hadith from various leading scholars of the Hijaz. Upon his return to India, he remained busy in teaching and writing until his death on 20th August, 1762.

Al-Fawz Al-Kabir fi Usul Al-Tafsir (The Great Victory in the Principles of Quranic Exegesis) is a concise primer on the topic of Usul al-Tafsir, originally written in the Persian language. The book is separated into five main chapters covering the classification of Quranic verses, their clarity, their structure and the different works of tafsir that have been written through the ages. The fifth section defining the difficult words in each chapter of the Quran was written sometime after the preceding four, and has been included as part of the text in some later editions.

About the Text The text, entitled Rawa’i al-Bayan fi Tafsir Ayat al-Ahkam, is an exegetical work written by Shaykh Muhammad Ali al-Sabuni on the verses of legislature in the Quran. The purpose of the text – similar to other works in the genre of Ahkam al-Quran – is to assist in the derivation of the laws of the Shari’ah from Quranic verses.

About the Author Shaykh Muhammad Ali al-Sabuni was born in the city of Aleppo, Syria, on 1st January 1930. He was born into a learned family and began his religious instruction at a young age under the tutelage of his father, Shaykh Jamil. He graduated from the Faculty of Shari’ah at Al-Ahzar University in 1952 and, after returning to Aleppo to teach for a number of years, was appointed as lecturer at the universities of Umm al-Qura and King Abdul Aziz, both in Makkah.
