About Al-Salam Institute A CENTRE FOR ARABIC AND ISLAMIC SCIENCES Al-Salam Institute (ASI) was established in Oxford, UK in 2006 as a means to facilitate the study of Arabic and traditional Islamic sciences for full-time students and working professionals.

Through a combination of authentic Islamic scholarship and modern academic techniques, we deliver our pioneering 6-year ‘Alimiyyah Programme (also known as the Islamic Scholarship Programme) in London and live online.

Foundation Level CERTIFICATE IN CLASSICAL ARABIC AND ISLAMIC SCIENCES

The Foundation level in Classical Arabic and Islamic Sciences is tailored for those students of Islamic knowledge who are just beginning their journey.

The course provides a solid basis in Islamic scholarship through part-time study with some of the most renowned and accomplished teachers in the UK, including Shaykh Akram Nadwi.

The year-long course forms the first level of ASI’s six-year Alimiyyah Programme and can also be taken as an independent programme of study.

It is the most popular course at Al-Salam Institute, being the gateway and most comprehensive course for students of knowledge who are keen to cement their understanding of the fundamentals of the religion.

Students who successfully complete all modules of the Foundation level (including written assignments and examinations) will be awarded a Certificate in Classical Arabic and Islamic Sciences.

The Certificate in Classical Arabic Language has been developed to take students from a beginner’s level in Arabic studies to proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing. About the Author

The module has been developed to introduce students to hadith studies and to derive points of benefit from the prophetic traditions. The style and method of teaching will be to encourage students to understand the essence of the teachings of the Prophet (saw), rather than to discuss any legal injunctions stemming from them (which will, undoubtedly, be touched upon at times). As such, this module simultaneously encompasses an important element to the programme, which is the tarbiyyah and personal development of the student.

Abu Zakariyya Yahya ibn Sharaf alNawawi – better known simply as Imam Nawawi – was a prominent Shafi’i scholar and prolific author of the 7th Century A.H. / 13th Century C.E. Born just outside of Damascus in the small town of Nawa, he was revered during his lifetime for his piety and commitment to Islamic knowledge and granted the epithet of Muhiyyadin (Reviver of the Religion). He authored many influential books, including one of the greatest commentaries of Sahih Muslim and the well-known Al-Arbaun al-Nawawi (40 Hadith of Imam Nawawi).

Islamic Law Chapters of Worship Course Code: LAW5000 Duration: 1 year Credits: 30 2016 entry: Open Muslim Life in the Modern Era

About the Author

This module covers the necessary aspects of the Islamic law of personal worship from the five pillars of Islam. Students will study ritual purification (taharah), the daily prescribed prayers (salah), purifying alms (zakah), fasting during the month of Ramadan (sawm) and the major pilgrimage (hajj); together with the textual evidences for these rulings. The Hanafi school of law will be the governing doctrine for the module, however views and evidences from the Shafi’i, Maliki and Hanbali schools of law will also be discussed.

The author of Mukhtasar al-Quduri, the Hanafi jurist Abul-Husayn alQuduri, was born in Baghdad in 362 A.H. / 973 C.E. and died on Sunday 5th Rajab 428 A.H. /1037 C.E. aged 66. Ibn Khallikan, Ibn Kathir, Ibn al-Jawzi (and others) considered him to be an utterly truthful hadith narrator (saduq) – which is a testament to his knowledge and memory in the field of hadith studies. He was one of the verifiers of the most authentic positions (ashab al-tarjih) in the Hanafi school of law, which is one of the highest levels one can attain.

Quranic Studies Unit 1: Quranic Exegesis Seminar: Exegesis of the Last Ten Surahs

Overview In this module, various Chapters (surahs) of the Quran will be studied with theological, legal, and spiritual emphases. Classical and contemporary interpretations of the Quran in the Muslim world will also be discussed and critically analysed. The concept of thematic and structural coherence in the Quran will be highlighted; a concept that was developed by the great Indian scholar Mawlana Hamid al-Din Farahi (d.1930).

This module will cover the main areas of Islamic jurisprudence (usul al-fiqh) as well as the historic, social, and religious factors in the development of Islamic legal schools. Mabadi fi Usul al-Fiqh

Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi is a world-renowned scholar of Indian origin, who has resided in England for an extensive time. After receiving in-depth training to an advanced level in the traditional Islamic disciplines at Nadwat al-Ulama, Lucknow, India, and receiving a PhD in Arabic literature from Lucknow University, he became a research fellow at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies.

There, he conducted research for a number of years (including in topics of Hadith and Sufi orders in India).

About the Author

Studying the principles of hadith terminology and criticism is a major component of hadith studies (ulum al-hadith). The goal of the course is to assist students in becoming acquainted with the most important terms in hadith criticism, and to gain a practical understanding of what these terms mean when applied in hadith analysis and isnad criticism.

Abu Abdullah Muhammad al-Arabi ibn Abu al-Mahasin al-FasI came from a family of great scholars and ascetics whose origins can be traced to Al-Andalus. Born in Fes, he began studying the Islamic sciences at the age of 4, and studied with his father as well as all the great scholars of Qarawiyyin. He wrote numerous works on diverse topics such as Arabic grammar, theology, hadith, genealogy, prophetic history, logic, poetry and more.

Introduction to Hadith Classification and Nomenclature

About the Text The text, also known as Manzumat Alqab al-Hadith, is a fifty verse rhyme written by the great North African scholar Abu ‘Abdullah Muhammad al-Fasi. The poem introduces the most important terminology in hadith sciences in a systematic and structured way.

The text itself has been popular in North Africa for centuries, and is a superior introductory text than the more famous Sharqi text, alBayquniyya.

About the Author

The Study of usul al-tafsir, the principles of Quranic exegesis, is part of the broader subject of ‘ulum al-Quran. The goal is to become acquainted with the essential aspects of the Scripture and rules of interpretation so as to avoid erring in one’s understanding.

At the introductory level, it is important to gain an overview of the main features of the sacred text and the disciplines that are connected to it in order to lay the foundation for the technical studies to follow.

Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad Ibn Juzayy al-Kalbi (1321 – 1357) was a scholar and a writer of poetry, history, and law from Al-Andalus. He wrote many religious works such as his Qawanin al-Fiqhiyyah (The Laws of Jurisprudence) a comparative manual of the jurisprudence of the five Sunni madhhabs (Maliki, Hanafi, Shafi`i, Hanbali, Dhahiri) with emphasis on the Maliki school.

He is also famous for his tafsir of the Quran, his book on legal theory Aqrab al-Wusul `ala `Ilm alUsul (The Nearest of Paths to the Knowledge of the Fundamentals of Islamic Jurisprudence).

The author of the text, Ibn Juzayy al-Kalbi, states that the first part of his introduction consists of ‘comprehensive general principles [of Usul al-Tafsir] within beneficial sections’. This is an apt description.

The text gives a sound, accessible overview of the principles of Quranic Exegesis in a simple Arabic language, making it a perfect introductory text for the beginner.

The text is a total 15 pages in length and sets out a solid foundation in the study of Usul al-Tafsir.

The Skills and Training module consists of the essential skills that will enhance the students’ development whilst at ASI. Students who have entered onto the programme without any prior studies in the science of Quran recitation (tajwid) will be able to study the theory and practice of the discipline in supplementary classes conducted online.

Similarly, etiquettes of a student of knowledge is an essential point of study for those embarking upon the noble path of religious knowledge.

In addition, Academic Writing and Research Methodology will detail the best practices in constructing a written paper, transliterating from Arabic into English (and back again), and referencing methods in academic articles, journals, and assignments.
