8-Ball Section
Highlights 2019-2020 We organised a 10-week Friday night Tournament towards the end of last year, with our manager Ian Morgan supporting this event by sponsoring a TV. Everyone who entered the competition on the night was given an entry to go into the draw for the TV. There was weekly prize money for the winners and runners-up in two categories. At the end of the 10-week, the overall winner was Stephen Gupwell, 2nd Don Highet, 3rd Chris Morgan and 4th Massey Kahu. The lucky winner of the TV was Tony Garthwaite. HAMILTON COSMOPOLITAN 8-BALL CLUB We started 2020 of with our Valentine’s Mixed pairs on Saturday 7th of February and a singles Tournament the day after. Both events were well attended. Winners in the mixed pairs: Lani Garrett and Stephen Gupwell. Singles winner: Stephen Gupwell The yearly North Island Invitational Masters Tournament was as always an excellent event with great players from near and far. This year’s final was probably the best final I have seen in the Club here for a long time. Runner up was Richard Parata from the Manurewa Cosmopolitan Club and winner of this year’s event Hata Kaipara who plays at the Whakatane RSA. It was unfortunate that we could only have one winner as they both deserved to have their name on the trophy. Not long after this the Corona Virus arrived in New Zealand and tournaments got cancelled left, right and centre. Rescheduling started for many tournaments and some won’t be played this year at all. We proudly hosted the Linda Ward Memorial Tournament this year as it was cancelled due to the virus in April at the RSA. It was a great tournament with lots of friends from Danny and Linda playing in this. Always a good tournament played in the right spirit and well organised by Stephen Gupwell and his daughter Cera. This year’s winner was Daniel Wilkinson from Tokoroa, runner-up Lionel Wairepo. As we combined this with our Linda Ward Club Tournament, the player who progressed the furthest in the Tournament gets the name on the HCC Trophy. This was Tony Garthwaite and the Ladies Highest achiever was Nita Knight. The Homestead Tavern pool Club from Kerikeri visited the Club on the 8th of August. They arrived with a strong 32- player team at the Club at 10.00am. Players from the Club turned up on the day and we ended up with 40 of us. A big thank you from the 8-ball section for the support and a great effort from each and everyone who played on that day. This is what a Club is all about. Keep it up. As many of you probably already know, the HCC and the 8-Ball are hosting the Clubs NZ Ladies Nationals and the National Masters Tournament in 2021. These are two big events over two weeks. We hope that members are available to help us out with these events as this takes a lot of organisation. The steering committee has started their meetings already. We will keep you posted. This will be a Club effort with benefits for the Hamilton Cosmopolitan Club. Keep cueing straight!!
