Charismatic singer to give concert in Bradford on Avon Garth Hewitt, troubadour, gospel singer, protest singer and activist released his first album in 1973, and his most recent, Something for the Soul, in 2014. With more than 40 albums in between, Garth’s rootsy storytelling songs are influenced by country, folk and blues. Garth founded the Human Rights charity, Amos Trust

Garth has visited areas of poverty, conflict, deprivation and disaster, prioritizing friendships with local people and bringing them encouragement, but always returning to Europe and the US with personal stories. . For eight years Garth was on the board of Umthombo Street Children project in Durban, South Africa. Telling the stories of how he came to write the songs, the journeys that led to them, and the Amos Trust partners that inspired them, Garth will also read from his new book’ Occupied Territories: the Revolution of Love from Bethlehem to the ends of the Earth’. Garth was asked to write this by publisher IVP in the States, and it reflects the theology and spirituality underpinning the work of the Amos Trust.

Corsham Weekend Walking Festival 12th to 14th June As an added bonus this will be linked with The Pound Arts Centre’s Summer Festival, where there will be events and workshops. The Festival will be opened by Box based explorer David HemplemanAdams.

Corsham is a beautiful historic town, just on the edge of the Cotswolds, with “Walkers are Welcome” status. It’s full of lovely places to eat and drink with interesting shops and has Corsham Court as a visitor attraction.

There will be 22 varied walks on offer, plus optional evening events, so there will be something to suit all walkers; distance walks for the more experienced, medium walks, several themed walks; we’re offering a “”doggie walk”, free children’s’ walks, geology walks, a Railway walk to Box, walks to the stone mines at Box, plus Heritage walks in and around Corsham. Help Save Wiltshire’s Magnificent Meadows The UK’s wildflower meadows are vanishing and with them our native flowers and the wildlife that rely upon them. Funded primarily by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and led by Plantlife, 11 partners have come together, to start the Save our Magnificent Meadows project this summer.

In North Wiltshire we are lucky to have some jewels of wildflower meadows left and need your help to manage them. If you would like to get involved we have regular volunteer tasks on the first Sunday of the month at Lower Moor Farm near Minety and on the third Saturday and third Thursday of the month at Blakehill Farm near Cricklade. Supporting wildlife: CFB Biodiversity Group It is six years since the community project, planting trees at Barton Country Park took place. Now some of the cherry trees are over 3 metres tall, while the slower growing holly has yet to reach 1 metre in height. The conservation group led by Leo Wirtz which meets on the second Saturday of the month have used some of their time clearing around the trees to avoid competition from grasses, brambles and burdock.

The trees have attracted in wildlife thus increasing the biodiversity of the area.

At Bearfield the wildflower area, orchard and hedge are all doing well. This is maintained by the biodiversity group twice a year.

Once to cut back the wildflowers once flowering is over and the second time to clear around the hedge to reduce the competition and to prune the fruit trees. As this is a community orchard the fruits are available to all. In 2015 we plan to put up an information panel so that people using the field can learn more about their environment. We welcome people with artistic and/or photographic skills to help us with this panel.

In 2014 this group expanded to take on 2 subgroups, the Swift group and the Seedy Sunday group. Reports on the Swift group activity have been reported.

Carol Craft welcomes all gardeners to the popular Seedy Sunday on 22nd February in the Upper Masonic Hall. Bring along your excess seeds to swap. There will also be stalls selling seeds and a chance to chat over coffee and a piece of homemade cake.

inter, is a good time to plant the bare root native hedging types. But before you start, do you know your hedges from your fedges, or even your edges. See below for what suits you!

Edgers Softening the edges of paths, borders or giving boundary to sections of gardens, eg herb gardens.

Good examples include common thyme, dwarf lavenders and Teucrium chamaedrys, which remain in leaf all the year and are maintained by a once a year shear.

These are simply plants through fencing, especially the ugly or unsightly, such as chain-link. Often most shrubby climbers can be used, like Winter Jasmine, Poorman’s Box (Lonicera nitida) or even ivy, but shrubs can also be used like privet or conifers.

Hedges These come in a series of functions/uses: Formal – can be large like some of the classic evergreen yew and box, or beach e.g. The National Trust garden, The Courts at Holt (opens again February) where hedges give a strong defined line and structure.

Native - Native hedges are used for country gardens and field and wildlife areas. The age of a hedgeline can be measured by the quantities of variety found in a set stretch of hedge. Often tree material is used e.g. oak, hawthorn, hazel, as well as dog rose.

Informal - these are softer line and ornamental, and can flower e.g. lavenders or Rosa rugosa. Berberis can also serve below windows as a burglar deterrent.

Screens - planting that obscures or filters views or offers opportunities for privacy without being solid boundaries. Usually shrubs, looser than an informal approach e.g. some fuchsias, Choysia, bamboo, (if contained), even acers.

Shaping Up - simple shapes such a balls, cones and obelisks can be done with shrubs, but is best with evergreens and is called topiary. The more complex shapes such a barley twists and animals take more skill and often a great deal of time. Try using Lonicera nitida and chicken wire for a useful and quicker approach.

Buying Bare root – bought while plants dormant in the winter. This is the least expensive way to buy, allow for some loss – e.g. hawthorn, blackthorn field maple.

Root balled – roots undercut and wrapped, again this is less expensive. Usually buy in winter e.g. yew.

Small Worlds Exhibition of Historic Dolls’ Houses from the 18th and 19th Centuries

A

collection of historic dolls’ houses and miniature furniture made in the 1700s and 1800s, which have never before been on public display, will be exhibited at No. 1 Royal Crescent in Bath from 9 May - 8 November 2015.

These amazing objects are part of the private collection of Liza Antrim and will be on display for the first time. This is a rare opportunity to engage a wide range of people with the heritage of childhood and will reveal a fascinating social history of the period.

Ten dolls’ houses will be on show in the Brownsword Gallery and within the rooms of No. 1 itself, an authentic Georgian townhouse revealing life above and below stairs nearly 250 years ago. The Small

Worlds exhibition will include a dolls’ house made in Bristol for the children of local chocolate maker Francis Fry in c1840 (“The Fry House”). The oldest dolls’ house “Bellamy’s House” was made c1762 and shows little evidence of having been played with. Displays of miniature furniture, textiles and dolls will be displayed alongside information about who made these items and how they have survived.

Often it was the children from impoverished backgrounds who made the houses and furniture these two centuries ago, to be played with by those in wealthier households. Children from the Ragged Schools, under the direction of Octavia Hill, made fine and intricate items to be sold by the Ladies’ Guild in 19th Century London under the label of “Art Toys”. The more robust furniture made by Evans & Cartwright was also to a large extent made using child labour, with the workers involved in every stage of manufacture from pressing and soldering to japanning and painting. With examples on display, Small Worlds will enlighten as well as delight.

The exhibition will be supported by a variety of lectures and events, including creative workshops, storytelling and handling collection sessions.

The exhibition will run from 9 May to 8 Nov 2015 and is free to visit with normal admission to the museum (Adult £9, Conc £7, Child £4, Group £6.50, Family £22).

his Spring Summer Wiltshire Music Centre launches its WMC Live in the Foyer series with two unique shows in the Foyer / Bar performance space. On Saturday 11th April (7.30pm) the innovative 5-piece, East London collective Firefly Burning showcases its bold new album 'Skeleton Hill' with an informal, intimate performance of minimalist, cinematic folk. Full of close vocal harmonies, intricate rhythms and eastern textures, this 'utterly hypnotic music' (Matchbox Magazine) evokes the sounds of the Beach Boys, Sufjan Stevens and Steve Reich.

Firefly Burning precedes its evening show with a SingerSongwriter's Workshop (Saturday

11th April, 2pm – 4pm), a fun, friendly and practical exploration of the songwriting process, with members of the band exploring different approaches to songwriting and improvisation.

Workshop participants then guest in the evening concert.

The second WMC Live in the Foyer performance marks the Wiltshire debut of The Night Shift: Classical Music Minus The Rules (Friday 24th April, 8.30pm), London's ground-breaking late-night classical music night.

The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, one of the world's foremost period instrument ensembles, presents great classical music in a laid-back and relaxed setting, minus all the usual rules

– you can drink and applaud whenever you want, the bar stays open throughout, and it's standing room only. Fantastic great fun... classical music like never before.

The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment returns to the Centre the following day (Saturday 25th April, 7.30pm) with Watercycle, a very special community celebration of waterinspired music. Bradford on Avon Bridge Club is starting a new initiative aimed at anyone who likes playing cards but has never played Bridge before: lessons for beginners.

National Trust stars in BBC’s Wolf Hall

hen the BBC’s lavish drama Wolf Hall hits the screen on Wednesday 21 January, eagle-eyed viewers may spot a record five National Trust places in the South West taking centre stage in this new six-part series.

Filming for Wolf Hall took place entirely on location in the UK last summer, and it is adapted for the BBC from the award-winning novels by Hilary Mantel, Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies. The drama charts the meteoric rise of Thomas Cromwell in the Tudor court, from his lowly start as a blacksmith’s son to Henry VIII’s closest advisor. Mark Rylance stars as Thomas Cromwell and Damian Lewis as Henry VIII, and Wolf Hall starts on 21 January at 9pm on BBC Two. The five National Trust places in the South West that feature in the drama are Montacute House and Barrington Court in Somerset, Lacock Abbey and Great Chalfield

Montacute House, Somerset – in Wolf Hall the Elizabethan mansion represents Greenwich Palace, Henry VIII’s main London seat and the site of Anne Boleyn’s arrest. Montacute’s extensive grounds provided a spectacular backdrop to jousting sequences and hosted the dazzling Royal Tent.

Montacute House is open to the public most days during the winter, and every day from March through to the end of October. Following the dissolution of the monasteries, Henry VIII sold Lacock to Sir William Sharington, one of his courtiers, who converted it into a house. Lacock Abbey is open to the public all year round. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/lacock Great Chalfield Manor and Garden, Wiltshire – a moated manor built between 1465 and 1480 for Thomas Tropenell, a modest member of the landed gentry who made his fortune as a clothier. While filming on location at Montacute, Producer Mark Pybus said: “When we first saw Montacute we were immediately excited about both the rooms and the beautiful grounds.

“The advantages of filming in a historic location are massive. It’s more expensive than filming in a studio or abroad, but you don’t get that sense of authenticity that you do in a building like Montacute.

The National Trust has been very supportive and around 40% of our overall shoots have been at Trust places.”

The trade show and food fair, A Local Larder; Bradford on Avon & Beyond, will help build the South West's growing reputation for quality and local food and drink. As well as introducing local trade buyers to the people who produce the goods, the event will also invite the public along in the early evening. There will be opportunities to meet the producers, hear their stories and taste the products; discover outlets that stock or create menus around them; collect your Crowd Funder rewards; to shop and have an enjoyable evening.

A year with...

Matthew Briddon, Head Chef Old Manor Hotel, Trowbridge Matthew has spent the last year getting to grips with how best to use the land around the hotel to produce ingredients for the restaurant. Every season is beautiful at the Old Manor Hotel and Matthew has been making the most of them in the kitchen garden. There have been a few trial and errors but the kitchen garden has flourished producing heritage carrots, beets and squashes.

The smoke house has produced some of the best hay smoked salmon in Wiltshire. With two lovely Gloucester Old Spots and chickens on the way, it’s shaping up to be a rather impressive small holding.

Matt says “It’s been an unbelievable year at The Old Manor. We have produced far more from the land then we thought. The shop we opened last year has been packed to the rafters with jams, pickles, mustards and honey from the bee hives.

This year we are getting rare breed chickens to offer super fresh eggs for breakfast that our guests can hand pick. Our cookery school launches in spring to teach people about smoking and curing meat and fish, which is something I am very passionate about.”

Winter Warmers CREAMY PUMPKIN SOUP Serves 4

Preparation time 20 minutes Cooking time 30 minutes INGREDIENTS 1oz of butter 1 large onion - peeled and roughly chopped 2lb (small) pumpkin - peeled, deseeded and diced 1 large Carrot – peeled and chopped 1 large potato - peeled and chopped 2 or 3 Sticks of celery – washed and chopped one and a half pints of chicken or vegetable stock (or good quality vegetable bouillon, with a stock cube added) half a pint of double cream 1tsp of ground nutmeg

METHOD Melt the butter in a large saucepan and add the onions, cook on a low heat until the onions become transparent. Do not let them become brown. This will make the soup taste bitter.

Add all other vegetables, and cook on a low heat for around 5 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent burning at the bottom.

Pour in the Vegetable Bullion and the stock cube, and stir. Turn up the heat, and once boiling reduce the heat and simmer the vegetables for about 25 minutes, until nice and soft. Remove from heat.

Puree with an electric whisk and season with salt and pepper to taste, and add the ground nutmeg.

Add the cream and return it to the heat to gently warm through. (If your soup is too thick you can add some more stock or bouillon.)

Pour in to a soup dish and top with a little cream, some toasted pumpkin seeds and chopped chives.

Serve with Sticky Spicy Sausages on the side, and homemade crusty bread and local butter.

Bath Mum Battles Ill Health To Take On Indian Adventure For RUH Cancer Care

Bath mum Debbie Saffin, who over the years has suffered on-going ill health, is taking on a challenge of a life time. In October 2015 Debbie will put on her walking boots to hike the Himalayas and discover the spiritual home of the Dalai Lama as part of The Forever Friends Appeal’s India trekking team. By taking on this incredibly physical challenge, Debbie will be stepping firmly outside her comfort zone.

She will be fundraising for the Royal United Hospital’s Cancer Care Campaign to say thank you for caring for her over a number of years.

Having spent much time as a patient at the RUH, she explains: “I am also doing this trek to say a huge thank you to the RUH for their support over many years, which has enabled me to conquer my ill health instead of it conquering me. They have not just saved my life from a close to death experience, but they 42

continued to help me. They have been extremely caring, supportive and understanding, and always willing to answer any questions and to give advice. I couldn’t have hoped for a better team of people to be there not just for me, but also my family. I have also lost a loved one from cancer and therefore appreciate how much this Centre will benefit our community. I can’t think of a better way to say thank you than to help raise funds for this new Centre. I know I will find this challenge extremely difficult, but none the less I remain determined to complete this trek for the benefit of others.”

The RUH Cancer Care Campaign is currently over half way to achieving its aim of raising £8.5 million, which will contribute vital funds to the building of a pioneering new Cancer Centre for the Royal United Hospital in Bath.

Living life to the full with a progressive condition

T

here are many progressive neurological conditions where the effects are felt more acutely as people get older.

One such condition is Multiple Sclerosis (MS) that affects around 100,000 people in the UK with roughly three times as many women as men affected.

As with so many progressive neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimers, MS has no known cause and no cure. Unlike Parkinson’s and Alzheimer, MS is usually diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40 and so people with MS are often living with the condition for most of their adult lives. In most cases, the symptoms 44

of MS gradually get worse over time so that older people have a sustained build-up of disability, variously affecting their mobility, balance, dizziness, sight, memory, fatigue, bladder problems and stiffness and/or spasms.

Blue Sky Enabling’s case histories show that when someone is provided with their own team of enablers they are able to overcome their disabilities to continue living life to the full.

ANN’S STORY (by kind permission) Ann has lived with MS for over 32 years. She says, “MS has affected every aspect of my life.

For years I kept it at bay but now it has progressed. It’s awful, very

frustrating. I can’t do what I want to do. It’s harder to control my left side of my body as it is weaker than the right side.”

For many years Ann was able to manage with support from her husband. Even though she had MS, from 1992-2001 Ann travelled 8 times to an ashram in India, with a group or with friends to see the Indian guru Sathya Sai Baba, and has published a collection of diary notes based on her trips there and elsewhere entitled ‘Keep On Keeping On’. Of her trips to India, Ann says, “They were the best things that ever happened to me.”

Ann now has a team of highly qualified and experienced enablers who work with her to get her up in the mornings and to bed at night, assist with the administration of her medications and all personal care. Personal presentation is important to Ann. After a recent visit from her home hairdresser, Ann commented, “I feel more able to face the world now!”

Most importantly, Ann’s carers enable her to pursue activities that matter to her and enable her to live a full and active life despite the progression of her condition. Ann is determined to do everything she can to maintain her flexibility and body health. As well as home based exercises, Blue Sky Enabling’s staff enable Ann to go to a Tai Chi class for older people where she is able to join in as an equal member of the class. “I go to my Tai Chi class every Friday, and shopping afterwards in Bath.

I have my favourite shops, Neal’s Yard, Café Nero and Waitrose. I am very happy to be going to the Little Theatre Cinema with my most constant carer, Tina, and I have booked some concerts with Tina and am going out for lunch

with the MS group.”

e never know when we will need first aid skills - it could be in the middle of the night when a wife, husband or elderly relative is having breathing difficulties, it could be coming across a person having an epileptic seizure in the town centre or seeing a football player collapse on the local soccer field. After a short first aid course you will be far more knowledgeable on the correct actions required, far more confident in your abilities and far more able to give safe and effective treatment. First aid courses act as a kind of insurance policy. You learn new skills and are prepared to use them but hopefully you never have to use them. There are, of course, times when simple treatments are necessary such as when minor bleeds and

wounds occur either at work, play or at home. Again some simple first aid training will make prepare you to treat and administer assistance in these cases. Courses are available for the workplace, including schools, shops, cafes and industrial sites, to families and sports clubs covering a range of subjects from First Aid at Work to Paediatric First Aid and Outdoor Activity First Aid. As well as first aid there are also one day Fire Awareness and Safety Awareness courses, First Aid at Work requalification, First Responders, Anaphylaxsis Awareness and Risk Assessment in the workplace courses available. With the rise in the availability of defibrillators in town centres we can also provide a training package to

train for CPR and defibrillator use in the community.

MeadgateSC is accredited to First Aid Awards ( www.firstaidawards. co.uk) for the delivery of all courses and they act as the Awarding Body ensuring that course content is correct and relevant, course instructors are up to standard and all examinations have been correctly assessed.
