welcome

W

elcome to the sunshine! It’s beautifully hot whilst we put this edition to bed. The sunshine is a glimmer of hope following incidents of Manchester. We join the rest of the country and unite in our support to all the families involved. We extend thanks to all the emergency services and those who helped, and will continue to do so, over the coming months. This gives anyone a reason to be thankful. Our local elections saw a radical change to the make-up of the town council where IDEAL’ Bradford, the new Independent Group, secured 10 out of the 12 seats, leaving just 2 for the Liberal Democrats. We welcome David Garwood, our new Mayor and are encouraged by his positive plans. There are, of course more elections to follow. If you are looking for something summery to do with the family, then our What’s On and Highlight section will give you some inspiration. A good one not to miss is the Sculpture Garden 24-26 July. Get yourself into the woods for creative workshops for grownups in Bath, try Bowls or Qi Gong, plus many more. A Local Life got up close with Martin Clunes, OBE, as he officially opened Julia’s House Children’s Hospice in Devizes on 6th May. The centre is purpose built to provide care and support to children and their families with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition. In Food & Drink, we have veg inspiration, barbeque heaven and celebration of Venison so there really is something to suit all tastes. In our next edition, in keeping with support of all things independent, we have a 'Shambles' special feature. This will celebrate the history and the street that it is today. Also not forgetting everything BoA – we are really looking forward to the BoA Arts festival in September. So, grab something cold and enjoy the weather! We look forward to seeing you next issue. Rare Guitars from Mark Haydn Griffiths

C

oming up for sale on June 15th is a Collection of guitars and related items by Mark Haydn Griffiths. Mark Haydn Griffiths was born and educated in Northampton, England. At school, his only real interests were sports and music. His father encouraged him and bought him his first guitar and it soon replaced sport as the most important thing in his life. He left school at fifteen after being offered a job teaching guitar to young students at the Northampton Guitar Studios. Listening to many different guitarists, such as Lonnie Mack, Hank Garland, Chet Atkins, Johnny Smith and Hank Marvin, Mark’s musical tastes and influences grew ever wider. Most evenings and weekends were taken up playing with hometown groups, until the offer came to join Harsh Reality, a blues/rock group signed to Phillips records. They made one album (‘Heaven & Hell’) that disappeared without trace. The producer of that album (Fritz

Mark, live with the Shadows

Fryer) recommended Mark on to other artists and through those connections, he was asked to join Matthew’s Southern Comfort on lead guitar. Their MCA recording of Joni Mitchell’s ‘Woodstock’ became a world-wide hit reaching number one in the U.K. In 1972, on Mark’s first ever U.S. tour, he got hooked by the groundbreaking album ‘What’s Going On’ by Marvin Gaye. The bass parts, by the late, great James Jamerson, inspired him to take up the bass virtually overnight. This move to bass, almost eclipsed his guitar playing for the majority of his career. Mainly known as a bassist, he has now rediscovered his love for the guitar and now splits his playing time between the two instruments.

QUALITY ENTRIES ARE NOW INVITED FOR SUMMER SPECIALIST AUCTIONS GUITARS - 15TH JUNE

Since those early days, some of the artists Mark has recorded and toured with include ... Al Stewart, The Everly Brothers, Sonny Curtis, Duane Eddy, David Essex, Mark Knopfler, Tom Hall, Bonnie Tyler, Mike Berry, Billy Connolly, Deniece Williams, Jeff Lynne, Neil Innes, The Rutles, John Verity, The Ginger Pigs, Dobie Gray, Willy Russell, Bill Perry, Gallagher & Lyle, Nina Hagen, Dennis Loccoriere, Iain Matthews, Peter Frampton, 3 Boxes, Plainsong, Any Trouble and Sir Cliff Richard. Mark has been The Shadows and guitar legend Hank Marvin’s regular bassist, for many years. We are delighted to offer for sale Mark’s personal guitars and related items, many of which he used as tools of his trade.

scratching their nose! But there is a quiet revolution taking place in Wiltshire as Wessex Auction Rooms, co-owned by Bradford on Avon resident Tim Weeks, are quickly changing this opinion.

The Only Way Is Wessex A modern approach to antiques is dispelling the myth of the ‘stuffy saleroom’…

I

t is often said that ‘everyone loves an auction’. However so many of us have never experienced the thrill of auction in person. Why is this? Auction houses are often thought of as being unapproachable and intimidating environments where people are scared to move their hands in the fear that they accidentally bid on a £10,000 vase while

Tim says “We do things differently at Wessex because we like dealing with people. We have a young yet experienced team of auctioneers and valuers who want to make a difference and want to change the industry for the better. There is a new order taking place in antiques and I think here at Wessex Auction Rooms we are perfectly placed to take full advantage of this and offer our customers - both sellers and buyers alike, a service not offered anywhere else.” Tim has grown up in the industry and has seen the need for the auction world to modernise its approach first hand. He goes on to add “I am a traditionalist, make no mistake, but you have to evolve

and move with the times and the auction world has been left behind for 10 or 20 years now. That’s where Wessex Auction Rooms come in. The antiques world is, in my opinion, the most exciting, vibrant and interesting industry in which one can work or be involved in. You never know what you will see when you visit someone’s house, or whenever someone walks into the saleroom. This needs to be communicated to the world and we are going to be the ones that do it.” So whether you are an experienced auction goer or looking to make your first steps into the auction world, a trip to Wessex Auction Rooms should be on the cards. IGNITE YOUR ARTISTIC SIDE

A

re you the sort of person who hasn’t picked up a paint brush since school? As a ‘cave dweller’, this is not my normal night out, however I was amazed at what I found! The Paint Republic at The Boathouse, Bradford on Avon, welcomed me on a nostalgic evening. Starting with a few drinks to relax, before meeting

professional artist Lindsey Burgess. Lindsey was inspirational; she will ignite the artistic side in anyone, even if you think you have none. I’d definitely recommend this relaxed class, to go alone or with a friend for a night out with a difference.

Let the Soapbox Battle commence! Dorothy House launches Amy Williams Derby

D

orothy House Hospice Care launches a Soapbox Derby charity event, held on 9th July starting at 11am, in Victoria Park, Bath, with the support of Olympic Gold Medallist, Amy Williams.

Raising funds for the Hospice, the local business community is challenged to join the ‘Soapbox Battle’ by signing up a team or sponsoring an obstacle on the course. Competitors can bring friends and families along to watch. A fun ‘Time Trial’ will be available on the day for £3 p/p in a specially designed cart by Lansdown Mazda, similar to Top Gear's “reasonably priced family saloon”. The exciting milestone coincides with the charity’s Airbase Appeal raising over £251,000, meaning

Mrs Troughton said: “I was delighted to be part of the next phase in the Wiltshire Air Ambulance charity’s history. Wiltshire Air Ambulance has been saving lives for 27 years and this wonderful custom-built airbase will enable the charity to continue its vital work. “Its central location means the helicopter can reach all parts of the county in 11 minutes. The charity still needs to raise further funds to finish the project. My grateful thanks go to those who have generously contributed so far.”

A R E YO U P R E PA R E D F O R T H E CHANGES AHEAD?

The United Kingdom’s vote to leave the European Union brings a 43year association to its end. Parts of the transition period are likely to continue to be volatile for investors, and markets will not be fully at ease until there is more certainty about the timing and nature of the UK’s exit, and the details of its future trading agreements are known. Global markets have been turbulent since the referendum, while the pound has come under pressure, and there

is no denying that the Brexit result will continue to create disruption in the short term. But putting aside the recent volatility and taking a longterm view will help people plan more confidently for the future. What’s your favourite health tip?

What’s happening TV wise for you next? I am just filming the next series of Doc Martin. Some great story lines coming up and yes, I am my usual grumpy self before you ask…

How do you relax and unwind?

Eat less, move more for good health – use it or loose it, that’s my motto. Eat well, find something you love to do out in the fresh air, go see what’s out there, it’s the best tonic around.

Tell me about your horses?

"Eat well, find

artin Clunes, well known for his TV appearances in Men Behaving Badly and more recently the grumpy village doctor in Doc Martin, which is set in the beautiful Cornwall village of Port Isaac.

I immerse myself in my Dorset farm, we’ve just had 170 lambs born, which keeps me very busy. It’s a way of unwinding from a busy schedule to get out in the fresh air and be with my family.

Do you ‘do’ social media? No. Not at all! There are a few facebook accounts claiming to be me, but they aren’t. I like to just live and not have to tell the world about it.

18

If anyone had told me 15 years ago that I would have my own farm, and be driving a cart pulled by two Clydesdales, I would have laughed in their face. I just didn’t see it coming. Ronnie and Bruce, our two Clydesdale shire horses, are like two loveable but uncontrollable teenagers firmly rooted in our family. We bring them to the Buckham Fair each year for those who’d like to meet them.

Why Julia’s House? Around 15 years ago I was on holiday and met a couple who said this was their first family holiday in 24 years! They had a disabled son and had no support as a family, they had other children to consider too, and found it tremendously hard to get away or do everyday things that we all take for granted. Around the same time I received a letter from CEO Martin Edwards of Julia’s House Charity asking to discuss the Dorset Julia’s House Project. This family I met on holiday were in the forefront of my mind. So I said yes, lets do this ... and became a Patron. The rest is history!

Martin was honoured as Patron of Julia’s House Children’s Hospice to open their Devises sites, on 6th May 2017. A £2m state of the art purpose built centre to provide valuable support to those families who have children from 0-18yrs with a life threatening or life limiting condition. The centre provides support to not just the child concerned, but the whole family, they run respite care and day support in their state of the

art centre as well as providing home-care, for mums, dads, siblings and even grandparents. If you would like to know how you can help do your bit, Julia’s House would be delighted to hear from you. They are always looking for volunteers who can help out with a smile!

Which is your favourite room in the centre? I think it has to be the garden, there’s no place they can’t go. The flowers and sensory plants, all carefully chosen to provide the best sensory experience to the wheelchair trampoline, everything has been thought of to keep life as normal as possible.

Julia’s House Open Day Thursday 15 June – 11am to 3pm A charity dedicated to supporting children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions living in Dorset and Wiltshire. The majority of these children are unlikely to live into adulthood. To book in for a tour please call 01980 677105 or email wiltshire@juliashouse.org.

Turmeric and ginger are antiinf lammatory and good for digestion, as is coconut oil. Organic coconut oil is available to order alongside our veg boxes; it’s great for stir-fries and curries, or for roasting veg.

Serves 2

Spring Green and Coconut Dal A colourful and healthy meal

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

1 tbsp coconut oil

Melt the coconut oil in a large pan. Add the onion and fry on a low heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Turn up the heat a little and add the garlic, ginger, chilli, mustard seeds and turmeric. Stir for about 1 minute, until you hear the mustard seeds start to pop. Stir the coconut milk in the can then pour into the pan with the lentils and ground coriander and cumin. Fill the coconut milk can half full with water and add that too. Bring up to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for about 15 minutes. Add the greens, stirring in small handfuls at a time, then cook for a further 5–10 minutes, until the lentils are tender and the greens wilted. Keep an eye on the liquid and add more water if needed. Season the dal with salt, stir in the fresh coriander and add a squeeze of lime or lemon juice to taste. Serve the dal sprinkled with toasted coconut and a few extra coriander leaves.

1 onion, finely sliced 1 large or 2 small garlic cloves, finely chopped, grated or crushed 4cm piece of fresh ginger, peeled and finely grated 1 red chilli, finely sliced 1 tsp black mustard seeds ¼ tsp ground turmeric 1 x 400ml tin coconut milk 100g yellow mung dal lentils, rinsed in a sieve 1 tsp coriander seeds, toasted and ground 1 tsp cumin seeds, toasted and ground 200g spring or summer greens, tough ribs removed, leaves finely shredded Handful of coriander leaves A squeeze of lime or lemon juice Toasted coconut chips or toasted desiccated coconut, to garnish Salt

24

VARIATIONS •• Use red lentils if you can’t find yellow mung dal lentils. •• Use cabbage, spinach or chard instead of the greens. •• Add a ‘tarka’, a spicy oil, to sprinkle on the top of the dal before serving for an extra kick of spice and chilli: gently heat a tablespoon of coconut oil in a small pan then add 1 teaspoon each of black mustard seeds and cumin seeds, 1 finely sliced large garlic clove and a good pinch of chilli flakes and fry, stirring constantly, for 1–2 minutes until the mustard seeds are popping. Green Eggs and Ham ...well not just baked ham actually! The Sunday roast, the Christmas turkey, the bbq pulled pork, the paella, the smoked beef brisket, the flame grilled steaks, the stone-baked pizza. You name it, you can probably cook it on the Big Green Egg. If you’re into your cooking you will have probably seen the green eggs all over your TV screen in recent weeks with them being a favourite of the pros in Masterchef and Great British Menu. Well you can also try them for yourself at Hartley Farm Shop. In essence the Big Green Egg is a ceramic, charcoal fired oven and grill in one (it’s not just a barbecue!) and it lends itself perfectly to roasting, baking, smoking and grilling. Being built with high-grade ceramic it has incredible insulation which means you burn less fuel than normal barbecues and you

can cook for longer (we’ve cooked for over 16 hours in one go with no refuelling!). The natural lumpwood charcoal acts as a delicious, but subtle smokey seasoning for not just meat but for vegetables, stews, chilli con carne, pizzas and even bread. You can also add wood chips & chunks of your choice for that extra smokey kick. It’s the perfect partner for any alfresco chef enthusiast. For your own demonstration give the team at Hartley Farm Shop a call on 01225 864948 or drop them a line at hello@hartley-farm.co.uk. The eggs are lit most weekends and there are a few dishes from their new kitchen menu straight from the Big Green Egg so you can try for yourself!

LEGAL FEATURE

What happens if someone is unable to sign their Will? James Trescothick-Martin looks at the options available if someone is physically unable to sign a Will.

S

ometimes a Testator is unable to sign a Will for physical reasons. Although relatively uncommon it happens more often that you might think. However, it should be stressed that this is no bar to making a Will. As with so many areas of probate law, the rules regarding such situations originate from the Wills Act 1837, and case law dating back in some cases to the 19th Century. This Act states that:No will shall be valid unless— (a) it is in writing, and signed by the testator, or by some other person in his presence and by his direction; and (b) it appears that the testator intended by his signature to give effect to the will; and

(c) the signature is made or acknowledged by the testator in the presence of two or more witnesses present at the same time; and (d) each witness either— (i) attests and signs the will; or (i) acknowledges his signature, in the presence of the testator (but not necessarily in the presence of any other witness), but no form of attestation shall be necessary. Over the years best practice has been that, although not being strictly required, any Will not signed by the Testator but at their direction should include an attestation clause to reflect this fact. In fact the Law Society of England and Wales publishes specific guidance to solicitors on this area. The person signing the Will on someone else’s

behalf must do so in the Testator’s presence and obviously at their express direction. Also, just as if the Testator were signing, the two required witnesses must also be present when the Testator confirms that the signature on the Will was made at his direction. In addition the word ‘signature’ has been interpreted widely to include a simple mark or part of the Testator’s name, the testator’s initials (Goods of Savoy [1851] 15 Jur 1042) or their thumb print (Re Finn [1935] 52 TLR 153). There have even been cases approving a seal (Re Emerson [1882] 9 L.R.I.r. 443). If you or someone you know needs assistance in executing their Will, then instructing a qualified solicitor with extensive experience and training in this area can mean the difference between a Will being accepted for probate, or rejected.
