Pre-Summer Events and Fiestas

pril 2012 seems to have been a month of almost continuous winds. There were several “orange” alerts, put out by the Spanish Meteorological Office, and high winds affected some of the Easter processions. Many towns and villages in southern Almería experienced major earth tremors on April 18th that took place throughout the day. A mobile seismic investigation vehicle was consequently sent to Roquetas to char t events over the following days. Apart from the various cultural and concert dates in May, Sunday, May 6th is Spanish “Mothering Sunday”, always the first Sunday in May. Throughout the month, Sundays are marked by the “first communion” (primera comunión) for young children and following these church events there are celebration meals. If you visit a Spanish restaurant or hotel for Sunday lunch in May you may well see this, with bridesmaid-type dresses and sailor suits. Tuesday, May 15th is the fiesta day of San Isidro, a farmer who it is believed to have died in Madrid in 1172. He became famous for charitable acts for the poor and needy. In Madrid, this is a big event, a full fiesta day’s holiday and residents of Madrid (Madrileños) often come to places such as Almería province for a break before summer. As this year it is a Tuesday, many people will take the Monday off as well. If they come here for the weekend until Tuesday it will be known as a Oxen taking part in a Romería

“puente”, literally a “bridge”, when a non-fiesta day is made into a holiday before or between the real fiesta days. Towns and villages throughout Spain usually have two patron Saint’s days during the year that are local fiesta days. Many of these take place in spring or summer when the weather is better. San Isidro is one of the patron saints for Mojácar, Los Gallardos, Huércal-Overa, Sorbas, Turre, Tabernas and Tíjola. The fiesta events usually involve a “Romeria”, a journey with decorated farm vehicles, lorries and carts that set off into an area of the countryside. After food and drink there may be a short religious service, and in the evening, dances, concerts or other festivities in the local squares or “plazas”. Tíjola is famous for including a gypsy event with decorated horses. Expect town halls, banks and offices to be shut on Tuesday, 15th May locally where San Isidro is a patron saint, but not everywhere. In some places, the religious events may be carried over to the following Sunday, May 19th, but in 2012, “Ascension Day”, the last day of the Easter period when Christians believe Jesus went up to heaven 40 days after Easter Sunday, is Thursday, May 17th. This religious commemoration is always carried forward to the following Sunday, so this year, May 19th as well. June 13th is the fiesta day of San Antonio de Padua (Saint Anthony of Padua) who is a patron saint of Carboneras, Vera and Vélez Blanco. Saint Anthony was a Franciscan priest and teacher who died in 1231, and is the patron saint of things “lost or stolen”. These local fiestas will take place from the June 9th/10th weekend until June 13th in some cases. The weekend nearest June 10th is traditionally the date for the Mojácar “Moors & Christians” fiesta, but this has been put off this year until the following weekend of June 15th17th. The Mojácar village underground car park has been promised to have been finished for the fiestas. If it’s not finished in time it will be mayhem.

This figure is however slightly less than the national average, where the drop has been 3.4%. Carboneras prices have shown a slight rise, but the figure per m2 in Almerimar and Mojácar stands at 1,697 euros. The average price in Almería city is stated to be 1,653 euros per m2. Pulpí Freight Station Pulpí town hall are collecting signatures for a petition urging that the ‘AVE’ (High speed train) project includes a freight station. They have joined forces with Aguilas and are pressing for a container link at Pulpí than can handle the large amounts of lettuce and other products that are produced in the area. They are seeking the backing of the European pressure group, ‘Ferrmed’, who strongly advocate the ‘AVE’ construction, both for passengers and goods. Granules of Mosquito Treatment

Know Your Number? People going to Almería city centre during peak hours and parking in “blue zones” now have to obtain their street parking receipt from new machines. One of the requirements when putting details into the machine to obtain your ticket is that you have to enter the registration number of your vehicle. This is because if you select a parking receipt for the maximum of 2 hours you then have to move zones to extend your parking. The machine uses your registration number to stop “meter feeding”. Many motorists are finding that putting a registration number in is difficult as they can’t remember, or don’t know it if it is a hire car. A good tip is to enter your vehicle number in your mobile ‘phone directory. There are 2,400 parking places available, and you can select the English language option at the ticket machine for instructions if you wish.

Huércal-Overa Motor Homes Over Easter week, Huércal-Overa became home to 70 motor caravans. This was an experiment with the help of the Murcia Association of motor caravan owners. The Thursday market and open air concert area was made available with electricity and water

New Mosquito Treatment ‘Laboritorios Lokímica S.A.’ have been busy in Mojácar, Garrucha and Vera using a new method of treatment against summer mosquitoes. The treatment involves dropping granules from a helicopter that then activate with rain or surface water. The granules are biological and have no effects on plants, animals and humans. The use of a helicopter to dispense this treatment is more effective than the previous use of a liquid sprayed from vehicles, as a helicopter can cover a greater area and go where vehicles cannot gain access. This use of a helicopter is common in Florida in the US, where other methods are not practicable. Once activated, the biological treatment kills any larvae.

Tabernas Model Planes There is still controversy surrounding the model aeroplane airstrip at Tabernas. Initially work was stopped after Tabernas town hall decided that the format of the proposed site was not in accordance with the project details. Neighbours adjacent to the site have formed a pressure group and claim that some of the aircraft have a wing span of over 4

Almería Historic Monuments Visitors to the Almería city castle in 2011 amounted to 160,000 people, some 12,000 less than in 2010. 70% made their own way to the castle with the remainder taking part in organized visits. The Los Millares archaeological site at Santa Fe de Mondújar continues to be an attraction with 14,000 tourists going to this site, some 1,800 more than in 2010. The Vélez Blanco castle attracted 21,500 visits, 2,000 down from 2010 figures, and the vast majority of tourists chose to visit over weekends.

Prostitution Ring Broken Four people including a Spanish and Russian couple have been arrested for forcing women from Vladivostok and Volgrado in Russia to become prostitutes after they were tempted to come to the Almería areas of Vicar and Aguadulce with the promise of normal employment. A travel agency in Volgrado was the spearhead of the operation in Russia. Special regulations are applicable to women who have been victims of human trafficking and they can apply for a residents’ permit, or request repatriation to their country of origin. They are also given protected witness status in any criminal proceedings against the organizers of such prostitution rings.

Port Traffic 2012 has started off as being a good year for port activity in Almería and Carboneras. In November 2009, the Israeli company ‘ZIM’ started a regular weekly container vessel operation from Almería port and in the first 3 months of 2012 they increased the container traffic some 90% over the same period in 2011. Some 80,000 passengers were recorded in the same period, that used Almería port ferries to Morocco or North Africa. Carboneras port is also experiencing a 50% increase in the movement of ‘yeso’, wood and marble trade. The aim of the port authority has been to earmark Almería as a container

‘Cosentino’ Help The multinational company ‘Grupo Cosentino’ based in Cantoria, is world famous for their ‘Silestone’ worktops and export such products to over 60 countries, with 2,200 employees world wide. As a “solidarity gesture” they have donated 1,000 m2 of different types of marble flooring to the San Mateo church in Lorca. This famous church was very badly damaged in the Lorca earthquake in May 2011 and has needed major restoration. The church floor, apart from the structure, was almost totally destroyed. It is hoped that the church can be reopened in July.

Green Fuel Not many Spanish companies are announcing major expansion plans, but ‘Biocarburos de Almanzora’ is one of the exceptions. This company known by the shortened name of ‘Biocarsa’ has at present four “bio” fuel vehicle fill-up points and produces 6,000 tonnes a year. Their managing director, José Cano,

Focus on Local News continued states that in this area there is a large hole in the market and over the next few years they plan to open 20 new filling stations, increase production to 20,000 tonnes per year and a turnover of 100 million euros. This expansion has a budget of 9 million euros and an increased labour force of over 100 persons. The bio-diesel refinery is situated at Cuevas del Almanzora and the main component of the fuel is a mixture of re-cycled and new vegetable oil. They first started production in 2008 and have a biodiesel fuel station in Vera, near the “red cross” (Cruz roja) centre.

Ana Mato, the government health minister, announced that she plans to cut 1,000 million euros from “tourist health” bills, by changing Spanish law. She suggests that people who have health rights in their country of origin should not be able to register on the ‘padrón’ (the official register of municipal residents), obtain the Spanish EU health card, and then use the card for treatment in their “home” country with the bills coming back to Spain.

Almería Orchestra Venue Michael Thomas, the famous conductor of the Almería city orchestra and choir, was recently asked to perform with the Almería Young Persons Orchestra in Cádiz, as part of the bicentenary celebrations of the 1812 Constitution. Apart from this, he also conducted the young persons orchestra specially formed for the constitution celebrations from the Cádiz area.

New Roadside Tests

The British Embassy in Madrid, in conjunction with UK Foreign Office, has issued a comprehensive guide to healthcare in Spain, and the rights of persons such as students, workers, retired persons (including those with a second home in Spain) and tourists. The guide considers that public healthcare in Spain is in many cases better than that obtained by private medical insurance. The guide also explains how tourists who have medical conditions that “cannot wait until they return home” can access the Spanish health service. This last category is somewhat controversial in Spain as many such requests include operations for cataracts, hip and knee replacement operations, and tumour treatment. In Alicante, it is considered that there are 100,000 British people with a second home, and 800,000 patients have treatment at a cost to the Spanish health service of 15 million euros, not all of which can be re-claimed from the UK. The Spanish health service is at present going through an austerity exercise with cuts being made in services, and medical treatment for Europeans is considered to be an area where that needs pruning, particularly for tourists. Selected Guardia Civil traffic police are now able to require that a motorist must submit to not just a breathalyzer test for alcohol, but also a roadside test for drugs. These tests follow on from an alcohol test and the driver is asked to provide a saliva specimen, tested on the spot with a portable analyzer. This initial test will then indicate if drugs such as cannabis or cocaine are present. The traffic officer then has to decide if the driver shows outward signs of being under the influence of drugs (apart from alcohol) and if this is the case, a second saliva sample is required, but this sample is then sealed and submitted to a laboratory for detailed analysis. The detection of drugs following the laboratory test is sent to the traffic police with recommendations as to the severity of the drug and type, and consequent sanctions. Legal sanctions include community service, a prison sentence of 3-6 months, and loss of licence for severe cases. A fine of 500 euros and a loss of 6 driving points can occur for lesser levels. Bee Theft

‘La Plataforma Solar’, the experimental solar and electricity complex at Tabernas, recently was host to senior government ministers from India. India has a renewable energy plan that proposes that by 2022 they will produce 22,000 megawatts of power, and 1,000 megawatts by 2013. Asian banks are funding these projects including technical assistance. This visit followed visits from technicians and academics who wished to see at first hand how the Tabernas investigations and achievements could be applied to India. It is anticipated that Spanish companies, including some in Almería province, will be invited to tender for this work.

Bee keepers in Almería province are expecting a bad year for the production of honey owing to the lack of rain so far. To add to their problems, there is an increasing number of thefts of bees from hives. People stealing bees may leave part of the hive and the stolen bees are then introduced to a new queen bee in another location. This is a problem that has started up in Almería province as well as Granada and Murcia. There are 250 professional bee keepers and 900 amateurs that in a good year can produce more than 2 million kilos of honey from the estimated 140,000 hives in Almería province. Bees are also used for distributing pollen in the cultivation of melons. So far this year, a number of people have been charged with stealing bees or hives, but the previous ownership of stolen bees is a difficult task. The Almería association of bee keepers, ‘Asaja-Almería’, is asking that all beekeepers must put identification numbers on their hives and in the case of professional bee keepers, their registration number as well.

Junta Debts

Juan López Camacho, mayor of Lubrin in 2005, has been given a prison term of 20 months, and banned from holding any political office for 10 years. In 2005, he gave an illegal licence for an agricultural storage unit. The land was not zoned for urban development and had special protection status as it was part of the Sierra de los Filabres. The size of the agricultural building did not comply with current planning approval, so had been denied by the town hall and the Almería planning authority. Following on, the project was changed by the applicant to a private house of 150 m2, and this house was built. Juan López then personally signed a certificate of “first occupation” necessary for the connection of water and electricity, although only the council secretary was authorised to sign such a declaration. The court considered that this document was a “mendaz”, (completely false and a lie). The technical director of the project was also given a prison sentence of 6 months, and is banned for another 6 months from similar official activity. The owner of the property, who knew it was completely illegal from the start, was jailed for 6 months also. The technical director and the owner are confirmed to be jointly responsible for the cost of the complete demolition that is stated to be some 12,000 euros. Juan López narrowly avoided a longer prison term after it was accepted that the certificate of “first occupation” was not strictly legally an offence in his capacity as major, because no mayor is authorised to sign such certificates. These High Court rulings followed an appeal against conviction in a lower court, and will be enforced.

Councils and autonomous regions have been compiling a list of debts owing to providers of services. The government has arranged that 35,000 million euros will be made available to pay off these debts, and the money has to be repaid in the next 10 years at an interest rate of 5%. The Junta de Andalucía have unpaid bills amounting to 2,700 million euros as of January 1st this year. 5,000 companies are owed money and 97% of the debts apply to the provision of health services, including medicines. During 2012, government austerity measures mean that an almost identical amount of money has to be pruned from the 32,000 million budget approved last December.

Cuevas Unrest Opposition councillors in Cuevas del Almanzora are unhappy with the council budget. They claim money for cultural activities is being cut by 75%, and the School of Music will become a foundation with only 75,000 euros being made available towards the 200,000 euros running costs. Money for sport is being cut by 50% and 200,000 euros is earmarked for redundancy payments for 30 council workers who are being laid off. Ana Bélen Rodríguez, a socialist councillor, describes the budget as “cuts, more cuts, and nothing else”.

Olympic Archer José Manuel Marín from Almería gained the most points in a Madrid selection competition for Spanish archers. He will therefore compete in the London Olympics in the paraplegic archery competitions. José competed in the Athens and Peking Olympics where he won a distinguished mention diploma, but no medals. In 2009, he became world champion in the Czech Republic European archery competition. José states that the training has been very hard, but he wants to win an Olympic medal, ideally “gold”.

The first tremor took place at 9am continuing until noon when the largest quake of the day took place, and measured 4.2 on the Richter scale. The epicentre was 44 kms off the coast and 3 kms below the seabed. Another quake of 3.8 on the scale took place at 1pm at 10kms below the seabed. Roquetas, Adra, El Ejido and Almería all experienced these earth movements. No damage was reported and the Spanish Geology Institute stated that about 30 quakes and tremors had occurred throughout the day. Hotel Worries

The prosecution claims that all 8 people had a key role in the project and were aware that the land was not approved for urban construction, and the designs of the properties and boundaries were not suitable anyway. Alfonso García, president of the Almería city football team, is amongst those in the dock, but claims whilst he sold the developers the land he had nothing to do with the construction project. So Now You Know... Frozen Food Clarence Birdseye watched Inuit fisherman pulling fish out of a hole in the ice in Newfoundland in 1912. The fish froze as soon as they were caught. Clarence experimented with a “fast-freeze” process to stop fish being soggy when thawed out, a problem when tried before. He also froze vegetables as well. He set up a factory in 1924 but sold out to the ‘Postum Food Company’ in 1929 on condition the frozen products were labeled “Birds Eye” brand. Frozen food was initially slow to become popular, partly because it was displayed in the cabinets that were used to store ice cream! Traffic Lights The first traffic lights with red and green gas lit indicators were installed outside the House of Commons to make it easier for horse-drawn carriages belonging to MPs, to get inside. It was dismantled in 1872, some 22 years before the first cars were imported into the UK. Garrett Morgan, an American engineer, received a US award for safety when he “re-invented” traffic lights powered by electricity in 1914. He eventually applied for a US patent in 1922 but nobody else had thought traffic lights an idea that they should copy in the meantime. The amber “warning” light was introduced eventually, as a safety feature. Toothpaste Tubes Various substances have been used as toothpaste since Roman times. In 1841, an artist, John Rand, decided that toothpaste would be ideal in tubes like the ones he bought with oil paints. He improved the design and took out a patent. In 1892, an American dentist named Washington Sheffield set up a manufacturing plant to produce toothpaste in tubes in bulk. Beecham Products Ltd was the first company in the UK to start production of tubes of toothpaste, with a licence from the USA. By the end of the 20th century, plastic tubes replaced the metal ones that tended to split when rolled up.

Clocks The first recorded way of measuring time was the sundial. In 1088, a mechanical clock was built in China that only indicted the hour, not minutes. In 1577, a Swiss engineer, Jost Burgi produced a clock with a minute hand, but in 1675, clocks with a pendulum were invented. This proved a perfect way of regulating clocks and giving an accurate time. In 1929, a Canadian named Warren Marrison built a crystal controlled clock using a quartz crystal and this was highly acclaimed for accuracy. By 1948, atomic clocks were made and a “second” was defined as 1/86,400th of the time taken for the earth to rotate. Marathons Pheidippides was an ancient Greek who ran 22 miles without stopping from Marathon to Athens to announce a victory in battle. He is reputed to have gasped “Rejoice, we conquer”, and then dropped dead. In 1896, the first Olympic Games marathon was held to celebrate Pheidippides’ achievement, and another Greek, Spiridon Louis, was the winner. The distance of 26 miles 385 yards was officially recognized as “a marathon” in 1924. It was the distance from Windsor castle to the finish line inside the White City stadium in London. Marathons are now associated with fundraising for charity, as well as an athletic event. Telescopes Galileo is usually thought to have invented the telescope but he heard about the device from Hans Lippershey, a Flemish spectacle maker who demonstrated his invention in 1608. Galileo made his own improved version and used it to explore the heavens. The Church authorities were very upset when Galileo started publishing scientific papers and stated that the earth moved round the sun. They considered that the earth was the centre of the universe according to biblical studies and forced Galileo to publicly state he was wrong! He was reputed to have muttered under his breath, “But it does move”.

A High Risk Year

he specialist forest fire prevention and fire fighting unit for Almería province is getting very worried that 2012 is going to be a high risk year. The lack of rain and consequent dryness of scrubland and forest areas is causing real concern. The ‘INFOCA’ specialist unit work every year firstly on fire prevention plans that involve the treatment of forest and scrubland areas. In rural areas, local inhabitants are employed to clean firebreak areas, access roads and scrubland. The aim is to prevent fires spreading and part of the work involves the signposting of access roads so that firefighters know where they are going. A large fire often means that combined firefighting services are called in, often with no knowledge of the area. The high risk period is June 1st to October 15th, but this year from the middle of March, the controlled burning of agriculture residue and pasture land has been prohibited within 400 metres of a forest area.

The specialist units have fire engines, heavy equipment, communication vehicles, helicopters and fixed wing aircraft such as the ‘Air tractor 802’ that can carry 3,000 litres of fire resistant chemicals. The helicopter buckets can scoop up 10,000 litres of water, and available water deposits are carefully mapped. In coastal areas this often means that sea water is used, and port areas are favourite. The 80 fire specialists can call on other bodies to help, including civil defence, a total of 170 helpers in Almería province. In the event of a major fire they can also call on the ‘UME’. This ‘Unidad Militar de Emergencias’ is a specialist branch of the Spanish military and is a body almost unique to Spain. Set up in 2007, these units can be called out to severe flooding, events such as the Lorca earthquake, and major forest fires. In a recent forest fire in Galicia in a national park, 240 military specialists turned out with 100 small vehicles, and 18 specialist fire engines. In this case they came from León, but in Andalucía this unit is based in Seville. The weather is one of the problems for firefighters, and the term “30.30.30” is a danger signal. This relates to temperatures over 30 degrees, humidity below 30%, and wind over 30 km/hr. Firefighting is dangerous and a sudden change in wind direction can cause severe problems for firefighters on the ground, and helicopters cannot operate during night time hours.

Children of UK citizens are UK citizens themselves if their parents were born in the UK, not Spanish just because they were born in Spain, and you can obtain a passport for them. The hospital certificate enabled her parents to take her back to England, but there was no civil registration. The parents tried writing to their MP, who happened by coincidence to be Tony Blair. Then they tried writing to the Queen, but neither letter produced any solution. Eventually, an international firm of lawyers, Allen & Overy, decided that they would help. It took them four years, but pressure in Spain resulted in an Orihuela registry certificate issued in February this year, recording her birth in 1991! The Spanish authorities decided there were “exceptional circumstances”. Jade says that the UK authorities just didn’t want to know, and legally she did not exist. Jade is now aged 20, and hopes to be able to travel out of the UK, but says “Not to Spain!” If a child of UK parents is born ands grows up in Spain then between the ages of 18 and 19 they can apply for Spanish Nationality. The UK recognizes dual nationality, but Spain does not. A child born in Spain with a Spanish father is automatically entitled to Spanish citizenship, but nationality procedure is complicated and different for most countries. The important thing is to make sure that a birth is registered in Spain. Jade is now registered here as Jade Victoria Jacob Brooks, officially.

Some Dumb Crooks and More..! "He was trying to make his own fireworks,” says Bonnie Suchomski about her son, James Suchomski, 25, of Tampa, Fla. He and his friend Josh Edleman, 26, filled about 10 toy balloons with explosive acetylene gas, apparently with plans to ignite them to celebrate Independence Day. They put the balloons into Suchomski’s car, got in, and slammed the doors. A spark ignited the balloons, blowing up the car and throwing the two men out. (Reuters) When robbers confronted a convenience store clerk in Hazleton, Pa., he says he was able to recognize one of them because she was wearing her work shirt — it had a patch reading “Giant”, the grocery store where the clerk works. When the unidentified clerk commented on the shirt, the robber told him to hand over his money or “My husband will stab you.” The Giant store provided employee photos to police, and the victim immediately pointed to the one showing Colleen Fairchild. Joe Mongold, a vice squad detective for the Canton (Ohio) Police Department, was walking down the street in plain clothes after a court hearing when he passed Daniel Fornash. According to Mongold’s report, Fornash, a paroled felon who was carrying something in his hands, called out to him to say, “Would you believe I’m walking down the street in the middle of the day with this pot plant?” Mongold replied, “Would you believe I’m a cop?” Mongold said Fornash “just kind of looked at me. He said, ‘You’re not really a cop, are you?' I said, ‘Is that really a pot plant?’ He said, ‘Yes,’ and I said, ‘Yes, I’m really a cop’.” He arrested Fornash and confiscated the 5-foot plant. Health problems, a rare blood complaint known as “Wegener’s disease”, forced her to discontinue her pioneering work in Mojácar. Fortunately, ‘AnimoAlbero’ now continues this work at the equestrian centre at La Cañada, Almería, where Barbara goes each week to impart her skills.

Barbara has almost completed a book about her experiences over the past ten years. It is called ‘Riding For My Life’ and it details how a regular course on horseback (with expert tutelage) can save one’s life by slowing down or reversing sickness or counter extreme cures like chemotherapy. ‘Animo’ is a nationally registered charity and Barbara has a personal web-page at animospain.blogspot.com. As with any charity, funds are always needed and anyone can become a “friend of ‘Animo’” and help continue this work.

arbara Napier grew up in California and soon combined her love of horses with therapy for disabled persons. A long term resident of Mojácar, she founded the charity ‘Animo’ in 1986. Her expertise resulted in Barbara representing Spain on the board of the Federation for Riding for the Disabled International (FRDI).

“Equinotherapy” or “equine facilitated therapy” using horses and ponies became known in Northern European countries as “riding for the disabled”, nowadays termed “riding for the physically or mentally challenged”. This therapy is a way by which the gait of a horse can be incorporated to help a rider who has, for example, little or no control of their lower limbs. This could come through an accident, or a congenital condition. Many people, disabled in some way, have found that they can improve their life through a therapeutic program with a horse; anything from being just placed on the back of an animal, surrounded by side-walkers, or with a leader and a number of medical experts. This therapy has also shown great promise for reducing pain, side effects of medication, improving circulation and posture, clearing lungs, helping dysfunctional organs function again, removing marks from vasculitis, curing insomnia and a host of other benefits.

Good News and Bad

The mayor stated that this “flagship development” was now dead in the water. He suggested that expenditure of this magnitude might have to wait another 10 or 15 years, and other solutions had to be found in time for the arrival of the “AVE” train, now slid to 2016. This announcement was greeted with dismay and fury as the existing presence of major surface rail lines and yards is considered to split Almería city in two. The proposed underground station

The mayor is stating that various alternatives now have to be decided, including the moving of the Almería station to El Pulche. Another proposal is that if there is a station at El Pulche it could be considered “temporary”. The last proposal was that if a station was built in the centre of the city, but on the surface, it could have the simpler and cheaper design of a “stopping off” point, rather than a full scale terminal. A station at El Pulche has been mentioned several times in the last few years but this makes the proposed port link really difficult and Almería city is one of the few cities where the port has no rail link. ‘ASAFAL’, an Almería rail pressure group, say that the most important consideration is that there is a passenger and goods terminal in the city centre, not outside, and if it has to be on the surface then do it. Of course, the ‘PSOE’ party considers this is a “slap in the face” because they still govern in Andalucía. This is a gigantic row that has started up again after everybody thought the underground project was signed off and would happen.

What’s On Exhibitions The Cuevas Contemporary Art Museum ‘Manuel Campoy’ at Cuevas Castle now has a permanent exhibition of works by the Catalan artist, Antoni Tàpies, who recently died, along with 400 other paintings. Admission free, open Tues-Sat, 10am-1.30pm & 58pm, Sundays 10am-1.30pm. Marisa Casado exhibits her paintings at the Mojácar Fuente art centre until May 13th. Open Tuesday to Friday 10.30-1.30 & 5pm-8pm, Saturday & Sunday 11am-2pm.

Verissa Wissel, a young German artist, exhibits her digitally composed images entitled “Un Día en el Paraíso” until May 31st, Centro de Arte Museo de Almería (CAMA), Plaza de Carlos Cano, Almería.

‘Byyyana Rock 2012’ will take place June 28th-30th at Pechina near Viator, Almería. June 28th performers will be local groups, and Spanish groups from all over Spain will perform on the following days. The festival was last held in 2008 and attracted 3,000 visitors and famous groups.
