Our PCC at All Saints’ has been thinking and praying about our priorities for the coming year. We have reviewed progress on our 2015 Plan and sought to agree on what we felt God wanted us to do next. Some clear themes emerged.

Sid Valley Mission Community Team Letter Many years ago, I once heard a well-meaning clergyman say something like this: “Ah, music is so over-rated. You don’t need music. If you were stranded on an island, you would get along fine without music.” Being an impressionable young man (as I was then), I actually believed him for a time and started to think that way myself. But then, when I faced some of my lowest moments, I realized that it was music that helped bring me back. It was music that cleared the rubble of my heart and brought it tenderly before the Lord.

So, today, I need music in my life! I think it is important to offer worship and gratitude to God, not only through our thoughtful expressions and words, but also through music. Consider this passage from Ephesians chapter 5 verses 15-21 (NIV): “Be very careful, then, how you live – not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.

Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.”

Do you notice how the Scriptures instruct us to worship? “With psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.” It could be argued that a key indicator of a heart that is worshiping God, ruled by the Spirit, is a heart that sings. We can express gratitude to the Lord by singing and making melody in our hearts to the Lord.

In other words, you can’t rightly worship God without music. Now some can sing beautifully – others less so.

But what matters is not necessarily the noise that comes out, but the heart that sings. In other words, everyone should be a singer, for without singing, without music, you cannot worship God. So, to take that clergyman’s words seriously, if music is ‘over-rated’ and unnecessary for our worship, then you would have to rip out most of the Scriptures, including the largest book, the Psalms. Then you would be left with a much edited Bible. [contd. on page5]

FROM THE VICARAGE Back to the Future?

In the 1989 film Back to the Future 2, the time travelling duo arrive in October 2015! The script writers had to imagine the future. There’s some weird costumes and the skateboard has evolved into a hoverboard.

The visual joke is that as they go past a cinema Jaws 19 is the film showing.

Hollywood making fun of its own delight in sequels.

One of my favourite tracks of film music is the March from “Things to Come” composed by Sir Arthur Bliss for the1936 British film based on the work of H G Wells. The film itself is very interesting in its prediction of global war.

War does seem to be part of human existence, alongside other ills of human society. That’s my cue to introduce our preaching theme in November, the book of Revelation.

We looked at the 7 letters in chapters 2 and 3 last year, and now the time has come to tackle the heart of the book. In a way similar to reading Genesis at the other end of the Bible, we must understand what the book is seeking to do. The opening verses tell us two things. Namely it’s a revelation of Jesus Christ (i.e. it tells us more about Jesus than world history) and it’s a book of prophecy.

It was recently reported that a Christian group in Pennsylvania had to apologise to its followers that the world didn’t end on October 14th 2015 as they had predicted.

In my view we should avoid seeking predictions of world events in these pages and look instead for guidance on how to live today. I think we will find plenty of that!

WELCOME TO ALL SAINTS’, SIDMOUTH Our Mission: We exist to see lives transformed by Christ.

Our Vision is that All Saints’ should be increasingly:  God honouring, Christ following, Spirit-led and Bible-based  Welcoming, open hearted, outward looking and relevant  A people who are humble, gracious, generous and servant hearted.

Our service times are scheduled on page 16 of the magazine. The 8am Holy Communion follows the Book of Common Prayer. The 9.45 Service offers informal contemporary worship during which there’s seekers@saints, separate age related activities in five different groups for those aged 3 to teens. There are crèche facilities for the under 3s. The 11.15 am Service follows Common Worship.

We hope you will always find a warm welcome here, and worship which is both reverent and meaningful.

For disabled people we have level access into the Church by all doors, and a ramp to the Hall and toilets (including adapted toilet); we also provide baby changing facilities. There is an efficient loudspeaker system for those who find listening difficult. A hearing loop, covering most of the church and hall, serves those with hearing aids switched to the ‘T’ position. The car park is available free for those attending services and meetings. Permits for parking at other times are available for church members.

All Saints’ Church is part of the Sid Valley Mission Community in the Devon Anglican Diocese.

Friendship Group for retired people, meets on the second Tuesday of each month from 10am - 12noon for coffee, board games, and other varied activities.

Happy Feet babies and toddler group for pre-schoolers and their families Tuesday mornings 10-11.30am (term-time) for play, craft, story time and songs for children and chat, support and home-made refreshments for adults. Contact Jen Taylor My Dad and Me. A monthly group for fathers and their children First Saturday of the month 8.30 am. Ben Ray Coffee & Co is a group for people who would like to meet others just for friendship. Biddy Miller manages this event which meets on the 4th Saturday of each month 10 am - 12 noon.

Snack ‘n chat meets for a simple lunch, from 12.15 pm on the first Tuesday of the month from October to April. Anne Kay manages this event.

Man to Man Breakfast for the men normally on a third Saturday of a month at 8am – some for Christian men only and some outreach events. Contact Robin Johnson Messy Church is a fun packed session for children of all ages, accompanied by a parent, with games, craft, storytelling, songs, short bible talk and supper.

Sharing tea and coffee after church means

It’s Sunday morning and Purity Muthoni is preparing tea at Mathia Church, Ndima, Kenya. She’s a leading figure in her local Mothers’ Union and parish and not only serves tea but grows it too. Come and find out how buying tea and coffee with the Fairtrade Mark helps people like Purity improve lives in their communities as well as for their own family. (Photo:Traidcraft).

Speak up for Fairtrade 10.30 – 2.30 Sat 21 November The Old Deanery, near Exeter Cathedral, EX1 1HS This ½ day workshop is aimed at church people from all denominations who want to know what a difference Fairtrade makes. It will be ideal for those who wish to prepare to speak on Fairtrade and Trade Justice next year, particularly during Fairtrade Fortnight 2016.

Speakers include Sue Errington from Fairtrade Devon and Janet Lee, a local Traidcraft representative. Traidcraft is the trade development agency and Fairtrade pioneer, that owes its launch to church people. The workshop will address common misconceptions about Fairtrade, highlight useful Scriptures and theological references and resources about trade justice, and demonstrate the changes that Fairtrade brings to people’s lives.

Editor’s Note -

Once a quarter we have a letter written by one of the Sid Valley Mission Community clergy for all the magazines editors to publish to give some sense of unity; this time it’s from Team Rector Rev. Philip Bourne. Roger’s letter is on page 31 followed by the revised Mission Action Plan for 2016 on the last page. There are a lot of things for us to mull over in the various articles this month and lots of fuel for prayer. Quite a number of church members are experiencing ill health at present, so also need our prayers. It’s good to have the balance of youth prayer needs too and lots to give thanks for.

ALL SAINTS’ CAR PARKING PERMITS Permits to park at All Saints’ expire at the end of October. If you wish to renew or are wanting to obtain a permit for the first time, please place your fee as a cheque (no cash please) in an envelope marked for my attention in the “M” pigeon hole and I will provide the permit by return into your own pigeon hole.

The fee is retained at the 2014/15 level of £55 for 1 car and £82,50 for 2 cars.

Please remember you need to be a frequent and regular worshipper at All Saints’ for the last 6 months and be registered on our Electoral Roll, to obtain a parking permit.

No, music in a diversity of styles, is important for the life of every serious believer. We worship God with music – and not just in our church services on Sunday, but in our daily lives as we make a joyful noise to the Lord!

I would encourage you to attend the Deanery Synod meeting on Monday 9th November at 7pm, this time in Sidmouth Parish Church. These meetings, although usually attended by the clergy and our Deanery Synod representatives, are actually open for every church member to attend. At this particular meeting there will be a presentation from Andrew Maries, who currently works for Exeter Diocese as a consultant for liturgy and music. He is also a national figure in the promotion of a greater breadth and understanding of music in worship across the varied styles and traditions. Well worth hearing – and, who knows, our ‘melody to the Lord’ might be enhanced as a result!

Thoughts from Salcombe Regis Our Harvest supper this year was enjoyed by many of our congregation, Friends of Salcombe Regis and invited guests. All in all 63 people sat down to partake of a delicious choice of cold meats, quiche, pork pie or a vegetarian option of cheese and potato pie.

Various salads and new potatoes accompanied the first course followed by a vast selection of mouth-watering desserts. Thanks must go to the flower ladies who decorated the Church so beautifully, the hard working Social team who supplied the salads and also worked very hard behind the scenes. The ladies who made the desserts, Robin and his assistants for auctioneering the harvest produce and everyone else who helped in any way. Our grateful thanks must go to Vinnicombes for the much admired Harvest loaf which they created and to St. Francis Church for the use of their Hall. As a result of the Auction and Harvest Evensong collection we are able to send £250 to the Mission to Seafarers.

November is a busy month for all of us at Salcombe Regis.

Our annual Christmas coffee morning takes place on Thursday 5 th November in the Darlington Room at Abbeyfield Court from 10am,always a most enjoyable morning with Christmas stalls, cakes, books and raffle plus a cup of tea or coffee and the chance to savour a mince pie. There will also be an opportunity to buy Childrens’ Society Christmas cards.

We will be remembering the fallen who lost their lives in the 1 st and 2nd World Wars together with those servicemen and woman who have lost their lives in recent conflicts.

The Act of Remembrance will take place at the War Memorial in Salcombe Regis on Sunday 8th November at 11am when a two minute silence is observed followed by the laying of wreaths and a short service.

November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness month and in continuing support of Kingsley and Monica there will be a Coffee morning to include a Raffle at Twyford House on Friday 13th November from 10am – 12noon. The proceeds of the morning will be donated to Pancreatic Cancer Action.

Sunday the 22nd November is “Stir-Up Sunday” so called for two reasons. The first is from the wording of the collect in the Church service which begins “Stir up, we beseech thee O Lord” and the second is because traditionally this was the day upon which the Christmas Pudding should be made in order for it to have time to mature before Christmas Day. All Saints’ PCC MEETING Our October PCC Meeting took place on Tuesday 13th. The main topic of discussion was an update and sharing of progress made towards the further enactment of our 2015 Mission Action Plan (MAP).

Other topics touched upon were:  Action Items List Review  Vicar and Treasurer Urgent items  Safeguarding Issues  Health and Safety Report Correspondence The finally approved Minutes of the September PCC Meeting are now in the file in the Lounge for your review and information.

During Advent we have no flowers in Church but we do have an Advent Crown. Four candles are fixed round the circle of the Crown representing, Hope, Peace, Love and Joy and each candle will be lit in turn through the four Sundays in Advent with the fifth candle in the middle of the crown being lit on Christmas morning celebrating the birth of Jesus.

This year we will be having an Advent Tree of Thoughts which will be at the back of the Church. The tree will be a bare branch and it is hoped that our congregation and visitors to the Church will write their thoughts on the leaves that are provided and hang them on the tree.

Also in Advent we will be having a Church cleaning party to prepare for our Christmas celebrations. More details of this will be in the weekly Link.

The Zone I LOVE my job and the fact that that I get to work with so many amazing people of different ages.

There seems to be quite a few exciting things coming up with different teams of people; I just can’t ever thank them enough times and I so genuinely mean it. I would like to mention a number of events taking place in the next few weeks for which I would really value your prayer please: This month we trialled a new format for All Saints’ Family@4. This was so much fun working together to encourage and invite new families to the church family. Next month we will carry on this new format or play, praise and prayer looking at the Angel Gabriel talking to Zechariah and blessing him with his son.

The next teatime@theparish is an Advent themed service on the 29 th November. Again this great team work well to provide a younger child friendly short service and this month hopefully with children playing the songs whilst finishing with a fantastic tea.

By the time you will read this we would have had our Bright and Light Party. This is followed by a couple of confirmations (including my youngest son). We are chuffed that he wants to show his commitment to his faith to the Lord Jesus. Our away weekend to Heatree House (Dartmoor) is one of the big highlights of the year. Here our team we will be looking at the theme of love and what the Bible says and how do we try to live this out. Please pray that the children enjoy the fellowship of each other, have a great time and be safe with the various crazy activities and challenges, and consider what God sacrificed for us to show the greatest love of all.

I have the opportunity to go into schools and currently lead assemblies twice a week.

Between the clergy and the wonderful “Open The Book” team there are many assemblies run by Christians through the term in our local schools. Also volunteers tell stories in the nursery. In my assemblies we have been looking at the Fruit of the Spirit. Here we have looked at how these attributes link elsewhere in the Bible and how the children can apply them in their daily lives. So, for example with “joy” we looked at the parable of the Lost Sheep (and they literally had to find the sheep) and today for “peace” we looked at the wonderful passage in Isaiah 11 where it explains that one day the wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat. This is so hard to ever imagine. I pray that these stories will be rooted inside the children here, so that they will want to know more about the Christian Faith. On November 21st we are having a Community Crafty Christmas Morning in All Saints’ Hall. This is a youth fundraiser event aimed at all ages. [contd. on page 11]

The church exists to worship and glorify God for all eternity and is commissioned by Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit to participate in the transforming mission of God within history.”

What should ‘mission’ mean for us at All Saints’? a. World Mission has been described as “The whole church taking the whole gospel to the whole world”. (Lausanne Theology Working Group) i. Whole church: There is no indication in the Bible that a concern and participation in mission is for selected Christians only. ii. Whole gospel: There is no differentiation in the Bible between preaching and social action they are both necessary parts of the whole gospel. iii. Whole world: Equally there is no differentiation as to where the gospel is to be taken. We need to think in terms of both our own personal evangelism in and around our homes and workplaces in the Sid Valley (“in Jerusalem”) and that which happens in the wider world both within the UK and beyond (“in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth”). b. Thus what does the biblical imperative mean for us at All Saints’ today? i.

Mission must be an integral part of the life of our church and of each one of us as its members. ii. Mission must be an active part of that life. iii. We should look to be involved in a cross-section of activities; the “whole gospel” to the “whole world”. c. The PCC has accepted a plan of action following the 3 stages: i. Educating ourselves ii. Supporting those involved in mission, organisations and individuals, through prayer, giving and action iii. Sending of individuals Who, me?

To take these plans forward we have formed a Mission Co-ordinating Group currently consisting of Wendy Kendrick, Lorna Meers, Julie Wheeler, David Lewis, Jenny & Phil Cranch. If reading this article encourages you to get involved, in whatever way, please get in touch with one of us. We need all the help we can get if All Saints’ is to turn these words into action.

Many thanks for your support with the cake sale for CR2EE. IT raised a total of £63 which was a great contribution towards fuel costs. Also donated from various people inside and outside All Saints’ was the sum of £41. There is a box outside the kitchen and another in the link, which is needed to be visible to people outside the church who wish to donate gifts. The boxes will be there until mid November and all gifts however modest will be gratefully received. Thank you all for your support.

Around 17,000 visits were recorded at the FORCE Cancer Support Centre in 2013

The annual SWIMATHON took place on 10th October. Congratulations and thanks to all who took part in the 2 teams representing All Saints’ – John Dunster, Susie Sparks, Eileen Wiltshire, Paula Mills, Edward Mills, Lottie Mills, Pip Nelhams, Ken Nelhams, Pip Scott, Helen Proctor, Lydia Boyd, Lucy Rose, Abigail Rose, Jemmima Proctor, Mark Barrett, Rick Bennett and David Lewis.

Special thanks to Shaun Tipton for raising our teams and managing them at the event.

  

I am so pleased to tell you that the generosity of those members of our congregations who sponsored our swimmers resulted in a total of £912 being pledged so when Gift Aid is added All Saints’ will have achieved over £1,000 which will significantly help the campaign to raise enough funds to employ an Admiral Nurse as a specialist to advise and assist the several hundred people in the Sid Valley who suffer from dementia and also their carers.

Pancreatic Cancer Great news! The fundraiser for pancreatic cancer held on 3rd October raised an astonishing £3300. Unbelievable! That sums up the reaction of everyone involved, not least Kingsley who, at one time, worried that nobody would come!

But, then, he hadn't seen the hall packed to capacity with supporters still queuing to get in.

Heartfelt thanks to All Saints’ for being so accommodating, to the stall holders, the many helpers and to everyone who donated so generously and gave good things to sell.

[from page 8] It will consist of different craft workshops. Also, people will be selling some of their own wonderful creations, some of these will be for other charities. Please come along, (10.30-12.30) have a coffee and cake, and maybe even make something. We are meeting weekly to prepare and create crafts in the run up to this event. It is great to get to know and chat with different people. So, please come along and tell your friends.

We would really value your prayer that this event will be successful and be well received.

Lastly the Messy Church Team always do a wonderful job (and it is hard work and full on!). Did you see us in the Carnival or in the Herald? We won second place (ok, only two entries in that class) but still… The next meeting we will be making chariots, swords and shields (November 8th). Please pray…

Home Group Profile CASTLE HILL HOMEGROUP Our Home Group was founded in 2012 with seven members this has now increased to ten.

We meet every Tuesday evening, but the first Tuesday of the month we attend Prayer and Praise when possible. Our members originated from a good cross section of denominations, Church of England, Baptist, Catholic, Salvation Army, The Brethren and Pentecostal so we have some interesting discussions when we study the Bible!

We always start our meetings with Tea/ Coffee Tiffin etc! This is followed by a period of musical reflection and worship before we go on to study the word.

We try and organize on occasions to go out for a Sunday Roast or have an in house social supper. We have just had an “Away Day “at Mill House Retreat at Westleigh Tiverton which was well attended we were very blessed with beautiful sunny weather and we ended the day with Holy Communion conducted in a very personal way by Rev Jane Taylor who runs the Retreat.

We are celebrating our twenty third anniversary, and every year has been better than the last. *THANK GOD for a wonderful team under the leadership of Sally Wilshaw; Ken Nelhams and Hilary Dunster. It has been a fantastic Summer, including Folk Week, and everything has run smoothly and efficiently - to God be the glory. *PRAISE THE LORD for a wonderful band of volunteers, who have served faithfully with joy and zest, and their willingness to share their gifts and abilities so faithfully. *THANK GOD for our regular customers, many of them frail and infirm, and some quite elderly who faithfully support the ministry.

Especially for the CLC who have just moved their distribution centre from near Winchester to North Wales. *PRAISE GOD that in spite of incredibly heavy expenditure - over ÂŁ7,000-00 p.a. for Council Tax alone, we have managed to maintain this ministry - a registered charity. *PRAY FOR THE TRUSTEES who meet regularly to ensure the whole ministry is kept on course for the glory of God, and the greatest benefit for His church and people..

Remember especially the ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING planned for Monday 2nd November, in the shop at 7.30pm. *PRAISE GOD for the gift of the new Teak seat outside the Mustard Seed shop for weary travellers. *PRAY FOR more volunteers to give a day of half a day on a regular basis to serve in the shop. No experience necessary, just a happy willingness to serve. *PRAY that an increasing number of local Christians will support the ministry of the Mustard Seed by regular public prayer; asking to see new titles, and ordering supplies for their own fellowship and personal use.

We have recently moved our once a month Sunday night Encounter event into the Mustard Seed and are now changing its style and day. It will offer a welcome to whoever comes through the door, and tailor its content accordingly.

So the café will offer a menu of choices, according to what people are looking for. These will include:

A “Cafe” table where people can have a cuppa and a chat, or simply be A “Listening” table/corner where there is always a person available to listen if someone is looking for that A “Bible” table where people can have a look at Scripture together A “Hot Potato” table where people can discuss a challenging current issue A “Worship” corner where people can sing, pray and reflect together.

There will be plenty of space for chat and friendship around that content, as well as cake and a cuppa!

As well as a change of style, Encounter will be running on a different night.

With effect from this month (Nov 20) Encounter will run on the third Friday night of each month. The session will start at 7pm with prayer for those who wish to come for that, before we ‘open the door’ at 7.30pm, and we will then run until 9pm, when we will close and clear up.

We are feeling our way with this at the moment; it is very much a “work in progress”, and we would value your prayers, support and encouragement. We feel it is right to put Encounter out in the town a bit more, and are understandably slightly nervous and tentative about that, but also excited by the possibilities. As somebody once said, “If you want to walk on water, you have to get out of the boat.” So if you want to try a spot of water-walking with us, do come along! And whether you come or not, we would value your prayers. Thanks.
