THE EMERALD LOOP A GEM OF A PROJECT THE EMERALD LOOP WILL BRING LIGHTS, ART, AND A SIGHTSEEING TROLLEY TO CENTER CITY GREENVILLE. LOOK FOR SCULPTURE, MUSIC, MURALS, AND ALL FORMS OF ARTISTIC EXPRESSION

By Marion Blackburn A visionary project in Greenville’s center city will bring rotating sculpture and lighting, dramatic gateways, colorful pavement designs, and social spaces to the downtown area. Visitors will have more opportunities than ever to experience the arts, attend pop-up events, and meet people. Circling the Emerald Arts District will be a new trolley keeping things “in the loop.”

The Emerald Loop promises to transform downtown and surrounding neighborhoods by adding more public art like murals, hidden treasures, and illuminated facades and landscapes. The installations will reinvent familiar landmarks, giving them new identities as part of an energized downtown.

It combines public art concepts with neighborhoods and businesses in the Uptown District. Its themes include the color green, emeralds, and the idea of cultural gems. The first phase includes a large pavement “star” at Reade and Evans streets, already in place. Keep your eyes open throughout 2022 as more changes take place throughout the city.

Greenville’s designation as a SmART City by the North Carolina Arts Council in 2018 launched the project, now with an annual budget of $200,000-$300,000 funded through federal, state, local, and private partners. The multi-year plan is designed to foster creative economies.

Together, the proposed Loop comprises about a 100-block area. It stretches from the Town Common, east to the University Neighborhood, south to the Dickinson Avenue Arts & Historic District, and to West Greenville.

“Our goal is to transform Greenville through the arts — aesthetically, and also economically,” says Holly Garriott, Executive Director of the Pitt County Arts Council at Emerge Gallery. “We know that the arts have a positive impact on economic development.

“That’s what’s so exciting for this city and for eastern North Carolina. This project will bring vitality, activity, community, and people who’ll go to our businesses, restaurants, and other institutions,” she says. “It’s a plan that everyone can get behind.”

Count on seeing visual arts multiply downtown. Expect to see enhanced social spaces where musicians, street performers, and other artists come together with people who enjoy their work. The Emerald Loop, crowned by the Emerald Trolley with stops along the way and incorporating the African American Cultural Trail, will infuse the downtown area with arts, activity, and a sense of place and belonging.

You could say it’s a gem of a project.

Arts Master Plan The Pitt County Arts Council commissioned an Arts Master Plan to guide the project’s development. The Uptown District and Five Points Plaza serve as the heart of the Loop, with a large circle encompassing public spaces, residential, commercial, dining, and breweries.

It incorporates new and existing businesses as the city celebrates its economic stability coming out of the pandemic years.

The Emerald Trolley, expected to arrive in 2022, will carry art lovers and visitors throughout the district. It will also serve as practical transportation for people who want to visit the district without having to drive. The Emerald Loop trolley will showcase artworks as bus stops at Emerge Gallery, the Roxy Theater, Sycamore Hill Gateway Plaza, and other places. Already the Emerald Express, a pilot trolley, is operating as part of the Greenville Area Transit system. www.greenvillenc.org/glimpse 5

Greenville was only the fifth city in the state to receive a SmART City award. The Emerald Loop took shape under the direction of local artists, businesses, and interested members of the public. Plans developed by Haddad|Drugan relied on historical research and contemporary interviews to determine how to build on the city’s successes — and propel it forward.

While completion will take about three more years, a steady stream of new elements will continuously appear throughout the center city. Recessed, thermoplastic film asphalt designs are set for Cotanche and Reade streets, with more planned after the city completes its BUILD Project on Fifth Street. In 2019 the city received $15 million in BUILD Grant funds for center city improvements. These federal funds will be used in greenway and sidewalk construction, and the Arts Council will fund the intersection murals.

“Public art is the most accessible cultural experience that our community can have,” Garriott says. “It’s out 24 hours a day, every day of the year. It doesn’t matter how much money you have, or your background, it’s an experience that’s truly accessible.

“It doesn’t have to be a destination — it can be just passing it by and going, ‘Wow,’” she says. “It not only esthetically affects us, visually, but it creates a sense of place and belonging.”

The loop will extend to the Andrew A. Best Bridge on 10th Street, which serves as landmark connecting Greenville’s medical center, the Dickinson Avenue Historic District, Intersect East, East Carolina University’s innovation campus already in progress, and the center city business core.

Changing illumination will shine at City Hall, the Pitt County Courthouse, several private buildings, and the Town Common, among locations.

Although the Loop will bring new art, it also redirects attention to the familiar landmarks. Building facades, natural areas, and even the retro tower on top of the former CenturyLink building will feature rotating illumination. The effect reminds us of the cultural, historic, and personal value of everyday places.

The planning document describes immersive experiences with participatory events that will synchronize the past and present, honor the city’s diversity, and engage the community in artwork.

More public and private investment should follow, including design teams to tailor their projects to the city’s features.

The project also envisions a public art plaza at Five Points, converting the northern quarter of the area to a permanent pedestrian space with art that engages public participation.

There are plans for a gazebo on Evans Street, a sculpture walk as part of the Millennial Connector, and a mural near the planned roundabout on Albemarle Avenue and West Fifth Street.

Like a large bracelet, the Emerald Loop embraces it all. The Greene Street Bridge at the Town Common will continue to light up leading east. In West Greenville, the black business district known as “The Block” will be featured.

The trolley circling the city’s core means local and out-of-town visitors can leave their car behind when they head into a brewery, visit a gallery, or have lunch or dinner. The resulting vehicle

may closely resemble the Emerald Express, retrofitted to become “public art on wheels.”

The experience is designed to delight.

The Emerald Loop is more than a pretty face, though. A thriving downtown, art districts, a multi-modal urban arts trail have a clear connection to economic development.

Brad Hufford, vice president of business development at the Greenville Eastern North Carolina (ENC) Alliance, a public-private partnership, has been part of planning the start. He says recruiting business and industry to the area benefits from its arts scene.

“When clients come to Greenville, and we show them around our city, we always take a moment to drive them through downtown to show them all the cool things that are going on,” Hufford said. “The arts are important.

“Our Uptown District shows that the community is lively, that there’s energy.

That’s what businesses look for when they’re making their investments.”

Hufford noted the economic benefit starts with the artists themselves. When they receive commissions for work, they use it in art supply stores, in hiring staff, and by spending the money in myriad ways.

From there, you have the artwork drawing people to our community. Once here, they spend money in local businesses. They may invest in artwork — or even decide to locate their business in Greenville-Pitt County.

“You see the art — you drive by — you like it, then you want to buy it,” he said. “There is investment, and job creation. From there, you have increased tax base from the new physical construction.”

THE AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL TRAIL The African American Cultural Trail opened in fall 2021, marking a new chapter in Greenville’s civic history.

This free, self-guided walking tour highlights six landmarks in the center city and West Greenville. Markers tell the stories of city residents whose achievements in music, business, health, and education among others made an invaluable contribution to our culture.

The trail begins at the Sycamore Hill Gateway Plaza on the Town Common, dips onto Evans Street at Emerge Gallery, and continues along west Fifth Street to the C.M. Eppes School on Nash Street. Markers along with the trail describe some of the city’s outstanding African American history makers and their accomplishments. They also commemorate the places that once stood there.

These include the former downtown neighborhood torn down in the name of urban renewal to create the Town Common park, the Shore Drive Redevelopment Project.

Another marker stands on the corner of Second and Evans Street, where Miss Frances Hopkins, a black nurse, opened her home as a unit of the hospital to serve colored patients. Eventually, the St. Frances Hospital for Colored People had 15 beds.

The trail circles west to Albemarle Avenue to “The Block,” the historic black business district. It includes the Roxy Theater, which operated from 1948 until 1972. It is currently being renovated.

Speaking at the trail’s official opening in October 2021, the Rev. Dr. James Alexander, senior pastor of Sycamore Hill Missionary Baptist Church, said it tells of African Americans’ contributions in this community, and would serve as “an invitation to blaze another trail in Greenville and beyond.”

When a business makes the decision to move its factory, offices, or headquarters to Greenville and Pitt County, there is a long list of criteria. In addition to concrete infrastructure, the arts support the quality of life that matters.

“It has to make sense for their business, that they’ll find the employees they need, the utilities, tax environment, and real estate,” he said. “In their criteria they also need to know they’re going into a community that has a long-term investment in itself.

That it has amenities they can use. It boils down to the people.

That’s what we put first and foremost. Companies are creating jobs for people. They need to recruit people to Greenville from all over the country, and world.

“When people make a decision to move to this county, they want to live in a good-quality location. A place that’s lively. That’s why the arts are important to communities, and to their economies.”

Not only are the arts important for recruiting and quality of life, but they have a clear financial impact. Nationally, the arts and culture industry is estimated to have generated $166.3 billion of economic activity in 2015, according to the landmark Arts & Economic Prosperity study 5 (2017). About $63.8 billion of that was by arts and cultural organizations. Another $102.5 billion was associated with spending by art lovers and audiences. That’s an estimated 4.6 million jobs, and $27.5 billion for government at all levels. That windfall results from about $5 billion in arts investments.

At heart, why does supporting the arts lead to greater economic development for a community? The answers lie in the work itself.

“Art brings new ideas,” Garriott says. “People will have different thoughts about it, and that’s OK. Everyone will have their own opinion — but people are talking about it. That creates conversations for lots of people.” That conversation helps a community thrive.

The Emerald Loop is a transformative project for Greenville.

It highlights its best features old and new, offering a living arts experience that links the city’s cultural gems and its neighborhood communities.

It will redefine what it means to find yourself in the Emerald Arts District.

“This is going to give Greenville an identity, a true uniqueness,” Garriott says. “That’s really important for us. Greenville should be the cultural hub of eastern North Carolina. We want to make sure people want to stay in Greenville, and not leave for another city. We want this project to grow, so that no matter how you travel through our center city you’ll have a cultural experience.”

HOTELS RETURN TO UPTOWN GREENVILLE A major investment will open a hotel in the Uptown Greenville district. It marks the first time in decades visitors can stay right in the heart of town.

The Hilton Garden Inn will rise seven stories high, dramatically transforming the downtown skyline. It will have 90 rooms and feature a rooftop bar and restaurant. It will reshape the city’s skyline and give visitors the chance to experience the center city just outside their door.

This project and others are reshaping Greenville as it experiences growth surge unseen in years. These investments include the multi-million dollar federal BUILD streetscape project, Intersect East in East Carolina University’s warehouse district, and the Emerald Loop, as well as N.C. Department of Transportation upgrades to the Dickinson Avenue Historic District.

The planned Ficklen Project at Dickinson Avenue will also include a new hotel with 70 rooms, as well as a 10,000-squarefoot event space and outdoor courtyard. The Star Warehouse Market and the Ficklen Hotel will reconfigure the E.B. Ficklen and Star Tobacco warehouse buildings into modern spaces that recall the city’s past, but have a community atmosphere.

“Greenville has many outstanding components, including our university, and medical campus,” Dzeko says. “We have our government downtown. When businesses recruit new employees, they want to show off the downtown. Moreover, that’s where people want to look, walk around, and shop. It’s where they want to stay.

“Now they have that chance,” she says. “They can stay right in the heart of the city.”

Construction on the downtown Hilton should begin sometime in 2022.

“We are in a continued revitalization,” Dzeko says. “We are seeing a monumental wave of public-private investment.

Intersect East is a public-private research project, plus we are seeing hotels, and a streetscape capital project from the city. It’s an influx of investment.

“A strong urban core assures the success of Greenville as the metropolitan capital of the east,” she says. “The downtown you see today will be completely different once these projects are completed.”

In all, these projects are recreating the city as it takes its place as the metropolitan center of eastern North Carolina, says Meredith Dzeko, former executive director of Uptown Greenville.

Grover Gaming, founded in 2013, sits in the top 4 percent nationally in revenue growth and is the fastest growing company in eastern North Carolina. It plans further investments in its Pitt County operations in the next few years, and to expand by 150 – 200 employees.

“It’s a great place,” he says. “We could move the company anywhere, but when people come to interview, they check out the schools, the housing. You don’t have the traffic of Atlanta and Raleigh. Once they visit here, it’s an advantage to us.”

Tech firms like Grover Gaming will find they can thrive in Pitt County. The knowledge base exists for future employees, whether it’s programs at ECU, Pitt Community College, or the school system. General skills and advanced coding classes, as well as animation, and even music each contribute to the rich setting Greenville and Pitt County offer prospective technology firms.

One staff member relocated from Manhattan because of the area’s “energy and the culture.” Alex Chang says, “My visit to the Greenville facility sealed the deal for me.”

The company’s success also stems from its supportive culture.

Angie Cline serves as the Dean of Grover University, a role that allows her to foster professional growth among the staff.

“The goal of Grover University is to increase the personal, professional, and leadership development of our people,” she says. Additionally, the company’s Care Team focuses on employees’ general well-being — their mental, spiritual, and physical health and fitness — “the whole person.” Each office has a Care Team member. They are all under the guidance of John Conway, Grover’s director of care.

Tech innovators welcome During the pandemic, tech companies, realizing they could work from anywhere, discovered North Carolina and invested millions moving their offices to the state. In April 2021, Apple announced it was investing about $1 billion in a new campus in the Triangle area, bringing about 3,000 jobs. Google plans to create a hub in Durham for its Google Cloud engineers, which will have more than 1,000 jobs, and be among Google top Cloud engineering locations.

“Tech innovation is an opportunity, something we have just scratched the surface on,” says Kelly Andrews, director for Pitt County Economic Development. “We hear a lot about biotech, but this is also an opportunity, and a responsibility, to help them find us. To help them match up people with job skills. We have a lot of prospects in the knowledge economy.”

The best way to promote the area to new businesses is to offer them a strong education base.

“It’s important for us to work with our educational institutions, and workforce partners, to do a good job of coordinating those opportunities,” Andrews says. “We have to work with the companies to develop their future workforce. What are the skill-sets that they need? Then, we can develop a continuum of training from middle school to the community college and university levels.”

Grover Gaming’s business model relies on two primary operation currents: one provides games to nonprofits for charitable gambling. These include social clubs like the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars that raise revenue through charitable gaming. Charitable gambling is

permitted in Virginia, North Dakota, Kentucky, New Hampshire, and Ohio among other states.

The other current is Video Lottery Terminals. These games are linked to state lotteries. Grover Gaming is also developing its own Historical Horse Racing System. In those games, wins are determined by horse races that occurred in the past.

Kevin Morse, an attorney who was working in the industry when he met Blackwelder, now serves as the company’s director of market development. He notes that Grover Gaming has a strong customer service component that offers full support for its products.

After enlarging its offices two years ago, the company found it once again needed space. The company recently moved a large part of its development team to the “Grover Development Center,” an additional 12,000 square foot office located near the medical center. It has also opened a new game studio in Wilmington.

Eventually Grover Gaming hopes to create a large, campustype headquarters that will allow for future growth of the company with all development, administration, and support at one location.

In the end, its alternative culture and strong employee support have brought the company considerable industry success.

That’s a winning combination.

“We provide them everything they need,” Morse says.

While the shutdowns from the COVID pandemic affected sales, it never slowed down the company’s creative production or hiring efforts.

“It helps our employees in their own lives,” Morse says. “That is good business.”

FROM GREENVILLE TO THE BIG LEAGUES GREENVILLE NATIVE, JOE WEST, LEAVES HIS MARK ON THE GAME.

By Bethany Bradsher Joe West’s hometown friends know perfectly well how he is often perceived by baseball fans. As the umpire who just announced his retirement in fall 2021 after officiating the most games in Major League Baseball history, West has had ample opportunities to enrage various fan bases, and even some players and managers.

It’s not hyperbole to say that for some, West has become the face of general frustration with the arbiters of America’s game.

But even though they understand why their old friend has found his way into so many fan’s cross-hairs, Joe’s inner circle in Greenville and beyond also know that the common caricature of West doesn’t square at all with the man they have known for more than sixty years.

For more than four decades, from the date of that promotion up until he retired after working behind the plate at the NL Wild Card game on October 5, 2021, West has borne witness to an astounding range of historic moments in baseball. He was in the ballpark for Nolan Ryan’s fifth career no-hitter, Willie McCovey’s 500th home run, and Albert Pujols’ 400th home run. He has been part of the officiating crew for six World Series, ten League Championship West’s resume is Series and three All-Star Games. As Mike Aldridge, who was a few years older than West but watched him come up through J.H. Rose High as a three-sport athlete, assessed his longtime friend: “He’s a grizzly bear on the outside and a teddy bear on the inside.”

It’s no wonder Joe West is easily the most recognizable official in the game. After umpiring to make extra money during his college years, when he was also a star quarterback for Elon College after transferring from ECU, he was encouraged to attend umpiring school and achieved a perfect score on the qualification exam.

After just a few short years in the minor leagues, he had his first opportunity to call a game in the bigs when he was just twentyfour years old, and he joined the full-time National League staff in 1978 at the age of twenty-six. “You blinked your eye and he was in the majors,” said childhood friend Randy Phillips.

West’s resume is matchless, but his loyalty to his hometown and his earliest friends, his respect for the game of baseball and his generosity are the aspects of his storied life that have had the greatest personal impact on those around him. Start with that officiating record he broke in May, in a series between the White Sox and the Cardinals at Chicago’s Guaranteed Rate Field. Childhood friend Jimmy Bond had long told West that he intended to come when West broke the umpiring record, so when he learned when and where the big game would occur Bond planned a trip with four other friends.

As he always does when eastern North Carolina friends come watch him do his thing, West pulled out all the stops for Bond and the others on site for that historic event. He reserved a block of hotel rooms for them, bought meals and even had koozies and T-shirts designed for each member of his personal entourage — www.greenvillenc.org/glimpse 17

which Bond said numbered a whopping 126 friends and family.

Bond also got to attend a World Series game as West’s guest in 2005 in Houston, as did longtime J.H. Rose baseball coach Ronald Vincent and a small contingency of other Greenville people in Philadelphia in 2009.

But it doesn’t have to be a big postseason game or a recordbreaking moment for West to roll out the red carpet for his Greenville friends. He has always loved the opportunity to host hometown buddies at the ballparks where he works — driving them to his special parking place and escorting them in through the umpire entrance, introducing them to other members of the crew, letting them walk out at the field level and securing them choice seats for the game itself. Then, after the final pitch, dinner out at a nice restaurant where no one who has made the trip from eastern North Carolina is ever allowed to pull out their wallet.

“When you go to the games with Joe West,” Vincent said, “it ruins you to go any other way.”

And even if West has been involved with several notable spats in his long career and had to eject his fair share of angry players and managers, Phillips has watched his career for decades and has seen something more powerful that doesn’t make the highlight reels — a sincere regard from those within the game for the man who has given his life to the sport of baseball.

“The folks that talk junk about him, they don’t know him,” Phillips said. “If you talk to the players, they respect him. He has always just loved the game. And I think his respect for the game has made him get respect from the players.”

GET TO KNOW DR. PHILIP ROGERS, CHANCELLOR - EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY Q&A WITH DR. PHILIP ROGERS

By Trent McGee and Dr. Philip Rogers Dr. Philip Rogers was elected the 12th chancellor of East Carolina University on December 17, 2020. Prior to serving nearly seven years as senior vice president of learning and engagement at the American Council on Education, Rogers served from 2008-2013 as ECU’s chief of staff.

Being a native of Greenville, what are some of your favorite childhood memories of the Emerald City?

Greenville and eastern North Carolina was a special place to live, learn, and grow as a child. I feel extraordinarily fortunate to have had the opportunity to spend my childhood in this city and region — and I’m especially excited to raise my own two boys in this community. Some of my best memories were on the athletics fields of Greenville — including winning a little league state championship and participating in a variety of other local youth camps and activities. We were also fortunate to live in a community that prioritized a wide array of cultural and art offerings. I can remember attending performances in Wright Auditorium and learning from some of ECU’s top faculty at community events over the years. ECU and the city must be inextricably linked — and I was a beneficiary of that relationship as a young child in this community.

What drove you to seek a career in higher education?

I pursued this career field because I believe it is the way I can make the biggest difference in the lives of the people in our community, region, and state. Our university motto focused on service is what motivates me in this work. If I can wake up each day to invest my time and energy to serve others, then it feeds my heart and soul.

Who are some of the individuals that have had the biggest impact on you personally and professionally?

My parents set the tone for my core values as an individual and leader. They have invested in me in meaningful ways throughout

There are so many others in my professional life that served as catalysts for my career. One such individual was the late Dr. Austin Bunch. He hired me into my first role at ECU as policy analyst and legislative liaison. Dr. Bunch was not only a mentor to me, but so many other individuals that have emerged as leaders on ECU’s campus. He embodied our motto of “servire” (to serve) in every way and made a lasting impact on my life.

What, in your opinion, separates East Carolina University from other institutions of higher learning in North Carolina?

The three core components of ECU’s mission statement represent the very essence of our distinctive advantage in the higher education market. Public service, student success, and regional transformation are core to who we are as an institution; they strike at the very heart of why we were first created as an institution of higher learning; and these focus areas will carry us into the future as a mission-aligned, future-focused, and innovation-driven institution.

When you think about the future of East Carolina University and its economic impact on eastern North Carolina, what comes to mind?

ECU provides an incredible return on investment to the people of North Carolina. This institution is an economic engine and our impact across the state exceeds more than $2.5 billion. We prepare well-round graduates for the careers of the future and are deeply invested in regional transformation. ECU produces the next generation of health professionals, teachers, business experts, and so many other thought leaders in various fields to make a lasting difference on the economic health of our state.

GAMMA KNIFE GAMMA KNIFE TREATMENTS REDUCING TUMORS WHILE SAVING HEALTHY TISSUE

By Marion Blackburn When cancer spreads to the brain, treatment requires finely tuned approaches to protect this essential organ. Imagine the difference it makes for cancer patients in eastern North Carolina when they can get precision treatments from one of only two Gamma Knife devices in the state.

Lee recalls a patient who discovered brain cancer after developing dizziness. She had a metastatic brain tumor in the cerebellum. She previously had lung cancer and thought it was in remission. To treat her condition, she underwent five Gamma Knife treatments over several years, along with immunotherapy.

The Gamma Knife at Vidant Health, which officially becomes ECU Health in 2022, is part of the Vidant Cancer Center (see “ECU Health Arrives”). It offers patients high-tech cancer care without having to travel long distances.

“She’s now seven or eight years out from her first Gamma Knife treatment,” Lee says. “She has no sign of any disease in the brain or in her lung.”

This advanced device delivers highly focused radiation to the brain, pinpointing tumors and lesions but sparing healthy tissue.

That means shorter treatment times, fewer side effects, and the chance to resume normal life sooner. With less risk to the brain, patients experience a better quality of life as they recover.

Many types of cancer can spread to the brain. These include lung, skin, and breast cancer. Because people with cancer live longer today, they have a greater risk of experiencing metastasis.

With Gamma Knife treatments, patients can live years longer than in the past. That’s when they had a prognosis of only about six months, says Dr. Stuart Lee, chief of the Vidant Health Division of Neurosurgery, and medical director of the Gamma Knife Center.

“The Gamma Knife is like surgery,” he says. “The tumor is the bullseye. There is very little radiation to the next ring of the target, which is your healthy brain tissue. The Gamma Knife treats only the tumor.”

There are other advantages as well. People can have Gamma Knife treatment in the morning, and chemotherapy in the afternoon. “People can receive both treatments on the same day.”

The device can also be used to treat trigeminal neuralgia, a painful condition causing severe facial pain. In one case, the discomfort left a 90-year-old patient unable to eat. Open surgery is very effective, but for older patients it carries high risks. A traditional open procedure was not recommended, but Gamma Knife treatment resolved her pain.

“It really helps patients in two ways,” says Dr. Matthew Sean Peach, a radiation oncologist at East Carolina University’s Brody School of Medicine. “Instead of having a treatment that may take 10 to 30 days using traditional, external beam radiation, we can treat in one to five days using the Gamma Knife.

“Many of our patients live in other communities,” Peach says.

“Being able to return home sooner is important for them.”

The small, targeted doses aimed directly at the tumor kill cancer cells with little effect on the brain. That’s a dramatic change from the past, when this type of cancer required whole-brain radiation. While it reduced tumor size, it also left patients with undesirable side effects and mental decline. It caused memory loss, speech problems, and fatigue among other troubling issues. It was used because formerly people with brain cancer were unlikely to live long enough to experience those cognitive problems. Their life expectancy was only a few months.

With Gamma Knife, treatment means not only survival, but also retaining a good quality of life. That means everything for people with brain cancer.

“It also allows us to treat things that otherwise we couldn’t treat,” Peach says. For example, after initial treatment, brain cancers may return. “If they’re near areas of the brain that are sensitive to radiation, such as the neural networks controlling the eyes, we can treat with the Gamma Knife.”

Vidant Medical Center has offered this treatment since 2005.

It recently passed a milestone of 2,000 treatments. That’s hundreds of lives saved, families kept together, and people returning to their normal lives. The Gamma Knife is one element in a comprehensive treatment plan patients can find at Vidant Cancer Care at the Eddie and Jo Allison Smith Tower at Vidant Medical Center.

“It’s more than just the Gamma Knife. It’s the combination of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and other treatments that were unheard of years ago,” Lee says. “When you put these elements together, people have the opportunity to live much longer than they did 10 years ago.”

Gamma Knife treatments mean patients can find the comprehensive services they need, close to home.

An advanced medical center located in the area provides essential value for business investment.

Because it’s such a high-tech approach, treatment times may be as little as 11 minutes, although the average is 30 – 45 minutes.

The procedures are usually done without an overnight hospital stay. For patients traveling from all points east, that makes a big difference.

“Having Vidant Health in our community is an added advantage,” says Uconda Dunn, vice president of business development at the Greenville ENC Alliance. “When we recruit companies, they want to make sure adequate health care is available for their employees. Company executives may be moving with elderly parents, or with a preexisting health condition, and the need for adequate health care is paramount.

Vidant Medical Center is an asset to us in our recruiting practice.

“A lot of our patients already drive hours to see us — from Duplin County, the Outer Banks,” Lee says. Reducing treatment times by hours, even days, lessens the hardships faced by people already struggling with illness.

“It also opens us up to research and development,” Dunn says.

“As we recruit medical device and supply companies, they look to partner with the Brody School of Medicine. The presence of Brody and ECU is vital for economic development.”

Since 2019, Vidant Medical Center also offers patients the GammaTile treatment. In this procedure, a radioactive “wafer” is inserted in the cavity after surgical removal of a brain tumor to deliver regular doses of radiation. The foam gel square allows treatment to begin immediately, without damage to other tissue.

“There is not a low-dose spill as you have with other modalities,” Peach says. Vidant Cancer Care is one of 30 locations in the country using this technology.

Vidant Medical Center was recently named one of eight Elite GammaTile centers in the nation, based on the number of patients treated with this therapy.

In 2021, there were an estimated 63,930 new cases of cancer in North Carolina, resulting in 20,150 deaths. Traditionally, eastern North Carolina has more than its proportional share of the state’s cases and deaths.

The combined treatments including Gamma Knife, GammaTile, radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, surgery, and other forms of cancer care will continue to support these patients as they overcome the disease.

ECU HEALTH ON THE HORIZON

By Marion Blackburn A new operating agreement between Vidant Health and the Brody School of Medicine will allow the two entities to operate under a new banner coming later this year: ECU Health.

ECU Health will serve as the name for the Greenville-based health system currently known as Vidant Health. It will include the system’s entities throughout eastern North Carolina.

ECU Health will also comprise ECU Physicians, the group practice of the Brody School of Medicine. The Brody School of Medicine will not see a name change.

The agreement aims to • Improve the value of and the access to health care • More efficiently use clinical staff in combined operations • Develop and use new strategies health needs of eastern North Carolina • Reduce costs

There will also be a shared leadership and governance structure for ECU Health.

Vidant Medical Center, the flagship hospital in Greenville, has 974 beds and is part of a system serving 1.4 million people in 29 eastern North Carolina counties.

Greenville’s Medical District is also home to the School of Dental Medicine, and the colleges of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences. The East Carolina Heart Institute and Vidant Cancer Center are also located in the medical center.

The Veterans Administration Health Care Center, along with doctors and other health professionals, is also located in the district.
