Amir Nassiri / Iran I like taking pictures of people, not just because of their mood, but because I can watch their pictures without getting involved in a conversation with them. As a child, I watched family albums in solitude and weaved stories for photos and people inside. I like to cut the picture that I took and put aside the extra things to keep what is more important, which usually are portraits or objects that tell the story and make the memory more vivid. Every Polaroid photo is unique, like a piece of jewelry that keeps the image of the person I love in itself forever. In this collection, I have used techniques that increase my focus on the subject, the process of the work is gradual and accurate, like drawing by pencil on a metal surface and chasing, that with each hammer hit and chisel movement on metal, and I adjust the impact based on my feelings. I enjoy telling stories; there is a memory in each jewel piece that will be with me as long as I live. From personal memory to collective memory.

For us, death is an inevitable part of life. So people try to attach a lot of meaning to death and life. It can be said that death and life coexist in opposite positions and play their own roles in human life. Knowing the sorrow and regret of death makes life so important. Some people say that one of the scariest things about the death of someone close to you is that the memory of that person gradually fades away. However, that does not mean that life itself with them did not exist. Because the memories we keep as well as the forgotten memories are a part of life and a whole. The reason why my work is made for the act of containing, storing, and looking at images related to memory is because the concept of memory occupies an important part in human life. Until death divides our lives, our memories build up, or are forgotten. In this inevitable process, we try our best to catch even a little bit of precious things.

The “Fleeting Memories” series was developed in 2020 when the world was on pause, suddenly the society fell quiet, and silence was part of our everyday life. During the long months of separation from “normal life”, I felt trapped in a barrage of past memories. I relived those scattered memories from the past with no clear order. I was overwhelmed but at the same time indulged in those vivid memories coming in a form of wave that overcame my mind and body. The abundance of time allowed me to access and reflect on my past to have a different perspective in life. I chose mother of pearl as the main material, the fragile fragments are individually hand-sawed and riveted onto an anodized niobium or titanium backing to form an integrated vision. The iridescent remnants represent fractions of my memories from the past, together they weave and intertwine to tell my story.
