The original idea for the jewellery was born at a Jorge Manilla workshop at the Budapest Jewellery Week 2019, the theme was self-portrait. I have developed the theme and made the first jewellery in the series for this competition. I reflected on how my family, who have large impact on who I have become. I came to the conclusion that the candle symbolizes the time I spent with my family. The candle is there when we celebrate. We can even make a wish on our birthday if we manage to blow out the candle. But the candle is also there when we say goodbye to someone and when we remember them. In Catholic churches, the burning candles represent both the flame of faith and eternal life for the faithful. Hungarian folklore says that everyone has a burning candle in heaven, and as long as it burns, you live. The candle accompanies a person through life, and plays just as significant and symbolic a role at a christening as it does on a birthday cake, next to the dying or at the funeral.

This pendant piece was made as a keepsake for my friend, representing a narrative of how death separated her from grandma. This eternally beating electrocardiogram symbolizes her endless yearning. Death is something we can not escape, it is a thing we must face sooner or later. Myself has experienced several separation from my family by death. Losing someone you love is hurtful, but once you get over the most difficult time you realize they are not gone completely as you thought, the time you went through together is true and forever. Though you will never meet that person again, you can always feel there is part of them left in you. Therefore, I believe death is not an end but a new start, life is a loop and memories can lead us the way, that's why in my work I want to deliver a positive message that we will always be together, even death do us part.
