Allendale’s New Firehouse: A Symbol of Community Progress
After years of anticipation, the new rehouse in Allendale is nally on the brink of completion. This project has been a long time coming, but the wait was well worth it! The rehouse will be sta ed with on-call re ghters and out tted with the latest technology, ensuring that the Allendale community receives the best possible emergency services. With improved response times and comfortable living quarters for re ghters, this new construction is set to make a positive impact on the community.
I interviewed Fire Chief Mike Keefe for more information on this project!
By Shelby Sullivan Writer for the AACC
The construction of the new firehouse was completed in February 2023, so the community can expect it to be open now! There are no plans for future expansions or upgrades, but the public is welcome to tour the facility once the firehouse is open.
"We are planning a community open house on May 6th. Details are still being worked out”, says Fire Chief Keefe. For those interested in getting involved in the ongoing maintenance and operation of the new firehouse, they can become paid on-call firefighters! "If anyone is interested in becoming a paid on-call firefighter, we are always looking for outstanding people to join," says Fire Chief Keefe.
What Was the Building Process Like?
"This has been a three-tiered project starting with the old maintenance building… Next comes the new fire station and the last will be the current township hall," says Fire Chief Mike Keefe of Allendale Township. Although it was difficult to get board approval and finance the project, the new firehouse was able to be paid for without raising any Ottawa county tax or millage rates! As if that weren’t great enough, the best part is gaining a new asset to the Allendale community. "The most exciting part was knowing after many years that we were going to actually see a new fire station,” says Fire Chief Keefe. “There have been many committees put together since 1998 trying to make this a go.”
What Upgrades is the Firehouse Getting?
The new firehouse is staffed and equipped with the latest technology, ensuring that the Allendale community receives the best possible emergency services. "For now, the station will be staffed from 6am-6pm Monday through Friday," says Fire Chief Keefe. "When not staffed, we have paid on-call firefighters that will cover Allendale." The construction of the new firehouse is expected to improve response times, too! "With the new construction we will improve response times. We will have living quarters for firefighters, which will increase their time spent at the station. This reduces the time it would take for them to respond from home.”
Let’s Get Excited!
In conclusion, the new firehouse in Allendale represents the community's unwavering dedication to providing top-notch emergency services. Despite the challenges faced during the building process, the end result is truly remarkable and will positively impact the community in countless ways.
Take action today by attending the upcoming community open house on May 6th and see the new firehouse for yourself! And for those interested in making a difference in their community, consider joining the team of paid on-call firefighters. Let's work together to ensure that the Allendale community continues to receive the best possible emergency services.

Nobody: Our trees: : Kendra Stanley-Mills
Some crafty Grand Valley State University residents have brought joy to their campus by creating smiley faces on tree trunks using snow. In early February, these cheerful faces were seen all over campus and brought smiles to the faces of many students and faculty members.
Using snow as their medium, these happy artists carefully molded it into the shapes of smiley faces on the trunks of trees. The result is a series of cheerful faces that look like they're beaming across the landscape, bringing happiness and lightheartedness to the otherwise bleak winter landscape.
By Shelby Sullivan Writer for the AACC
The smiling trees were a popular sight on campus, with many students stopping to take photos and share their joy on social media. The smiles have since spread beyond the campus when the photos were shared and liked online.
GVSU’s smiling trees are a testament to the power of small acts of kindness and creativity. Despite being a simple creation, they have profoundly impacted the community and brought joy to many. They remind us that even during the cold, wet months, we can all do something to bring happiness to those around us!
At the time, students and GVSU faculty commented on how these smiley faces brightened their day. One commenter said, "Gorgeous," while another added, This made me smile on my way this morning!"
GVSU’s smiling trees have made a lasting impression on the campus and beyond. They have brought a smile to the faces of many students and faculty members and have shown the power of small acts of kindness in bringing joy and happiness to others. Thank you, GVSU residents, for brightening up an otherwise dreary February!

From Allendale Eye Care (Behind True Value)
Ask the Eye Doctor
WHY DOES MY CONTACT LENS PRESCRIPTION EXPIRE AFTER ONLY ONE YEAR?
The FDA oversees and regulates the safety, effectiveness and manufacturing of all contact lenses. They also define contact lenses as a medical device. This is different, compared to glasses. Contact lenses have an inherent risk with wear that is not present when compared to glasses use. FDA requires specific tests to renew or refit for a new contact lens prescription. If contact lenses are not used as directed there are significant risks that a patient may experience, including severe eye infections.
WHY CAN’T I ORDER A DIFFERENT BRAND OF CONTACTS THAN MY DOCTOR PRESCRIBED?
Each brand of contact lenses has its own unique material, oxygen transmission ability and fitting parameters. Your eye doctor should be able to ensure that you are receiving the best options available based on your type of contact lens wear schedule. Your eye doctor is required by the FDA to verify that the lenses that are prescribed for you fit properly and are appropriate for your type of use. This must be completed before your contact lens prescription can be finalized.
WHY SHOULD I REPLACE MY DISPOSABLE LENSES ON SCHEDULE WHEN THEY STILL FEEL FINE?
The FDA regulates the contact lens manufacturers to label their replacement recommendations based on oxygen transmission. As contact lenses age, their performance starts to diminish, including reduced oxygen transmission through the lenses. Reduced contact lens performance puts your corneas under stress. This opens up opportunities for inflammation, irritation and potential infections. A contact lens that is disposed of in a timely manner, greatly reduces the incidence of contact lens complications. Conversely, overwear and abuse of contact lens use, greatly increases the chance of a severe ocular complication and ocular emergencies.
WHY SHOULD I PURCHASE MY CONTACT LENS SUPPLY FROM MY DOCTOR INSTEAD OF OTHER RETAILER?
It is required that every patient must have access to their contact lens prescription after the prescription has been finalized. Purchasing from the doctor’s site allows for use of insurance benefits, if available, emergency trials when needed and oversight that you are receiving your correct prescription. Our patients are provided a personal ordering portal for prescription access, 24/7 ordering and FREE SHIPPING to your door. Due to privacy, we will NEVER give out your information to a 3rd party.

THEATER PERFORMANCE: THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST
by Oscar Wilde directed by Diane Machin
Want to see a farcical comedy in which the protagonists maintain fictitious personae to escape burdensome social obligations? I do!
Set in Victorian London, this sophisticated yet hilarious satire follows two friends - Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrie - as they concoct witty schemes to win the hearts of Gwendolen Fairfax and Cecily Cardew. The play's title comes from Wilde’s phrase, "to be serious about the importance of being earnest is a very di erent thing from being earnest about its importance,” implying that living life with integrity is more important than taking one’s reputation seriously.

ON THE MOVE
WITH GATEWAY GROUP REAL ESTATE
The real estate market in West Michigan is ourishing with new opportunities for home buyers and sellers. Whether you are looking to buy or sell a home, understanding the current market conditions in Allendale, Blendon, Georgetown, Robinson and Polkton/ Coopersville can help you make the best decisions for your needs.
While all of West Michigan is seeing an increase of demand from home buyers, we are only seeing a small increase in sellers who want to sell their home. There is a large backlog of buyers trying to nd a new home and that is keeping the sellers’ prices at historical highs. This is a fantastic time to sell your home or property as the Federal Reserve is likely to raise mortgage interest rates again soon which will cool the buyers down once again as we saw last autumn.
Let’s take a look at what the current real estate market looks like in these cities.
Number of Homes for Sale in Allendale, Blendon, Georgetown, Robinson & Coopersville
In Allendale, there are currently 22 homes on the market. This is up 5% from this time last year. In Blendon there are 4 homes listed for sale which is down 9% compared to 2022. In Georgetown there are 62 homes on the market. In Robinson there are 2 homes on the market. Finally, in Coopersville/Polkton Township there are 3 homes on the market which is down from last year’s numbers.
Home Values & Trends
Overall, it appears that the real estate markets in Allendale, Blendon, Georgetown, Robinson and Polkton /Coopersville are doing well with signi cant growth over this time last year for all ve townships combined (up 6%). With housing prices rising and a slight increase in available homes on the market it appears that now may be a great time to buy or sell a home in these areas of West Michigan! If you're interested in selling or buying a home here, make sure you stay informed about current trends so that you can make an informed decision when it comes time to list or purchase your property!
