Ask the Eye Doctor

WHY DOES MY CONTACT LENS PRESCRIPTION EXPIRE AFTER ONLY ONE YEAR?

The FDA oversees and regulates the safety, effectiveness and manufacturing of all contact lenses. They also define contact lenses as a medical device. This is different, compared to glasses. Contact lenses have an inherent risk with wear that is not present when compared to glasses use. FDA requires specific tests to renew or refit for a new contact lens prescription. If contact lenses are not used as directed there are significant risks that a patient may experience, including severe eye infections.

WHY CAN’T I ORDER A DIFFERENT BRAND OF CONTACTS THAN MY DOCTOR PRESCRIBED?

Each brand of contact lenses has its own unique material, oxygen transmission ability and fitting parameters. Your eye doctor should be able to ensure that you are receiving the best options available based on your type of contact lens wear schedule. Your eye doctor is required by the FDA to verify that the lenses that are prescribed for you fit properly and are appropriate for your type of use. This must be completed before your contact lens prescription can be finalized.

WHY SHOULD I REPLACE MY DISPOSABLE LENSES ON SCHEDULE WHEN THEY STILL FEEL FINE?

The FDA regulates the contact lens manufacturers to label their replacement recommendations based on oxygen transmission. As contact lenses age, their performance starts to diminish, including reduced oxygen transmission through the lenses. Reduced contact lens performance puts your corneas under stress. This opens up opportunities for inflammation, irritation and potential infections. A contact lens that is disposed of in a timely manner, greatly reduces the incidence of contact lens complications. Conversely, overwear and abuse of contact lens use, greatly increases the chance of a severe ocular complication and ocular emergencies.

WHY SHOULD I PURCHASE MY CONTACT LENS SUPPLY FROM MY DOCTOR INSTEAD OF OTHER RETAILER?

It is required that every patient must have access to their contact lens prescription after the prescription has been finalized. Purchasing from the doctor’s site allows for use of insurance benefits, if available, emergency trials when needed and oversight that you are receiving your correct prescription. Our patients are provided a personal ordering portal for prescription access, 24/7 ordering and FREE SHIPPING to your door. Due to privacy, we will NEVER give out your information to a 3rd party.

THEATER PERFORMANCE: THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST

by Oscar Wilde directed by Diane Machin

Want to see a farcical comedy in which the protagonists maintain fictitious personae to escape burdensome social obligations? I do!

Set in Victorian London, this sophisticated yet hilarious satire follows two friends - Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrie - as they concoct witty schemes to win the hearts of Gwendolen Fairfax and Cecily Cardew. The play's title comes from Wilde’s phrase, "to be serious about the importance of being earnest is a very di erent thing from being earnest about its importance,” implying that living life with integrity is more important than taking one’s reputation seriously.
