A JOURNEY to remember

Celebrating Black History in Southwest Illinois

Imagine a time when Black Americans had to secure their freedom with a $1,000 bond. That was a fact of life for former slaves seeking freedom in southwest Illinois in the 1800s. In spite of the hardships, African American culture took root in the region and made an impact on state and U.S. history.

FREEDOM TO EQUALITY

Take a two hour guided shuttle tour that explores the Mississippi Riverfront community of Alton’s legendary place in Black History. The Freedom to Equality Tours tell the tale of Black History through story, song and re-enactments, providing an immersive experience for all. Dive in to the past and learn about the city’s significance in the Underground Railroad movement, meet legendary abolitionists and follow the stories of local Civil Rights leaders who made their mark on the city and the nation.

Sites included on the tour are: Rocky Fork Church, the Elijah P. Lovejoy Monument , Union Baptist Church and the Miles Davis Statue

UNDERGROUND RAILROAD

Southwest Illinois was home to a strong Underground Railroad movement prior to the Civil War. Safe houses could be found in rural Alton, Godfrey and Jerseyville throughout the early 1800s as slaves escaping from Missouri crossed the Mississippi River to the ‘free’ state of Illinois in their journey to freedom. It was a hazardous experience as slave bounty hunters making their living in Illinois were on the lookout for potential escapees.

Network to Freedom Passport holders can have their passport stamped in Alton, an official site on the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program. Passport stamps are available at the Alton Visitor Center and Hayner Genealogy & History Library

EAST ST. LOUIS

Home to a young Miles Davis legendary dancer and choreographer

Katherine Dunham and Olympian Jackie Joyner Kersee the City of East St. Louis has an important Black History story to tell.

Uncover the dark side of the city by learning about the horror-filled 1917 Race Riot which took place when African-Americans were targeted by ethnic European residents in drive-by shootings, arson and beatings following the Great Migration of 1916-17.

East St. Louis also made its cultural mark on U.S. History. Jazz legend Miles Davis grew up in the city where he discovered his love of the trumpet. Visit the House of Miles to learn more about Davis’ early years. The Katherine Dunham Museum in the city houses an outstanding collection of symbolic and functional art. It also displays costumes, photographs and more of Dunham’s legendary career as a dancer, choreographer, scholar, teacher, writer and dance company owner.

TO MARKET to market,

Where can you find vintage treasures, fresh fruits and veggies and handcrafted goods? At local markets, of course. Take your pick of monthly or weekly events.

LITCHFIELD PICKERS MARKET

Held the second Sunday of each month from May through October in downtown Litchfield, hundreds of vendors from across the Midwest line up for the Litchfield Pickers Market. GRAFTON RIVERSIDE FLEA MARKET

Hunt for treasure at the Grafton Riverside Flea Market held in the historic Boat Works Building adjacent to the Loading Dock in Grafton. More than 60 vendors fill the building the last weekend of each month starting in April and running through October

ROOT(ED)

IN collinsville

It certainly won’t win any beauty contests. And it won’t bring home awards for its cool persona. It’s a horseradish root after all, revered (or hated) for its spicy and pungent taste. And 60 percent of this hot commodity is grown in the fertile American Bottoms of southwest Illinois.

People either love or hate this pungent root that is grown and harvested at the nearly one dozen farms in Madison and St. Clair counties in the Great Rivers & Routes region. Collinsville is known as the Horseradish Capital of the World since many of the farms ring the city with their crops. The region produces more than 12 million pounds of the root annually.

Collinsville-based J.R. Kelly Co. is the nation’s top horseradish

supplier and is commonly known as “The Horseradish House.”

The root is used locally in sauces and food prep and has even been incorporated into a horseradish flavored vodka at Old Herald Brewer & Distillery in Uptown Collinsville.

CELEBRATE THE MOTHER OF ALL ROOTS

Each June, the City of Collinsville, known as the Horseradish

Capital of the World, celebrates the horseradish root with the International Horseradish Festival. Main Street in Uptown Collinsville is home to the two day event which features horseradish flavored food and drinks along with games, a family fun area and live music.

Fresh ground horseradish can be purchased during the festival from local growers at this one-ofa-kind event.

The 2024 International Horseradish Festival will be held June 7 & 8 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
