All roads lead to the Great Rivers & Routes region of southwest Illinois! In fact, it’s the only place in America where the Mother Road of Route 66 meets the Great River Road. From east to west, and north to south, adventure awaits along the nation’s famous roadways.

Immerse yourself in nature, outdoor adventures and jaw-dropping scenic views with a road trip worthy jaunt along the Great River Road in southwest Illinois.

BEGIN AT THE BEGINNING:

The adventure begins where the famous Lewis & Clark journey began –in Hartford at the Lewis & Clark State Historic Site. Learn more about this expedition to map the western U.S. Then hike one mile along the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers to the Lewis & Clark Confluence Tower to see the sights from 150-feet high.

ALTON ADVENTURES:

Perched on the banks of the Mississippi River, the City of Alton offers immersive history experiences, family fun, and sporting adventures. Tour local monuments and statues including Robert Wadlow – the World’s Tallest Man; the Elijah P. Lovejoy Monument – tallest monument in Illinois; and the famed Miles Davis Statue. Cool off on the scenic riverfront

at the Alton Splash Pad

Take in a Prospect League summer baseball game with the Alton River Dragons. And view the fabulous Mississippi River from 80 feet high with a free tour of the Melvin Price Locks & Dam at the National Great Rivers Museum. Relax with a meal and signature craft brew at Old Bakery Beer Company, just steps away from the iconic river.

MYTHIC PROPORTIONS:

Alton stands tall when it comes to history. The city was the site of the last, and legendary, LincolnDouglas Debates of 1858. Bronze statues at a brick park commemorate this event. And Alton is home to the larger-than-life Piasa Bird mural painted on the limestone bluffs on the western edge of the city. Was the Piasa real or simply a myth from local Native American cultures?

ESCAPE THE CROWDS:

Looking for a quiet place to unplug and rewind? Discover the Village of Elsah, nestled between the limestone bluffs along the Great River Road. The entire village is on the National Register of Historic Places. Take a walk through the village full of scenic views and natural wonders framing the limestone block homes.

MAKERS MARKET:

Visit the 3 Rivers Community Farm and Stand in Elsah and pick up locally grown fruits and vegetables. This family-owned farm has been named an Illinois Maker and offers some of the best produce around.

PADDLE FUN:

Looking for a water adventure? Dip a paddle in the Mighty Mississippi from a kayak available to rent at locations throughout the region. Ten self-serve kayak kiosks have been installed at six different locations. A total of 40 kayaks are available to rent and launch from the adjacent floating docks. OUTDOOR ADVENTURES:

Spend your time enjoying outdoor adventures in Grafto n. Spend a day in the waters at Raging Rivers Waterpark , the only water park along the Mississippi River; enjoy a UTV Adventure along the limestone river bluffs at Aerie’s Resort where you can also fly over the trees with Grafton

Zipline Adventures, race down the bluffs on the Byway Flyway, ride the Alpine Coaster and take in the views with a ride on the Grafton Skytour ; travel the confluence of the Mississippi and Illinois rivers on the Hakuna Matata excursion boat; and explore Illinois’ largest state park – Pere Marquette State Park

FRESH FISH HERE:

There’s nothing like taking a bite out of a fresh fish sandwich. Find your next favorite fish stand in Grafton where O’Jan’s Fish Stand and Beasley’s Fish Stand serve up fresh fried Buffalo and Catfish sandwiches and if you are really lucky, you can pick up a bowl of Turtle Soup! FERRY AWAY:

Ride across the Mississippi and Illinois rivers on a ferry and take your road trip to a new adventure level. The Grafton Ferry crosses the Mississippi River between Grafton and Missouri. The Brussels Ferry crosses the Illinois River just north of Grafton to Calhoun County. And the Golden Eagle Ferry crosses the Mississippi River between St. Charles, MO and Calhoun County. Take your pick and enjoy a new way to see the sights.

NATURAL WONDERS:

There’s plenty to see and do at Pere Marquette State Park . This 8,000-acre natural wonder offers outdoor and RV camping; a full-service lodge for overnight stays; a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner; and miles and miles of hiking trails. If you enjoy rock climbing, the park has outdoor featured climbing trails on limestone bluffs. Hunting and fishing is also

available. Saddle up for a trail ride at the nearby Pere Marquette Riding Stables

ADVENTURE IS CALLING:

Take the Brussels Ferry to Calhoun County and explore this peninsula bordered by the Mississippi River to the west and Illinois River on the east. Known for its annual peach crop, the county is home to a variety of pick your own farms and farm stands with Calhoun County produce. Stop by the Two Rivers Wildlife Refuge located in the middle of the Mississippi Flyway for views of local wildlife. Dine out at the Wittmond Hotel in Brussels or the Barefoot Restaurant in Hardin where the food is fresh and the views of the historic Joe Page Bridge are memorable. Stop by Kamaroo Farms (appointments requested) and meet the exotic wildlife that call the area home.

TRAVEL TIP

Ahoy matey’s – join the pirate life at Pirates of the Mississippi located along the mighty river near Batchtown in Calhoun County. This restaurant offers indoor and outdoor dining, great home cooked food, drinks and the opportunity to tie off your boat at the river dock or travel by car for the refreshingly laid-back atmosphere. A giant woman pirate welcomes travelers from her perch on the river. A fiberglass pirate takes his own seat at the tables to enjoy the hearty fare. Yo ho ho!

100 Miles of Fabulous Fun on Route 66

Spanning 100 road-trip worthy miles, the Mother Road’s last stretch of highway in Illinois is chock full of nostalgia, charm and quirky adventures. Take your time and spend a few days exploring The Last 100 Miles of Route 66 in Illinois.

DIVE IN

The northernmost section of the Last 100 Miles traverses the small towns and villages that once were major draws for Route 66 travelers. Doc’s Just Off 66, a former 1800’s pharmacy in Girard, serves up hand drawn sodas – just like it has

for over 100 years – along with hearty food. Enjoy a cone at the iconic Whirl-a-Whip, also in Girard. Just down the road, Carlinville is home to the Macoupin County Cannonball Jail, the Million Dollar Courthouse, a collection of Sears Homes and one of the few remaining Mother Road roundabouts. Stop in Litchfield to explore the Litchfield Museum and Route 66 Welcome Center, enjoy a meal at the 100-year-old Ariston Cafe, and pick up sweets for the road at Jubelt’s Bakery & Café. Step back in time and enjoy an outdoor movie at the Route 66 Skyview Drive-In

CHAIN OF ROCKS BRIDGE GRANITE CITY, IL

GIANTS AWAIT

Larger than life attractions welcome travelers to the Last 100 Miles of the Mother Road. Meet a pink elephant, giant ice cream cone, T Rex and more at the Pink Elephant Antique Mall, Twistee Treat Diner and Mother Road Candy Shop in Livingston. The World’s Largest Catsup Bottle Water Tower awaits in Collinsville. And Granite City is home to new giants including a 20-foot tall metal fork, a Make It Toy, a Blue Collar Worker, an Auto Mechanic and a larger than life replica of Granite Ware once produced in the city. (The Granite City attractions will open in June.)

BLAST FROM THE PAST

Follow in the footsteps of the original Route 66 travelers. Make your own pit stops at the Soulsby Service Station in Mt. Olive and the West End Service Station in Edwardsville. Take in a show at the iconic Wildey Theatre in Edwardsville and explore the ancient past at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site

in Collinsville – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stroll through Willoughby Farm in Collinsville and see what life was like on a farm in the 1940s. Walk across the Mississippi River on the Chain of Rocks Bridge – once a Route 66 toll bridge linking Illinois and Missouri.

DAY 1: Ride the River

There’s nothing like riding a bicycle alongside the mighty rivers that flow through southwest Illinois. For those who embrace the pedaling lifestyle, the trails that parallel the Mississippi River offer up the chance to get a birds-eye view of life along the river.

n Confluence Bike Trail

This paved 20.5 mile trail stretches alongside the Mississippi River and just off the Great River Road from Granite City to Alton. Be sure to stop at the nearby attractions: National Great Rivers Museum & Melvin Price Locks & Dam; Lewis & Clark Confluence Tower ; Lewis & Clark State Historic Site; and take the 3-mile connector to the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge where you can ride across the Mississippi River.

n Sam Vadalabene Bike Trail

Ride this 20-mile paved trail between Alton and Grafton which runs alongside the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway. And scenic it is! Towering limestone bluffs and sweeping river views bracket the trail. Be on the lookout for gigantic river barges. Highlights include the Piasa Bird Mural in Alton, the historic Village of Elsah, and a ride through Grafton to Pere Marquette State Park

Take a detour at the Brussels Ferry and ride the ferry across the Illinois River to Calhoun County for even more sparkling country vistas. Visit the Two Rivers National Wildlife Refuge.

DAY 2: Natural Wonders

Immerse yourself in nature with bike rides along the MCT Trails in Madison County. These paved trails wind through woodlands, forests, over creeks and streams and feature 48 bridges, 22 tunnels and a few at-grade crossings. Take your pick of a natural journey.

LAKE LOU YAEGER

n Watershed Trail

This short, 1.3 mile trail connects to the Watershed Nature Center and is a great place to spot local wildlife including white-tailed deer, ducks, geese and more.

n Schoolhouse Trail

Ride along this 15.5 mile paved trail from Edwardsville to Collinsville and enjoy old-growth forests, Horseshoe Lake State Park and local parks in both cities. During the summer take time to relax at Collinsville Aqua Park

n Quercus Grove Trail

Take a ride through four Route 66 communities on this 18.9 mile paved and limestone trail that stretches from Edwardsville north to Staunton. The trail meanders through farms and woodlands and with its prairie views is a great place to see sunsets and watch for wildlife. Stop at the Yellow Dog Café in Worden for refreshments.

In Hamel take a break at iconic Weezy’s or enjoy frozen treats and burgers

at the Route 66 Creamery Staunton is home to the Blackbird Bakery + Café featuring pastries, pies, coffee and great breakfast and lunch menus.

n Nature Trail

This 15-mile paved trail connects the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville campus with Wilson Park and Horseshoe Lake State Park . Enjoy a ride through woodlands, over creeks and waterways. Keep your eyes peeled for deer, cottontail rabbits, and wild turkeys.

n Route 66 Bike Trail at Lake Lou Yeager Take your Route 66 adventure off road on this 6.6 mile trail buried in the hills and woodlands surrounding Lake Lou Yaeger in Litchfield. Stretch your legs and your skills.

Explore the MCT Critters – 12 large-scale, colorful critters can be found along the trails. Meet Cole, a hot pink canary on the Ronald J. Foster Heritage Trail; Jarvis, a 10-foot tall teal bear on the Goshen Trail; Marina, a 12-foot tall yellow heron on the Confluence Trail; Mary a red cardinal on the School House Trail; Newt an orange cat at the junction of the Nature, Nickel Plate and Goshen Trails; Radish, a purple horse on the Schoolhouse Trail; Sandy a lime green lizard on the Nature Trail; and Steele, a blue fox on the Nature Trail. Be on the lookout for four new critters including a blue dog, red squirrel, yellow triceratops and purple bison.

Day 3: City Connections

Explore cities in southwest Illinois by bicycle. Both Alton and Edwardsville have dedicated bike trails through their historic city streets that allows for an in-depth look at history, culture and more.

n Ronald J. Foster Heritage Trail

Follow this 12.2 mile paved trail through Edwardsville and Glen Carbon. Stops include Miner Park and the Glen Carbon Covered Bridge. The trail connects to the Goshen Trail and Nickel Plate Trail and the opportunity to explore even more sites. Stop at the Wooden Nickel in Glen Carbon for refreshments. Explore the historic Yanda Log Cabin

n Nickel Plate Trail While this 28-mile trail runs from New Douglas to Pontoon Beach, it provides a great exploration of Edwardsville. Visit the Edwardsville Children’s Museum, picnic at nearby Leclaire Park , stop by the N.O. Nelson Campus of Lewis & Clark Community College, tour the 1820 Benjamin Stephenson House and more. The combination paved and limestone trails also highlights great natural sites and glimpses of local wildlife.

n Goshen Trail

Take a ride on this 19.5 mile paved trail that features 10 tunnels and eight bridges. One of the bridges is over 175 feet high. This trail will take cyclists through the eastern edge of Collinsville. Drop a kickstand in Edwardsville and sample the tastes of the city at a variety of restaurants including Peel Wood Fired Pizza, Chicken Salad Chick , Twisted Biscuit Brunch Co. and more.

n Alton Heritage Trai l Travel Alton from north to south on this trail that includes elevation changes and travels along quiet residential streets lined with some of Alton’s historic homes. Stop by Duke Bakery for a sweet treat and have lunch at My Just Desserts, Bluff City Grill, or Brown Bag Bistro before exploring the variety of shopping along Broadway and Third Street.

n Riverview Park Loop

This short loop explores the historic side of Alton with a ride through the Christian Hill Historic District up the bluffs to scenic Riverview Park with its spectacular views of the Mississippi River and the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway

n Center Park Trail

Starting at the Alton Multi-Modal Transportation Station (think Amtrak and bus services), this trail winds through north Alton, circles around Alton Square Mall before connecting to historic State Street and the Alton Heritage Trail.

Ready to paddle down the Mississippi River?

Kayak rentals are now available at 10 selfserve Kayak Kiosks at six different locations in the Great Rivers & Routes region. A total of 40 kayaks can be rented at sites that include: Wood River, Horseshoe Lake State Park, Piasa Creek along the Great River Road, Grafton, Pere Marquette State Park and Hardin.

Explore the Larger Than Life Attractions series along Route 66 in Granite City.
