the two existing facilities in East Cobb and Acworth served some 300,000 patient visits last year. Vinings resident and WellStar Chief Pediatric Officer Avril Beckford, M.D., said the new Health Park will be welcomed by physicians as a beautiful destination medical home, and improve access to healthcare for patients in our community. “We are bringing WellStar right here to the neighborhood. The Vinings community has a diversity of ages and the Health Park will serve them all from before they are born to old age,” she said. When referring new parents to pediatricians, “Now these colleagues are close to home.” “We will be expanding the footprint of Cobb Hospital and WellStar, said Kem Mullins, WellStar executive vice president. “We want to improve access to care and control costs. We began with a survey on what services our patients needed most.” He noted that the new facility fill some 85 percent of survey requests. “This is a big day for Smyrna-Vinings Continued on Page 10

The top academic students from all over Cobb were honored Feb. 29 as the Marietta Metro Kiwanis Club presented 27 STAR Students for 2016 at the annual Student Teacher Award Recognition program’s 47th annual awards banquet. The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition program honors Georgia's highest achieving high school seniors and the teachers who have been most instrumental in their academic development. Selection is based on high score on the fall SAT test. Campbell High School named Christina Pendergrast as its STAR Student. She is the daughter of Joseph and Sandra Pendergrast of Marietta. She is in the International Baccalaureate program at Campbell and selected Melyn Roberson as her STAR Teacher. Miss Pendergrast plans to attend the University of Oklahoma on a National Merit Scholarship to study International Business and Management. She inspired me.” Pebblebrook High School named Austin Ford as STAR Student. He is the son of Greg and Robin Ford of Mableton. He hopes to attend Belmont University

Comments By Cathy HAPPINESS IS A FACETIME FROM A GRANDDAUGHTER By Cathy Shattles Lipsett Editor/Publisher

Opening Winter 2016 Ask About Our Exclusive Founders’ Circle! Provident Village at Creekside offers the very best in retirement living while providing assisted living support and memory care designed to make each day easier – and brighter.

The FaceTime ring went off and I rushed to answer, excited that it was our Charlotte family calling. On the screen was four-year-old granddaughter, Addie. “Are you calling me on your own,” I asked? “Yes,” she said. “Mommy is getting Caroline in bed and Daddy is out of town.” “Well, I’m glad you wanted to call me,” I said innocently. “You were third,” she said. “Mimi and Auntie were not available,” she replied. That would be her daddy’s mom and sister. She is so honest. I told her I was glad I was on her list to call even if I was third. She was feeling lonely. “ I want Mommy to play with me but she is taking care of Caroline,” she said. The evening was actually a departure from her routine. Usually, while Katie puts Caroline (almost two) to bed, their daddy, Drew, plays with Addie. But the good news is that she knew how to reach out to her extended family. I was so happy I was the one to talk with her. I’ll take third on the list when it comes to talking to granddaughters. Addie was in a tent she had made under the table and was actually doing well playing on her own. Of course, we’re only talking about 10 minutes or so that she was on her own in the living room and before our conversation ended Katie came into the tent with her. She was close enough to hear Addie and know how she was doing the whole time. It’s hard being a little one and sharing parents with a sibling but it’s even harder to be a parent, balancing time with multiple children. The truth is, life may be easier with only one child, but with more than one there is extra fun and excitement. Sibling rivalries are a fact of life; there is a vying for the parental attention; for that special one on one time. Our own children had rivalry but also a lot of love for each other and delight in playing together. Like mine and Allan’s their lives are richer by having a sibling. I see the same sibling dynamics playing out in our granddaughters. Their parents are already becoming aware, however, that, as the sisters become closer, they can team up for mischief. It is fun to watch as Caroline follows Addie and as Harper follows her big sister

Lilly Bell. Whatever the big sister does the little sister wants to do as well. Fortunately, the younger sisters are very agile and able to keep up. Actually, in some cases, they seem more adventuresome than their big sisters. Harper turns two-years-old this month and Caroline in April. I’m sure that more exciting adventures from the two sets of sisters are in store for all of us.

ROTARY PROJECT AIDS MERCY SHIPS Smyrna Rotary Club recently completed three separate fundraising projects for Cavalry Children’s Home, Food for Veterans in Cobb and Mercy Ships. The first two are somewhat self-explanatory. Smyrna Rotarians contributed nearly $6,000 to Cavalry Children’s Home, located in Powder Springs. The Food for Veterans project resulted in roughly 50 bags stuffed with an average of $10 per bag of non-perishable foods and $300 in cash. “But what is Mercy Ships?” you might wonder. We asked Pauline Rick, its U. S. Public Relations Coordinator. “Mercy Ships owns and operates the Africa Mercy, the world's largest private hospital ship. This floating hospital has five state-of-the-art operating rooms and is

staffed by 400 surgeons, nurses, doctors, physical therapists, cooks, accountants, agriculturalists and others. They come from 45 nations to donate their time and skills to treat, free of charge, an astonishing number of health problems for people in need all along the coast of Africa,” she said. Smyrna Rotary’s was involved with Mercy Ship before. It’s no surprise that then as now; the man behind the project is long-time Smyrna Rotarian Raymond G. Coffman, Manager of Pastoral Care at WellStar Cobb Hospital in Austell. “To date we have raised $1,075,” said Coffman. “Over 50 percent of our world’s population lives within 100 miles of the coast.”

Notes On The News HAMMERIN' HANK, GEORGIA PEACH STATUES WON'T MOVE TO COBB By Allan Lipsett Editor/Publisher The Braves are coming to Cobb next April but Turner Field’s statues of Hank Aaron and Ty Cobb won’t be with them. The iconic statue of Hammerin’ Hank turns out to be owned by the Fulton County Stadium Authority, although they have not announced future plans for it. Beth Marshall, senior director of public relations said the team has documentation to prove its ownership of statues of former Braves pitchers Warren Spahn and Phil Niekro. The Braves have plans to put a new Aaron statue at SunTrust Park. Meanwhile, Ty Cobb, the Georgia Peach, will be left behind. Cobb’s hometown of Royston in northwest Georgia is lobbying to have the statue moved there. The VBA Nomads Since the closing of Social Vinings in late December, The Vinings Business Association has become a nomad, meeting at Hotel Indigo in January and The Georgia Club in February. They may have found a temporary new home in the first floor conference room of Overlook III. The room with a view of downtown Atlanta may be the new home until something else opens up…Speaking of moving, the Greater South Cobb Kiwanis Club ahs found a new meeting place home at O’Charley’s on the EastWest Connector at Austell Road. Social To Steak The word on the street is: The former Social Vinings restaurant spot will soon be filled with a Sandy Springs-based Food 101 spinoff to be called Steak 101. Bringing sizzle to the kitchen will be Chef Joey from SoHo.

Cobb Police Shuffle It’s fruit basket turnover as Cobb Police shift leadership among precincts and add another layer of command that will allow additional community involvement. Beginning this month there will be a Major and Captain at each precinct (serving as manager and assistant manager) after a decade of having just a Captain in top leadership. Captain Jeffrey Adcock of South Cobb’s Precinct 2 was promoted to Major and moves to Precinct 3 in Vinings. Joining him will be Capt. Barry Little. Adcock and Little are both 24 year veterans of Cobb and served in SWAT together. Leading Precinct 2 will be Maj. Stuart VanHoozer, formerly captain at Precinct 3. Assisting him will be Capt. Scott Hamilton, a 20 year veteran coming from Kennesaw’s Precinct 1. Got an item you want to share? Email to news@brightsidecobb.com.

VININGS HEALTH PARK GROUNDBREAKING Continued From Page 1 and South Cobb,” said Joe Brywczynski, senior vice president of WellStar health Park development. “This brings outpatient service to the community we serve. It combines and coordinates services under one roof in a one stop facility. Planned services at the new Vinings Health Park include diagnostic testing, such as medical imaging, lab, cardiac, and sleep studies. It will also house urgent care, physical therapy, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, a pharmacy, community education, health screening and wellness services and a café. Future plans include an outpatient surgery center. These services will be integrated with physician practices, including primary care -- family and internal medicine, pediatrics

and obstetrics/gynecology -- and specialty care in cardiology, pulmonology, rheumatology, endocrinology, allergy/asthma, urology, vascular surgery, ENT, general surgery, orthopedics and neurosurgery. "Patient feedback has been overwhelmingly positive regarding our health parks concept. This fills a need and provides valuable access to health care in our community," said Amy Carrier, president of WellStar Cobb hospital. "We anticipate the same level of care and positive patient experience at the Vinings Health Park in order to become the patient’s and family’s destination point and first choice for all their outpatient services." The Vinings Health Park is located at 4441 Atlanta Rd. SE. near I-285 and Cumberland Pkwy.

SMYRNA GIRL SCOUTS TRAVEL WORLD IN 2 HOURS Each year on February 22, World Thinking Day, girls participate in activities and projects with global themes to honor their sister Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in other countries. World Thinking Day not only gives girls a chance to celebrate international friendships, but is also a reminder that Girl Scouts of the USA is part of a global community—one of nearly 150 countries with Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. This World Thinking Day, Girl Scouts in Smyrna gathered on Sunday, February 21, 2016, at American Legion Post 160 to connect with each other, community supporters, and with Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world. Troops from the Jonquil Service Unit, based in Smyrna, (aligning primarily with the Campbell High School attendance zone) prepared exhibits for the countries of Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Jamaica, Japan, Italy, and France. Girls in attendance – “travelers” – were able to taste food, learn a few words of the language, participate in activities, learn what Girl Scouts do in those countries, and get their passports stamped. In addition to the eight countries represented by booths, girls experienced life in four other countries.

• The first stop, Cuba! Girls learned about the rich origins of Salsa dancing and how to do a few dance steps with the help of Niya Patel Thomas. Ms. Thomas along with her husband Allen owns “Rhythmz and Motion,” a Smyrna dance studio. • Paraguay was the next stop with Brant Campbell, a Girl Scout parent and former member of the Peace Corps. Campbell shared with the girls the purpose and history of the Peace Corps and talked about his work in Paraguay and what it was like to live and serve there. • India was next with Kim Brinson, owner of Atlas Yoga. Brinson shared a brief history of yoga and led the girls through some basic yoga techniques. • The last country visited was China. Noel Plaugher, owner of Moore’s of Atlanta Martial Arts, introduced the girls to some basic self-defense moves of Shou Shu (sounds like “show shoe”), a Chinese style of Martial Arts derived from Kung Fu. The 2016 World Thinking Day theme was “Connect” where focus was on exploring and celebrating the meaningful connections that make our lives better – whether to the people closest to us, to a place we care about, or to Girl Guide or Girl Scout friends on the other side of the world.

Free and open to the public. There will be door prizes and local restaurants and caterers offering samples of their food.

This semi-annual event is free and open to the public and great door prizes will be awarded throughout the event. To sponsor, exhibit or donate a door prize, Call Joseph at 770-595-2163 or visit smyrnabusiness.org Proceeds will benefit scholarships at Campbell and Osborne High Schools.

Judy McMillan, a longtime homeowner in the Paces Green community, has been supporting Girl Scouting and Boy Scouting in the Smyrna area for more than 10 years by always purchasing Boy Scout Camp Cards and Pop Corn, and the Girl Scout Cookies and Fall Nuts & Candy products. Partnering with Courtney Waybright, her Girl Scout Cookie supplier for the last seven years, Judy led the effort to collect enough donations from the Paces Green neighborhood to give one box of cookies to the 48 fire fighters and staff members of Cobb County Fire Station 4 and the 98 police officers and other staff members of Cobb County Police Precinct 3. Presenting the cookies (in the front row) are Judy McMillan with her counseling dog, Angel, Cheryl Waybright and Courtney Waybright. Police Captain Stuart VanHoozer and Fire Lieutenant Robert Chrisner coordinated the presentation Feb. 24, at the station. “This is a very nice gesture from the people we serve, we are very thankful for this ‘sweet’ donation,” said Police Lt. Jorge Mestre. Judy noted that she is “very glad to have a great team of police and fire responders so close to and so responsive to the Paces Green community.” Cheryl Waybright, Courtney’s mom and also the Service Unit Director for the Jonquil Service Unit in Smyrna, said that “it is always great to see girls leverage cookie sales to make broader connections in the community showing that selling cookies is not just about the small monetary commission the girls earn but more about building a team and relationships with people in the community.” The Jonquil Service Unit comprises 19 troops serving more than 250 girls in the Smyrna area.
