Comments By Cathy BALANCING ON ONE FOOT VERSUS BALANCING LIFE By Cathy Shattles Lipsett Editor/Publisher Balance! It’s a physical act and a state of mind. I’m working on both types. Recently I have been going to physical therapy because of a big toe that wouldn’t bend properly. It wasn’t broken but had a problem with a tendon. It turns out the toe is important to body balance. My toe is bending better now but my therapist, Erin at PT Solutions, is still working on my balance. A couple of falls last year suggested that my balance is off. I think it was walking too fast on uneven sidewalks and at least nothing was broken. I’m making progress but still not where I need to be. Try standing on one foot on a cushion for a minute. It sounds easy but… As I work on my physical balance, I have thought a lot about the overall balance in my life. I balance our bank accounts; that’s an easy use of the balancing activity. And I try to eat a balanced diet – something I’m not really great at. But there are more difficult aspects of life to balance. Early in life we face the balance game. As students, how do we balance studies with extra-curricular activities? Every mother knows that once her baby is born, her life is totally thrown out of balance – how to make time and attention for the baby, for the husband, and yes, importantly, for self? There is the balance of worrying and letting go. I’m a pro at the worrying but not so balanced at the accepting. There is the balance of keeping a clean house with everything in its place and having a house that is lived-in and comfortable. How do we balance work and play; friendships and family; church and family; civic involvement and family and work? It’s easier to balance on one foot than to balance all of the other things in our life. I have to continually ask myself “what are the priorities in my life?” Balance with living is not like a scale or even like standing on one leg. It’s sometimes 50-50 or 30-70 or 60-40. What is the end result? With the PT training, the goal is to keep from falling and strengthen my muscles. The end result from a balanced life is to be healthy and happy; to enjoy life; to handle stress; to be a complete person. And yes, balancing on one foot is less complicated than balancing a whole life; but not nearly as rewarding.

The City of Smyrna celebrated Arbor Day by planting two trees and dedicating a new park at North Cooper Lake Park. “This is a place for our kids to come and play,” said Smyrna Mayor Max Bacon. “It’s another piece of what makes Smyrna a great place to live. Families can get together here and enjoy themselves.” The park includes swings, a climbing fort, slide and a balance beam. The playground equipment cost about $50,000 to construct. Some of the equip-

ment is made of Black Locust wood from the Czech Republic that is long lasting and decay-proof. After opening the park, Bacon, city officials and members of Keep Smyrna Beautiful marked Arbor Day by planting two Autumn Blaze Maples at the park to offer shade. Smyrna has been a Tree City USA city for 15 years, having met standards established by the Arbor Day Foundation and the National association of State Foresters.

VININGS' 9TH BUSINESS EXPO IS MARCH 20

Admission and parking are free and the event is open to the public. More than 30 exhibitors will be featured with information on Vinings-area businesses, restaurants and events. There will also be free food samples, door prizes, drawings and giveaways, including restaurant gift certificates and a cash bar. “The Vinings Expo is in its ninth year and is an opportunity for Vinings area businesses and restaurants to showcase their products and services to a different audience they may have not had access to,” Christian said. “The Expo draws people from all over Cobb and the north side of Atlanta.” Exhibit tables are available for $125 VBA member and $195 nonmember and include a covered exhibit table and chair per exhibitor. Baseball with visitors. Griffin’s group led a series of fun educational math and science activities for the kids who attended the Atlanta Braves’ Chop Fest 2018 at SunTrust Park. “Kids learn best when they can relate to the content,” said Griffin teacher Kate Fites. “Even parents joined in [at Chop Fest]. It was a great learning experience for everyone.” Last spring, Griffin teachers participated in the Atlanta Braves Science of Baseball program, which provides hands-on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) curriculum for sixth through eighth grade students in Georgia. Melissa Barlow, one of Griffin’s Science of Baseball teachers, incorporated the program during the school’s new summer camp. Barlow, joined by Fites, also presented the program to teachers at the Latino Youth Conference at Kennesaw State University. Because of the teachers’ extensive work with the Science of Baseball, the Atlanta Braves invited the teachers and their students to attend Chop Fest and help educate kids in attendance. After watching the Griffin team work with the kids at Chop Fest, representatives from Cobb County Public Library System invited the Griffin team to help implement the Science of Baseball activities during the summer at Switzer Library in Marietta. “The Science of Baseball is powerful for students because they’re connecting math and science to the real world, and to a fun game,” added Barlow.

Notes On The News WELLSTAR’S AMY CARRIER LEAVING FOR VIRGINIA POST Amy Carrier, president of WellStar Cobb Hospital in Austell, will be leaving to serve as COO of Richmond-based Bon Secours Virginia, a newly created leadership role. Carrier has led the Austell hospital since October of 2015. She and her husband live in Smyrna. In this newly created leadership role, Ms. Carrier will oversee acute care operations for Bon Secours Virginia’s eight hospitals. Bon Secours created the new role to “streamline operations and encourage growth” across Bon Secours Virginia. Ms. Carrier will assume the new role in April. Oakdale Library Safe With talk of Cobb closing libraries due to a budget shortfall, it’s interesting to note that Lewis A. Ray Library in Oakdale is probably safe despite being the third least used facility in the county. The saving grace is the approval of Phase III of the West Village development on Atlanta Road at I-285which Cob Commissioners approved in December. According to Commissioner Bob Ott, the additional commercial and apartment construction includes space for the library. The developer will donate 3,000 square feet in the new development for $1 a year rent. In addition they will pay the demolition cost of the current building and turn it into a pocket park. Riverview Landing Update Atlanta-based Prestwick Companies will build the first housing units along the Chattahoochee River near the dock of the Riverview Landing riverfront project in Smyrna. They were to break ground by the end of January on the project to be known as The Eddy at Riverview Landing, a 310unit, multi-family development that will include a community coffee shop, a riverfront restaurant, co-work space, and leasing office. Upon completion, Riverview Landing will feature a collection of single family homes, townhomes and apartments The website advises that apartment are coming in the summer of 2019. Prestwick’s activities will include ded-

icating a 12-acre, public waterfront park with public parking for Smyrna residents to enjoy. SMYRNA, GA 30126 At long last, after many years of meetings, calls and letters, Ward 7 Smyrna Councilman Ron Fennel reports that the U.S. Postal Service finally granted a request for a waiver for all Smyrna residents who live in the 30126 zip code using Mableton as their address. The postal service lingo is “Last Line” permission, which allows for all residents within an affected zip code who choose, to use the local jurisdiction name in conjunction with the current zip code. Translated, that means that all residents of 30126 who live in the city of Smyrna and pay a Smyrna tax bill are now eligible to use SMYRNA, GEORGIA 30126. This primarily affects Vinings Estates and a few nearby neighborhoods, along with the campus of Whitefield Academy. Residents should have received a formal notification from the USPS in February. Fennell said he has been working on this change since he first took office. Prior to that, Mayor Max Bacon, as Smyrna postmaster had lobbied for the change. Smyrna FUMC, Tillman To Merge Two Smyrna churches within a mile of each other will be merging later this year. The 170-year-old First United Methodist Church will bring Tillman United Methodist, serving since 1954, into its fold this spring, according to pastors of each church. Both churches are on Concord Road in Smyrna. The Rev. Melissa Mobley is pastor at Tillman and the Rev. Dereck Porter leads SFUMC. Worship attendance at each church is 43 at Tillman and more than 1,000 at Smyrna First. Tillman will be used as a “community service campus” on its nine acres and will hold legacy Sunday worship services monthly. Rev. Mobley said she will wait and see about her future pastorate. Both pastors agreed that they hope to see the fall barbecue and yard sale at Tillman continued.

Whitefield Academy's Boy Scout Troop 554 has 4 new Eagle Scouts: Crawford Folk, Will Thomas, Cannon Crompton and Everett Sinclair.

WHITEFIELD PRESENTS 4 EAGLE SCOUTS Whitefield Academy's Boy Scout Troop 554 has four new Eagle Scouts. Crawford Folk, Will Thomas, Cannon Crompton and Everett Sinclair recently completed the rigorous Eagle requirements and were conferred scouting's highest rank in recent ceremonies. Crawford Folk, 17, is the son of Gretchen and Doug Folk of Vinings. For his Eagle Scout project he built two large waterproof storage boxes for the Whitefield Softball Team. William Thomas, 16, is the son of Linda and Allen Thomas of Smyrna/Mableton. Thomas' Eagle project consisted of building and painting garbage can holders for Whitefield Academy’s new tennis complex.

Cannon Crompton, 17, is the son of Brett and Julie Crompton of Smyrna. For his Eagle project Crompton built a fire pit at Smyrna Presbyterian Church, to complement the outdoor activities area there. Everett Sinclair, 16, is the son of Michael and Connie Sinclair of Smyrna. For his Eagle Project he measured mileage, constructed and installed mile markers for Whitefield's new Cross Country trail, and built two benches for coaches. The Eagle Scout rank carries a special significance both in and outside of Scouting. These four Scouts join other prominent Americans including former President Gerald Ford, astronaut Neil Armstrong, filmmaker Steven Spielberg, and former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. MURAL HIGHLIGHTS JONQUIL CITY

Smyrna artist Kristen Ramsey stands with her tribute to Smyrna, the Jonquil City, placed on the east side of Vickery Hardware on Concord Road. The bright yellow and black mural is based on the design of a vintage 1898 seed packet. Ramsey worked with Vickery Hardware owner Susan Harlan who sponsored the mural. It is hand painted with sign painter’s enamel. She is a selftaught artist and used space at the Indie Art Alliance to paint the piece. Prints of the mural are available for sale at Vickery Hardware, 881 Concord Road, Smyrna.
