CLASS OF 2018 EARNS DIPLOMAS AT GRADUATION CEREMONIES

High school graduation ceremonies saw seniors don caps and gowns as they picked up their diplomas throughout southern Cobb in May. Whitefield Academy recently hosted the class of 2018 graduation ceremony at the Church of the Apostles in Buckhead, graduating 59 seniors.

Pebblebrook High School had 520 graduates, as some 90 percent of the senior class earned diplomas. Seniors also received in excess of $13.5 million in scholarships.

Campbell High School saw some 622 seniors graduate. At least one will be attending an Ivy League college.

South Cobb High School had 460 graduates for the class of 2018 Of the more than 8,000 Cobb County School District seniors graduating as part of

the Class of 2018, about 76 percent will continue their educational journey in college.

"Every one of the 8,000 graduates who are walking across stages this week have success stories to tell," said Superintendent

Chris Ragsdale. "Whether the next step in their journey is college or career, each student's success is a reflection of their hard work, their family's involvement, and their teachers’ dedication."

BABY GRAND JOINS RANKS OF PLAYFUL PIANOS IN SMYRNA Smyrna Arts & Cultural Council and Smyrna Parks & Recreation partnered with the Campbell High School Art department on the second Playful Pianos of Smyrna now on display in the Market Village.

Susan Thayer, Cobb County Board of Education member, generously donated the baby grand piano.

Art teachers Lisa Underwood and Michael Ross worked with some 35 CHS Students, for more than 70 hours of painting to create a Keith Haring inspired, Smyrna specific, baby grand piano.

The intricate layout of the design incorporates Smyrna’s signature Jonquil flower,

a reference to the new SunTrust park, strips of bacon to honor the mayor, and a plethora of dancing figures fueled by DJ Dog.

The piano was installed under the large square pavilion in front of Smyrna City Hall on W. Spring Street.

By Cathy Shattles Lipsett Editor/Publisher Tucked into a side street next to the high school, in just a corner of the city’s recreation center, the Hapeville Library was a hot, musty room of pure joy. Especially in the summer this was my favorite place to visit.

My mother would take my sister and me to the library often during the summer and give us free reign to browse the shelves and pick books for summer reading. There was no air conditioning, no card catalog, just books, shelves and shelves of books.

I remember how happy I was to take these treasures home to my non—air conditioned home and settle down to read.

With some of my childhood friends, I set up my own library in my house, exchanging our personal books with one another. Later, I would work in this public library as a page – my first job the summer of my high school junior year. Now, with a house full of books and eBooks on my IPad, I still regularly visit both the Smyrna and the Cobb Public Libraries. Reading is my passion, my hobby, my happiness.

Which brings me to the reason for this walk down memory lane – the Little Free Library. These little boxes of joy are springing up in all kinds of places. Our daughter, Katie, has a registered Little Free Library in her front yard in Charlotte, built by her father-in-law Eric Long. Our neighborhood put one in on the entry lot to our subdivision.

One that has been around the longest (thought to be the second one in the state) is located at Vickery Hardware on Concord Road, Smyrna. And someone not nice at all vandalized it recently. How could someone damage a library? Susan Harlan, owner of Vickery Hardware, put out an appeal for books to replace those damaged and our community came through royally. Her Little Library, now restocked, is well used by people in the Smyrna area.

many activities at the libraries in our area: Smyrna’s City Library; the Cobb libraries in Vinings and Mableton. This month at the Smyrna Library there is Mozart Mondays for ages 5-7; teen time for ages 13-18; Creativity Club for ages 8-12; infant and toddler story time; preschool story time and Lego Club and more.

Then there are the book stores. One of my favorites is the Book Worm on Marietta Street in Powder Springs, owned by Susan Smelser. It’s a great place to shop for gently used books.

Electronic books are nice, but there is something so satisfying about a printed book, holding it, savoring the words, making it a friend.

There are many quotes about books, but one of my favorites is by Emily Dickinson, who wrote so many years ago: “There is no Frigate like a book to take us lands away.” Books are knowledge; they are an escape; they are friends

SOUTH COBB ROTARY PRESENTS SCHOLARSHIPS

The Rotary Club of South Cobb presented two scholarships in April. Above, Nathan Andre from South Cobb High School was recipient of the $2,000 Clark/Collin Scholarship at Chattahoochee Tech. The vocational scholarship has been a club tradition for more than 20 years. The scholarship is named for Rotarians Dr. Frank Clark and Dan Collins. Andre is planning to become a physical therapist. While King Springs Elementary School teachers were busy preparing fifth grade students for their move to middle school, members of the School Council worked to pave a literal path to Griffin Middle School.

During a panel discussion with parents in the fall, the School Council determined that there was a need to fix up the walkway that connects the elementary school to the middle school.

This project was spearheaded by Liz Li and Whitney Taylor, parent representatives on the KSE School Council, and Eric Dennis, a co-chair of KSE's PTA's campus beautification committee. And of course the generous grant from Keep Smyrna Beautiful made the project possible.

“Dozens of kids walk behind KSE to GMS every day to avoid busy traffic on King Springs Road as they walk to and from school,” said Whitney M. Taylor, a parent volunteer. Students also use the path during the day when walking to events like field day. “However, the makeshift path that bridged the campuses was muddy, ugly, and posed a few tripping hazards including rebar sticking up from the ground in some places.”

On a Saturday in more than a dozen parent volunteers, including KSE principal Dr. Cindy Szwec, and a number of student volunteers worked throughout the morn-

ing and into the afternoon to assemble an improved path.

To help fund the improvements to the pathway, the King Springs School Council applied for and won a $1,000 grant from Keep Smyrna Beautiful. They used the grant funds and a small amount from the PTA to install timber edging and crushed granite along the path. They also added two-dozen shrubs and solar lights. One school family donated three Japanese maples.

CELLPHONE DRIVING BAN BEGINS JULY 1 Georgia House Bill 673 regarding the use of electronic devices while driving goes into effect July 1. Distracted driving was found to be the leading cause of accidents.

Cobb Police offer these reminders to drivers to help comply with this new law: “The new law states that you cannot support any wireless device with any part of your body. This means that you: • CANNOT hold it in your hand • CANNOT lay it in your lap • CANNOT hold it against your ear with your shoulder Additionally, the law addresses further uses of the phone while driving: • You CANNOT watch or record a video • You CANNOT type, send, or read any text based communication You MAY use your phone if legally parked. This does not include stopped at a light or stop sign, only legally parked in areas such as parking lots or driveways.

You MAY use your phone as GPS but you MUST set it up before you begin driving and are legally parked. If you need to change your route, you must be legally parked.

Important things to remember: • Citizens may handle an electronic device while driving if they are: Reporting a traffic accident, medical emergency, fire, crime, delinquent act, or hazardous road condition.

• Law enforcement officers are exempt from the law as long as they are performing their official duties.

Wolfe Center Activities The Wolfe Adult Recreation Center and Therapy Pool, 884 Church St., Smyrna, is open to anyone 55 years of age and older.

The Jonquil City Kiwanis Club presented its annual scholarships to high school and college students in May. The $1,000 scholarship continues each year through the student’s college career. Notes On The News PRIMARY ELECTION RESULTS IN RUNNOFFS, SURPRISES

POLICE RIDE IN NATIONAL UNITY TOUR

Several police officers from Cobb County rode in the Police Unity Tour in May. Participating were Cobb Officer Amy Worthington, Sgt. Jeff Perry and Major Jeff Adcock, along with Marietta Police Department Sgt. Gretchen Ingram and Kennesaw State University Sgt. Becki Hawkins. The Police Unity Tour was organized in May of 1997 where 18 police officer bicyclists rode from Florham Park, NJ to the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial (NLEOM) in Washington DC in order to raise $18,000 for the Memorial. The Tour raises awareness for law enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty and to raise funds for the NLEOM, which receives no public funding. Twenty-two years later the Police Unity Tour has raised over $25,000,000 for the National Law Enforcement Memorial and this year the Police Unity Tour raised $2,800,000 for the NLEOM. Each officer had to raise $1,900 participate and rode 250 miles on their bicycles over the three days from Somerset, N.J. to Washington D.C. Along the route the officers stopped in Philadelphia at the location where Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel Faulkner was murdered in 1981.

NORMAN NAMED TO HEAD COBB CSB

Foster Norman has been named Chief Executive Officer of the Cobb and Douglas Community Services Boards effective June 1. He comes to Cobb with more than 40 years of experience in Public Health and Human Services with 16 of those years operating as a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in North Carolina.

Norman has managed and executed budgets of more than $180 million while providing leadership to over 300 employees. For the past two years, Norman has Foster Norman served as the senior organizational leadership consultant for MTM Services, providing consultation on an array of topics covering most major aspects of an organization’s operations for agencies through the United States, some which are in Georgia.

The Board Chairs of each CSB issued a joint statement welcoming Foster Norman as Chief Executive Officer.

Dr. Charles Craton and Dr. Carol Holtz, Chairs of the Cobb and Douglas CSB respectively, said “we, as well as our respective board members and staff, are delighted to have Foster Norman as our new CEO. With great pleasure we look forward to his leadership in very near future.

His background preparation and rich previous employment experiences will be a great asset for all of us in our community, and particularly for our clients."

A native of Virginia, he completed his secondary education at the University of

North Carolina Chapel Hill. He felt compelled to Human Services and began his career working as a direct care professional with the intellectual and developmental disabilities population. While continuing his education, both academically and operationally, he expanded his clinical purview to Mental Health/Substance Abuse service delivery and management. He then became a Licensed Psychological Associate. Happily, he has two grown children and two grandchildren.

As he prepares to assume the CEO role, Mr. Norman said, “I am pleased and excited to have been named the Executive Director of the Cobb and Douglas Community Services Boards. I look forward to working closely with the staff, boards and the communities at large to provide high quality mental health, Intellectual-Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Use Disorder services at a reasonable cost to the taxpayer.”

Sandra Bullock won the Democratic Party primary in House District 40, ahead of Erick Allen for a seat being vacated by Rep. Rich Golick.

But after the win, she bowed out, citing health concerns.

Once Bullock's withdrawal becomes official, Allen will become the nominee - and go up against Republican pick Matt Bentley.

In Smyrna, and in some state races, the campaign is not over.

Smyrna voters will choose a new council member in Ward 6 in a runoff election July 24.

Idella Moore finished first in a crowded field, with Tim Gould in second place to force the runoff.

In the District 2 School Board contest, Dr. Jaha Howard defeated Angela Pressley.

In congressional races: • Rep. David Scott (D-13) will face David Callahan, winner of the Republican primary, and Libertarian candidate Martin Cowen in November for the 13th District congressional seat.

• Lucy McBath will face Kevin Abel in a runoff for the Democratic nomination for Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District.

Incumbent Rep. Karen Handel (R-6) was unopposed.

In House District 39 State Rep. Erica Thomas, D-Austell, survived a primary challenge from three fellow Democrats, defeating Sheila Edwards and Tray S. Deadwyler. She will face Republican James “J.W.” Morrow Jr., in November.

Leah Aldridge won the Georgia Senate Republican primary and will face state Sen. Jen Jordan, D-Atlanta, in November for the Senate 6 post.

Windy Hill Lane Closures Drivers on Windy Hill Road from South Cobb Drive to Atlanta Road in Smyrna will be dealing with lane closures through the summer due to an AT&T duct relocation.

The eastbound right lane of Windy Hill will be fully closed in 1,000-ft segments with lane shifts utilizing the two-way median turn lane for day and night work through the beginning of August. Access will be maintained to local businesses along Windy Hill Road. Expect delays.

Police Rescue Church Bus Cobb Police Precinct 3 (Cumberland area) officers responded to a disabled vehicle call April 28 and found a church bus traveling from Tennessee had broken down near SunTrust Park. A replacement bus was on the way from Tennessee but was several hours away.

The bus passengers were all senior citizens and the air conditioning was not working on the bus.

The rising heat and delay without air conditioning, food and water was a significant concern. The officers of Precinct 3 worked with community partners in the area to find a solution to the problem.

The Atlanta Marriott Galleria agreed to send their shuttle bus to make several trips to take all of the seniors from the disabled bus to the Folks Restaurant on Windy Hill Rd to eat and await their replacement bus.

Precinct 3 Officers Hamilton and Gaddis, and Mary Ann Galvis from the Atlanta Marriott Galleria, used creative problem-solving teamwork to resolve the situation.

WellStar Economic Impact WellStar hospitals in Cobb County, which include Kennestone, Windy Hill and Cobb Hospital, generated over $2.5 billion in economic impact.

While Kennestone in Marietta is the largest at $1.6 million, according to a report by the Georgia Hospital Association (GHA), the two southern Cobb campuses made up some 36 percent of the county total.

WellStar Cobb contributed $746 million and Windy Hill showed $149 million.

MUST BEGINS SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM

As summer begins, people often scramble to plan vacation time activities, yet the most meaningful activity of all might be right here at home… helping others.

MUST Ministries is launching its 23rd year of Summer Lunch, a program that brings communities together in seven counties to feed children in need. “We plan to serve 6,000 - 7,000 children every weekday by providing a nutritious lunch made and distributed by hundreds of compassionate volunteers,” said Kristin Harrison, Summer Lunch Coordinator at MUST. Well over 2.5 million lunches have been served since the program began with just 25 lunches a day. Last summer, MUST provided 273,815 meals thanks to hundreds of volunteers working in the program and making lunches.

"Recruiting volunteers is a priority as we head to our first day of Summer Lunch on May 29, " Harrison said, "and we encourage everyone to get involved. Feeding precious children in your community is not only life changing for the kids, but also is life-changing for the volunteer.”

MUST is searching for several roles, including checker/packers who go to a host site for only two hours to assure the fresh-

ness and accuracy of each lunch. They count the lunches and pack them in boxes to load in the delivery cars and vans. Anyone age 10 or older can help, and these young volunteers must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Next the drivers and riders deliver the meals to apartment complexes, mobile home communities, parks and camps where large numbers of children need a lunch.

The final need is for volunteers who will pledge to make lunches. A lunch includes a sandwich, two side items and a drink.

Children receive turkey, ham, bologna and peanut butter/jelly sandwiches during the summer. Those who cannot make meals can donate supplies such as food, paper lunch bags, juice boxes, sealable sandwich bags, healthy snacks (applesauce cups, apples, granola bars), unopened sliced lunch meats, jelly (grape is best), unopened cheese slices individually wrapped and plastic gloves.

Each county has a Summer Lunch Coordinator who should be emailed for details on where to drop off food or sign up to volunteer. In South Cobb County (Powder Springs, Austell) call 770-8816619 or email scobbsummerlunch@mustministries.org.

Drew Justice, a Whitefield Academy Sixth grader, recently represented his school in the National Elementary Chess Championship held in Nashville, Tennessee. The tournament, sponsored by the U.S. Chess Federation, draws more than 2,000 players from around the country in a four-day event that begins with a 6-round blitz (fast chess) tournament and concluding with a 7-round standard tournament. Justice had an outstanding performance in the K-6 blitz tournament, claiming first place.

Overall, Justice holds four national titles in chess: 2013 K-1 Co-Champion, 2015 K-3 Blitz Co-Champion, 2017 K-6 Bughouse Champion, 2018 K-6 Blitz Co-Champion (1st place on tiebreaks). In the 2018 regular tournament, Justice came close to securing another national title. After winning his first five matches, he played very well in round 6 to earn a draw. Then, still tied for first place going into the final round, he was outplayed by a strong opponent from California and ended the regular tournament in 8th place.

There are three types of chess championships: regular (90 minutes per player), blitz (5 minutes per player), and bughouse (partner chess).

Justice is a chess “Expert” (2000 U.S. rating), and hopes to get to “National Master” (2200 rating) by the end of middle school. He has been an avid chess player since he was three years old. In addition to chess, Justice enjoys playing basketball, football, and looks forward to being in the marching band next school year. He enjoys the challenge of playing other top players

from around the country, and also teaching chess to younger children at Whitefield through after school programs and summer camps.

FOOD TRUCKS ARRIVE IN SMYRNA, AUSTELL Food Truck Tuesdays are underway at Taylor-Brawner Park in Smyrna.
