All Hallows Catholic College Fairtrade Activities 2012-2013

Fairtrade products – everyday use ‘Innovate Catering’ continues to supply all of its hot drinks and some of its cold drinks as Fairlytraded. It uses other Fairtrade products such as flour on an adhoc basis and it is the Steering Committee’s aim to encourage further use of Fairtrade products particularly in the staffroom.

Many staff however do not avail themselves of the staffroom, preferring to take working breaks at their desks.

All Food Tech lessons include Fairtrade products particularly chocolate, flour and now, dried fruit.

Fairtrade chocolate bars are on sale during Fairtrade Fortnight provided the College Litter traffic light system shows green.

All hot drinks supplied at Parents Evenings, staff Inset meetings and staff twilight sessions are Fairtrade.

Autumn Term 2012 Throughout the year lessons are delivered across the curriculum, rather than just focusing on Fairtrade Fortnight. For example, KS3 Design and Technology students in the opening weeks of the Autumn Tern must work in teams to design and make a ‘building block kit’ which can be manufactured using sustainable materials in a Developing Country, a Lesson first introduced in 2009.

Following a lesson on Ethical Fashion, KS4 Textiles students were tasked with researching the ‘People Tree’ company and links with Fairtrade producers. (See attached Ppt) KS3 RE students, in pairs, had to produce an All Hallows Fairtrade leaflet or poster, explaining why we are a Fairtrade school and why we should buy Fairtrade products (See attached Lesson Plan)

Spring term 2013 Fairtrade Fortnight and ‘Time for a Change at All Hallows All Assembles during Fairtrade Fortnight focused on the challenges facing Fairtrade growers, especially during this global economic downturn. Sixth Form students from VI JAW led their Assembly on the issues facing the Toledo Cacao Growers’ Association. The assembly concluded with a beautiful Fairtrade prayer (see attached Ppt)

The Time 2 Change Project was celebrated in the Romero Centre with 10 local primary schools sending their winning teams to compete in a 'final showdown'. The challenge set was to design a mode of transport for a named foreign country that was fit for purpose in being able to

transport Fairtrade products, taking into account terrain, climate etc. They had to purchase resources and materials using the appropriate foreign language and also redesign the country's flag to incorporate a Fairtrade theme.

The Overall Winner for 2013 was St. Gregory's, with Gawsworth as Runners Up and The Best Team Log Award went to St. Alban's. The competition, which started back in September 2012, has raised over £2,000 for more than 15 different charities.

Summer Term 2013 - Fairtrade Faith Breakfast (new activity)

Students and staff at All Hallows Catholic College in Macclesfield highlighted the importance of putting Christian faith values into action through a ‘Fairtrade Faith Breakfast’, which took place on Friday 10th May. The breakfast was organised to mark International World Food Day and to give thanks for the work of the Fairtrade movement, which has its origins in Christian social action for justice. MP for Macclesfield, David Rutley attended the event together with Abby

Wood of Cre8, Youth & Community Project worker, together with local ministers. Sue Bownas, Catholic Diocesan CAFOD Manager provided information on the IF campaign which is asking governments to tackle the problem of world hunger where 1 in 8 people go hungry. The Fairtrade breakfast was provided by the Fairtraders Co-operative, a community co-operative in West Yorkshire. Breakfasters were connected to the idea of solidarity and how Fairtrade improves the lives of poor people in producer-communities through the Fairtrade premium.

Raisins from Afghanistan, Mango from Burkina Faso, Chocolate spread, Strawberry Jam, QI Tea from China, Coffee from Bolivia, Calypso Fruit Juices and Geo Muesli drew out the idea that we are all connected to each other in what is often called ‘the global village.’
