Prayer for Mothers' Day God our Creator, we pray: for new mothers, coming to terms with new responsibilities; for expectant mothers, wondering and waiting; for those who are tired, stressed or depressed; for those who struggle to balance the tasks of work and family; for those who are unable to feed their children due to poverty; for those whose children have physical, mental or emotional disabilities; for those who raise children on their own; for those who have lost a child; for those who care for the children of others; for those whose children have left home; and for those whose desire to be a mother has yet to be fulfilled.

Specialism Success Fourteen eager Year 12 Career Ready Students enjoyed their third Master Class led by Steve Bridge, Regional Manager of The Career Ready Programme this week. This was followed by an 'ice-breaker' session with their new mentors for four of the students. Other students will meet their mentors next week, when Steve Bridge is due to return to the Romero Centre with another group of mentors all drawn from local businesses. Students will work with their mentors over the next 12 months and benefit from advice, meetings and visits to places of work.

As the exam season is approaching and our students are preparing for A-Level and GCSE exams here is a tip to help your son/daughter in their preparation: Use Mind Maps to Connect Ideas If you find it difficult to remember tons of new study notes, Mind Maps may be the key to improving your memory. The theory behind mind mapping explains that making associations by connecting ideas helps you to memorise information easier and quicker. There are much more benefits to using Mind Maps for learning including being able to map out your curriculum, develop GCSE concepts in-depth and create sample exam answers.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS Over the last week of College attendance was as follows: Year 7 - 97.0% (up 0.8% on last week) Year 8 - 95.6% (up 1.9%) Year 9 - 95.2% (down 0.2%) Year 10 - 96.6% (down 0.3%) Year 11 -94.9% (down 0.4%) Year 12 - 93.9% (down 4.1%) Year 13 - 95.3% (up 1.1%) This was a mixed week for College attendance, with Year 7 and Year 8 leading the way. Year 11 and Year 12 need to improve at this vital stage in the year.

Attendance between Year 7 and Year 11 last week was 96.0% (up 0.4% on the previous week and 1.9% higher than the same time last year). Since September our overall attendance across Year 7 to Year 11 remains at 95.4%. We aim for 97% attendance.

Last week GIRLS attendance (Years 7-11) was 95.2% (up 0.2%), BOYS attendance (Years 7-11) was 96.7% (up 0.5%). Since the start of September Year 7-11 girls attendance is 95.1% and boys attendance is 95.7%.

The gap between girls and boys is 0.6%.

Please note that from 1 January 2017 the College has a new attendance policy in force. This can be viewed on our website with changes highlighted in yellow.

Changes To Persistent Absence Policy From September 2015 the College changed the definition of “persistent absence” we use to include those students who are under 90% attendance. This is in line with national guidelines and increased the threshold from 85% previously.

Careers Advice For Students

Being Punctual At All Hallows Most students appreciate the importance of being in College on time. Children who are regularly late do miss out on their education and form bad habits that will not be tolerated in the workplace.

We need to inform parents that students must be in the registration form class for the register to be taken at 8.45a.m. This means students should arrive 5-10 minutes earlier in College to be on time.

Any student who arrives after 8.45a.m. will receive an L code. Two L codes within a week will result in a whole college detention to be held each Thursday.

Any student who arrives after 9.05a.m. will receive a U code. This means they will be classed as absent for the whole morning and this may have consequences for overall attendance.

We are aware that College buses are sometimes late and we can confirm these students are not negatively marked in the register when this happens.

Gates are manned by members of staff and names will be taken of those students who are late.

If any parent would like their son or daughter to have a careers interview with Mrs Pilling, our Careers Advisor, this year then please notify the relevant Year Learning Leader who can ensure names are added to the list. Mrs Pilling will prioritise Years 10-13, but students in Years 7-9 are welcome to attend her Thursday lunch time drop in.
