AT the annual Ladies Day at Lendy Cowes Week Tracy Edwards was announced as the winner of the Ladies Day Trophy at an exclusive evening reception held at Northwood House. The trophy was introduced for the first time in 2006 to champion the role of women in sailing and the sheer number of female competitors racing at Lendy Cowes Week. Tracy Edwards is most famously known for entering the first all-female crew in the 1989/90 Whitbread Round the World Race with Maiden. The team went on to win two of the legs and came second in class overall. It was the best result for a British boat since 1977 and the best result for an all-female crew ever. Tracy was awarded the MBE and became
the first woman in its 34 year history to be awarded the Yachtsman of the Year Trophy. In 2016 Tracy worked tirelessly to rescue Maiden and bring her back to the UK; after an extensive refit Maiden will inspire another generation through a huge global campaign to raise awareness and fundraise for access to education for girls denied this basic human right. Following a rigorous crew selection process, four women with many thousands of miles of sailing experience will become the permanent members of the new Maiden crew. They have been preparing the boat for her departure from the Southampton Boat Show for the beginning of her three-year world tour.
Tracy was unable to attend the reception, but the newly announced members of her crew who were attending the reception accepted the trophy on her behalf (see picture on left). Commenting on the win, Amelia Ralphs said, “We are absolutely honoured to be here accepting it on her behalf. It is just a start of our journey with the Maiden Factor, and again it is such an honour to be considered against all the other nominees this year and also to have been awarded the Ladies Day Trophy. It has been a great day for us. We launched Maiden yesterday and the rig is now in, so it is superb.” Kate Johnson, CWL’s Commercial & Marketing Director, said: “Tracy is a shining example of what women can achieve. Tracy has such a supportive and inclusive attitude and is an inspiration to many women here at Lendy Cowes Week. She embodies the spirit that underpins Lendy Ladies Day and is a thoroughly deserving winner. All our congratulations to her. “I am very encouraged by the increasing levels of female participation and enthusiasm for the regatta, in particular women taking the helm during races, with 103 female helms taking part today, an over 50 per cent increase on last year.” On the shore Lendy Ladies Day was

Broadcast on BBC2, the popular documentary series features real rescues carried out by the charity’s lifeboat crews and lifeguards around the UK and Ireland. From the remote and rugged coastline of Anglesey, to the seaside party town of Brighton, the series gives a unique insight into the lives and work of the charity’s volunteer lifeboat crew members and lifeguards, who rescue thousands of people and save hundreds of lives around our coastline and on the River Thames every year. Following the huge success of the two previous series, the most recent of which was broadcast last year, this series features more real-life rescue footage, accompanied by heart-warming and

emotive testimonials from the volunteer crews, lifeguards and the people they rescue and their families. Filming took place over the past year, with lifeboat crews and lifeguards carrying special cameras and welcoming filmmakers into their day-to-day life. Rescues from the RNLI’s archives are also revisited, and we get a glimpse into the everyday lives of the thousands of men and women who give up their time to save lives. Last year alone, RNLI lifeboat crews around the UK and Ireland launched over 8,400 times, assisting more than 8,000 people, while the charity’s lifeguards responded to 17,414 incidents and saved the lives of 127 people on some of the UK’s busiest beaches. Saving Lives at Sea is being shown on BBC Two and will continue throughout September and October.
