NOMINATIONS FOR RYA AWARDS

Radio personality Scott Mills is to headline The Shipyard stage at the Southampton International Boat Show on Saturday 20 September, bringing his signature DJ set to wow the crowds for a spectacular waterside party.

Running from 19 - 28 September, the soundtrack to the UK’s biggest marine festival will be provided by The Shipyard, with 10 days of music and entertainment planned, all included with your show ticket.

Scott, who DJ’ed on Radio 1 for 18 years, is now a firm favourite with Radio 2 audiences, presenting its breakfast show.

Known for his infectious energy and quick wit, he is also a familiar face with fans of Eurovision and Strictly Come Dancing.

Scott said: “I cannot wait to bring the party to the South Coast! Having grown up in Hampshire, I know that the Southampton International Boat Show is iconic, so I am buzzing to be part of it this year. I used to go as a kid, so it is a real honour. I look forward to seeing everybody at The Shipyard where I will play loads of songs you can dance and sing along to.

n For three decades of dedication, Andy Rodgers, coxswain at Bridlington Lifeboat Station, will be made a Member of the British Empire (MBE). n Lymington RNLI volunteer Nick Hayward has been made an MBE for 44 years of unwavering commitment. n For nearly half a century of service to the RNLI, Tony Vlasto has been made an MBE. n Receiving a British Empire Medal (BEM) is David Richmond-Coggan, Water Safety Advisor and Chair of the Bournemouth & Christchurch Fundraising Branch. n John Hill, Volunteer Manager in the Whitstable RNLI shop, has been awarded a BEM, 46 years after he first became involved with the charity. n David Crowden has been recognised for 65 years of service to saving lives at sea with a BEM. n Anjie Rook, Associate Director of Fundraising, Marketing and Media at the RNLI, has also been honoured. Anjie has been an unwavering leader at the charity for 31 years and has been made an MBE for her service.

RNLI lifesavers with a combined 275 years of dedicated service have been recognised in His Majesty The King’s Birthday Honours. Six volunteers and one member of staff have been honoured by The King for their contribution to the charity.

RNLI Chief Executive Peter Sparkes said: “The commitment and dedication of our people never ceases to amaze me, and these individuals are no exception. I am so pleased to see this national recognition right across the RNLI from the frontline delivery of our lifesaving services to our shops and fundraising groups.

“Everyone at the RNLI is a lifesaver and we could not do what we do without the sum of their parts. This includes the families, friends and employers who support them behind the scenes, enabling our people to give their time to support our mission. My congratulations to these seven worthy recipients and my sincere thanks to the thousands of others who continue to volunteer their time to saving lives at sea.”

editor@allatsea.co.uk Isn’t it great to see so many younger sailors on the water and enjoying time around our marinas and sailing clubs this summer. The big questions are, though, how do we keep them participating in our great pastime in the long-term and just how accessible are watersports?

We are looking at these questions, and more, in this issue where – on page 35 – teen sailor Amelie Ballantyne has been considering the challenges often faced by female sailors and how we can encourage them to stay with the sport.

No doubt Amelie, and many young sailors like her, have benefitted from RYA’s OnBoard, the grassroots programme dedicated to getting those aged 8 - 18 out on the water. It is celebrating its 20 birthday, and on page 5 you can find out how OnBoard plans to continue providing opportunities for young people across the UK over the next 10 years.

However, it is not simply about bringing young sailors into the sport; as a hugely successful sailing nation, continuing to develop medal-winning sailors is important for the future too. In the news pages we report on the British Sailing Talent Academies launched by the RYA with the aim “to remove barriers and make world-class training opportunities more accessible and inclusive”. Identifying, supporting and developing youth sailors is vital to our future on-the-water successes as a nation, and hopefully these regional academies will do just that.

We will be kicking off a new Youth Sailing series in the autumn, so be sure to watch out for that!

Perhaps, though, the younger sailors in your family prefer the idea of a holiday on the water. We have lots of holiday news and advice, home and abroad, for you. MDL Marinas has been telling us about its Dock & Discover campaign, which rewards boaters for exploring MDL’s marina network, plus David Henshall

We also have wonderful underwater images for you courtesy of The Wildlife Trusts who, with National Marine Week starting later this month, are encouraging us all to do three things this summer to show our support for our seabeds. One of these is related to bottom trawling, which you can read more about on page 10.

Also working to protect our seas is The Ocean Race Europe; during this summer’s race the boats will be equipped with science instruments to measure key ocean parameters to assist ocean scientists and researchers with their understanding of the changes taking place in European waters.

While The Ocean Race Europe takes in seven European cities starting in August, later this month the focus will be right here – in Portsmouth. If you are going to the Emirates Great Britain SailGP have a fantastic time, and good luck to the British team! Read more about the event on page 15, plus look out for Hollywood’s Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds. No guarantees, but they could be there supporting their new team!

20 YEARS OF ONBOARD

Crucially, the programme plays a powerful role in addressing social inequality. Many participating schools report that their pupils would never have had the opportunity to sail otherwise.

For underfunded schools and youth organisations, OnBoard offers an inclusive and highly effective solution that brings outdoor education directly to local communities.

As it enters its third decade, OnBoard continues to provide opportunities for young people across the UK, allowing children to begin with no prior experience and progress through nationally recognised pathways - gaining confidence, qualifications and life skills.

Looking ahead to the future, the programme shows no signs of slowing with key areas of focus for the next 10 years of OnBoard including: 1. Reaching a further 1 million young people 2. Tackling inequality in access to sport and nature 3. Connecting youth with blue spaces and building water confidence 4. Fostering skills for life

OnBoard, one of the UK’s largest grassroots programmes dedicated to getting children aged 8 - 18 out on the water, is celebrating 20 years of impact having already introduced more than 1.3 million young people to the transformative experience of sailing and windsurfing.

Launched in 2005 by the RYA, the pilot initially began with just two centres - Rockley Watersports in Poole and Hollingworth Lake Water Activity Centre in Rochdale, but has since grown into a national network of more 330 clubs and commercial centres.

From its early days connecting schools with local sailing clubs to get children afloat, OnBoard has evolved into a structured

programme that uses sailing and windsurfing not only to teach water skills, but to build confidence, resilience and essential life skills.

A key transformation came in 2017 when OnBoard was relaunched with a focus on character education, backed by research led by Professor Bill Lucas, Director of the Centre for Real-World Learning at the University of Winchester.

Using sailing as a powerful tool to build character and life skills in young people, this approach introduced six core personal attributes - Confidence, Teamwork, Communication, Determination, Creativity and Independence - which now underpin all OnBoard activities.

DOCK & DISCOVER Boaters cruising the UK this summer can now earn rewards, from marina dining vouchers to a luxury holiday for two, simply by exploring MDL’s marina network as part of its Dock & Discover campaign.

With domestic travel expected to grow throughout 2025, the initiative encourages boaters to make the most of the UK’s waters while enjoying exclusive benefits. The Dock & Discover campaign aims to enhance the cruising experience by turning every overnight

stay into an opportunity for rewards, a chance to discover new destinations and turn summer boating plans into a true adventure.

To take part, boaters simply join MDL’s free Otium loyalty programme, which already offers rewards on berthing and marina services. For this campaign, members will also receive an Explorer’s Card, stamped at each MDL marina they visit. As stamps accumulate, members unlock access to exclusive prizes.

The forecast heading into the race threatened high winds and thunderstorms, though competitors were greeted to calm conditions at the Royal Yacht Squadron start line, with heavy showers arriving later in the afternoon. Over 800 boats competed across various classes, with Jolt 3, skippered

by Matt Adams, first overall in the IRC class to win the Gold Roman Bowl.

This year was Dave Atkinson’s 46th as race director. Dave said: “It was a great day and what makes this race so special is the camaraderie among everyone. The competitors have been telling us how much they enjoyed it and we had very few issues on the water across the day.

There were lots of sub-races happening, with families, schools and groups of friends all trying to beat each other. It is what Round the Island is all about.”

Next year’s race will take place on Saturday 11 July 2026.

Eighty-four-year-old Peter Cunningham took line honours in this year’s Round the Island Race. Completing the course in 3hrs, 26mins and 20secs Peter, who was first to finish the 2021 race with his PowerPlay Racing Team, repeated the feat on the multihull MOD70, now Zoulou.

“It was a really good race,” said Peter.

SKIPPER FINED A 29-year-old skipper has been fined for causing serious damage to a fishing boat when he fell asleep after drinking.

Shaun MacInnes, from Eriskay, was in charge of the FV Annette when it ran aground on the Isle of Rum on 31 March 2022. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency investigated the incident and interviewed MacInnes who denied drinking; he said he had fallen asleep because he was tired due to his personal circumstances.

During the trial, the court heard evidence that MacInnes had been directed by its owner to take the wooden hulled vessel from Eriskay to Mallaig for repairs. While in Mallaig, MacInnes telephoned the owner, stating that he intended to take the deckhand to the Isle of Rum ‘sightseeing’ once repairs were made. The owner agreed on the strict understanding that MacInnes did not consume any alcohol before or during the trip.

During the trial, witnesses gave evidence about the condition MacInnes was in when they encountered him. This included a fisheries officer who spoke with MacInnes just after 4pm. The fisheries officer was so concerned about MacInnes's condition and his stated intention of setting sail for Rum that he called the police.

A police officer arrived and boarded the vessel, finding MacInnes asleep in the wheelhouse. He managed to wake him with the assistance

of the deckhand. Again, MacInnes was unsteady on his feet, slurring his words and was unable to remain focused. The officer established their intention to go to sea and persuaded them to remain in Mallaig and sleep off the effects before they next set sail the following day.

Just after 10pm that evening the Coastguard responded to a Mayday call from the boat after it ran aground on rocks. The boat sustained significant damage and was recovered and escorted back to Mallaig by the Mallaig lifeboat.

MacInnes was fined £2,000 with a £75 victim surcharge and ordered to pay £1,000 in compensation.

Speaking after the sentencing, Debbie Carroll, who leads on health and safety investigations for the COPFS (Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service), said: “It is clear from the evidence led at trial that Shaun MacInnes ignored instructions from the owner of the vessel and the police in taking an unnecessary trip while under the effects of alcohol and fell asleep. As the master of the vessel, he failed to keep a proper lookout and caused it to run aground putting his and his deckhand’s lives at risk, causing serious damage to the boat and the needless deployment of emergency service resources. COPFS will continue to work closely with the MCA to ensure anyone who breaks the law faces prosecutorial action.”

SNAPS CHARITY RACE

Greenwich Yacht Club raised more than £3,000 for the RNLI through its annual Tower Lifeboat Station Yacht Race held on the River Thames. The event saw 15 yachts compete, with the race starting and finishing at Greenwich Yacht Club. Sandhopper, from Thames Estuary Yacht Club, claimed victory with a near-perfect performance, starting second-tolast and finishing second, securing the fastest corrected time under the Byron handicap system.

LOOE LUGGER CLASSICS

Looe’s Lugger Regatta returns this July – and it promises to be bigger and better than ever before. After the Covid-enforced hiatus, the 2023 reunion of famous old fishing boats attracted a slightly disappointing entry, partly because the most suitable tides were in May which proved too early in the season for many.

The future of the regatta was in doubt since many of the remaining boats, several of them built in Looe, are now more than 100 years ago and the cost of their upkeep continues to rise year-on-year.

New lugger chairman David Darlington and vice-chairman Jonathan Brice knew something had to change, especially since at least eight of the traditional lug-rigged fishing boats have been ‘lost’ (either retired or scraped) in the past decade.

So, this year’s event, 25 – 27 July, has been re-titled the Looe Lugger Classics with entry no longer restricted to Cornish luggers. This year the lugger numbers will be buoyed by a varied fleet of other sailing boats, all of which also embrace the spirit of tradition.

fondly remember the days when huge fleets of sailing luggers – the woodenbuilt fishing boats take their name from their distinctive rig of lug sails which are peculiar to Cornish, Brittany, Isle of Man and Scottish fishing fleets – fished off the Cornish coast, working long lines, deep out in the English Channel, for conger, ray, turbot and the like, or shooting miles of drift nets to catch pilchards, once the mainstay of the country’s fishing industry.

Looe’s re-invigorated heritage reunion – which will also include the Made-inLooe Regatta, championing the port’s rich boatbuilding history – will feature a series of events in the bay and on the river and will welcome modern replicas and old gaffers as well as the luggers. The weekend will be followed by a ‘Rest Day’ in harbour on 28 July after which the fleet will have an opportunity to feed into the Fowey Classics rally.

For the first time, the regatta will also be part of the West Country Classics Series, incorporating similar summer events in Dartmouth, Falmouth and Fowey.

Plans for this year’s Lugger Classics include an event village with live music.

A licensed bar, barbecue and other food outlets will be available and quayside attractions include talks, an artist in residence, crab-pot and oar making demonstrations and a model boat display.

SECRETS OF OUR SEABEDS swimming in large shoals close to the seabed. To swim with sand eels, take a dip at Looe or snorkel off any of the Falmouth beaches, where Cornwall Wildlife Trust runs snorkel safari events.

3. How seagrasses pollinate underwater - Seagrasses are the only flowering plants able to live and pollinate under seawater. Male seagrass flowers produce the longest pollen grains on the planet. These float onto the pistils of female flowers. Cumbria, Yorkshire and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust are restoring these meadows, which are also carbon sinks.

4. The seaweed which protects us from storm surges - Underwater forests of brown seaweed, or kelp, have a superpower – as climate change creates more severe weather, they provide a buffer against storm surges, helping to reduce coastal erosion.

You will find these special plants in

Sussex, where Sussex Wildlife Trust is running a nationally recognised Kelp Recovery Project.

5. Where to find beautiful coral-like seabeds around our coasts - Off the coasts of Scotland and Cornwall are seabeds as beautiful as any you will find in tropical waters. Maerl beds are formed of intricate branches of pink and red nodules. They are irreplaceable, but despite their importance for both biodiversity and carbon storage, they are still at risk from bottom-towed gears.

6. The best locations to rock pool amongst rocky reefs - Rocky reefs can be alongside the seashore or submerged beneath the waves at up to 2000m. Rock pooling by the seashore is a great way to meet solar powered sea slugs, crabs, star ascidian and strawberry anemones and some of the top spots are Wembury Beach, Devon, Killiedraught Bay, Scotland, and Flamborough Head in Yorkshire.

1. The name of the oldest animals on Earth - Hidden amongst our muddy seabed sediments are the longest-lived animals known to man. They are so old that some shared our planet with King Henry VIII. Ocean quahogs are round aquatic molluscs with growth lines across the shell. You can age them by counting the lines. Plus, scientists use them to discover how warm or salty the sea was up to 500 years ago.

2. Where to swim with shoals of tiny sand eels - Sand eels are tiny, silvery fish which are not really eels at all. The favoured fish of puffins, they thrive in sandy and gravel-rich areas and from April to September can be seen

CALL FOR BAN ON BOTTOM TRAWLING Bottom trawling – a fishing method that involves dragging large nets along the sea floor – could be banned across more vulnerable areas of English seas.

The government has outlined plans to ban the destructive practice in more Marine Protected Areas.

The measures would help protect rare marine animals, as well as the delicate seabeds on which they rely, from indiscriminate and potentially irreversible damage.

A consultation, running until 1 September, invites marine and fisheries stakeholders to share their views and evidence on the prohibition of destructive bottom-towed fishing gear that could affect approximately 30,000km² spanning 41 MPAs. The measures would protect marine habitats ranging from subtidal sandbanks to gravels to muds, and support important marine species such as lobster, clams, soft corals and langoustines. A ban on bottom trawling in these areas would help

conserve valuable and rare marine life, and allow seabeds to recover from damage caused by destructive fishing practices.

Director of Policy and Public Affairs at The Wildlife Trusts Joan Edwards said: “For too long damaging activities have been allowed to continue within many of our Marine Protected Areas which are supposed to protect the seabed. The Wildlife Trusts have been campaigning for a long time for better management of our MPAs and therefore welcome the news of a consultation to ban bottom-towed trawling in over 40 offshore sites.

“Removing this pressure is a great step forward towards protecting not only the wildlife and fish stocks within those sites, but also the carbon stored in the seabed muds beneath.

Following this consultation, we hope that these measures will be put in place rapidly to enable recovery of these sites, a win-win for both nature and the climate.”

The Wildlife Trusts’ National Marine Week (26 July – 10 August) is uncovering the mysterious world of our seabeds: the rich habitats which surround our islands and store vast amounts of carbon but are often seen as brown, boring and lifeless.

These vital habitats are full of incredible wildlife and yet they are threatened with destruction by industrial scale fishing in many areas. In the UK over half of marine habitats are deteriorating and only 29 per cent of estuaries and coastal bodies are in good ecological condition.

Even Marine Protected Areas – nature reserves at sea – are not yet fully protected from destructive fishing activities such as bottom trawling, where huge nets and chains are dragged along the ocean floor, bulldozing anything in their way.

Daniele Clifford, marine conservation officer at The Wildlife Trusts, said: “Many people do not realise we have amazing cold-water corals, chalk reeds, muds and

VITAL OCEAN DATA The Ocean Race Europe, an offshore sailing race that connects seven European cities from the Baltic to the Adriatic Seas, will see all of the competing IMOCA race boats carrying specialised science equipment.

During the race this summer, boats will be equipped with different science instruments to measure key ocean parameters such as water temperature and salinity, oxygen and CO2 levels, microplastic concentrations and eDNA. Additionally, some teams will be tasked to deploy drifter buoys that will transmit real time meteorological information to shore stations over a period of years.

The goal is to provide ocean scientists and researchers with more data points to better understand the changes taking place in European waters.

“We know conditions in our ocean are changing rapidly but scientists need

more data to better understand what is happening, the pace of change and how this impacts ocean health,” said Lucy Hunt, the Ocean Impact Director of The Ocean Race and a marine biologist.

The Ocean Race will also convene science communication workshops throughout the year to develop strategies to better engage the public on the link between ocean science and how this information can inform public policy that reflects the critical role the ocean plays in the health of the planet.

The Ocean Race Europe is an offshore yacht race with sailors competing under the banner of Connecting Europe. The race starts in Kiel on 10 August and takes in six additional European cities: Portsmouth, Matosinhos-Porto, Cartagena, Nice and Genova before the Finale to Boka Bay in Montenegro where the event concludes on 20 September.

CELEBRATING OUR UNDERWATER WORLD

Bringing together award-winning underwater photography, exquisite marine sketches and rare Glasgow Pottery recovered from a shipwreck, the Scottish Maritime Museum celebrates the extraordinary world beneath the ocean’s surface in a new summer exhibition.

‘Beneath the Waves’ has been curated in collaboration with renowned underwater Anemone by Christina Riley

photographer, marine conservationist and writer Lawson Wood, diver and maritime explorer Graeme Bruce and Ayrshire underwater artist and writer Christina Riley.

In the exhibition, Lawson Wood draws on 60 years of underwater photography.

His images reveal the captivating world of marine life and range from colourful tropical fish and seals to corals and anemone.

Beneath the Waves also features two rare ceramic bowls recovered from the wreck of the 1857 iron steamship SS Eagle off Whiting Bay, Arran by Oban-based Graeme Bruce and team last July. The bowls were made by Glasgow-based Bell’s Pottery, which is recognised as arguably the most internationally significant producer of ceramic wares in Scotland during the nineteenth century.

Christina Riley’s work, meanwhile, focuses on the small details of complex and beautiful marine ecosystems, often highlighting one individual species at a time, such as seagrass or the elegant eggs of a nudibranch (sea slug). The exhibition features a selection of photographs and pencil drawings created during her time as a snorkelling-artist-in-residence at the Argyll Hope Spot, which highlights areas critical to the health of the ocean.

Beneath the Waves also features artefacts from the museum’s national maritime heritage collection and exhibits on loan from North Ayrshire Heritage Trust.

In addition, visitors can learn more about free diving and how this ancient practice has advanced our understanding of marine archaeology and conservation.

This project has been made possible with the support from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and will see laundry microfibres, captured in Cleaner Seas Group’s filters, converted into recycled materials for use in a range of industries. The recycling centre will tackle circularity in microfibre recycling globally and enhance Cleaner Seas Group’s mission to transform microplastic waste into new materials for multiple industries.

After a two-decade absence, what used to be described as the ‘unofficial world championships of offshore racing’ is back.

In 2025 the Royal Ocean Racing Club aims to re-establish the Admiral’s Cup as one of the sport’s most prestigious and competitive competitions, with the event starting on 17 July.

From 1957 teams of three yachts represented different countries and took part in a series of inshore and offshore races, culminating in the iconic Fastnet Race. This was the golden age of offshore racing and to celebrate the return of the event, two protagonists are now sharing their stories of these times in two new

eBooks: Dick Carter: Yacht Designer and The Leading Edge.

In 1965, American Dick Carter entered the first boat he had ever designed into the Fastnet Race. The fact that he won the race gave an indication of what was to come. Four years later he entered both the Fastnet and the Admiral’s Cup in a new design and he triumphed in both. Aboard with him on both these occasions was a young American crewman called Sandy Weld. They sailed together throughout this period, winning many prestigious trophies.

HOLLYWOOD AT THE HELM

After a 10th place finish in Race 4, the Brits managed to secure two third place finishes in Races 5 and 6.

Emirates GBR Driver Dylan Fletcher said: “We are obviously disappointed with the weekend overall, it is not good enough, but it was nice to get those last two races. Given yesterday’s results, we are proud of how we came out today. It was a disappointing first race but we took it on the chin and kept fighting to get two solid races in.”

Dylan said the team was “frustrated” by an umpire call which handed them a penalty for not giving room when altering course in relation to Canada.

“We clearly have a different view to the umpires,” Dylan said. “We thought the Canadians were in the wrong and that is frustrating as it cost us a point to

them and points on the overall season leaderboard. We have had a review and we still do not understand how we got a penalty – but ultimately, that is racing.”

The result sees Spain overtake Tom Slingsby’s BONDS Flying Roos (Australia) in the overall standings, while Peter Burling’s Black Foils (New Zealand) move into the top three – bumping Emirates GBR from third to fourth.

The next event on the Rolex SailGP Championship 2025 Season calendar is this month’s Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix in Portsmouth.

Fletcher said the team was hoping to carry the momentum of their better results in the last two races into Portsmouth and “get back on to that top step of the podium” in front of a home crowd.

Emirates GBR Driver Dylan Fletcher said the team was “disappointed” with their result at June’s Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix, but was hoping to “get back on the podium” at their home event, the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix in Portsmouth on 19 - 20 July.

Spain came out victorious in New York, beating New Zealand and France in the three-boat final to secure their second win of the 2025 Season. The Emirates Great Britain SailGP Team finished the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix in 8th place after a tricky two days on the Hudson River.

On Race Day One, in heavy rain and light wind, Emirates GBR finished the three fleet races with a result of 11-6-9.

The weather improved on Race Day 2, as did the British team’s performance.

Ahead of the New York SailGP, Australia’s three-time SailGP champions unveiled a new identity along with two new coowners – actors Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds – who join Driver and CEO Tom Slingsby in leading the freshly rebranded BONDS Flying Roos SailGP Team.

New co-owners Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds said: “We are incredibly excited to set sail together in this new adventure.

Hugh brings a deep love for and pride in his home country as well as being an avid fan of sailing. He will also be bringing his overly clingy emotional support human along for the ride. Apologies in advance to Australia.

CONNECTED BY WATER The RYA has been named the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix’s Official Community Impact Partner.

A major partnership with SailGP to connect people with their local waters, the RYA’s action-packed programme is a celebration of community, inclusion and the belief that every young person – regardless of background – should have the chance to be inspired by the sea and experience the opportunities that being on the water brings.

In the build-up to the Rolex SailGP weekend, the RYA is leading a major programme of outreach and activity to bring sailing and watersports to the heart of Portsmouth’s communities. Delivered in partnership with the Andrew Simpson Foundation, Energise Me, 1851 Trust, local schools and community groups, the initiative aims to inspire the next generation

through a unique introduction to sailing, the technology in the sport and the importance of ocean health.

Susie Moore, RYA South Regional Manager, said: “It is fantastic to be working with SailGP to help connect the community to the water. So many local children live right by the sea yet have never had the chance to experience sailing.

“Through our work with the 2023 Formula Kites, we have already seen the incredible impact this can have - over 339 children took part in our previous Beach Club sessions, leading to 240 follow-on opportunities. By running a similar experience at this event, we hope to inspire even more young people to discover the amazing opportunities the water has to offer.”

The programme complements various opportunities provided

by SailGP around the Portsmouth event for local youth, as part of their SailGP Better Sport ambition.

Local young wing foilers will showcase their skills on the water, and the SailGP Next Gen Challenge is running in the lead up to the event – a STEM-based challenge designed to engage local young people through the power of sport in collaboration with the 1851 Trust.

Rob Clark, RYA Director of Sport Development, said: “This partnership goes beyond sport.

It is about giving young people confidence, skills and a sense of connection to the water that can shape their future. SailGP is the spark, but it is the legacy we build together that matters most.

The Rolex SailGP Championship returns to UK shores for the first time in three years for the Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix | Portsmouth from 19 – 20 July; marking the seventh event of the 2025 Season.

SailGP last came to the UK in July 2022, with an event in Plymouth which was attended by more than 31,000 people, including HRH Princess of Wales. This time around, however, thousands of fans will line the Southsea seafront to watch the 12 national teams race F50 foiling catamarans at speeds of up to 60mph on the Solent, against the backdrop of Spinnaker Tower and Southsea Castle.

TWO DAYS OF RACING

Two days of fast and furious racing are planned, with seven qualifying races and the winner-takes-all Final scheduled across the weekend. Portsmouth’s official Race Stadium will open from 2pm, with racing scheduled between 4-5.30pm. Any updates or changes to the schedule due to inclement weather will be communicated via the SailGP website.

The Race Stadium on Southsea Common will bring fans closer to the action in front of the iconic Solent, with grandstand viewing offering elevated views of the racecourse just meters from the shore.

Emirates GBR will have the advantage of local knowledge over the 11 other national teams – hoping this holds the key to success when racing gets underway. The team is led by the most successful Olympic sailor of all-time, Sir Ben Ainslie, as CEO. Driven by Olympic gold medallist, Moth World Champion and America’s Cup Helm Dylan Fletcher, with double Olympic champion Hannah Mills in the strategist seat, the crew also features Olympic gold medallist Iain Jensen and three-time America’s Cup athletes Neil Hunter, Nick Hutton and Luke Parkinson.

Ellie Aldridge and Ben Cornish are the team’s reserve sailors, while Kai Hockley completes the squad as a development sailor, who is on the team’s Athena Pathway programme.

but in 1987 moved to larger premises further up the River Ouse. In 1990 Peter bought out a local engineering company, Irving Engineering, to expand his business, and in the same year his son Peter (Jnr) started work with the company, supporting the experienced service team.

Then, in 1992, Peter Leonard negotiated the acquisition of some river frontage to develop his own marina, and the company moved to its present location on Denton Island, Newhaven.

Peter and his family have worked hard to develop a pleasant, picturesque boatyard, which is now capable of accommodating 250 boats on land and water.

At the end of 2002, Peter Leonard acquired ‘the old dairy’ situated behind the existing boatyard. This has allowed a large expansion in both the workshop facilities and the chandlery side of the business and also a larger office, which was extended in 2012 to accommodate the ever-growing stock of engine spares and chandlery.

Whether your summer plans consist of leisurely cruises or exhilarating races, looking after your boat and staying on-top of maintenance is essential to ensure you have a great season. After all, nothing ruins your summer plans like something going wrong with your boat!

To make things even easier, here’s our helpful tick list of the areas you need to be looking at when it comes to routine maintenance and checking your boat:

1. Pre-season prep If you haven’t already done so, ensure crucial pre-season tasks are completed. This often includes applying antifouling paint, carrying out an engine service and renewing anodes.

2. Little and often Throughout the summer get into the habit of conducting regular inspections. These don’t have to be time consuming, but things like quick oil level checks, visual scans of the hull to check for any damages and ensuring deck fittings are secure are all important. Catching small issues early can prevent them from escalating into significant problems that could interrupt your summer fun. Think of it as a routine health check for your boat.

3. Keep a detailed maintenance log Maintaining a record of any maintenance performed, repairs undertaken, and even routine checks

Engines and Propulsion

n Fluid Levels: regularly check and top up oil and coolant levels as needed. Low fluid levels can lead to overheating and engine damage. n Drive Belts and Hoses: inspect drive belts for any signs of cracking, fraying, or excessive wear. Similarly, check hoses for leaks, swelling, or stiffness. Replace any compromised components promptly. n Sacrificial Anodes: summer often means your boat spends more time immersed, increasing the risk of galvanic corrosion. Regularly inspect your sacrificial anodes (zinc, aluminium, or magnesium) and replace them if they are significantly eroded. These small components play a crucial role in protecting more valuable metal parts of your boat. n Propellers: whether your boat is being lifted for its seasonal antifouling or before it’s launched, take the opportunity to thoroughly inspect your propellers. Look for any signs of damage such as dents, bends, or chips, which can impact performance and fuel efficiency.

Safety First Keeping yourself, your family and friends safe aboard is of utmost importance. Before your first trip of the summer make a thorough safety check a non-negotiable. n Lifejackets and Life Rafts: meticulously inspect all lifejackets for wear and tear, ensuring they are the correct size and readily accessible. If you have a life raft, confirm its service date is current. n Fire Extinguishers: verify that all fire extinguishers are in good working order and that their service dates are valid. Ensure everyone on board knows their location and how to use them. n Flares: check the expiration dates of all flares and ensure they are stored in an easily accessible, dry location. Familiarise yourself with the different types of flares and their appropriate use. n First Aid Kit: ensure your first aid kit is well-stocked.

Electrical Systems and Batteries Modern boats rely heavily on their electrical systems for everything from navigation to entertainment. Summer often brings increased usage of onboard systems, making a healthy electrical system essential. n Battery Connections: ensure all battery connections are clean, tight, and free from corrosion. Clean any build-up with a wire brush and apply a corrosion protectant. n Voltage Testing: regularly test the voltage of your batteries to ensure they are holding a proper charge. A multimeter is an invaluable tool for this.

Address any batteries that consistently show low voltage. n Wiring Inspection: visually inspect accessible wiring for any signs of damage, such as chafing or cracking.

The Foundation of Your Boating Experience. The summer sun and constant exposure to water can take a toll on your boat’s hull. Regular attention will help maintain its integrity and appearance. n Hull Cleaning: if your boat stays in the water, regular cleaning of the hull is essential to prevent the buildup of algae and barnacles, which can reduce performance and fuel efficiency. Consider regular scrubbing or employing the services of a diver.

n Navigation and Communication Systems: With the potential for longer voyages and exploration of new cruising grounds during the summer, the reliability of your navigation and communication systems is essential for safety and peace of mind. n GPS, Radar, and Radios: regularly power on and test your GPS, radar, and VHF radio to ensure they are functioning correctly. n Charts and Software: ensure any paper charts are up-to-date and that any electronic charting software is updated with the latest versions. n Communication Checks: conduct radio checks with other vessels or shore stations to confirm your VHF radio is transmitting and receiving effectively. n Inspection for Damage: routinely inspect the hull for any new cracks, chips, blisters, or other signs of damage. Address any issues promptly to prevent them from worsening. Pay particular attention to areas around fittings and through-hulls.

Sails and Rigging

For those whose summer adventures involve the joy of sailing, maintaining your sails and rigging is crucial for performance and safety. n Sail Inspection: before heading out, carefully inspect your sails for any signs of chafing, tears, or damage to seams. Address any necessary repairs. n Rigging Check: examine your standing and running rigging for any signs of wear, corrosion, or damage.

Pay close attention to shackles, swivels, and turnbuckles.

AAS: Tell us why Nazca’s Fastnet race is going to be a first.

WP: As far as we know we are the first and only pure electric yacht to enter the race. We are powered only by solar and wind, with no backup generator onboard.

AAS: Nazca is a 40-year-old yacht; what are her green credentials?

WP: Five years ago she was the same as any yacht in the legacy fleet with a diesel engine and anti-foul paint on her hull. Following her transformation, she is now powered entirely by nature, using 400w of solar and hydro generation through her Oceanvolt Servo Prop to recharge her 20kWh battery bank. Her bottom coating is biocide-free (Hempel Silic One) and anything pumped out from her bilges is filtered through Wave International’s Wavestream system, removing any errant paint flakes, microplastics and other particles before they are released into the sea.

AAS: Not just a racer, can you tell us more about the marine science research aspect of Nazca?

WP: Nazca’s electric propulsion refit was originally intended to test the technology and prove it can be used safely and effectively in waters such as the Bristol Channel and Celtic Sea. With no emissions and noise pollution, she can enter sensitive environmental areas such as Marine Protected Zones without fear of harm to the endangered species sheltering there. This enables her to monitor and survey these areas using our ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle), a Manta Trawl to test for microplastics and taking sediment samples. In this way, we have been supporting the Ocean Conservation Trust with their EULife REmedies seagrass project, amongst others.

Nazca is also a research and development platform, trialling different technologies and critically new methods and strategies.

AAS: Who are the crew onboard Nazca?

WP: We have a core crew onboard for racing, mostly two-handed with myself as Skipper and First Mate Bee Woodland, an experienced sailor with thousands of miles under her belt and a dedicated Ocean Advocate. Joining us for the Fastnet is Oskari Alho from Oceanvolt, also an extremely experienced sailor and professional race crew. Various scientists, researchers and partners come aboard during expeditions, though, to assist with the scientific research. We would not be able to do any of this without support from our shore crew, our unsung heroes! From the team at Padstow Boatyard, Alan at Sail Shape Ltd to friends George and Sinead who have been with me on this journey from the start in 2020.

AAS: Tell us about your charity partners.

WP: I have been an ambassador for the Ocean Conservation Trust for several years now; they are great to work with and really supportive of everything we do on Nazca. Their #ThinkOcean campaign encourages people to stop and consider their actions in all areas of life and how it might impact on the ocean. From choosing plastic free alternatives when they go shopping to how they dispose of their waste, it is all a part of the story. We are working with them to raise awareness and give the ocean a voice.

Our other charity partner is Seaful. Their focus is ocean conservation, but also the impact the ocean has on us and our mental health. It was founded by a good friend of mine, Cal, who is also from North Devon.

We see Nazca as the conduit between the ocean and humanity. She sits in the middle, monitoring the impact we as humans have on the ocean and raising awareness of the damage we are doing, but she also shows the impact the ocean has on us. When we are at sea, we are calmer, happier and more able to focus.

We often come into port at the end of a trip and wish we were back out on the waves!

AAS: If you had a time machine, would you choose to go to the future or the past?

WP: You cannot change the past, it has already happened, so I think I would go to the future.

Times are changing rapidly, and what is by far the most inspiring insight during these leaveno-trace projects is the change in mindset, from both an industry perspective and also a public one. As the collective ambition for positive change grows, and I do not think I am alone, we think of the effort made and whether it has been enough. The world is changing, and the more people we can inspire, the better the future will look.

AAS: What are the plans for the rest of 2025?

WP: By the time this is published, we should have completed our qualifying mileage for the Fastnet and will be all set for the start on 26 July. The Fastnet has been the all-encompassing focus for the last eight months, completing the refit to comply with the regulations to allow us to race. So once we are across the finish line in Cherbourg, it will be a relief to come out of race mode and back into a cruising mindset.

And a well-earned rum first and foremost, I think!

After that, we have got a bit of a powered-bynature Three Peaks Challenge planned. Bee is an ultra-runner taking on Rat Race’s Sea to Summit trilogy this autumn in memory of her cousin. She will be running up Scafell Pike, Snowden and Ben Nevis in three separate events and the plan is to sail her between races on Nazca. Once we are up in Scotland, we hope to team up with Cal Major from the charity Seaful to conduct a scientific research expedition and film a documentary.

COWES WEEK

Next month Cowes Week, one of the oldest regattas in the world and one of the best-known events in the global sailing calendar, returns ahead its bicentenary in 2026. and course setters, enabling them to optimise race planning for the varying conditions across the Solent. Summary and detailed forecasts, together with live wind data, will be available through the official Cowes Week App and on the event website.

SPECIAL DAYS

With women accounting for around 30 per cent of competitors, and celebrating the contribution and achievement of women in sailing, the Tuesday of race week is Women’s Day. The Women’s Day Trophy was introduced in 2006 to champion the role of women in sailing and the number of female competitors at Cowes Week. Trophies for the leading female helm and also the leading all-female crew are presented at the Women’s Day reception.

Previous winners have included big names from the world of sailing such as Pip Hare, Dee Caffari MBE and Tracy Edwards MBE. In 2024, the Women’s Day Trophy was awarded to Libby Finch and the female crew of Nightjar, a J/92 racing in Class 4 and owned by Penny Jeffcoate. Many of the crew are also members of the Cowes RNLI crew and Libby was the first female helm at the Cowes RNLI Lifeboat station.

Wednesday, meanwhile, is Youth Day with a Youth Trophy introduced a couple of years ago in recognition of the outstanding commitment and achievement in a more general sailing sense for Image: Paul Wyeth

T

his iconic British sporting event takes place each August in the Solent waters off Cowes and welcomes around 500 boats racing in up to 30 classes which race on each of the seven days.

Up to 5,000 sailors race every day ranging from weekend sailors to World Champions and Olympic medallists, plus more than 60,000 visitors head to Cowes to watch the sailing, enjoy the parties and live entertainment, and experience the unique Cowes Week atmosphere.

Over the years the regatta has been visited by royalty and other world-famous personalities as well as, on the water, naval warships, superyachts and more. One of the great attractions of Cowes Week is that the seven-day racing programme encompasses people from all walks of life, of all ages and abilities and with a range of boats as diverse as the crews participating.

However, you do not need to own a boat or know someone who does to take part. The Crew Forum, on the event website, is a great resource for sailors to make themselves known as available crew to the competing boats. There are opportunities to charter a boat too.

The boats themselves, which range from hightech racing machines to classic day boats, and family owned to professionally crewed, are split into classes which race on each of the seven days with most starts from the famous Royal Yacht Squadron start line. Some classes also sail courses from a committee boat start on certain days. All, though, will be competing for some of the world’s most prestigious sailing silverware.

Boats will sail varied ‘round-the-cans’ courses designed to suit the style of boat and prevailing wind and tide conditions on each day. The sheltered waters and unusual tidal conditions of the Solent make for some interesting and challenging sailing for all.

Talking of conditions, Garmin is again the Official Weather Forecast Sponsor supporting the event’s official meteorology service, providing competitors and visitors with regular updates on the current and expected conditions.

Jon Oliver, Managing Director of Garmin UK and Ireland, said: “Sailing is in our blood and Garmin marine electronics are built with sailing-specific features to help boat performance. We are proud to play our part in this vibrant and esteemed regatta.”

young sailors. Tottenham teenagers Kai Hockley and Jessye Opoku-Ware, who were racing Flip Flop, a borrowed Flying 15, were last year’s joint winners of the Cowes Week Youth Trophy.

There are numerous additional trophies awarded at the end of the week including the Under 25 Trophy and Young Skipper’s Trophy. The Overall Winner Trophy, though, is awarded to the winner of either Black Group or White Group, determined by the overall winner on points.

In 2024 Rupert Mander and Gareth Edwards’ Flying 15 Men Behaving Badly won her class with a day to spare, along with the White Group. Rupert Mander and Gareth Edwards were also crowned overall Cowes Week winners for the second time in three years and the fourth time in total.

SHORESIDE

One of the great things about Cowes Week is watching the racing from the shore; racing is scheduled to start at approximately 10am every day.

The Green and The Parade are great places to view the action, and spectators also have opportunities to go afloat on official event spectator boats. Tickets can be bought in advance online and bookings can be made at the Regatta Centre during the event or on the day from Blue Funnel on Trinity Landing, where the boats depart.

One of the best locations to watch the starts each morning is the area between the Castle of the Royal Yacht Squadron and the cannons. In the afternoon, head along the Green towards Egypt Point to watch the fleet as they finish. The Cowes Week App also provides you with everything you need for the regatta, whether you are taking part, spectating or following the event from home.

Spectating or competing, the lively après-sail atmosphere at Cowes Week means there are plenty of onshore activities to enjoy too. Check out the entertainment schedule on the app or at the event website for a day-by-day guide of things to do.

The event has been awarded Silver Level Clean Regatta Certification by Sailors for the Sea. They work with The Green Blue too, and have signed up with the Clean Seas campaign - Turn the Tide on Plastic.

CHARITY SUPPORT

Autism on the Water has joined as one of the Official Charities for the 2025 edition, and they will be joining the RNLI who became an official charity partner in 2024. AOTW have been regular competitors at the regatta in recent years and will be racing their Impala 28 with guests and crew throughout the week with shoreside activities also planned.

Murray MacDonald, Founder and Director of Autism on the Water, said: “It is a privilege to be supported by such an iconic British sailing event as Cowes Week. This is a great opportunity for the sailing community and wider public to see and learn about what we do whilst being part of the biggest town regatta in the world.

PREPARING FOR THE SUMMER CRUISE

With summer adventures upon us, Ocean Safety shares this handy planning and safety advice.

J

uly and August are the time that many boat owners, with their families and friends, head off for a bit of a cruise.

The traditional summer cruise is longer than the average weekend or overnight outing that most sailors undertake and needs quite a bit more planning.

Start with the route and destination and - in as much as weather and sea conditions allow - an outline timetable.

Next, the catering, packing and all manner of creature comforts. Finally it is time to check that everything works, get any last minute servicing done and have spares and tools for all major eventualities.

Within this category should be the most important bit of preparation of all safety planning and safety equipment.

Equipment

Your vessel will most likely be equipped with all the basics already, such as lifejackets, VHF radio, flares, first aid kit and MOB equipment. Bigger boats and those doing regular long voyages may well carry liferafts, EPIRBs and personal man overboard location and recovery devices.

If you do not own a liferaft because you do not often leave coastal waters, but your voyage involves some longer offshore sailing, then you could consider hiring one, a service that Ocean Safety provides. If that is the only time you need it, it makes complete sense to go down the hire route. Plus you do not need to worry about servicing.

Checking all the rest of the equipment is important too. Flares go out-of-date, as do the canisters that automatically

inflate lifejackets. Check them all and get in touch with Ocean Safety if they need servicing.

Planning

It is all very well having an extensive inventory of operational safety equipment, but using it in an emergency is another matter altogether. Start your planning by considering who is going to be on the boat with you.

Are you the most experienced person on board? If so and you were to fall overboard, the remaining crew need to have a drill ready to recover you, that they will be able to execute and also have the physical strength for - some of your crew might be youngsters or more elderly.

Before you head off, ensure you show your crew where everything is stowed and make sure they can access things.

Run through how everything works and get them to give you a demo once you have explained it. Get everyone fitted for a lifejacket and put their names on a bit of sail tape and attach to each. Carry out an all-important man overboard drill so that everyone is aware of your plan in the event of a man overboard situation.

GO THE EXTRA MILE

that the track would have taken, which has been cleared, tarmacked and is now a delightful route to walk or cycle that takes the visitor all the way from the harbour in Weymouth to the causeway that links Portland to the mainland and is the start of the iconic Chesil Beach.

The route is well served by interesting information boards and though it is a tidy stretch to go all the way to Portland (although there is an ‘every 15 minutes or so’ bus back to Weymouth Town Centre) the walk is mainly sheltered, a boon if it is too sunny or breezy for other activities.

THE BEACH Radipole Lake is a mere five minute walk from the Marina Office and is a delight for all ages. Most boats carry binoculars, so make sure that you take them with you when you visit the Radipole!

the large car park and into the reserve itself, where not only are there some wonderful walks to explore with wildlife of all sorts readily seen, but for those younger explorers the RSPB centre (known for the quality of the cakes) can supply a ‘dipping kit’ that will enable those inquisitive minds the chance to see some of Radipole Lake’s smaller inhabitants, those that would not be welcome back onboard!

RODWELL TRAIL

After being onboard, the Rodwell Trail is a wonderful way to stretch out the legs and on a day that can be hot, breezy or inclement, the path is sheltered and well maintained

Another 100m and you are in the lee of the Nothe Fort, with its steep, wooden banks, pathways and cafes offering a wonderful invitation for a leg stretching walk once ashore, before the channel swings past the moored up fishing boats that line the harbour wall and the rows of gaily painted houses.

WATCH YOUR HEIGHT

For yachts wanting to gain access to the main marina, there is one more hurdle to pass with the route barred by the main Town Bridge. Smaller boats can easily get through after checking against the air height gauges that are either side of the bridge, then every two hours cars and pedestrian traffic are held whilst the bridge opens.

he Diary page last month looked at one of the most amazing legacies of that super summer of golden sport as the UK hosted the Olympics back in 2012. The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy is now a jewel in the UK’s sailing crown, but there is so much more to the area at the base of the Isle of Portland than just the premier location for running sailing races.

Almost next door to the Academy is the very smart Portland Marina, a wonderful base not only for yachts heading up and down the channel, but as a base to explore the delights of the Jurassic Coast. Portland Marina was yet another of the prime location marinas brought into service by the Dean & Reddyhoff team before they went on to become boatfolk.

Just as with the Academy, boatfolk have been busy upping the quality of the experience for visitors, with one notable change being in how the rather uninspiring pub has been upgraded to a smart and inviting eatery. Dean & Reddyhoff already had a strong presence in the area courtesy of their development of a site that has to be one of the best ‘hidden gems’ of our South Coast.

Instead of shaping a course in to enter Portland Harbour through the preferred North Entrance, by standing on towards the town of Weymouth for an extra mile you will arrive at the well marked entrance to Weymouth Harbour and an immediate change of scene.

 After motoring up the picturesque channel between coloured houses and fishing boats, there is the ritual of the bridge opening. For younger crew members, this is a delightful bonus as everything has to stop as the boats pass through!

Mention was made of the cycle way, which leads back into the area near the bridge where there are shops offering cycles for hire. The main area around Weymouth is reasonably flat and well served by cycle ways, offering a twowheeled chance to widen the horizons after being on the boat.

For the fitter and really adventurous there is a cycle way that extends the eight miles inland to the delightful county town of Dorchester, which can also be reached by both bus and train - again, both train and bus stations are little more than a five minute walk from the marina.

However, if there is one shore based (with the emphasis on shore) activity that sets Weymouth apart from most other sailing destinations then it has to be in the easy access from the marina to the Town Beach. The wide sweep of the beach with its soft golden sands is safe for families courtesy of the fact that the beach gently shelves, with deeper water much further out.

It enjoys Blue Flag status and in the all-important summer months is home to a wide range of beachside entertainments, with fireworks and live music in the evening.

It is not always easy to drag the younger crew members away on a voyage (“do we HAVE to??”) but if the destination is Weymouth, then there is more than enough going on there to cause even a temporary suspension of online time: all the skipper has to do is ‘go that extra mile’...

rigging lines and fenders) and the first half of the marina which is operated by Weymouth itself. Stand on just a little further and the boatfolk pontoons start, with these being clearly signposted.

It is only then that it becomes clearly apparent that the main marina is actually located right up into the town itself, a sub-five minute walk past the wellinformed Marina Office. Having close-by access to the main shopping area is in itself a major draw, but again, for those boats with a younger crew (and even for the older ones) the delights are only just starting.

NATURE RESERVE

The inland end of the marina is marked by a bridge atop a sluice which marks the start of Radipole Lake, an RSPB Nature Reserve that was given a certain prominence during recent episodes of the BBC Spring and Summer Watch programmes. There is a well set out walk and cycleway from the marina past

In most destinations, in order to skipper a yacht either bareboat or flotilla you require an RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or an International Certificate of Competence (ICC). These qualifications can be gained at RYA centres in the UK or at partner RYA centres abroad.

INLAND BOATING IN BRITAIN

B

ritain is blessed with some 3,000 miles of navigable rivers, canals and lakes.

Rivers are generally quite wide, are subject to a flow of current, have few locks, and where there are locks, such as on the River Thames, these are usually fairly wide, allowing the passage of boats of a wider beam.

Britain’s canals on the other hand are mostly quite narrow, with mainly unmanned locks only some 7 feet wide, thus restricting their use to boats with a narrow beam.

Lakes, such as those in the Lake District or in Broadland, are not subject to any restrictions in terms of a boat’s beam or draught nor, apart from the lower reaches of the Broads, are they subject to tides or currents, although the larger lakes can become quite choppy in windy weather.

CHOICE OF BOATS

A wide variety of boats are to be found on Britain’s inland waterways, amongst which the following are most commonly seen.

GREEN BOATING

Concerns for the environment, and to reduce noise pollution too, electricpowered boats are becoming more popular, although at present most of these are ‘day boats’ without sleeping accommodation. Of particular importance for the local environment, to reduce noise and pollution, is the strict observance of speed limits; unfortunately some owners of fast craft seem to think that they are immune from speed limits...

Of course, the most environmentally friendly boats of all are those powered by wind – i.e. sailing cruisers and sailing dinghies; sailing is mainly popular only on wide rivers such as the lower reaches of the Thames, or in areas such as the Lake District or the Norfolk Broads, or on large reservoirs where dinghy sailing and racing is popular.

IS IT FOR YOU…

Operating a boat, whether it is your own or a hired one, on Britain’s inland waterways is not difficult, and in most cases it is actually easier than on mainland European waters because Britain’s inland waterways are nowadays almost exclusively used by pleasure craft whereas the larger European rivers and canals are shared with commercial vessels. The main consideration on Britain’s canals is the fact that, unlike most European waterways, locks in the UK are often un-manned meaning you need to operate them yourselves.

For those who may prefer to get to know Britain’s inland waterways without using a boat there are also lots of attractive and interesting walks beside our rivers and canals, many of which are wellworth exploring on foot or by bicycle.

TRADITIONAL CRAFT

On rivers and lakes there are many wide-beam cruisers, specifically designed for use on inland waterways – usually these have plenty of deck-space and have a centre steering position or cockpit, but some have the steering position forward and many smaller ones have the steering position right aft.

The larger ones are usually powered by inboard engines, mainly diesel engines, while many of the smaller ones have outboard engines. You may also come across sea-going or estuary cruisers which are more powerful, better equipped

for longer voyages and these days are often steered from a fly-bridge which is a secondary steering position on top of the cabin. This arrangement is fine on larger rivers and estuaries where there are no low bridges but this, and their wide beam, restricts their use on narrow rivers, such as many on the Broads and on canals.

There are also smaller boats, many of which can be trailed behind a car, and these include small narrow-beam canal cruisers and estuary-going outboard cruisers.

Probably the most interesting craft to be found on inland waterways are the traditional narrowboats measuring up to 70 feet long. Steered from a position right aft, they are mainly powered these days by diesel engines and are often beautifully and imaginatively decorated.

On wider waterways you may also come across varieties of former working barges, nowadays often converted to use as a floating and mobile home.

These include traditional Thames barges, peniches from France and Dutch barges, however these are all wide-beam craft which restricts their use to wider rivers and lakes.

Must-visit sailing itinerary hotspots for adventurers in the Mediterranean.

In light of the recent exponential rise in interest around both adventure and Mediterranean sailing holidays, Becky Hutton, Holiday Planner at Sunsail, has outlined her top sailing spots in Croatia and Greece for adventurers, from the caves of Kimolos to the lavender labyrinth in Rogoznica Town.

Komiža town is the perfect starting point for an adventurous Mediterranean sailing itinerary as it is in the perfect location to visit the Blue Cave, six miles away on tiny Biševo island. The light bends in perfect angles to make the cave illuminate blue, and is best suited for a visit when the sun is at its highest point. The cave is under protection, meaning you cannot enter it with your own dinghy, but can be taken in for a 20-minute tour.

That can either be arranged directly from Komiža with a speedboat, or after mooring in front of the cave entrance, when the tour guide picks you up on their boat.

Omiš

Nestled between two cliffs at the mouth of river Cetina, Omiš in Croatia is the symbol of active and adventure tourism. The river and cliffs assure for breathtaking canyoning, rafting, zip-lining, hiking and rock climbing experiences that you can find nowhere else in the Mediterranean. You will also find a long, sandy public beach where you can spend hours sunbathing and snorkelling to your heart’s content.

Ravnik Island

Ravnik Island is an adventurer’s paradise thanks to the idyllic Green Cave, protected since 1967 as a geomorphological monument of nature. Kornati National Park

Kornati National Park is a group of 89 remote and barren islands, presenting countless opportunities to explore, discover and have fun.

With secluded islets and reefs to uncover, the park is often described as a ‘Nautical Paradise’. As the park is so protected, mooring is only permitted in 20 dedicated bays while anchoring is forbidden, keeping your experience quiet and tranquil. Žirje

The most distant, permanently inhabited island in the Šibenik archipelago, Žirje is an area of natural beauty. The island has a long history; it was once an outpost and the remains of the Byzantine fortress from the 6th century still stand today.

The rocky coastline is littered with beaches, coves and coral reefs. Žirje also has some great diving sites that are ideal for adventurous sailors to explore. There are two sheltered bays particularly popular with sailors: Stupica and Tratinska. Both have mooring buoys and a restaurant. Rosa’s restaurant in Stupica bay offers a fresh fish or meat option daily and is known for excellent Dalmatian food!

GREECE Kimolos

Named after the unique kind of white rock-chalk dug there from the 18th century, Kimolos is a must-visit if you are sailing around Greece and looking for an adventure like no other. You can explore the caves around the island and swim in the turquoise waters. If you love hiking, you only have to equip yourself properly and get some information about the routes. The village, the only settlement on the island at the hill of Mount Xavlobouniou, will charm you with its simplicity.

Kythnos

Located in the western Cyclades, the island is also called Thermia because of the thermal spas which operate until today. Today the island is very popular as it includes many bays and small coves for exploration. One of the most famous sights is the Cave Katafiki, the biggest cave in Greece. Visitors have the opportunity to walk the narrow paths and discover several archaeological sites. After discovering the wonders of Cave Katafiki, why not taste the traditional cuisine of the island. The best-known food is Revithia in the oven and pies with cheese.

Milos

Milos is the most exotic island in the Aegean Sea and the most impressive with yellow, orange, white and red volcanic rocks scattered across over 70 beaches. Palaiochori, Papafragas, Gerontas, Firiplaka, Tsigrado, Plathiena beaches are definitely worth a visit, whether you want to swim, snorkel or sunbathe. The caves Papafrangas, Sarakiniko and Katergo were used as hideouts for pirates of the Middle Ages, and traces of their ships can be found next to the caves.

Small Cyclades

A chain of small islands in the eastern part of the Cyclades, there are many Small Cyclades but only four are inhabited: Donousa, Iraklia, Skhinousa and Koufonisia. Spend your day exploring the islands, swimming in the crystal clear waters and enjoying a siesta. These peaceful islands offer the ultimate relaxation after visiting party central, Ios. The islets Aspronisi, Ofeidousa and Argilos are located at the northern part of the island and can be visited by boat. You should not miss the opportunity to explore them and swim in their charming, cooling waters which are ideal for snorkelling or spear fishing. If you are exploring the Small Cyclades, stop off at the Cave of the Sacred Icon of Agios Giannis. This is Iraklia’s most interesting walking destination, around two hours from the main port. The entrance leads to a sequence of caves with an abundance of stalagmites and stalactites.

Kea

Kea (or Tzia as it is also known as) stands out from the other Aegean islands for its rich flora, rare plant species, olive groves and vineyards. It is also home to the largest oak forest in the Cyclades making it a great spot for birdwatching. Discover 60km of hiking trails leading to monuments, buildings, hidden coves, caves and beaches. You will never run out of areas to explore and beauty to discover. Perfect for adventurers as well as nature enthusiasts.

Paros

Paros is the third largest island of the cycladic complex, boasting a stunning mountainous landscape with 120km of coastline featuring sandy beaches and clifftop villages. Take advantage of the Meltemi wind and enjoy a day of thrilling watersports such as kitesurfing and windsurfing.

ALCOHOL LIMITS

FOR LEISURE VESSELS? O

n 20 December 2024 Coroner Rachael Griffin published her Prevention of Future Deaths Report following the death of David John Haw in May 2022, who was thrown from a RIB after it collided with a diver buoy in Poole Harbour. The Master of the RIB, Morgan Smith, was under the influence of alcohol. Smith was found guilty of gross negligence manslaughter, having failed to ensure the safety of those aboard his vessel, and sentenced on 21 November 2023 to three years’ imprisonment.

Ms Griffin’s report was sent to the Secretary of State for Transport and the Chief Executive of the Royal Yachting Association, with their responses required by 14 February 2025. In particular, the report states that “It is not illegal to helm a pleasure vessel under the influence of alcohol or drugs” which “could lead to a future death” given their “impact upon perception, control, judgement and decision making”.

Industry bodies, such as the British Ports Association and the UK Harbour Masters Association, have expressed deep concern for years in relation to the lack of national regulations related to alcohol use that those in charge of leisure vessels are held to, compared to commercial vessels.

No BAC Limit for Leisure Boat Users

While there are general offences relating to impaired navigation of a vessel, due to alcohol or drugs, there is no specific blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit for people operating non-commercial vessels. Enforcement of existing offences relies on demonstrating impairment of a person’s ability to operate safely, which is a difficult threshold to measure.

Section 100 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995 (Owner liable for unsafe operation of ship) makes it an offence for the owner (or charterer / manager) to fail “to take all reasonable steps to secure that the ship is operated in a safe manner”. Section 8 of the Merchant Shipping (Watercraft) Order 2023 makes this offence applicable to any watercraft in the UK. While these provisions do provide a potential avenue for prosecution of individuals operating leisure vessels under the influence of alcohol, alcohol is not specifically mentioned in the provisions, with

the focus being on the owner’s duty to ensure safe operation of the vessel.

Section 58 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1995 (Conduct endangering ships, structures or individuals), which is applicable to watercraft by virtue of section 6 of the Merchant Shipping (Watercraft) Order 2023, makes provision for prosecuting the dangerous operation of a watercraft or ship, which can include being under the influence of alcohol or drugs. However, being under the influence of alcohol or drugs while in charge is not an offence on its own. The Master must do, or fail to do, something that causes “the loss or destruction of or serious damage to” their watercraft or ship, or any other watercraft, ship or structure, or “the death of or serious injury to any person”.

Commercial vs.

Recreational Vessels

Commercial vessels are subject to rigorous regulatory frameworks, including BAC limits for Masters, demonstrating a clear disparity in the safety measures applied to commercial versus recreational vessels. This is despite the fact that there are circumstances in which the same type of vessel can be operated either for commercial or leisure purposes (e.g. a RIB) under comparable conditions.

Statutory Harbour Authorities One of the arguments against introducing national BAC limits for leisure boating is that Statutory Harbour Authorities (SHAs), who have the responsibility for regulating the waters within their jurisdictions, should be the regulators to introduce BAC limits through byelaws or general directions.

However, while SHAs have a better understanding of the geography and recreational usage of their jurisdictions than national regulators, SHAs do not have appropriate powers to insist on mandatory breath (or other) tests to measure BAC, making enforcement difficult.

Even putting the enforcement point aside, regulating BAC limits through SHAs’ Byelaws or General Directions is still a poor solution because there are large areas of inshore waters that are not governed by an SHA.

Reactive Regulation

Another argument against introducing BAC limits for non-commercial vessel users is that in the case of David Haw’s death, a successful prosecution for gross negligence manslaughter was brought against Morgan Smith.

But as Mr Haw’s parents described in their victim impact statement, his death was a “totally unnecessary disaster” and it falls on the UK marine industry to ensure that “such a tragic case doesn’t occur again” (Mrs Justice Cockerill on sentencing Mr Smith).

While the Marine Accident Investigation Branch has recommended setting legal BAC limits for leisure vessel operators, the RYA questions whether increased regulation would have prevented the incident, preferring to promote education and voluntary training in relation to safe operations in the marine environment over legislation.

However, good practice only applies to those who choose to follow it and they are not protected when others do not. Many recreational boaters receive no formal training and some lack experience. Additionally, however experienced you are, it is not in dispute that alcohol impairs judgement and reaction times.

The principle of the introduction of BAC limits on recreational vessel users is not to target the responsible, but to create a framework that addresses and deters dangerous alcoholrelated behaviour before tragedy occurs. The lack of nationwide limits creates a sense that it is acceptable to drink alcohol and be in charge of a vessel. It is not, and a nationwide limit would be easily understood (in the same way driving limits are)

and would reinforce the dangers associated with doing so. The legislation that introduces the national limit could also ensure sufficient powers are provided to enforce it (for example mandatory breath (and other) testing).

Lessons from Overseas

Many countries already regulate alcohol use in recreational boating: United States: Boating Under the Influence of alcohol or drugs (BUI) is a federal offence, with serious penalties. One-third of all boating fatalities in the US are alcohol-related.

Latvia: Recreational boaters are subject to the same BAC limits as vehicle drivers.

Australia: Almost all jurisdictions in Australia impose a BAC limit (the same as for vehicle drivers) for those operating leisure vessels.

A Necessary Standard: Time for Change

The UK has an opportunity to bring its regulations in line with international safety standards and take meaningful action on the recommendations made by Ms Griffin in her report. The current system relies too heavily on reactive enforcement through powers not specifically designed to deal with the situation and voluntary compliance.

The introduction of a national BAC limit for recreational boaters is not about overregulation, but about ensuring a baseline of safety for everyone on the water. A legal limit creates a clear cultural and legal standard against alcohol usage by those operating recreational vessels and it is this cultural shift, supported by well publicised enforcement that will save lives.

Fishing for mackerel from a boat is a fantastic way to enjoy a day on the water with the whole family. These fastswimming fish are a joy to catch, and with the right rig and techniques, you can increase your chances of success.

Whether you are using a rod or hand line, here is a step-by-step guide to help you get started.

3. Sabiki Rig – A multi-hook rig with brightly coloured beads or feathers, ideal for when mackerel are in a feeding frenzy. Lower the rig, jig it gently and keep an eye on the water to spot feeding activity.

MACKEREL RIG OPTIONS:

Best Time and Techniques: Mackerel are most active from late spring to early autumn, with early mornings or late afternoons being ideal. Drift or troll over deeper waters or locate schools by watching for bird activity.

If you plan to keep them, ensure you store your catch on ice or in a cool box for the freshest taste. With the right rig and technique, a successful day’s fishing for mackerel is just around the corner!

1. Feather Rig – This popular rig uses brightly coloured feathers or lures on multiple hooks (usually 3-4). To use it, drop the rig into the water, allow it to sink, then slowly retrieve it, jigging it up and down to mimic the movement of small baitfish.

A RECORD-BREAKING CRABBING EVENT! The shores of Portchester Castle in Hampshire came alive as a record 521 participants joined the 5th annual Crabbies Competition. Under sunny skies, families and friends cast their lines in hopes of catching the heaviest haul.

The top spot went to 11-yearold Eddie, whose crabs weighed an incredible 2,175g, earning him a brandnew rod and reel from Angling Direct PLC. Prizes for 2nd - 10th place included YETI tumblers, Lowrance Fishing dry bags and Crewsaver goodie bags.

It was a ‘crab-ulous’ day to remember! Angling Spirit’s Spirit of the Day brought families together for a free, fun-filled event focused on crabbing, conservation and coastal education.

With help from Portchester Sailing Club and the Sea Angling Classic team, kids learned about native crab habitats and responsible angling, while parents joined in the fun. All gear was provided - and in a sustainable touch, lines were recycled for future use!

EASIER CHECK IN/OUT FOR CRUISING TO FRANCE If you are heading to the Channel ports of France, then head to the CA website for a summary of information on the requirements for checking in and out.

EU Regulations require those arriving in France (and other EU/ Schengen countries) from outside (e.g. UK and the Channel Islands) to check in and then check out when departing. This requires arrival and departure to be at a Port of Entry.

However, in 2024 the French government approved a ‘National Protocol of Cooperation’ between the national officials responsible for checking in and out the pleasure boat crews (Police Aux Frontiere and Douane) and the federation of marinas (La Fédération Française des Ports de Plaisance - FFPP). This formalised that local agreements could be negotiated between certain marinas and the officials at ports of entry so that checking in and out could be achieved more conveniently by emailing forms.

BRINGING FOOD INTO GB – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW As of April 2025, the UK Government made changes to the foodstuffs, including certain meat and dairy products, that you can bring back into Great Britain. Please note there are different rules for Northern Ireland. This is a temporary tightening of the rules as a result of animal disease outbreaks (including foot and mouth disease) in the EU. These restrictions also apply to pet foods. People intending to travel back to GB should familiarise themselves with the types of food that are restricted and ensure they do not have these onboard.

HOW DOES TEMPORARY ADMISSION WORK AND WHEN IS IT RELEVANT? The CA’s Regulatory & Technical Services group share an update on Temporary Admission, which is a means of entry for foreign boats for limited periods without the need for formal importation and customs duties.

EU VAT PAID BOATS NO TEMPORARY ADMISSION REQUIRED

During a spot check, customs officials may assume, because you fly a non-EU flag, that your boat is not EU VAT paid.

They can also ask you to sign a ‘TA form’.

If your boat is EU VAT paid, you should not sign such a form and instead show them the original VAT invoice or other documents evidencing the EU VAT paid status. On that basis, the TA restrictions do not apply to your boat. Your boat can stay indefinitely within the EU and retains the EU VAT paid status if it is sold whilst within the EU to anyone else. Signing the TA form may mean that customs will try to enforce the 18-months restriction imposed by the TA regime on your boat, which would be incorrect in this case.

NON-EU VAT PAID BOATS TEMPORARY ADMISSION

Temporary Admission Regime: If your boat is not EU VAT paid (this includes boats that are UK VAT paid but were in the UK on 31 December 2020 23:00 UTC) you may cruise in EU waters for a period of up to 18 months each time without incurring EU VAT (and customs duties). This assumes you are indeed only intending to be temporarily in EU waters. If you intend to use the boat permanently in the EU, you need to

declare the boat and pay VAT (and possibly customs duties, depending on the origin of the boat) upon first import.

If you are temporarily in the EU, you do that under the customs regime of ‘Temporary Admission’ (TA). You do not have to apply for this regime.

It is automatically granted when you cross the EU outer sea border. You must still use a Port of Entry where this is required, but to declare crew for immigration purposes and goods rather than the vessel. (if you have goods to declare, e.g. alcohol or tobacco in excess of the allowances, you must alert local customs).

EU TA is only available to nonresidents of the EU. Nationality of the owner or boat registration is not relevant.

Temporary Admission Into The UK: UK VAT paid boats: no Temporary Admission is required into the UK. Non-UK VAT paid boats: Temporary Admission into the UK: The rules are similar to these for the EU - there is no port of entry requirement, but vessels must follow the rules from Border Force, as set out here. A UK resident cannot bring a non-UK VAT paid boat in the UK under Temporary Admission; they must declare the boat for importation.

DROPPING OUT?

Amelie Ballantyne is a 15-year-old sailor from Devon who is already proving to be a determined, and successful, dinghy sailor. This month Amelie has been considering the challenges often faced by female sailors and how we can encourage them to stay with the sport.

A

s a teenage girl who loves sailing and racing, something that has become more noticeable to me in recent months is how many more teenage boys there are than girls at large events. It is quite well publicised by Sports England that the drop out rate for girls around my age in many competitive sports is quite high and I have been interested to find out why this is the case in sailing.

In February I visited the RYA Dinghy & Watersports Show and was interested to hear Olympians including Ellie Aldridge, Hannah Diamond and Eilidh McIntyre speak openly and honestly about their personal experiences and challenges as female sailors.

This inspirational discussion showed me that even the best struggle sometimes, but being around other female sailors really helps. The running theme was that it is not always easy for

Now, if females Olympians find it hard sometimes, what hope do the rest of us regular teenage sailors have? I put a poll on my Instagram account to find out why my followers felt females drop out of sailing.

Amazingly, I was inundated with messages and opinions from both male and female sailors and several noticeable themes kept cropping up: body-image, schoolwork, menstrual cycles/emotions, confidence, judgement/fear of failure, male negativity and lack of opportunities.

This opened my eyes to the challenges of keeping female sailors in the sport, and how much needs to be done behind the scenes to address the many barriers to achievement in the sport that ultimately lead to dropping out.

For me, I have certainly had putdowns from the older men I sometimes race against at my club which can be hard to take at first. I also recognise that I am not as physically strong as boys my age. Someone once told me that boys need to do well to have fun, whereas

girls need to have fun to do well, and I really agree with this.

WORK TO BE DONE

One way to help girls keep sailing, therefore, is to surround females with other females and have fun and motivate each other. I have recently returned from an all-girls training weekend with the Magenta Foiling Team and it was awesome to spend a weekend in an allgirls environment without the pressure to keep up with the boys.

For me, I do feel that sailing is improving for girls, yet there is plenty more work to be done to highlight the amazing things female sailors are achieving. I will not be dropping out of sailing and really hope that some of my ideas here will help encourage more girls to stay in the sport. And as for those negative dinghy park comments, I recently chatted to British Sailing’s Catlin Williams who mentioned facing similar issues and her advice to me was “you just need to show them what you can do”, which is just what I intend.

HARDWAY SAILING CLUB

Founded in June 1945, Hardway Sailing Club is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year.

L

ocated in Gosport, within Portsmouth Harbour, this strategic location has played a significant role in maritime activities in the area throughout history, including its involvement during World War II, where it served as a primary embarkation point for more than 190 British, American and Canadian Landing Ship Tanks (LSTs) during the D-Day landings. The club has been actively involved with the local community such as participating in the D-Day 80 civic parade in June 2024.

After the war, in 1945 the paved area of the ramp that the LSTs used was fenced in and it became a Naval Balloon Depot. These balloons were carried by ships to protect them from low flying aircraft. This depot consisted of a large hangar for the balloons, several huts for the staff and a toilet block that is now the outboard store.

THE SAILING CLUB

Over the years, Hardway Sailing Club has grown into a vibrant community, offering excellent facilities for both local

and visiting sailors. The club boasts 500m of landing pontoons, providing accessibility at virtually all states of tide, and offers a range of amenities including scrubbing grids, high-pressure jet wash systems and storage for tenders and cruising equipment as well as a vibrant social scene.

With a membership of approximately 600 families, the club caters to a diverse sailing community, engaging in various activities such as dinghy racing and cruiser rallies, and this year the club is visiting Cowes, Lymington, Bembridge, Marchwood and has an 80th anniversary rally to Cherbourg.

Commodore Mike Roberts says: “As someone who grew up at Hardway Sailing Club, it is a real honour to mark our 80th year as Commodore. What started as a small, passionate group has become a second home for so many of us over

Green Light For Tests

As part of its commitment to safety and wellbeing, MDL Marinas has been enhancing water safety awareness by equipping nearly 30 members of its team with hands-on, scenario-based cold water immersion training.

The practical training session reinforced MDL’s core value of safety and security, highlighting the importance of lifejackets and real-world self-recovery and rescue techniques for those working around water.

Delivered by health and wellbeing experts Vitae Vi, the programme featured classroom-based theory and scenario-led practical exercises. A unique aspect of the training saw staff entering an ice bath to simulate the intense physical and mental challenges of sudden cold water exposure.

This immersive experience highlighted how cold conditions can impair breathing, movement and decision-making – critical moments where clarity and calm are vital.

Dan Hughes, co-founder of Vitae Vi, stresses the importance of realism during the training: “When people fall into cold water, they are rarely prepared. They are usually near the edge, disoriented and in shock – something stops them from getting out safely.

“This training gave the MDL team a chance to understand what that feels like, how to manage it and, most importantly, how to get themselves out of the water safely using simple, easily remembered techniques and protocols that save lives.”

AROUND THE MARINAS Aquavista’s Buckden Marina in Cambridgeshire is hosting a Marina Open Day on Saturday 19 July, and you are invited. Malta’s Grand Harbour Marina has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability and innovation within the marina sector, following a visit to Athens as part of the Power4Med Marina Managers’ Programme, a Mediterranean initiative supporting marinas in becoming more sustainable.

Safe Harbor has acquired Christophe Harbour Marina in St. Kitts. Together with Safe Harbor Puerto Del Rey, the Caribbean’s

largest marina, and Safe Harbor San Juan, Safe Harbor now offers more than 1,000 slips in the Caribbean.

Turkey’s Çeşme Marina has been awarded the International Renewable Energy Certificate (I-REC), confirming that 100 per cent of the marina’s annual electricity consumption — 3,414 MWh in 2024 — is sourced from renewable energy. Çeşme Marina is also investing in a seawater treatment plant using reverse osmosis technology, expected to be operational by the end of 2025.

This project will significantly reduce freshwater consumption.

MarineMax has officially opened the IGY Savannah Harbor Marina on Hutchinson Island along the Savannah River in Georgia, USA. This state-ofthe-art marina is designed to serve vessels of all sizes with world-class amenities, services and accessibility.

Portishead Marina is hosting a Berth Holders Summer Pary on 19 July with a buffet lunch and music provided by Hans and Therese.

Tred Avon Yacht Club, in Maryland, USA, has completed the second phase of a complete SF Marina overhaul with wave-attenuating breakwaters and finger docks. Phase one saw the replacement of the eastern marina enclosure with Type 400 SF Marina floating concrete breakwaters. The second phase replaced the western arm of the breakwater and added 12m of cast concrete self-supporting fingers with rounded ends.

TAKING THE PLUNGE

The Marine Management Organisation has given the goahead for testing and monitoring of a pioneering green energy Demonstrator model this summer at Falmouth Harbour’s Bay test-site for offshore renewables energy projects (FaBTest).

Southampton-based Buoyant Production Technologies now has an MMO license to deploy the small-scale Demonstrator at the FaBTest site between June and October – testing designs and technology destined to support Floating Offshore Wind, subsea carbon capture and other offshore industries.
