Ready for Kindergarten? We truly want them ready for their first ‘Rite of Passage’ Kindergarten. I’m a retired teacher and speech therapist, and just maybe you’ll find these 7 ‘Most Essential’ Pre-Kindergarten Skills ideas helpful. 1. An eagerness to learn (explore, discover, take initiative and persist). Change things in the baby’s room every 6 weeks. Hang older children’s crafts/artwork on the wall/ceiling closest to the cot. Rotate toys – put away some and bring them back out weeks later. Preschoolers emulate and imitate their parents. If they see their parents eager to learn new things then the preschooler will copy that. So parents; take on challenges (learn a musical instrument, learn a new craft, etc.) 2. Very switched-on listening, attention, concentration and memory. Sing a repertoire of nursery songs, and have toys that make sounds (noises, animal sounds, etc.). With preschoolers shopping, cooking and family trips offer opportunities to enhance these skills. Before shopping and cooking, tell your preschooler 4 items and have him/her recall the items several minutes later. On family trips, ask: “What did the GPS say?” 3. Playing well with others (compromising, turn-taking and problem-solving). Establish opportunities for interaction with peers right from babyhood. Have

a ‘Share Box’ – place six individual toys in it. Praise: “I love to see you sharing.” If they fight-over a toy, remove it. “When you show sharing that goes back into the box.” With the preschooler, crafts done in a small group builds sharing and teamwork. 4. A desire to be independent leads to self-confidence. Let Bub reach for toys, drink, etc. Let the toddler select daily clothes, help put toys away and choose preferred foods/drinks. Let the preschooler select/prepare meal items. Include the preschooler’s ideas whenever you re-arrange his/her bedroom. Stop doing things for the preschooler. A preschooler can select what to wear, make a bed, clean a bedroom, put soiled clothing into a hamper and do 3 chores every day. 5. Solid oral and language skills. Mimic Bub’s sounds so they will copy others’ speech. ‘Self-talk’ as you do things - “Wash dishes, mop floor, open door...”. Name bub/ toddler’s body parts. Encourage the toddler to name versuss merely point to things. Let the preschooler tell his/her order at restaurants. Make a point of asking questions that evoke lengthy phrases/sentences - use question-words such as, Why, How and What. Be all ears as your preschooler explains things. During TV ads, ask about the show you’re watching using Why, How and What questions. 6. Well ‘exercised’ processing

‘Match-Up’ – “Where’s the other ‘A’... ‘1’... ‘Red’ ‘Circle’...?” Do ‘Cement-Painting’. Put a drop of food coloring into individual plastic containers. Use an old paint brush to make letters, number and shapes on cement. Play ‘Find the Shape or Color’ – “Quick! Find all the squares in your bedroom”, etc. Print or type captions, in the ‘Family Photo Albums’ using simple words. My daughter started ‘reading’ at 3-years-old because she could read the captions in her ‘BabyToddler’ photo album. That’s an excellent ego-booster for the preschooler. Read stories religiously. “What could happen next?” “What has happened so far?” While shopping, play ‘Find the Number/Letter’ as you go up and down the aisles. Skills’. And, at that blogspot, you can submit any questions you may have. On the right side of this blogspot, click ‘Archives 2013’ and find ‘Great Beginnings for Bubs & Preschool Kids’. skills (auditory, visual and spatial). For bub refer back to ‘Skill 2’. Have lots of jigsaw puzzles for the toddler. Make ‘special listening shakers’ using empty baby food jars covered in dark tape. Pair the jars – i.e. 3 buttons in one and 3 in one other jar, 1 nail in one and 1 in another jar, etc. Toddler shakes and matches the pairs. With your preschooler, include prepositional words as you talk – ‘beneath’, ‘behind’, ‘over’, ‘above’, etc. For visual memory, while watching TV ads, ask questions like “What color was the man’s/woman’s eyes/shirt/car/house...” Play a ‘Whisper Game’. “We’re having a BBQ. Tell the person next to you something to bring.” Each person must repeat the whole ‘list’ before adding something new. Skill 7 (recognition of letters, numbers, colors and shapes). Have letters, numbers and colors near the cot. With toddler, play

POOR EXCUSE FOR A HIGHWAY Government responsibility? Keep First and foremost this time it’s my best wishes for all of you that have suffered losses in the recent Forcett bushfire(s). For those who lost pets, precious photographs and treasured things, I hope that you see them in your dreams. For those who lost everything, I wish you a strong and speedy recovery. Better days ahead and all that. What could we do for the Forestier and Tasman Peninsulas? How about a decent road? That thing called the Arthur Highway is a highway in name only and a bloody disgrace to all concerned. OK, there are some good sections but in parts the road is narrow with dangerous corners and a poor surface, and other bits (think turn out lanes) are positively dangerous. Whose responsibility is it to maintain and improve this road? Is it a Council, State or Federal

in mind that the road leads to one of the most visited Tasmanian tourist sites (Port Arthur Historic Site) and the condition of the road takes on increased importance. What are our fearless leaders doing about the problem? I urge you to write to the responsible Tasmanian Minister (David O’Byrne) and our Federal Member for Lyons, Dick Adams. Now I have a confession, I don’t like Dick. Recently Dick was here (in the invisible part of his electorate) for the opening of the first stage of the Three Capes Track. Eventually that will mean an extra 10,000 walkers (in cars) visiting the Peninsula each year. He (Dick) helicoptered into the gig. Not for him travelling the highway, even in a limo’. While I’m at it how about funding for the Sorell bypass and fixing the daily peak hour traffic maul

from the Tasmanian Golf Course to Midway Point. Looks like the temporary fix at Midway Point has reached capacity. Turn the roundabout into a controlled traffic light intersection that affords priority to the ‘highway’. But what really makes me go orf is all youse (sic) drivers that can’t get within a bull’s roar of the ‘highway’ speed limit during daylight and in dry conditions (and on the good bits of road). I mean travelling at 65 - 70 kph when the limit is 100 kph is at best inconsiderate and at worst dangerous. When I’m stuck behind you travelling at 60kph down the hill onto Iron Creek bridge and you’re riding your brakes the whole way then that tells me that you don’t have the confidence, skill or awareness to be in traffic, or perhaps you haven’t discovered the delights of fourth and fifth gear. If you can’t do close to the speed limit (or keep up with the traffic flow) when appropriate then do yourself and everyone behind you a favour and pull over when it’s safe to do so, or catch a bus, please.
