Two keenly anticipated new buildings will be another step towards the rebuilding of Dunalley, gutted by the bush fires last year. One is the new school and the other is the Dunalley Hall. Many residents gathered together on Saturday 7th June to celebrate the “turning of the sod” by Audrey Deverell and Chloe Clements (pictured), a symbolic gesture showing the wonderful community spirit that continues in the area. The Hall, as all regional Halls are, will once again be an integral part of the township. Young teenager Chloe Clements and long time resident Audrey Deverell took the spade and together they dug in to the soil. Continued on page 3

Glamorgan Spring Bay Council has been working with volunteers and the Bicheno Earth & Ocean Network to control boneseed infestation behind the township of Bicheno. A fuel reduction burn was undertaken by the local fire service was undertaken covering approximately 90 per cent of the Crown Land Reserve in mid-October 2013 with most boneseed plants killed during the controlled burn. However a mass germination occurred in the following weeks.

In December 2013 Council was successful in obtaining a NRM South Bushfire Recovery Grant and some funding from Crown Land Services to control this Weed of National Significance. Boneseed is one of the worst weeds in Australia because of its ability to grow and spread quickly and out-compete native plants. A single plant can produce up to 50,000 seeds per year. Now is the time to get on top of boneseed if you have it on your property and report it to Council’s NRM Department 03 6256 4777.

Gateway Shopping Centre, Sorell

Shoes... on the move

There were big smiles as I walked into “It’s All About the Shoes,” that gorgeous shop at Sorell’s Gateway Shopping Centre! Not just from the friendly staff but from me as I saw the wonderful range of new ladies fashions displayed on the walls and hangers. I browsed and found these stylish designs a delight, very reasonably priced, coming in various sizes and so many lovely colours as well. It’s been four years since Tina Polley opened her shop and she is still there with happy customers coming in regularly. Her shoe range of Just Bee’s and Wild Delites are very popular, her winter ankle or long boots matches with scarves, gloves, hats, bags and even jewellery. A great variety! Women only……unless the men would like to pop in and buy the lady in his life something delectable! And why not? Tina believes in customer service and that is part of the secret of her success. Her staff are friendly and helpful and Tina says “many customers tell me they won’t go anywhere else and they enjoy the service we give them. They often come in for a chat and a browse.” She is planning to branch out and present her range to nursing homes and community centres, a great idea as some elderly cannot drive or get out and about so this will give them an in house shopping moment. Customers are given the chance to either pay the usual way, cash and eftpos, but Tina also provides a lay-by service which proves popular with customers, and they are open 7 days a week. Nice! saakia@myroundabout.com.au

Audrey, in her nineties, remembers well the good times held in the old hall when she was very young, the winter and spring balls, the fancy dress occasions but most of all the time she was married there. With Eric Hutchinson MHR and Rebecca White MHA and Mayor Kerry Vincent in attendance, Graeme Miller spokesperson for the Dunalley Hall Committee welcomed all who attended. “Without the support and assistance of community members this would not be happening” he said, also mentioning long time resident Judy Young as pushing hard for this hall to be built. “It’s been a long journey for the whole community,” said Kerry Vincent, “and I am confident that once the new school and hall is built there will be much community involvement with both. These buildings will provide a focus for all.” saakia@myroundabout.com.au

Southern Beaches Regional Arts (SBRA) were lucky to have Kerry Howlett as our Feature Artist in May, where she showed some of her most colourful works, and shared some of her most precious moments. Kerry was influenced by a craft based family background finding a self taught style and love for the art of mosaics. Her mosaic designs can be seen throughout this area from Sorell, through Dodges Ferry where her work is visible at the School, Okines, Carlton Park, and Nubeena to name a few. She included students from Sorell, Dodges Ferry and Dunalley schools to assist with her mosaic projects, fostering a creative atmosphere and fun aspects of mosaic art. Using recycled crockery, jewellery, anything desirable, Kerry visits

and any other outlet she can find in order to collect the pieces she needs. Teaching mosaic art to others through community houses, Kerry said “there is no right or wrong way to teach this art form.” SBRA present a Feature Artist (second Tuesday of month) at the Lewisham Tavern at 7pm. Everybody is welcome to come along, listen, enjoy and share their own art with others. saakia@myroundabout.com.au

Sights set on Matilda's Tasmania has created many athletes over the years and to keep creating talented athletes requires careful identification, and nurturing of young talent. To this end the Football Federation Australia has developed a Skills Acquisition Program for children in the age range of 9 - 13, with our state body one of the first states to implement this program aimed to increase participation of girls in the sport. A state wide competition was organised and under 13 squad was announced. Two local girls Orli Mastrocola from Dodges Ferry, and Piper Allanby from Kellevie had made the squad. The girls and the team are off to compete in a tournament being held in Coffs Harbour in July. Both girls have playing football since age five, and are now seeing the result of their hard work. The dedication of these committed footballers is very impressive as is the dedication and support of their families. When most kids are on the couch eating chips and playing video games these girls are training four days a week, and playing a game every week. With their parents rushing around the region, making sure the girls get to practice on time, and ready to play. At times games could be

held as far afield as Devonport or Launceston. The girls are lucky in having an experienced coach in Ben Horgan. He coaches their club side as well as the state under 13 side. As both Piper and Orli (pictured below) have set their sights on becoming Matildas. With no mobiles allowed, a strict schedule, and access to professional support this tournament will allow young players to have a taste of the life of a professional footballer. Roundabout joins everyone in the region in wishing both Orli and Piper good luck in the tournament, and we look forward to reporting their accomplishments for many years to come. tom@myroundabout.com.au

Unfettered landing While most visitors to Port Arthur today come via road, during convict times all people and goods were transported by sea and in recent years it has become a popular destination for cruise ships. Cruise ships moor in the harbour and tender their passengers ashore, where they explore the Historic Site and embark on shore excursions to other local scenic spots and attractions. A limiting factor to date has been Port Arthur’s jetty, having only one berth, shared with the ferry operating the Site’s harbour cruise. This bottleneck has been overcome with a new extension opened recently by Federal Lyons MP, Eric Hutchinson who was joined by Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority chief executive Stephen Large in declaring the jetty open. New safety rails, signage and lighting had been added and the jetty extended in length with the help of $148,500 in Federal Government funding the total

cost of $297,000. Port Arthur Historic Site Director of Tourism Operations, Anne McVilly, said that the new jetty worked brilliantly. “Tenders tied up can disembark passengers within about 90 seconds, which is around about 1/5 of the time previously taken.” Cruise vessels generally visit for a day on their way either to or from Hobart, allowing more passengers to visit Port Arthur and the chance to visit other areas and attractions during their time in Hobart. “We have had new bookings from cruise lines that have never previously visited Port Arthur effectively adding a day to their Tasmanian itineraries,” said Ms McVilly. “This is a significant and strategic piece of tourism infrastructure that will deliver benefits across the region.” Further information on the jetty and for cruise vessels visiting the Historic Site is available at www. portarthur.org.au/cruiseship Ed

He is part of a volunteer group of Repco owners who will build a solar system to power the local meeting house. The only power available in the village of Yalobi of about 200 people is a generator which runs the local meeting house. The

Must see

I went, with my family to the Lufra Hotel last weekend. Located on Eaglehawk Neck the hotel acts like an invitation to the historic Tasman Peninsula. Friendly staff are only too happy to give advice about the numerous attractions in the area. Situated on Pirate's Bay and facing the world famous tessellated pavement the hotel is heaven to anglers, surfers, and bush walkers. Depending on how active one wants to be one can spend the day in the great outdoors, or simply curl up by a roaring fire and watch for whales and dolphins in the comfort of the Cafe. Locals as well as visitors enjoy the many features of the Lufra Hotel. New chef Nic Derkley has created a Sunday afternoon feast with his tempting fresh from the sea, hot seafood buffet and for those who do not enjoy seafood, there is a traditional Sunday hot roast on offer as well. This seafood bounty is only made better by the dreamy desserts, fresh made cakes and slices. My children recommend, and I second, the light, airy and delicious chocolate mousse. With a daily happy hour at the public bar, juke box, and pool table the Lufra is a convenient gathering place for locals. Monthly trivia nights and Wednesday evening ‘get-togethers’ are part of what make the Lufra the place to be. Located about an hour from Hobart, its great day trip with the family, or visiting friends and relatives, and the historic artdeco styled Lufra Hotel is one of the iconic must-see places in Tasmania. I have fairly recently moved to Tasmania, and when I mention the Lufra, almost everyone has a story to tell. It is a spectacular day trip to the hotel, where you can go and create your own story and memories. tom@myroundabout.com.au

Fergy flogs ol deere continued from page 1 Old, but good It was overcast, with short, sharp showers appearing and disappearing boiler as I drove the family on unsealed roads to the town of Nugent. It is one of many small towns dotted across the region and but my trip was about the Fergy Derby held that day at the Nugent Hall. Built in 1934 with locally harvested wood, the Mercury covered the opening of the hall describing the hardwood floor as an “excellent floor for dancing,” quoting Mr. James Murdoch, M.L.C. “A hall of this nature would act as a meeting place for all the district, to come together and discuss their pleasures and problems.” When we reached the Fergy Derby the children raced out of the car, running to play with friends. They were very excited that the jumping castle was free, which they quickly took to mean that they could play as long as they wanted. Alternately playing and running into the Hall to dry by the fire, eat chips, and sausage sandwiches. The Fergy Derby was a feast of country skills and living. There was a long list of activities including wood cutting, shearing, and pie eating. The highlight was the contest between Massey Fergusson and John Deere tractors contesting the pulling of a large truck across a paddock. With mud flying from giant tractor wheels, the Massey Fergusson won the day. There was also an assortment of vintage tractors on display. The children splashed in puddles, inspected the old tractors, watched as long planks of wood were cut from a log, and generally had a great time playing outside. Dripping with water and mud, stuffed full of food, exhausted from running round, I packed them back into the car and drove them back home. The fun day continued into the evening, with music and the late inclusion of a mechanical bull. The Nugent Hall committee was pleased with the day, and plan on making this an annual event. I went into Lamb Place in Cambridge to visit Haros Distributors and speak with owner Peter Haros. This company is a bit of an institution in Tasmania, started way back in 1939 as Haros Boiler Co by George Haros, and now ably run by son Peter Haros and long time business partner Marion Hagenvoort. Many changes have happened over 75 years and for Peter Haros the main change has been extending the company into new directions based on a strong focus of customer satisfaction, and pride in delivering the same excellent work whether the job is big or small.Haros has a range of attractive and sturdy cappuccino machines, with a capacity of from three to 18 litres suiting home use, as well as business or commercial coffee lovers. Haros Distributors also provide a full range of services for the installation of blinds including free measure and quote, and will follow up the job all the way from the quote to the final installation. One of their more popular lines is Ziptrak Patio Blinds with an easy to use pull-down, push-up action. These blinds take away the petty annoyances with no exposed blinds to catch and flap in the wind, while offering sun, rain, wind and UV protection, in range of materials and colours. As well as these jobs and products Haros Distributors prides itself on being a general engineering company offering machining, welding, aluminum welding, fabrication and manufacturing. They are happy to take on the biggest jobs, as well as the small job for the hobbyist, even working with local artists. To find out more about the range of products and skills on offer visit the website www. harosboiler.com.au or call on 6248 4052. tom@myroundabout.com.au

MAKING GREY WATER WORK FOR YOUR GARDEN Even though dams are currently full in most parts of Australia and New Zealand, many home gardeners would like to develop good water habits to help the environment and keep water use to a minimum. Many find that learning to re-use grey water is one way of lessening their environmental footprint while still having a flourishing garden. With a little information and effort the grey water produced by most households can be used safely in most areas of

the garden. Untreated grey water from a direct diversion system is suitable for most of the garden except for vegetables and herbs or any other edible parts of plants that come into direct contact with the water. It’s safe for fruit trees and vines where the water is directed to the base of the plant away from edible fruits. (Don’t use it on acid loving plant such as citrus and blueberries though.) If you want your plants to be healthy, make sure you use

detergents that are intended for grey water use i.e. those that are bio degradable and low in salts. If you are starting from scratch and want to plan a garden that is very tolerant to grey water, stick to plants suitable for coastal areas as these have a high salt alkaline tolerance. Those that want to maintain their current garden using grey water should bear in mind that all detergents – even the most gentle – will make the soil more alkaline. Even if you keep the use of detergent and cleaners to an absolute minimum, acidloving plants may need extra attention to balance the soil. This is even more important if the local soils are already

alkaline. The wrong pH balance in the soil will limit plant uptake of essential trace elements such as iron and magnesium. Increasing the amount of organic matter in the soil might be all you need to do to address the balance. Organic matter such as compost buffers pH change and improves soil health. An application of iron sulphate will also lower soil pH. However, if you still see plants with weak and yellow growth it is worth applying a general trace element mix to the plants that need it or in extreme cases, add additional chelated iron.

Boutique to max art

Road kill repellant

Patricia Turner-Smith was told by a clairvoyant she would one day have a portrait painting in the renowned Archibald Prize. It has taken her awhile to fulfil this prediction, but recently she painted a portrait that is about to be sent off for selection. Water colour artist Max Angus about to turn 100 years of age, was the subject who sat for her, finishing in three sessions this work on canvas. She studied art under Jack Carrington-Smith, himself an Archibald winner. When she opened her first gallery, 'The Art Boutique' in Hobart, Barry Humphries did the official opening. She has worked in studios in Italy, New York and the UK, selling work through Wendy Whiteley’s Gallery, and living in the famous Chelsea Hotel alongside Brett Whitely and

other famous artists. Recently she held a solo exhibition in the Betty Nolan Gallery in the Salamanca Arts Centre, and works and exhibits from her Park Beach home. During the year she will be featured on ABC Stateline, painting the Max Angus portrait. Max himself, is a recipient of an OAM and will soon be holding his own exhibition at the Colville Gallery.

Makebelieve Children's Entertainment is a local business which has entertained children and adults alike for years. I was able to speak to founder of Makebelieve, and local force of nature, Michelle Pears over coffee at Three Peaks Cafe. “I've always been a fairy!”, Michelle said, laughing. “My grandmother kept a dress up box for us, and I have been playing dress up ever since.” From her shop Puddle Lane, Michelle soon discovered that she was a natural children's entertainer. From holding craft and fairy parties she has become one of the most successful children's entertainers in Tasmania. If success is judged by personal satisfaction then her sunny personality and love of her work may mark Michelle as the most successful entertainer in Australia. Formed in 1999, Makebelieve includes Jim Beresford, who arranges the music and plays piano, and David Carr on guitar. Makebelieve has entertained a generation of Tasmanian children, at schools, at rural shows, at festivals, shopping centers and at birthday parties. This includes seven years in a row at AgFest. Having preformed as far afield as Burnie and Launceston,

Michelle now maintains a list of entertainers who are available for hire. The lesson that Makebelieve gives to children is “We can be whatever we want to be, we just need to use our imagination,” Michelle said. "This is a lesson that parents appreciate as well. “The kids are the star of all the shows, Makebelieve encourages the children to take part in the shows.” From my experience in seeing Makebelieve is that the children do not need much encouragement. Makebelieve Children's Entertainment can be contacted on 0407 851 706 or visit the facebook page. I will leave the final word to a pleased customer, “Parents, don't even hesitate book Make Believe for your next party!’ tom@myroundabout.com.au

Be whatever we want

In Tasmania most of us drive roads every day that we share with the local wildlife and there is probably nothing worse than seeing big grays, possums, wallabies, and heaven forbid; devils lying on our roads and roadsides. While driving carefully mitigates the likelihood of contributing to the roadkill maybe there is another way. You can buy roadkill repellent nozzles easily self-fitted to the front of your car. They generate a high frequency sound wave which warn approaching animals away from a moving vehicle. Reader Robert Thompson says, "since installation some 2 years ago we had no road kill. "Before that we had an unavoidable hit and car damage every couple of month," said Robert. "We highly recommended for all regional vehicles." They are easy to get hold of at a mere cost of $5 from the Greens Shop, 208 Elizabeth Street, Hobart, or give them a call on 62369334. Worth doing; protect these animals, protect your car, and clean up our roadkill strewn roads. Ed

Trivia war

Following last editions challenge for teams to take on the reigning 'WOMBATS' champs a good showing was made in a points face off between the Wombats and the 'Tripod' contenders. It happened at the monthly Eaglehawk Neck Trivia Challenge held at the Lufra, but once again the Wombats reigned supreme, but only by a mere one point after a tie-break playoff. In a second and reinforced visit from Claremont resident Matt Priest, a third contending team, 'The Whovians', joined the fray. The gauntlet has been thrown down, those Wombats* that 'do what wombats do' must get their comeupance. The Lufra has thrown in 'lunch for four' at its famous Sunday Seafood Lunch for the first team that brings down them Wombats. Next Trivia battle, July the 12th, 7 for 7.30pm, Lufra Hotel, Eaglehawk Neck. Ed

Either that or they are not reading this monthly paper. Shame!!! So let’s step it up a notch! A thought for Sorell! Please respond!! In Oz we have the Big Banana, the Big Pineapple and others. There’s no BIG anything here! Why not have one in Sorell…….and we can do better than a Big Something or other……let’s build a fantastically ornate and colourful monument!!
