Those poles! Just love the ride home on the way to Sorell and beyond, hurtling along the causeway waiting to break through those incredibly old trees, which, over time, have produced an archway to Sorell. Long may they continue to grow!!! Only to be confronted by the ugliness of one power pole after another on the left, each sticking out into the road sprouting numerous unsightly wires which spread their coils and lines along their heights. YUK!!!!!! Offensive to the eye! They just go on and on! To bury this electrical shock would cost a mint so I expect that would have that on the back burner for the next twenty years if not more. BUT!!!! And yes……there’s always a BUT and always a possibility of a solution. Let’s think outside the square! Let’s pretty up the poles, make them an entrance feature to the township….. …can’t do much about the wiring I’m afraid! You’ve heard of “Blue Poles”? That famous painting none of us can afford? cont. pg 5

Last Roundabout Many of our readers and supporters have already hear the word, this is the last Roundabout. Closing the publication is pretty tough, running the publication was getting tougher, but closing in an orderly way is right. What we will miss is the people it has gathered, the stories and issues aired and the purpose it served in showcasing our local businesses our communities. Those are the parts that will be missed, but sure to be overtaken by other communication mediums. All very philosophical and mature, however emotion does take a front seat in producing or closing a publication such as

this. The emotion of knowing that relationships forged over years will take a lesser or different place. That those you have become fond of and have relied upon to do their bit will be seen or corresponded with less. Roundabout has adopted some community favorites; SOS, Spring Bay Theatre, Orford Odeon, The Village, the Houses at Okines and Dunalley, the local show, Markets in the area, SBCS (the dumpers), landcare groups, guides, men's sheds; landed and at sea, and of course our councils in various degrees. Tony Gray has now returned from his trip to the village of Yalobi on the island of Waya in Fiji. Last month we reported that a small group of Repco auto repairers were going to install solar power to the Yalobi school building. Tony is pleased to advise their job is done connecting the school and school office, 4 children’s dormitories and the local church to the system. "The villagers were so happy, with lots of singing, dancing and meals shared," says Tony, "it was a very heartwarming and emotional experience which I would love to repeat someday." Tony would like to express his gratitude to the Sorell community for their kind donations.

Pittwater Community Centre, It has been a pleasure and a privilege to have worked with so many services involved with this Centre,” said Gennette. “ I would like to thank everyone for their support and I’m sure that the same support will be given to Jo. I truly loved working with all the committee, staff and volunteers at the Centre.” No stranger to the Centre, having worked with L’Angels, a driver mentoring programme, as well as six years with the play group, Jo is at present familiarizing herself with all that is involved with running the Centre in Hoffman Street, Midway Point. The Community Garden is a major project she would like to see running with much community involvement. Building up the play group and encouraging young people to get involved with the Centre is also one of her goals, enticing the younger generation by utilizing events such as cooking classes but she is also open to suggestions from the wider community. As it is, roughly fifteen youth meet every second Wednesday to socialize, play games and have a meal. Getting the word out there that the Centre is there for everyone and wanting to boost awareness, Jo is working on distributing fliers and posters advertising the Centre. Jo Roland is enjoying her position and can be contacted by ringing the centre on 62651155 or emailing her on jo@pittwatercommunitycentre.org

Environment defense illegal? Art Acquisition Prize and Exhibition On 28 June 2014, the Liberal party’s federal council unanimously passed a motion to move to strip environmental charities across the country, including Environment Defenders Offices (EDO), of tax-deductibility status. Federal member for Bass, Andrew Nikolic, put forward the motion, claiming that EDOs are amongst groups that “attract concessions and donations, then engage in illegal activities” (ABC News, 29 June). EDOs across the country have strongly refuted these claims. EDO Tasmania is a community legal service providing advice about environmental and planning laws and assisting people to participate, lawfully and effectively, in decisions that affect them. They help to provide Tasmanian coastcarers, environmentalists and local communities with expert legal advice when they need it.

Pres-Reveg

EDO says their lawyers are professional, dedicated and wellrespected. The advice provided keeps many cases out of court, saving taxpayers and developers money (Law Society President, Anthony Mihal The Mercury, 16 June). EDO’s capacity to deliver an important community service has been significantly restricted with the recent termination of core funding. Now efforts to remove the benefit of tax-deductibility for EDO donors is another attack on the provision of services to Tasmanians. Motions passed by the federal council do not dictate Liberal party policy, so it remains to be seen whether any legislative moves will be made to alter tax-deductibility rules for environmental charities. While you still can, please make a tax-deductible donation www. givenow.com.au/edotas EDO Tasmania

A unique artwork ‘Preservation’, was created by Di McPherson and Christopher Cowles to benefit the Dunalley Neighbourhood House Revegetation Program. It consisted of donated plant stock placed in glass Fowler preserving jars and was shown in the exhibition ‘Epicormia’ held earlier this year in the Salamanca Arts Centre Long Gallery. Di and Chris stayed and fought the 2013 bush fires at their Connellys Marsh home and the artwork title was inspired because the jars had survived. They were arranged in a pattern around one of the wooden pillars in the Gallery and visitors to the exhibition were able to buy the jars containing the plants. The total raised was donated to the Program.

Sorell Council and Southern Beaches Regional Arts are once again teaming up to present the Annual Art Acquisition Prize and Exhibition in December this year. Approximately thirty artists have already expressed their interest in entering this prize filled event in seven categories. There is no doubt more artists will enter as the final closing date is not till October. In 2013 the Art Acquisition Prize went to Suzanne Banks whose winning entry hangs in the Council Chambers alongside the 2012 winner’s entry by Dawn Gatehouse. Many category Awards were presented last year and they will be again this year, together with minor awards, with the Exhibition including a three-dimensional section. Exhibition Organiser Saakia Itchins said “ It is always a joy when an artist enters, knowing that there is so much talent in our area. This is not a State-wide Exhibition, it’s basically a local one covering the Sorell municipality and Tasman. It is also for SBRA members who are mostly local. Last year was very successful. We had so much assistance from local sponsors, it was a terrific effort by all and we know that this year will be the same. Members of Southern Beaches Regional Arts are a hard working volunteer group, having established much in the last few years including monthly art gatherings, the recent Art Retreat, and the Exhibition in conjunction with Sorell Council but of course, without our wonderful artists none of this would be happening,” For artists wishing to enter please email for details.

Brian Mitchell, the recently endorsed federal Labor candidate for Lyons, is a strong supporter of Tasmanian medicinal cannabis trials. “If medicinal cannabis was called medicinal guava* every man and his dog would be clamouring to develop the industry,” Mr Mitchell said. “It cannot be stressed enough that medicinal cannabis has nothing to do with marijuana. “Medicinal cannabis relieves pain, improves lives, has the potential to be a significant crop and opens the door to the development of a Tasmanian pharmaceuticals industry. “We are already a worldleading producer of medicinal poppies and there is no good reason we should not aim for the same economic benefits with medicinal cannabis.” Mr Mitchell, who lives in Sorell, said he fully supported his state Labor colleagues’ push for trials in Tasmania. He urged readers to sign the petition online (Tasmanian parliament website) or at Rebecca White’s office in Sorell. Mr Mitchell is the first Labor candidate in Australia to be officially endorsed for the next federal election, which is due 2016.

At the Council meeting of July 15 the council passed the recommendation “That Council receive and consider the attached petition requesting Council to allocate funding and access external grants for a public swimming pool in Sorell.” Receiving the petition, and considering funding for a pool do not mean that a pool will be built in Sorell. The petition, organised by Roz Davies and our previous mayor Carmel Torenius, gathered over 1,000 signatures. Carmel Torenius said that “in my over twenty years activity in local government, this would be one of the largest petitions to council.” Tasmania in general, and Sorell have an older than average population. As Tasmania and Sorell ages a pool would provide not only social benefits, but also many health benefits for the residents of the area. Aquatic therapy allows for low impact exercise, this allows for gentle exercise for patients with arthritis. The natural buoyancy of water allows frail patients, or patients

with balance problems, to exercise without any risk of falling. Warm water also acts to increase flexibility and lessen stiffness. All this works to allow patients to perform a wider range of exercises and activities. Aqua therapy helps release endorphins, a natural pain killer. But it is not only the oldies who can benefit. Children with a range of special needs can benefit from pool therapy. Children with juvenile arthritis, autism, cerebral palsy, down’s syndrome, and other illnesses can benefit from a pool. As well a pool will help with general health outcomes for the community. While there many benefits to building a pool in the area, cost will be a problem. While the cost of building a pool may seem high to the council, the cost to the community of not being able to conveniently access such a marvelous tool for recovery will be far greater. Of course this will only happen if the community gets behind the idea, and presses the council at every turn to make a pool a reality.

It was great to see the Festival of Voices chose the East Coast for their first ever regional singing trail of Unplugged events. The first event was held at the Tasmanian Bushland Gardens celebrating the East Coast’s French Connection. Next off to Piermont Retreat, Swansea, White Sands Estate, Iron House Point and Devil’s Corner Cellar Door to complete an outstanding weekend of festivities with bonfires, fireworks, entertainers, food and local wines.

"It's back… Fractangular!"

Letters to ed It's very sad to see the end of a great community newspaper. Never faltering in its accurate coverage of news, social events and catastrophes. It made 52 issues - but they say "all good things must end" - but why? Such an informative community rag coming to an end? Fractangular visionaries and organisers Alison McCrindle and Sean Le Rossignol took a break in early 2014 to rest up after some busy times and to welcome a new addition to the Fractangular Family. Alison says that now the warmth of summer has well and truly passed, with a dampness in the air and fungi fruitful everywhere, winter is a time of hibernation and creation. "For those who know us, and for those who are new to us, we are working on our HOW MANY WILL THIS MARK? Fractangular Gathering, a three day open air collaborative arts festival held in Buckland, South-East Tasmania.

"Punters come to discover and experience a fusion of electronic and acoustic music genres with visual and performing arts across multiple stages. They participate in a variety of interactive workshops, the market, lounge, bar, artworks and bush while camping under the stars and pretty lights! Artists, local, interstate and international anticipate this time where they shine." 2015 will feature a selection of arts from across the globe; gypsy, Balkan, swing, folk, dub reggae, roots, jazz-hop, general bohemia & pirate caper, minimal tech and techno, progressive and broken beats, glitch, psytrance, psygrooves and plenty more.

Circus performers fresh off the streets and from the theatres of the World will entertain day and night with aw-inspiring talent and breathtaking stunts on stage and among other performances, on flying trapeze, highwire and more. "Did we say flying trapeze?" says Alison. "Yes we did, and you will have the opportunity to spread your wings and fly on this giant human swing." There will be some LARGE announcements to make in the next few months so be sure family and friends are signed up to the Fractangular mailing list via the website: www.fractangular.com. au and or like us on Facebook to keep updated. Sign up for updates and one lucky reader will win a family pass to Fractangular 2015. Spread the love, word, and festival as far as you can putting Fractangular on the festival circuit of Australia and the Earth! Fractangular is grateful for support from Events Tasmania, Tasmanian Regional Arts, Ruffcut Records, Signarama, Coates Hire, Warp Magazine, Brockley Estate, Hertz Hire, Willie Smith Organic Cider, Mountain Goat Beer and The Homestead Tasmania. important background checks – previous rental history and employment record – is difficult when you are inexperienced or emotionally involved with the property. * For example, tenants might pay their rent up to date upon vacating but might have been a problem during the tenancy. Or someone might be in full time employment for many years and still not be a good tenant. One or two factors are insufficient to build up a profile of the prospective tenant. On the other hand, inexperienced do-it-yourselfers tend to ask for too muchinformation, which means they end up with a longer vacancy because they are never satisfied. Many investors are unaware

SELECTING THE BEST TENANTS Many property owners ask the wrong questions when looking at tenant applications, potentially turning away suitable tenants because they focus on irrelevant information. Asking for too much personal information or looking for tenants with a certain lifestyle is not only intrusive but could lead landlords to turn away potentially suitable tenants. It doesn’t matter if they have green hair or go to church or vote X, Y or Z – but it does matter that they have a good track record for paying rent on time!

Agents picking up the pieces after the event report that many people also don’t know how to analyse and interpret the information they end up with. Investors managing property for themselves often get too involved to be impartial. They know that maximising investment income is entirely dependent upon keeping arrears, vacancies and repairs and maintenance to a minimum and yield and capital appreciation at a maximum, but find it difficult to do in practice. Bicheno Little Penguin Project

This grand total represents the amount raised by the Social Club of the Sorell RSL in support of the Give Me 5 for Kids (GM54K) charity. Started back in the 1990's with a chance remark about the uselessness of the five cent piece on a radio program, “why don’t we collect all those useless 5 cent pieces – then donate the money to the Children's ward at the hospital?” As Mayor Kerry Vincent noted of local community efforts “from these little things, big things grow”. Over twenty years GM54K has matured into a major fund raising effort, supported by over 40 radio & TV stations across regional Australia. Supported by Heart 107.3, all money raised by the Sorell RSL will go to the Royal Hobart Hospital Children's Ward. The Sorell RSL has been raising funds for this cause over the past four years, averaging about $10,000 a year. This year, in only five week they raised over $21,000 dollars. The 23 RSL Social Committee members worked with much energy, enthusiasm and imagination to discover “what we can do if we all pull together.” On Friday the 18th July the RSL presented a cheque to Heart 107.3's Dave Noonan, a presenter of the aptly named Kim & Dave For Breakfast show. Having spent a bit of time in Sorell over the past few weeks Dave said “being at the RSL is like being at a family dinner”. After raising over $250,000 last year, GM54K was hoping to exceed that goal this year. With strong community efforts like Sorell RSL organised this goal can readily be reached. I spoke with Deb and Wayne Latham from the Social Committee and they praised “a team effort from a fantastic crew.” The Social Committee was very pleased with the amount raised. For such a fantastic fundraising effort there are too many people to thank in one short article, so The Roundabout would like to pass on the humble congratulations of Dave Noonan. “Thank you very much on behalf of the radio, and the Children's Wing of the Royal Hobart.” More information at http://www.giveme5forkids.com.au/

In December 2013 Glamorgan Spring Bay Council, BirdLife Tasmania, and NRM South partnered in the Bicheno 'Little Penguin' Project. The aim was to find out how many penguins there are in Bicheno and where they nest and breed. Information was gathered from Bicheno residents and ratepayers and a baseline survey was undertaken by Birdlife Tasmania. Birdlife Tasmania prepared a report of recommendations to maintaining a healthy and viable Little Penguin colony in Bicheno recognising that the Little Penguins are an integral part of the town’s character, tourism appeal, and economy. The project team would like to thank community members, business, and school for their

participation, telling us not only where Little Penguins are, but where they are not. If you would like a copy of the Bicheno Little Penguin Report 2013/2014 please contact Rosie Jackson at Glamorgan Spring Bay Council on 6256 4728 or rosie@freycinet.tas.gov.au

On July 15 Sorell council agreed to allow Southern Waste Solutions to build a waste remediation facility at the Copping Tip. A depot for treating contaminated waste. Amusingly all the men voted yes (Rob Leach, Graeme Evans, James Dunbabin, Brett McDonald, Lindsay White and Kerry Vincent), while the women councilors (Kerry Degrassi and Robyn Bunyan ) voted no. This new work is part of the Council's waste led recovery. As they seem to have few other strategies for regional development. Even Mayor Cadart of Glamorgan Spring Bay, while he may have gotten himself into hot water with his forthright views on his electorate, sees his region as

New hair studio very refreshing Every woman loves to have a new hair style……and often the guys do as well. Even if just a cut is required, a good cut is worth its weight in gold! So……. Wendy Iles is absolutely no newcomer to hairdressing. She has a full on, solid twenty-three years experience behind her. She cuts, colours, perms and offers eyelash and eyebrow colouring in a stress free environment where soft music plays in the background. In her own words Wendy says “ customers love the relaxed, quiet atmosphere here, there is no loud traffic noise and I’ve had very positive feedback and lovely comments since I opened a month ago.” That’s good news for her new business at “Refresh Hair Studio.” At 3 Garden Lane, Midway Point, and great news for those living close by as well as her most valued established and new customers!

“the Riveria of Tasmania”. He has a vision of making the East Coast a major tourist destination. The Sorell Council sees the area as being the rubbish tip of Southern Tasmania. With this new project that the council agreed to some 12,000 tonnes per year of contaminated waste being received at the site. This seems to be the way forward for SWS. Recent Mercury articles have pointed to some confusion, for on June 27 the Mercury reported that C-Cell was on hold. However, on June 14 SWS chief Christine Bell said “the company was working with customers to firm up a timeline for the controversial C-cell section”. Being unable to firm up a timeline

over the two years allocated by the council to commence work, Southern Waste was granted an extension. This new development will allow for remediation of contaminated soils, most likely hydrocarbon contaminated soils. Soils found at a vacant petrol station, for example. The main opponents of the C-Cell, the Southern Beaches Conservation Society, noting that the devil is in the detail said, “there has been a major step forward by Councils and state government with regard to waste management. The C cell is on hold, and Council is more open to looking at alternative solutions”. It is too soon to know what will happen, as there is more of this saga to play out, and I would think much is happening in the background. To resolve this problem, and to keep similar problems from arising, it is important for all levels of government to come together and to develop a long term, sustainable waste management. A plan that puts a premium on value adding, and extending Tasmania's “clean and green” brand. A plan that makes if uneconomic for industry to tip and run.

Wendy has some good special deals on offer till October. There’s a free Conditioning Treatment with every colouring, a perm and trim for short hair at only $50…. if a blow wave is added make it $60; fifteen foils for short hair for a great price at $35 and a chance

to win a $50 voucher with EACH hair service. That’s a pretty good start for a new business with a well-experienced hairdresser and a pretty good deal for customers! To make an appointment with Wendy ring 6265 3841. Enjoy the down time!

Don’t miss this chance to see one of the best and wittiest of the Doris Day/Rock Hudson films - Comedy/ Romance (1959) rated G. Playboy composer Brad Allen (Rock Hudson) and interior-decorator Jan Morrow (Doris Day) are forced to share a telephone party-line.

Naturally, their calls overlap at the least opportune times; this leads very quickly to them despising each other without ever meeting in person. To complicate matters, Jan’s boyfriend Jonathan Forbes (Tony Randall) also happens to be Brad's best mate. One night Brad is in the same club as Jan and once he gets a glimpse of her, it is love at first sight. When Brad quickly realises who Jan really is, he poses as a wealthy Texan (named Rex, of course!) to avoid revealing that he's her telephone rival - and then he turns on the charm. Can Jan resist? Will she twig who he really is? And will Jonathan twig what’s going on between his best friend and his girlfriend? Showing 7pm Tuesday 12th of August 2014 at the Orford Odeon @ Orford Primary. Doors open 6.30pm with Film start 7pm. Tickets $5.00, Licensed Bar / Snack Packs / Popcorn / Chocolates / Foyer Decorations / 4 Metre Screen www.orfordodeon.com

Spring Bay change-over Over 70 Rotarians and guests gathered on Saturday 28th June at the Orford Bowls Club rooms to witness the changing of office bearers for the coming year. During the evening of good fellowship and delicious food, new Rotarians Libby and Jerry Geen were welcomed into the service club by DGN John Dare. President Cliff Southorn expressed his thanks to all who had assisted the club during the year and tabled a report highlighting the club’s achievements; supporting the local schools, clubs, service groups, cancer support groups, and international Rotary projects such as an eye clinic in Nepal, polio eradication and student and young professionals’ exchange programs. Cliff wished the in-coming president Calvin Radcliffe an equally successful and rewarding year ahead. Calvin will be assisted by Scott Parker as the new club secretary. Guest speaker, Mr. Damian Bugg AM., QC, LLB., LLD., entertained all with his humour and his insightful look at many aspects of human nature and the law. First Constable Tony Buckingham

was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of the club by PP Neil Edwards, honouring his long and valued service to the Spring Bay district during many of his 47 years of service to Tasmania Police. Tony received a standing ovation from all present. We shall all miss him when he retires in a couple of weeks – but our doors will always be open to this special man.

With anticipation, she left the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus for the train ride to Pune, the home of Mr Iyengar the world's most respected living Yoga teacher. The Yoga space, it is smallish and modest, is packed with a mix of at least a hundred foreigners and locals. Mr Iyengar is ever present, practicing supported poses, at the ripe advanced age of 96. Art retreats at the Lufra

With almost twenty people taking part in the inaugural Southern Beaches Regional Arts Retreat at the famous Tasmanian Lufra Hotel in Eaglehawk Neck, the place was buzzing with talent. This winter weekend was one of pure sunshine in all respects. Nine workshops were on offer, running the whole of Saturday and Sunday morning. From studying a variety of paintings by past Masters to colour theories, from photography to wood carving, drum making to social media, painting to music, song writing and theatre games, the weekend was not just a fantastic learning experience but also full of fun and a wonderful break from the rough and tumble of life.It was the choice of participants to stay at this old art deco hotel for either one or two nights, with some booking in for the workshops alone. The Lufra manager Peter Derkley and staff could not have been more accommodating, assisting by providing workspaces for the workshops. Breakfast

was thrown in with the staying price and these were reasonable indeed. The service was magnificent throughout the whole weekend and nothing was too much trouble, even the late night hot chocolates were served with a smile on the Saturday night when the song and theatre groups presented the results of hard working participants. A few stayed on for the recently established Sunday seafood smorgasbord lunch, at a set price of $25 and it was delicious, certainly worth a Sunday drive and lunch. However you would need to book as it was packed. Already some initiatives are under way to make next year’s Retreat as good, if not better and everyone is welcome as it is not just for Southern Beaches Regional Arts members. Should anyone wish to know more about SBRA, its monthly activities, the Retreat and the Annual Art Exhibition, let alone other events, please contact their Facebook site or ring Michelle on 0407 851 706 or Saakia on 610 600 71

Book Now For Summer I Know it's hard to believe, but summer is just around the corner so now is the time to get the wheels in motion for projects you want done and completed by Christmas and New year. If you are a regular reader of Roundabout you would have seen Mick advertising with us for 4 years, and we have seen his business grow from strength to strength during that time. He is without doubt the man to get in touch with for all your Home renovation needs, garden designs and builds, home renovating and everything in-between. Also what a lot of people don’t know is that Mick is from the UK and has vast experience working on a wide variety of new and old buildings. “I have worked a lot in the UK on old listed buildings in places like Bristol and Bath in the West of England, which have buildings from the Roman era right up through the ages to Victorian properties. "A lot of the properties look like something you would see on the TV shows like 'Escape to the country'”, says Mick. So with Mick getting busier and busier it’s a wise move to plan ahead. Cut out and keep his advert and phone number and book him in. Mick said he would like to thank all at Roundabout for the fantastic editorials we have done for him and wishes us all the best for the future.

Show’n‘Tell at Lewisham

Connelly's Marsh textile artist Di McPherson talked about her artwork at a recent Southern Beaches Regional Arts gathering at the Lewisham Tavern. Di studied Commercial Art (now Graphic Design) at the Hobart Technical College and worked in the studios of Cadbury Fry Pascall, Claremont, Tasmania before travelling to Europe in the 1960s. Later she moved to Zimbabwe and stayed there for 14 years. On returning to Tasmania Di studied ceramics at the Tasmanian College of Advanced Education, gaining a BA in Visual Arts Teaching. The influence of her time in Zimbabwe was reflected in her artwork. 'I taught visual arts in high schools until 1990, when I left teaching to concentrate on my own work,' Di said. She then worked with community groups, created exhibition pieces and co-designed and developed a product called Silk & Ceramic. She attended various workshops on mud/earth pigment painting and natural dyes that influenced her work and took it in a new direction. Since that time she has experimented with many different natural dyes extracted from eucalypts, gum nuts, native cherry and wattle, to name a few. Di creates distinctive patterns and marks using unusual materials in combination with shibori resist techniques, creating her unique designs on silk and cotton fabrics. This research and experimentation has resulted in artworks that show her interest in mark and pattern making. These have been achieved by dyeing and over dyeing and the use of resist techniques including rusty screws, keys or nails. 'The Australian environment is the source of my inspiration and I endeavour to evoke this through my use of colour, shape and pattern.’ Di said ‘before the 2013 bush fire destroyed the garden I

extracted the natural dyes from the leaves, nuts, seedpods and bark from trees that grew near my seaside studio and complimented these with imported dyes where necessary.’ 'I use drawing, photography, painting, dyeing and printing on textiles to produce works that satisfy my creative urge to communicate my vision of the special place where I live.' Her work has been commissioned by the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Government House, Hobart City Council, the Premier's Department, and State Government. Di has also given many workshops overseas and attended International Natural Dye Conferences, as well as exhibiting her work in Tasmania and overseas. Liz Francis

Spring Bay variety night

Spring Bay Theatre Company, based at Triabunna, is turning back the clock with its Variety Night, a Show and Dinner evening that promises to be great entertainment! The production, by Artistic Director Dorothy Duncombe-Jackson, will be based on the old-time Music Hall shows that were so popular in years gone by, featuring favourite songs, ballads, monologues, melodramas, skits and more by the Spring Bay Theatre Company troupe. The audience will be encouraged to join in the singing and general merriment, and to bring their favourite limerick to read out. Prizes will be awarded to those who dress up in their best old-time finery so the evening should be lots of fun. The Variety Night will be held at the Eastcoast Central Watersedge Resort, Louisville Point Road, Orford, where Ryan and his team will serve dinner during the evening - included in the ticket price of $45. So dust off your oldstyle costumes, search out your best limerick (the sillier the better!) and come along to a great evening of song, laughter and great food. Groups of 8+ people will get a 10% discount on the ticket price. Singles and couples are welcome to join the Community Table if they prefer, which will add to the fun. The Variety Night is for one performance only, on Saturday 16 August from 6.30 pm, so don’t miss out! Bookings are essential and can be made by contacting the Spring Bay Pharmacy, Triabunna on (03) 6257 3684. Further information is available from Dorothy Duncombe-Jackson on 0428 267 195.

It's sorted (from pg 1)

Here are some interesting things the Swansea Primary School students learnt why we need to sort rubbish : • If you put your foods scraps in a compost heap that gets air it breaks down quicker and releases less greenhouse gases. • Every year Australians throw away $5.2 Billion dollars’ worth of edible food. • If you put the wrong things in the recycling it can contaminate it and that batch has to go to landfill. Some tips for looking after our planet • Don’t buy or order food you are not sure you will eat. • Save leftovers from a meal and eat them the next day. • Keep food scraps out of landfill by putting them in a compost bin or by feeding them to worms or chooks. • To reduce packaging waste buy a large box of snack food and use reusable containers Thank you to Robyn from The Ugly Duck Out, Glamorgan Spring Bay Council and the team at Keep Australia Beautiful for giving Swansea Primary School the chance to be part of the 'It’s sorted' project. Match veterans awarded

The Sorell Football Club has congratulated two of its favourite sons on playing their 200th match for the Club during this season. Luke White and Michael Evans have been stalwarts of the Club for longer than even I can recall, said Stephen Pears, Vice President and Life Member of the Club. "Both have been real die hard members supporting the club not only on the field but also off the field in various roles and socially", he said. Luke came to the Sorell club from Lauderdale and was accompanied by his brothers Jeremy, Matthew, Josh and Tim over the journey. He has been a popular member of the Club along with his whole family and all while being hard but fair at the football.

Michael alias MEvans joined the Club at a tender age of sixteen and played his fist senior game at that age. "He has been a great club man and coached the Colts over two season and was a real role model to the young lads of which many have gone onto play senior football", said Stephen. In other news, the Club has recently taken possession of a new honour board to celebrate the achievements of past players and officials. The honour boards were funded from a grant provided by the Sorell Council. President of the Club, Andrew Walker said the inclusion of the boards in the club rooms gave them a real feel of a Club with a great history and a place where past players would like to come and still feel part of.

Auto rotisserie

Jeff Brown of the Sorell Men's or give them a call on 0478 051 Shed says they want to build a 266 or email rotisserie gadget to mount the shed@sorellmensshed.org.au Men's Shed truck cab for repair. The rotisserie enables a vehicle body to be rolled, like a pig on a spit, to get the most convenient position for rust repair, welding etc. This eliminates the need to crawl on the shed floor to get at rusted areas. To enable the project Jeff says a variety of scrap steel is needed. "We already have some in the shed and yard, however a task like this is made easier if a larger selection is available to pick from. "The more you have available, the greater the chance of finding 'just what you need' throughout the build process." So if you have any Club VP Stephen Pears congratulates Michael Evans while Club Pres Andrew steel at home, and want to get rid Walker congratulates Luke White of it, here is your chance. "We will happily take it off your hands." Thank you to all our loyal readers, contributors and advertisers. says Jeff. The Men's Shed is off This is the last edition of Roundabout!
