ALREADY AUGUST!
It’s already August, and peak cold and flu season. The Queensland Government has offered free influenza (flu) vaccinations to all Queensland residents over 6 months of age. Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself and others from serious illness and hospitalisation. Book an appointment online on our website www.alivepharmacy.com.au
In this month’s issue of Live+ we discuss bone health and the benefits of vitamin D, of which there are many. Magnesium aids in the transport of vitamin D throughout the bloodstream. It also supports bone, muscle, and nerve health. When we are sick, magnesium may help fight infection by supporting energy production within our body.
When we catch a cold or flu it is normal to feel fatigued however, depending on severity some low intensity exercise like walking or yoga may prove beneficial. Gentle movement helps boost the immune system and can be an excellent way to get some sunshine and fresh air. It’s encouraged to skip high intensity workouts like sprinting or heavy weights though while your body recovers.
Essential vitamins and minerals contribute to the efficiency of our immune system that helps our body fight illnesses. A healthy immune system relies on a healthy balanced diet, regular exercise, hydration, plenty of sleep, and minimised stress.
On page 14 and 15 we talk about getting ready for the Cairns Amateurs as the event reaches a monumental milestone, its 65th year anniversary. We are excited to attend and see what’s instore for the event.
Remember to check the shelf life of your makeup and cosmetics when getting ready for any occasion. Typically, there is a 6M, 12M, or 24M symbol indicating the number of months a product lasts once opened. Bacteria spreads when exposed to the outside environment and expired products can cause breakouts. Some products our staff are currently loving are the L’Oreal Lips Ranges, Nude By Nature Mineral foundations and powders, and the Rimmel Lip Liners.
Last month we were excited to see everyone’s submissions from our July Colouring Competition and the chosen artists work will be displayed in an upcoming Live+ Issue.
Stay healthy this cold and flu season, and keep an eye out for our next catalogue cover.

WHAT IS VITAMIN D?
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps absorb calcium in our body to support healthy bones. Beyond its skeletal benefits, emerging research also suggests that vitamin D influences our immune system, cardiovascular health, mental well-being, and even our balance and strength.
While sunlight remains the most natural and abundant source of vitamin D, it can be challenging to obtain sufficient levels through sunlight alone and it’s essential we manage exposure to minimise skin cancer risk.
Vitamin D is present in some high fat foods including fatty fish such as salmon and mackerel, fortified dairy, and eggs. At a population level, we aren’t receiving adequate vitamin D levels through sunlight or food as 23% of Australian’s present with a vitamin D deficiency.
The most reliable way to optimise our vitamin D levels is through supplementation. Regular check-ups and blood tests can determine your vitamin D levels, and supplements use can be tailored to your needs.
Bone Health
Aids in the absorption of calcium, promoting bone mineralisation and strength.
Joint Health
Reduces inflammation and supports cartilage health.
Immune Function
Helps regulate the immune system and enhancing immune response, and may reduce the risk of some autoimmune diseases.
Balance and Strength
May help improve muscle function, balance, and strength, particularly in older adults.
Mood Management
May help regulate mood and prevent depressive symptoms.
If you require vitamin D supplementation a common dose is 1,000IU or 25mcg of Vitamin D. There are many brands that provide this amount, including Nature’s Way, Cenovis, and Ostelin. If you are vitamin D deficient, you may need to increase the dose for a short period of time to get your body back to baseline levels. Talk to a healthcare professional about vitamin D testing and supplementation.

Spring Racing GEAR UP FOR
Get ready to embrace the excitement of the Cairns Amateur Carnival’s 65th Year Anniversary as we gear up for Spring Racing. The highly anticipated Fashions on the Field event promises to showcase a stunning array of gorgeous dresses and individual styles. Let’s delve into just what it takes to dress up, suit up, and walk the stage.
STYLE AND ORIGINALITY
Change is expected on the tracks this year and attendees are said to be in for a treat with new venue arrangements and layouts. This is further accentuated by the occasion being marked as the Sapphire Jubilee Carnival, commemorating 65 years. How will this influence the dress code’s style you ask? Well it’s fair to expect an infusion of gold, sparkle and glamour, or perhaps an embrace of classical styles with some original flare.
HEADWEAR
A headpiece is what the races are all about! When selecting headwear, consider your face shape and skin undertone. Oval-shaped faces may opt for wider options, while round faces can go for larger hats. Squareshaped faces can add height with tall fascinators. To avoid washing out your appearance, complement your skin tone. Warm undertones may lean toward autumn colours, neutrals, reds, or deep hues, while cool undertones may prefer bold, icy tones, pinks, or blues.
ATTENTION TO DETAIL
The runway is where the smallest details shine the brightest. Pay close attention to accessories like jewellery, lapel flowers, handbags, handkerchiefs, cufflinks, and shoes. These elements distinguish an outfit from the crowd and can make or break a look. Also consider the art of makeup and how big of a contribution it can make to your ensemble. Think about how your eyeshadow blends or doesn’t, consider how your hair complements your attire. Don’t forget about texture, fabric is key, how it drapes and moves.
GROOMING AND DEPORTMENT
First impressions matter, especially to the judges. Your presentation and behaviour reflect your elegance and virtue, and the way you walk, talk, and carry yourself speaks volumes. Etiquette plays a significant role during Fashions on the Field, so channel your inner grace and elegance by walking tall, smiling, waving, and simply having a good time.
INCORPORATE CURRENT FASHION TRENDS
The fashion trends of 2023 will likely be influenced by the latest runway shows, fashion magazines, social media, and streetwear culture. We’ve noticed some standout trends recently including the resurgence of royal style, channelling the timeless sophistication of Princess Diana or Princess Kate. Another is the fusion and reinvention of styles such as preppy and grunge, and you can’t go past Barbiecore these days. Think pink, and more pink.
CAIRNS AND OUR CLIMATE
Positioned in a tropical oasis the participants are challenged to exhibit aspects of our region. Our home is full of abundant landscapes from rainforests to the Great Barrier Reef. Being situated in a tropical oasis, Fashions on the Field is challenging participants to incorporate elements of our region. From lush rainforests to the Great Barrier Reef, we have an array of spaces to get inspired by, and a rainbow of rich colours to don. Remember to also dress for the climate and opt for breathable fabrics.
Ultimately it comes down to what you like and feel most comfortable in. The event is all about individual style and confidence, so good luck and we will see you there!
BE ALLERGY AWARE
As we approach Spring, we see an increase in prevalence of asthma and allergy symptoms. Identify your triggers and work with your doctor and pharmacist to decide what will work best for you. Depending on your symptoms and sensitivities, a pharmacist will recommend appropriate preventative and symptom management medication.
A steroid nasal spray: persistent to moderate to severe hay fever symptoms. Reduce swelling in the lining of your nose. For example Nasonex or Rhinocort.
Antihistamines: mild to occasional hay fever. Comes in tablet form, liquids, or eye drops.
Saline sprays: clear nasal congestion and remove irritants from airways.
Nasal Decongestant tablets: unblock your nose. For relief of discomfort.
Speak to your pharmacist, always read the label and follow the directions for use.
