WE HAVE NEARLY HIT THE HALFWAY MARK FOR THE YEAR! This is a good time of the year to reflect on our health and the health of our loved ones. Men’s health is not something we pay enough attention to especially considering a majority of men's health threats are largely preventable.

The most common men's health threats include workplace incidents, heart disease, cancer, and unintentional injury. Making healthy lifestyle choices, such as eating a healthy diet, and including physical activity in your daily routine are super important. As you get older, your men's health concerns are likely to change.

So, what can men do to improve their health and still enjoy life? + Don’t avoid going to the doctor or pharmacist if you have a health concern + Eat more natural foods including those high in iron (see pumping iron later in this catalogue) + Moderation is the key with alcohol + Get moving by walking at least 30 minutes a day + Maintain a healthy waist + Break unhealthy habits like drinking fruit juice or soft drink instead of water + Get you prostate and bowels screened regularly + Protect you skin from the sun especially in Queensland – no beauty tips from me, I’ll leave that to the Alive team!! + Manage your stress with professionals if needed Getting active can be achieved in many ways.

STAND BY YOUR MAN We all have men in our lives. Whether it be a brother, father, partner, colleague, friend, the list goes on. At every stage throughout the life course, males have higher death rates than females. More males have accidents, take their own lives, and suffer from lifestyle-related health conditions. Men’s Health Week is on from the 14th to the 20th June. The aim is to heighten awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection, and treatment of disease among men and boys.

WHAT DOES MEN’S HEALTH MEAN? Men’s health is about wellness, not just illness. This approach has been described as strength-based or salutogenic, rather than pathogenic. It is, in other words, that men’s health is not just about malespecific reproductive illnesses such as prostate cancer and erectile dysfunction, nor just about the negative sociology of maleness associated with male suicide, men and relationship breakdown, etc.

A strength-based approach seeks to find out what is health-enhancing in the contexts of men’s lives: their physical, emotional, social, psychological, spiritual, and cultural environments. As such this approach emphasises prevention rather than cure.

Be active in getting medical help if you don't feel well, have a problem that won't go away or notice unusual symptoms.

It's OK to seek help - don't try to do everything on your own or bury problems. Talk to your partner, friends and workmates.

Push hard to get the help you need to manage your life, work, family, and financial needs.

Ladies, be proactive in helping your men and boys get the help they and you need. Use available hotlines, speak with professionals to get the best course of action, and be persistent.

Don't leave it too late to seek help. Fear is not a killer.

Reasons some men always seem to be hot and sweaty 1. Sweating disorder

This is called hyperhidrosis, which causes a person to sweat even if their body doesn’t need cooling down. While this can be inherited genetically, it may signal an underlying issue, for example an infection or heart problem. It may also be caused by an overactive nerve signalling your body to sweat more.

2. Thyroid out of ‘whack’

Your thyroid regulates your metabolism. If it’s overactive, it acts like an overheating machine running in overdrive. If you have higher than normal levels of thyroid hormones, you will have increased energy production, a higher body temperature and therefore, lots of sweat.

3. It’s a fitness side-effect

What can you recommend for hair loss?

Really fit people sweat more, as do people who are working on shaping up.

4. Medication

Common medications such as oral decongestants, erectile dysfunction medications, and even antidepressants can have a side effect of excessive sweating. This does not mean you should stop taking them. It is something to discuss with your doctor if it is a concern.

5. Fever

You could simply be sick if you’re hot, sweaty and flushed. Get out the thermometer to check your temperature.

6. Diabetic? Hypoglycemia

A drop in blood sugar can cause people with diabetes to sweat, and also make them feel light-headed and jittery. Sweat glands go into overdrive as the body tries to handle the situation.

7. Anxiety

Feeling anxious causes an increase in temperature because the heart beats faster, blood pressure rises and faster breathing. A higher temperature equals more sweat.

8. Something more sinsiter

Anxiety, stress and sleep problems can lead to night sweats but in rare cases, it could be something more serious, such as cancers of the kidney or thyroid, lymphoma and leukemia.

If your body thinks it has an infection, it will heat up to fight it off. If unexplained sweats become a regular occurrence, or are accompanied by other symptoms such as weight loss, talk to your doctor.

Men don’t actually sweat more than women.

It has more to do with body size.

There is no cure for male-pattern baldness, but treatments can slow down the process.

Male-pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss and it is usually inherited. It is caused when hair follicles are oversensitive to testosterone. The 2 most effective treatments are medicines called minoxidil and finasteride. Fortunately, Minoxidil is available without a prescription from your doctor. Minoxidil comes as a lotion that can be rubbed into the scalp and can be purchased through your pharmacist over-the-counter. You can also improve the health of your hair follicles by: + Eating a healthy diet + Avoiding shampoos containing harsh chemicals (choose organic shampoos) + Eating more calcium for healthy hair

My partner seems to be acting strangely, what can I do?

Men feel uncomfortable talking about their emotions.

So, if a male is feeling depressed or anxious, they won’t necessarily show it and they may try to hide it. There are signs to look out for: moodiness, change in routine, and acting strangely. You don't have to say anything clever or have all the answers, but you do need to listen. Start with a conversation and ask if they’re doing okay.

Is there anything over-the-counter to help with erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction can have a range of causes, both physical and psychological. It is usually a combination of both. Sometimes there is no clear cause. Many men experience erection problems from time to time. First the underlying health conditions needs to be identified and treated. You will need to consult your doctor. A change of lifestyle such as eating a healthier diet and exercising regularly is generally recommended as well. There are also a number of complementary and alternative medicines available through our pharmacies as well. Don’t be afraid or embarrassed to talk to your pharmacist about any issues you may have. PUMPING IRON We’re not talking about pumping iron at the gym. We’re talking about the iron that should be pumping through your blood. Iron is involved in various bodily functions so is an important mineral. It transports oxygen in the blood and is essential for providing energy for your day-to-day life.

IMPORTANT ROLES OF IRON + Transporting oxygen - Haemoglobin, in red blood cells, makes up about two thirds of the body’s iron. Haemoglobin carries oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body.

+ Haemoglobin is partly made from iron. It makes up about two thirds of the body’s iron. + Myoglobin - Iron is in myoglobin, which is responsible for the red colour of muscles.

Myoglobin helps store oxygen in muscle cells.

+ Enzymes – Enzymes are involved in energy production by acting as a catalyst for many cell functions. Many of your body’s enzymes contain iron.

+ Immunity - Sufficient iron is required for proper functioning of the immune system, which helps us fight infections.

IRON ABSORPTION Boost: Vitamin C, animal protein with plant sources of iron, cooked plant sources of iron.

The body absorbs 6% of iron from raw broccoli compared to 30% of cooked broccoli.

IRON SUPPLEMENTS Your doctor may advise you to take iron supplements if your iron levels are depleted.

Inadequate vitamin A can lead to iron deficiency as it helps to release stored iron. A healthy body absorbs about 18% of available iron from a typical western diet and 10% from a vegetarian diet.

+ Dark coloured poop. Don’t be alarmed by this change to your bowel habits, it’s the most common side effect.

+ Nausea, vomiting, constipation and diarrhoea. It can take the body time to adjust to an

increase in iron. Generally speaking, treatment involves lowering the recommended dose for a short time but seek your doctor’s advice first.

+ Supplements should be taken exactly as advised by your doctor, and ideally on an empty

stomach. If you take more than the recommended dose, you could poison yourself because
