a lifetime of health & beauty

from the publishing team

J

anuary is a time of beginnings, from new diet plans to freshly launched business plans. The holiday season brought us additions to our wardrobes and scores of wedding engagements. In this issue we celebrate the newness of the year in many ways. For all those new brides-to-be, we offer a comprehensive bridal guide (“ALIVE Bride,” p.65) to help every stylish bride in St. Louis. When putting together this annual super-section, we sat down with some of the most talented bridal industry experts in St. Louis, who shared tips, tricks and trends to help make your big day the best day of your life—and a lot of fun for your family and friends. Once you have chosen your venues, caterer, photographer, wedding planner and all the other players on your wedding day team (p.94), turn to p.68 for “25 Big Ideas for Your Big Day” to find out the latest in wedding planning trends and how to pull them off in St. Louis.

Not just for engaged couples, new commitments are for everyone this time of year, especially when it comes to our health. With that in mind, we called upon our fitness, diet and wellness gurus to share info on the latest cardio classes in town that will help you not only get in shape, but have fun doing so. And since being in the right frame of mind is step one, we asked personal trainer Matt Brown from Sweat St. Louis to share his tips on staying resolution-ready all year (p.50). At ALIVE, we also use this time of year to do some self-exploration, to dig deep, to have big discussions of who we are, what our role is in the community and what we want to give to our readers. What emerged are several new editorial pages that we are thrilled to launch in this issue. We have expanded our coverage that supports local charities (Social Scene, p.54), added pages on health and wellness to continue to deliver you more local information and resources and added several interview pages that we hope will inspire and entertain you as much as they do us. Don’t miss the premiere of our new back page ALIVE Q+A, launching this month with arts leader Mary Strauss.

So much so, she would have totally stole some of today’s top ideas had they been around two years ago when she had to plan her own wedding.

By D’Marco Farr

I have done a lot of things in my life. Played pro football. Won a Super Bowl. Done a TV show. And now ESPN radio. But here’s one thing I never thought I’d ever do: work out next to a 68-year-old grandmother. Her name is Sonja Nelson-Stough, and she is in amazing shape. She and I both work out at 20 Minutes to Fitness, a place that provides a medically based form of fitness training that takes just 20 minutes a week. But before you start thinking I have joined some sort of geriatric fitness club, let me add this: In all my years in the NFL,

Okay, I may lift a few pounds more than Sonja and most of the other folks here. But muscle failure is muscle failure. As medical research has proven again and again, achieving it is the first step to toward growing stronger and healthier – no matter what your age or physical condition. The truth is, the 20 Minute to Fitness workout can be fine-tuned for people of any fitness level – from overweight kids, to elite high school athletes, to stay-at-home moms, to timestarved professionals, to 80-year-old grandmas, to former pro athletes like me.

I never had a strength-training regimen as tough, or as effective, as this one. Don’t believe it? You can watch I’ll explain. When I played for the Rams, strength training was a numbers game. We were required to lift a certain amount of weight, a certain number of reps, three times a week. I was spending nine hours a week in a gym, building muscle, but damaging my joints. But at 20 Minutes to Fitness, the medical approach is completely different. Here, I work out on special physical therapy equipment. Everything we do is in ultra slow motion. My personal coach doesn’t really care how many reps I do, or even how much weight I’m lifting. All she is concerned about is that I achieve muscle failure – that I get to the point where I can’t lift another ounce.

a video of me doing the workout at 20minutestofitness.com, or 101espn.com. Sonja’s there, too! You’ll see what I’m talking about. To any of you skeptics out there who say you can’t possibly get fit by working out this way for only 20 minutes a week, I have only three words to say: Just try it.

NFL Super Bowl Champion and Rams’ broadcaster D’Marco Farr shares something in common with Sonja Nelson-Stough, a 68-year-old ballroom dancer from Ballwin.

For more information on 20 Minutes to Fitness, call its studios in Clayton (314-863-7836) or Chesterfield (636-536-1504) or visit www.20minutestofitness.com.

By Sonja Nelson-Stough

So D’Marco Farr never thought he’d be working out alongside a 68-year-old woman. Well, I can do him one better than that: I never thought I’d work out AT ALL – much less next to a Super Bowl champion. You see, for the first 65 years of my life, I hated the gym. Oh, I tried. I would tag along with my husband, Larry, when he went to play squash, intending to work out.

For the past three years, Larry and I have worked out every Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. at 20 Minutes to Fitness’ Chesterfield studio. A half hour later, we’re done for the week. And that’s a good thing. Because in addition to my golf game, I’ve got tap lessons twice a week and ballroom dance competitions to prepare for – not to mention an occasional friendly arm wrestling contest.

But I dreaded it all day long. And I was miserable the entire time. As I started thinking about retirement three years ago, I realized my attitude toward physical fitness was going to have to change. I was on the verge of having osteoporosis, and was getting a little thick around the middle. I could see where I was headed, and that’s NOT how I wanted to spend my retirement years. Then I read an article in a national golf magazine about how 20 Minutes to Fitness had changed the life of another woman who felt like I did. The rest, as they say, is history.

For more information on 20 Minutes to Fitness, call its studios in Clayton (314-863-7836) or Chesterfield (636-536-1504) or visit www.20minutestofitness.com.

I’m absolutely better at all of them, thanks to 20 Minutes to Fitness. My strength, my stamina, my balance and flexibility, my posture and my energy are all better than they’ve been in years. That’s what having strong muscles does for a person. More importantly, I’ve found an exercise regimen that I can stick with. I will do this for the rest of my life.

And by the way, D’Marco, whenever you’re ready for a rematch, just say the word.

Congratulations to Justin Kraudel, Grand Prize Winner of Maryland Plaza’s 2009 Lucky Coin Promotion! From June through October, guests at many of Maryland Plaza’s fabulous stores and restaurants received special coins to toss into the Plaza‘s fountain. The promotion, inspired by the tradition of throwing coins into Rome’s Trevi Fountain, granted wishes every month, including dinner for two at Scape, designer denim from Adriano Goldschmied and a custom-made shirt from Moris Fashions. Grand prize winner Justin Kraudel will be whisked away on a lavish trip for two to Las Vegas’s stunning Bellagio Hotel and Casino. Although the Lucky Coin promotion has ended, patrons can still join the Fountain Club, an ongoing rewards program that provides benefits, discounts and other exciting promotions for diners and shoppers who frequent Maryland Plaza. Visitors are also encouraged to toss real coins into the fountain for good luck; the money collected from the fountain is matched by Maryland Plaza owner Edward “Ted” Koplar, and the funds are donated to the local chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Flying Pi The über-popular pizzeria recently opened a second location in Kirkwood. By Amy de la Hunt | Photo by Carmen Troesser

Tasty Tweets

Looking for the latest gastrobuzz or want to know your favorite restaurant’s daily special? Here's a flutter of food spots that keep patrons up to speed on Twitter.

The Cupcakery, @cravethecup Tweets the week’s flavors plus other news. From November 10: “Drop in this week for my favorite of the weekly specials, the Italian Cream! It might become your new favorite, too.”

Gelateria, @Gelateria Tweets special flavors and what’s in the case every day. From November 16: “Now serving...sweet potato pecan. I am a proud supporter of everything Thanksgiving.”

Urban Studio Café, @urbanstudiocafe Tweets about fun daily discounts. From November 6: “If you’re wearing a tool belt, you’ll receive 15% off today!”

Schlafly, @Schlafly Tweets about seasonal beers and events. From November 11: “Deck the halls! There are bottles of Christmas Ale for sale at Schlafly Bottleworks.”

Joshua Galliano of Monarch, @cookingkid

> When Pi owner Chris Sommers spoke to ALIVE

last summer, he mentioned that he thought the Kirkwood location, then in the works, might alleviate the crowds at the original pizzeria on Delmar. Nope. Though the space is larger, long waits have quickly become the norm for anyone arriving after 4:30pm. But the pizza—and the new milkshake bar—are well worth the wait. Sommers cleverly tweaked each location just enough to make it worth visiting on its own merits. The Loop’s Pi is hip and modern; Kirkwood’s pays homage to classic pizzeria style (think checkered linens). Both serve tasty cocktails, but then there are the dreamily

delicious milkshakes at Kirkwood—from peanut butter cookie dough to classic strawberry made with real strawberries, crafted in house and concepted by dessert guru Mathew Rice (formerly of Niche). Back of the house, Pi has gathered an impressive list of consultants, chefs and managers, among them names that may be familiar to local foodies: Tex-Mex scion Coby Arzola (Agave and Chuy Arzola’s) and sommelier Chad George (Eclipse and Monarch). All that aside, what keeps people talking about Pi is the pizza. In that department, Kirkwood might just trump the others with its classic thin-crust margarita featuring fresh mozzarella, tomatoes and basil (10935 Manchester Rd., Kirkwood, 314.966.8080).

DOGGONE GOOD! Audi-K’s is now open in the CWE. The spot serves over 25 different hotdogs, including a Greek dog with feta cheese and St. Louie with BBQ sauce and pickles. Got a sweet tooth? Try a New Orleans shaved ice snow treat (314.361.0270). DOWNTOWN GETS TWO NEW NIGHTSPOTS Two new clubs debuted Downtown just before we rang in 2010. Fusion, located in the former Club Buca space on The Landing, is a new danceclub and swanky lounge; Shiver opened on Washington Ave. next to the former Copia space. The new spot bills itself as a vodka bar and champagne lounge. So far, St. Louisans are excitedly toasting them both.

ROCK IT Die-hard music fans and wine lovers alike can celebrate the release of a new line of vino from award-winning Mendocino Wine Company, Wines that Rock. Inspired by rock ‘n’ roll greats and created while listening to the respective artists, these new aptly named varietals include Rolling Stones’ Forty Licks Merlot, Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon Cabernet Sauvignon and Woodstock Chardonnay. To purchase a bottle online or check where you can score one in stores, log on to wines-that-rock.com.

26 ALIVE STL January 2010

Tweets about shopping, ingredients and dishes. From November 18: “Seared monchong, saffron braised fennel, tomato confit, kalamatas, sunchoke barigoule, olive-orange vinaigrette.”

Slenderize Your Suds A new brew debuting from Anheuser-Busch this month gives a whole new meaning to light beer. Select 55, a super low-cal beer (55 calories, as its name implies), was created to satisfy the growing demand for a great-tasting beer that is low enough in calories to enjoy beer without the guilt. Select 55 launches in St. Louis in January and nationwide in February.

{ Through the Grapevine } We were sad to see Crepes in the City shutter, but the space at 14th and St. Charles will soon have a new tenant. Look for the opening of Lola, a new spot promising “lofty libations and neighborhood nosh.”

Hot Eats: Brasserie by Niche Chef Gerard Craft has another hit on his hands with Brasserie by Niche in the Central West End. By Cristy Miller | Photo by Jennifer Silverberg

> I remember the first time I met Chef Gerard Craft at a soft opening for Niche in 2005. Gracious and down-to-earth, Craft had put everything he had into a tiny space on the up-and-coming, yet still sleepy corner in Benton Park. With passion and dedication, he started doing what he did best, and it didn’t take long for St. Louis to fall in love with his fresh, simple, farm-to-table American fare. Five years and two new restaurants later, Craft and his team’s local and national accolades are too long to list on one page. No one could have anticipated the overwhelming success of his unassuming bistro, followed by the buzz behind his cocktail and small plates venture, Taste by Niche, last August. And if the popularity and praise of these two hotspots are any indication, I predict that Craft’s newest restaurant, Brasserie by Niche, will soon follow suit. BUZZ-WORTHY BISTRO The opening of Brasserie by Niche in the former Chez Leon space has re-ignited attention on the quieter end of Central West End. The Laclede/Euclid corner has endured constant construction over the last five years and hasn’t quite had the same amount of foot traffic as its bustling northern corner counterparts surrounding the intersection of Maryland and Euclid. The buzz around Brasserie by Niche can be credited to Craft and his collaboration with Chef Perry Hendrix, with whom Craft had worked in Salt Lake City years ago. Hendrix helped develop the bistro menu, which is made up of classic French dishes that use local, seasonal ingredients and a drink selection that gives heavy attention to beer and wine. FRENCH FARE When you have a menu like Brasserie by Niche’s, ordering is difficult—there isn’t one item that doesn’t sound either irresistible or interesting. Bread, warm and light, served from a basket on a center table that allows servers ease of access through the restaurant, begins your experience and is followed by options for starters, salads, a selection of farmstead cheeses and larger plates. The menu, like that of Niche, offers light sides—potato puree, pommes frites and Brussels sprouts—and snacks (amuse bouche), which include bite-sized gougeres (cheese puffs) that are so incredibly light, you could eat a handful without feeling full. A nice bowl of cured olives is also served with fennel and light citrus. 30 ALIVE STL January 2010

Chef Hendrix and Chef Craft at Brasserie by Niche.

If you’ve ever had the scallops at Niche, you will fall head over heels with the seared scallops at Brasserie by Niche—four plump and succulent pieces, slightly caramelized and served with roasted beets. In terms of larger plates, I’m obsessed with the herb gnocchi, soft inside, crisp outside and served with delicious roasted squash, glazed turnips and Brussels sprouts. A friend ordered the croque madame, and I enjoyed several bites of the sweet ham and cheese sandwich with a perfectly cooked egg on top. The trout I ordered on one visit was incredibly fresh and arrived with haricot verts and almonds.

Hot Spot: Ernesto’s Wine Bar Ernesto’s adds wine and beer to Benton Park’s amenities. By Amy De La Hunt | Photo by Jennifer Silverberg

Wine lovers enjoy the warm ambience at Ernesto’s.

> For the unassuming neighborhood that it is, Benton Park has a pretty remarkable dining and nightlife scene. You have everything from high-end (Niche and Sidney Street Café) to mid-range (Frazer’s) to bar-and-grill (Trueman’s Place) to way-out-there (Venice Café). Add “classy” to that eclectic list, because Ernesto’s Wine Bar brings literary sophistication to a quiet corner of McNair. The wine menu I didn’t fully notice the Hemingway theme until well into my first visit. We were more interested in the wine and beer lists, compiled by general manager Brian Hobbs. They’re fairly short but satisfyingly diverse. The wines are listed by grape or style, with one choice for each. Rather than wowing the neighborhood with surprises, Hobbs seems to have chosen a solidly representative wine from the region or country most associated with it: Chardonnay from Washington, Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, Pinot Noir from California, Syrah from France, tawny port from Portugal. Like the wines, the beers are singled out by style and origin. Interestingly, they’re a little more unexpected than the wines; I was intrigued by the Alsatian amber lager and the Japanese white ale. 32 ALIVE STL January 2010

noteworthy noshes There’s more room for adventure in the nightly wine flights. I chose “Italian Classics of 2006,” which netted me 3-ounce pours of the Andrea Felici Verdicchio, Vinchio Vaglio Serra “I Tre Vescovi” Barbera d’Asti and a Majnoni Guicciardini Chianti Riserva (which turns to be an organic wine from a small Italian producer—I liked it so much, I Googled it). The flight was served with olives, dried fruit, cheese and cured meat, making it a bargain at $12. Like the rest of the concise food menu, it was well chosen and worked with several libations. Were Hemingway still around, he’d probably enjoy hanging out in Benton Park. By day, the independent corner coffeeshops proliferate to the point where he could walk around for hours, from one to the next, until it was time to switch to wine. And then he’d probably find a comfy seat at Ernesto’s and stay awhile (2730 McNair Ave., Benton Park, 314.664.4511).

KLUTCH, a new women’s boutique I’ve heard raves about, is where I stop first. This place is wall-to-wall with party-ready dresses, fab accessories and basics like jeans and tees from lines like Meghan Fabulous, L.A.M.B. and Alice+Olivia. Klutch’s co-owner, Anna Strope, tells me that the store has been open just three months and has been doing well. I don’t doubt it for a minute—there isn’t one thing in the store that I wouldn’t want for my own closet.

This month, in honor of the opening of the new and improved I-64, I ventured west to Town & Country. The Resale Rounds

An afternoon speed-shopping STL’s top resale stores results in a multitude of second-hand treasures. By Jill Manoff > Anyone who knows me would not be surprised that I pitched this story. Known to spend a Saturday making the resale rounds, I’ll spend hours in one store, hitting every department (including little boys!) and reviewing the contents of most every hanger. While most tire after one three-hour hunt, I can power on to the next store; rather than continue to torture less-obsessed friends, I now shop alone. So, I really thought I was challenging myself when I set a five-hour limit on my proposed four-store spree. With travel time, that’s only about one hour in each shop. I would have to focus…

Belts, stylist’s own.

2:30pm

Tory Burch pants available at Women’s Closet Exchange ($59). Inge Christopher clutch available at Women’s Closet Exchange ($59).

Stopped at Women’s Closet Exchange (Sappington, 314.842.8405). A longtime favorite of mine, I knew I’d have no trouble scoring something amazing. On one side of the store, there’s a cherry-picked plethora of suits, dresses, shoes and more by boutique-worthy brands. On the other is…my heaven. Chanel suits, gently-used Manolo Blahniks and Alexander McQueen jackets for less than my used-car payment? Yes, please. My final picks included a clutch that reminded me of Rachel Zoe for Judith Leiber and rocker-chic Tory Burch pants that I so would keep for myself if they were in my size.

Jessica McClintock dress available at Designer Resale ($12.99).

1:00pm

Arrived at Designer Resale Boutique (St. Peters, 636.279.3968). As I walked up and saw two stuffed $1.99 garment racks sitting outside, I wondered why I had never been there before. I peeked inside, and rows of coats near the entrance—from fur to leather to long and wool—drew me in. I discovered shoes, chunky jewelry, sweaters and jeans from mall brands like The Limited and Banana Republic and designer handbags in counter cases. I weeded out my fabulous finds and decided to feature a short, sequined Jessica McClintock dress, which, I decided, could skew very Balmain if accessorized just right. I left proud that I did not splurge on a fringed suede jacket (though still thinking about it…), and that two of my four personal purchases were from the $1.99 racks.

Jayna tuxedo jacket available at tag Timeless Authentic Garments ($36).

3:45pm

4:45pm

Stopped to refuel, aka swig a 44 oz. Diet Mountain Dew.

5:00pm

Made my final stop at tag Timeless Authentic Garments (The Loop, 314.721.1370). One of my many haunts, I knew most everything about my final destination, other than the fact that it closes at 8pm. Whew… Though I stopped once to try on the fringed leather hot pants worn by the mannequin in the window, I remained on task for the most part; I briskly sifted through the racks of rompers, maxis, boots, evening bags and more. In the end, I decided on a structured tuxedo jacket, a must-have the season. I think of tag as the many eBay stores I once frequented, all rolled into one always-on-target, easy-to-shop Delmar destination. As I left, I reminded the owner to call me when they get a fur vest in. I gave up on my many attempts to “win” one online; surprisingly, I don’t have the patience for auctions.

Newly opened and just a few feet from its more-sophisticated sister store (Women’s Closet Exchange), I was immediately intrigued by Clique; just as I walked in, I overheard a fellow shopper say that she found an $8 BCBGMaxAzria jacket there just weeks before. While amidst the clothing racks, stocked with Ella Moss, Diesel and Express; outerwear; denim and dresses for all occasions, I found myself torn between a faux fur shrug, an asymmetrical ’80s bangle and two pairs of pumps—one, Bebe; the other, a Stuart Weitzman diffusion line. I went with the Bebe, as they were my size.

Happy Hour The time has come for a fresh way to watch the clock in 2010. By Sheniqua Faulkner

> Perhaps 2009 found you strapped for time, in a rush or always running late. Luckily, the new year allows us to revamp, reinvent and reset. Start with one of these wall clocks, any of which would make a smart addition to any room of the house. Or hang one at the office and never be late to a meeting again. There is a style, color and price to suit any décor or budget—and because wall-mounted clocks are as decorative as they are useful, they’re a home accessory that stands the test of time.

This George Nelson reproduction uses birch plywood, lacquered metal and a botanical muse to create a clock as stunning today as it was when Nelson first crafted it in the 1950s.

A modern take on the classic German cuckoo clock marks the hour without the silly bird noises—keep time and your sanity. Contemporary Wooden Cuckoo, $59, UMA, Downtown, 314.241.9990.

With bold Roman numerals, antiqued patina and a working brass pendulum, this clock— based on the design of a late 19th-century original— transports you to London’s bustling Kensington Station. London Rail Clock, $229-$299, Restoration Hardware, Saint Louis Galleria, Richmond Heights, 314.863.7566.

This timekeeper—reminiscent of the classic, straightforward versions found in our childhood classrooms—uses the radio signal from the National Atomic Clock to automatically set the time. It’s accurate to within one second per year, power outages be damned.

Sleek aluminum minute and hour hands and threedimensional numerals on a carbon-colored face make for a minimalist and masculine timepiece at a can’t-beat price. Raised Number Wall Clock, $39.95, Crate & Barrel, Richmond Heights, 314.725.6380.

Far East Made Easy

If made-from-scratch meals are not your forte, but you refuse to sacrifice flavor and presentation, the Schnucks Cooks experts have you covered this month with a recipe that infuses ramen noodles with the flavors of the Far East for a deliciously simple dish.

Once the staple of college students on a dime, ramen noodles are elevated to gourmet fare with the addition of succulent shrimp and savory Asian flavors. By Sheniqua Faulkner

Log on to com ooks. schnucksc recipes. re for mo

{ Perfect Pairing }

Asian Shrimp Noodle Bowl (Serves 4) WHAT YOU NEED: • 2 packages (3 ounces each) ramen noodles (any

flavor) • 1 tbsp. Schnucks vegetable oil • 1 lb. raw, peeled and deveined 36-40 count shrimp,

thawed if necessary • 1 tbsp. drained roasted garlic • 1 package (1 lb.) frozen broccoli stir-fry vegetables

(with carrots, onions and red peppers) • 1/2 cup less sodium teriyaki marinade and sauce • 2 tbsp. Szechuan stir-fry and marinade sauce (or less

for milder heat) • 1 tsp. Asian sesame oil • 1/2 cup Schnucks dry roasted peanuts (optional)

46 ALIVE STL January 2010

WHAT TO DO:

1. P repare noodles as label directs, but do not add seasoning packet; drain noodles well.

2. M eanwhile, in a 12-inch skillet or wok, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat until very hot but not smoking. Add shrimp and cook 2 to 3 minutes or just until shrimp turn opaque throughout, stirring constantly. Transfer shrimp to medium bowl.

3. I n same skillet, add roasted garlic; cook 30 seconds, stirring. Add frozen vegetables and sauces; cook 4 to 5 minutes or until vegetables are heated through. Stir in sesame oil, shrimp with any juices in bowl and drained noodles; heat through. Serve shrimp mixture in bowl; sprinkle with peanuts if desired.

The bold flavors in Asian fare are best complemented by light libations. Our pick to pair with Schnucks recipe this month is MGD 64. Its uncomplicated taste allows the heat and saltiness from this dish to have prime real estate on your palette. Inside the bottle: 64 measly calories, only 2.4 grams of carbs and a crisp, clean finish. We appreciate that MGD 64’s low-cal status gives us the license to enjoy what’s on our dinner plates instead of worrying about what we’re sipping. Indulgence without the guilty conscience? Finally, a New Year’s resolution we can actually keep.

Get Resolution Ready Stick to your resolutions this year by changing the way you think. By Cristy Miller

> Learn a new language, quit smoking, lose twenty pounds; let’s face it—the act of setting New Year’s resolutions is much easier than sticking to them. Despite good intentions, over half of resolution-setting Americans have lost their resolve or abandoned their goals completely by June. According to Matt Brown, personal trainer and co-owner of Sweat St. Louis, achieving your goals starts with a simple idea—change your mindset. Here, he shares simple strategies for shedding pounds and setting realistic resolutions in 2010. CHANGE YOUR MINDSET “Starting with the right mindset is the best way to keep your resolutions, says Brown. “We [Sweat coowners Jose Ponce and Jamie Mushlin] believe that an optimistic way of thinking and being has unlimited value.” Practicing what they preach, the Sweat owners developed this positive-thinking approach into The Ways of Being Programs. Designed to help develop your ability to choose how you view and react to everyday situations, the program is a nine-month course, 50 ALIVE STL January 2010

divided into three phases, and encourages you to focus on creating a mindset each day—grateful, helpful, confident, creative—which, in turn, creates results. RE-TRAIN YOUR BRAIN “Most people focus on what they do, not who they are,” says Brown. “When you focus your energy on who you are each day, you make better choices, keep your promises and stay on track.” To help clients maintain their new mindset, Brown also created The Mindset Email, a free daily email that sends a mindset tip for the day, which helps sharpen your ability to practice optimistic thinking. Launched about six months ago, the email program already has over 600 subscribers all over the U.S. and has become a powerful tool for those looking to rethink how they live every day. It’s a simple strategy to keep you on track, whether you want to lose weight or learn something new—your actions become aligned with your intentions, and you can accomplish almost anything. For more info on Sweat’s Ways of Being Programs, log on to waysofbeing.com or themindsetemail.com or call Sweat, 314.725.2714.

{ Fit Tips } Sweat St. Louis’ team shares its secrets for weightloss success. Opt To Eat Better Eat breakfast and have smaller meals throughout the day. Taking a vitamin supplement is also important. Go H20 Drink plenty of water throughout the day—at least 64 ounces is recommended. Break A Sweat Cardio, cardio, cardio. It’s a must for any weight-loss routine. Get Physical Never underestimate the results of resistance training— it’s a calorie burner, too.

Get Involved: Animal House Fund A private organization and its dedicated volunteers raise funds to build a new facility that will house animals while preserving the environment. By Sheniqua Faulkner | Photo by Carmen Troesser

Kate & Tyler When Kate Ewing was volunteering at the St. Louis City Animal Care & Control Facility, she spotted a kitten that immediately stood out from the rest. “He was bright orange, was missing most of his tail and only had two toes on his front paw,” she says. Ewing debated adopting the kitten, but with two rescued cats at home, she wasn’t sure. “I kept telling myself, ‘If he’s still there next week, then I’ll take him home,’” says Ewing. After three weeks, the kitten was still without an adopted family. Ewing decided that the bright orange kitten was meant to be hers. “Tyler has been a great addition,” Ewing says. “He definitely serves as a reminder of the importance of adopting shelter pets.”

> In 2005, Kate Ewing was searching for a local organization where she could volunteer her time and express her compassion for animals. The marketing coordinator at Sigma-Aldrich chose Animal House Fund, a nonprofit organization that is working to build a state-of-the-art, environmentally responsible municipal animal care center in St. Louis. Last year, Ewing took a position on the organization’s Board of Directors, a role that has her planning events, recruiting volunteers and raising funds for the final project. The project, led by chairman Ed Throop, has garnered the support of many public officials, and the group plans to break ground on the new facility in 2010.

52 ALIVE STL January 2010

The Cause: St. Louis’ current

animal shelter at Gasconade and Highway 55 was built in 1941 and was intended for short-term use—to catch, receive and dispose of unwanted animals. Animal House Fund was created to raise money and materials for a new shelter, which will be built in a corner of Arsenal-Ellendale Park. In a unique public-private partnership, Animal House Fund will hand over the facility to the City of St. Louis upon the shelter’s completion.

Local Impact: The building, which has been designed by internationally renowned architecture firm, HOK, has applied for LEED certification. The project will be more than a new

facility for St. Louis animals; it will beautify a previously unused portion of the park by adding walking trails, planting flowering trees, building an expanded playground and resurfacing parking lots. The project, which is estimated to cost $4 million, is projected to house up to 4,000 animals annually. “The new facility will help to put St. Louis on the map when it comes to animal welfare,” says Ewing. “The new shelter will lead to happier, healthier lives for our city’s pets and citizens by placing a greater emphasis on adoption, humane education and how to best take care of pets.”

Animal Care and Control facility where volunteers help walk dogs and play with cats. Those looking to help the organization with fundraising can join Animal House Fund’s young professionals group, which plans special fundraising events including happy hours, shopping parties and trivia nights (join the organization for their next trivia night on January 9). “Volunteers can have as little or as much involvement that works with their schedules and interests,” says Ewing. “It’s a great opportunity to have fun, meet new people and discover new things to do in the city.”

Think outside the cake box.

Today’s brides can have their cake and eat it, too, thanks to the countless creative dessert options available to satisfy their sweet tooth. Think Oreo cookies, donuts, mini pies (shown, from Pastry Chef Katherine Benson for Steven Becker Fine Dining) and cotton candy as part of a fun dessert bar, or a gourmet sundae station with all the yummy toppings. Talk to Steven Becker Fine Dining (Midtown, 314.367.4848) or Bittersweet Bakery (Benton Park, 314.771.3500).

Rethink the traditional tux.

Trade the traditional penguin suit for something more fitting of your groom’s personal sense of style like a custom-made suit in gray, tan or pinstripe—a sleek, fashion-forward look that’s been popping up all over the bridal runways this year. Try Savile Row Custom Clothiers (Ladue, 314.567.8500).

Break the head table tradition.

Traditional head-table arrangements are being replaced with more intimate setups that put the focus of the reception back where it belongs—on the bride and groom. Consider family-style seating (where you and your bridal party can face one another) or a sweetheart table (a table just for the bride and groom) for a cozier dining experience. Talk to Bride’s Vision (Kirkwood, 314.580.2381), St. Louis wedding planners that take care of all the details for you, whether it’s the head table arrangement, menu consultation or ceremony design.

Pamper your party.

To tame the Bridezilla in us all, consider a spa getaway with the girls so you could relax, unwind and keep everyone’s general sanity. For optimal results, choose calming therapies like herbal body exfoliation (helps reduce anxiety), aromatherapy message (lavender calms stress) and thermal body wraps (to lose water weight). For the ultimate staycation, head to Spa Shiki (Lodge at the Four Seasons, Lake of the Ozarks, 800.843.5253) and get away with the gals without having to log a lot of miles.

Recently Ringed Three St Louis couples looking forward to tying the knot.

The Couple: Sarah Thompson, 31, and Boyd Pickup, 34 How They Met: The couple met through work (he’s the Creative Services Manager at HEC-TV; she runs her own PR business and freelance produces for HEC-TV and STL TV). Sarah started working at HEC-TV as a segment producer for the Emmy Award-winning program “State of the Arts.” Boyd began editing her scripts and the rest is history. The Proposal: After a crazy day at work for Sarah, Boyd came over. Even though she wasn’t in the best mood, Boyd suggested they take a walk and go out to dinner. The couple took a stroll through Forest Park, and when they reached a beautiful Victorian-era footbridge, he got down on one knee and proposed. The Big Day: Summer 2010.

The Couple: Marcie Epstein, 25, and David Siteman Garland, 25

The Couple: Katie Shortal, 27, and Thor Dowd, 28

How They Met: David says it was definitely fate that they met. The now newly engaged couple had mutual friends and eventually Marcie (a Physician at Barnes-Jewish Hospital) invited David (Entrepreneur/TV Host/Speaker/Consultant) to a happy hour—David couldn’t make it, but decided to ask Marcie on a date instead.

How They Met: The couple met during high school and remained friends throughout college out of state. When Katie moved back to St. Louis in 2006, she invited Thor to The Muny, but instead of seeing the show, they ended up playing cards all night because of the horrific thunderstorm that summer that left much of St. Louis without power for days.

The Proposal: David went all out for the proposal. He had 50 dozen roses, 5,000 rose petals, champagne, a chocolate fountain, strawberries and candles set up at his house while they were at a Blues game in November. When they returned later that night, he popped the question. The Big Day: March 5, 2011 in St. Louis.

86 ALIVE STL January 2010

The Proposal: Thor wanted to surprise Katie (a teacher at Berkeley Middle School), so he proposed on a rainy night in their apartment in Richmond Heights. Then the couple went to Sasha’s Wine Bar to celebrate with friends and family. The Big Day: July 17, 2010 in Glen Arbor, MI at The Homestead Resort.

A Formal Affair St. Louis couple Mareka Barrett and Adam Jones planned a traditional big day that included their love of jazz and gospel music. By Kristin Stefek Brashares | Photos by Lance Omar Thurman The Theme: The wedding theme—a throwback

to the Harlem Renaissance—lent to an extremely formal affair. Cosmopolitan Events (cosmopolitanevents.com), coordinated the day of the memorable wedding, that featured jazz and gospel music and sharply dressed guests. Mareka (36, Event Planner for Barnes-Jewish Hospital) and Adam (35, Options Trader for Wells Fargo) exchanged vows at the University of Missouri- St. Louis’ Provincial House Chapel.

“We wanted to go back to the old-school way of getting married.”

The Party: Jazz music during a cocktail hour at St. Louis University’s

Wool Ballroom continued the theme of the day, and then family friend DJ Needles switched things up a bit with dance music that got everyone up and moving after a dinner buffet by the school’s caterer, Chartwells.

The Decor: Satin champagne-colored chair covers from All Seasons

Linen (314.983.0090, allseasonslinen.com), chocolate runners and homemade crystal-tree centerpieces decorated the dinner tables. Fancy pens and a spiral-bound book filled with blank, black pages invited guests to sign special congratulations.

The Favors: Gold boxes with chocolate-covered cookies decorated

with the words “thank you” served as sweet take-home treats.

A St. Louis Celebration Katie Armstrong and Brian Mailey’s dream wedding included a St. Louis-centric day that would show out-of-town guests their favorite gems of the city. By Kristin Stefek Brashares | Photos by Liz Reiff Sloan The Ceremony: The couple exchanged mid-morning vows at The Old Cathedral (Basilica of St. Louis). Immediately after, a specially reserved tram at the nearby Arch gave guests the chance to catch a spectacular view of The Lou. The Celebration: A four-hour afternoon

cocktail party at the Four Seasons’ eightfloor outdoor terrace (fourseasons.com/ stlouis) featured live music by a lead female singer and five-piece band Arvell and Company (314.721.9090, arvellandcompany. com), butlered cold and hot hors d’oeuvres and tapas and carving stations. Fresh off dance lessons, Katie (30, Law Student, Law Clerk, Orange County District Attorney’s Office, and Registered Nurse at a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) and Brian (31, Chief General Surgery Resident at University of California at Irvine) performed a choreographed jazz/swing dance to “Bei Mir Bis Du Schoen.”

The Outing: In the early evening, almost all of the 150 guests

departed on a trolley tour of St. Louis—organized by the bride and groom, a native St. Louisan, to show off the gems of the city—with stops at Forest Park, Café Eau, Busch Stadium, Broadway Oyster Bar and the final destination, Laclede’s Landing.

Dynamic Duo The ladies behind Lucky You Productions are shaking up the St. Louis social event scene through their combined, ultra-creative forces. By Kristin Stefek Brashares | Photo by Brian Fagnani

> If you’ve attended Saint Louis Fashion Week, Wall Ball or even a green STL wedding, then you’ve seen the Lucky You Productions' women at work. Rachel McCalla and Amanda Hill have been shaking up the St. Louis social and bridal scenes with their dare-to-be different approach to event planning and a growing client list that includes the Missouri Botanical Garden, EarthWays Center and PrideFest. The prolific party-planning pair prides themselves on bringing fresh ideas to the table, and their inventiveness is getting big results. they can to incorporate some sort of sustainable aspect to their projects. At the very least, they should offset their energy with wind energy. This is very easy to do and inexpensive. As for weddings, we plan green weddings that reflect the client’s personality. It doesn’t have to be moss and hemp and burlap. Sustainability is really important to me, and for my own wedding, I went out of my way to do as much as I could. I had a Southern shrimp boil with brown paper on the tables, we bought local flowers and then personally donated them the next day to a retirement community. We had the wedding at the Missouri Botanical Garden’s EarthWays Center, where guests could learn how to make their homes more sustainable.

Amanda Hill & Rachel McCalla photographed at Simply Elegant Bridal

ALIVE: You guys are behind the planning of some of St. Louis’ most established events. In what ways are you different from other event planners? Rachel Mccalla: There are planners out there that do the standard gala, where guests come and drink, sit down, eat, someone makes a speech, a band plays, and people say they’re bored. Why do that over and over again if you can do something different? I had a gala for a nonprofit where I did a chocolate theme. Instead of a main dessert, we had a huge chocolate fountain and got desserts donated and centerpieces made out of chocolate. They [organizers and guests] really embraced it. If you bring a little originality to an event, it sets it apart. Amanda and I always look for something different to do. ALIVE: When did you know you had a knack for event planning? RM: I got my start by managing my college’s (University of Missouri-St. Louis) literary series. Then, I was hired by Brandt’s Market and Café to do Spoken Word Sundays. I would book talents and promote and run the readings. I got good 94 ALIVE STL January 2010

numbers—sometimes 75 to 100 every Sunday. It was easy for me to promote, and it was something I was passionate about. Amanda Hill: I was trying to find a nonprofit job after college (in St. Louis), and I moved to LA and worked for a special event company. I shadowed for nonprofit fundraisers and eventually started taking on large-scale events. One of the first events was for Alzheimer’s, and I have a personal connection to that, so I wanted to make it as good as I could. It was a celebrity musical, and there were 3,000 people in attendance. It was so much fun. By the time the event happened, it was so rewarding to see the outcome. I was hooked at that point. ALIVE: Rachel, you’ve strongly advocated for environmentally friendly practices from the onset of Lucky You, and as a result, the company has become to the go-to place for planning green weddings and events. What has made you so passionate about going green, even making your own recent wedding eco-friendly? RM: As an environmentalist, I feel event professionals should do what

ALIVE: If you had the creative freedom, what kind of unique touches would be a dream to do for a wedding? RM: I really want to see a DIY doughnut station. At the end of the night, guests could decorate their own doughnuts, and you could serve milk to go along with it. If I suggest that to a bride, I’d probably hook one. AH: I’d like to construct a wall for the reception, and hang old pictures of the couple’s parents and grandparents on their wedding days. In the middle, I would cut out a hole and frame it, so people could get their pictures taken behind it. That way, they are a part of the family history. I’d also like to do breakfast for dinner. You could have a Pop-Tart buffet station with toasters and mimosas. It would be classy, fun and youthful. RM: A Pop-Tart buffet sounds awesome. You could put toppings on them. I personally had a gourmet snow cone machine at my wedding. ALIVE: You certainly log lots of hours together. How have the two of you worked well as a team? AH: Our personalities can be very similar. We work together a lot, so

being able to get along with each other is key. Thankfully, we love each other. RM: I think I’m more high-strung than Amanda. She takes me down a bit and says, “You need to take a breath,” and I think that’s good. I’ll be honest; I looked around quite a bit in hiring someone, and Amanda was the strongest applicant for the job. She definitely “gets” events. For more information on Lucky You Productions, visit luckyyoustl.com or call 314.210.7764.

3 Wedding Day Do’s from Rachel McCalla 1. Establish a budget, timeline and rough guest list. This is the foundation for every wedding. Take a deep breath and begin to work on a budget. From there, setting a realistic timeline will help you outline what needs to be done and when. 2. Keep it simple. Often in planning, brides look at magazines and see many amazing weddings and breathtaking examples. Although beautiful, what you see may be unrealistic for your timeframe and budget. After drafting a budget, sit down with your fiancé and brainstorm about how you see your wedding—literally. When you close your eyes, how does your wedding really look? Then stay true to your vision. 3. Hire a day-of coordinator. Not everyone can hire a wedding planner, and in some cases, the bride and her family want to plan the wedding. So when it comes to the big day, do you really want to be the go-to person answering questions and keeping everyone on time and in line? No way! Hundreds of hungry attendees including Sarah Kramer, Jeff Small, Heather Chickey and Jassen Johnson had the opportunity to sample each chef’s mini-burger creation as well as sip complimentary drinks from Sam Adams, Pearl Vodka, Amalgamated Brewing and FIJI Water.

After a beautiful afternoon of sampling, savoring and enjoying live music from Fresh Heir and DJ Mahf, it was time to announce the results. Once panel judges Debra Bass, Scott Drake, Carissa Sweigart, Cristy Miller and Jerad Gardner conferred and the crowd votes were tabulated, Chef Eric Kelly was named St. Louis’ Top Chef. His fresh take on the classic cheeseburger was created with perfectly seasoned beef topped with homemade pickles and Tillamook cheddar, all served piping hot on a homemade English muffin.
