It is more interesting, though -- and just as correct -- to call such a group a dazzle of zebras or a zeal of zebras. • If you’re planning a trip to India, keep in mind that in that country, it’s considered rude to whistle in public. • One day in 1994, Duff McKagan, the original bass guitar player for hard rock band Guns N’ Roses, was bored. With little else to do, he decided to take a look at the band’s financials -- and realized he couldn’t make sense of the info. Frustrated, McKagan enrolled in a basic finance course at a community college. One thing led to another, and he ended up at Seattle University’s Albers School of Business. Now, the rock star is becoming a money manager, founding wealthmanagement firm Meridian Rock to help other musicians in the same boat. • If you saw two ships run into each other, you’d likely call it a collision -- and you’d be correct if both boats were moving at the time. Technically speaking, though, if one of the boats is stationary, it’s known as an allision.

Foxy Grandpa

Q:

I have a bisque figure of “Foxy Grandpa,” which has been in my family for more than a century. What can you tell me about this character? — Betty, Santa Fe, New Mexico “Foxy Grandpa” was created by cartoonist C.E. Schultze. It was introduced in the New York Herald in 1900 and was an instant hit. The strip moved to the New York American in 1902 and eventually to the New York Press, where it remained until 1918. The cartoons triggered many products, including games, postcards, song sheets and bisque figurines. It even inspired a Broadway musical. Your figurine probably was issued in 1905 and is valued in the $50 to $200 range, depending on condition. *** I have a biscuit jar that an appraiser identified as overshot glass. What is overshot glass? — Mary, Illinois Overshot glass was developed during the 19th century. Pieces generally appear to be frosted or iced, an effect made possible when a gather of molten glass is rolled over a marver covered with crushed glass. Early pieces that I’ve seen are clear, but examples in color also were made. A search on eBay found many overshot glass items, but no biscuit jars. For example, a number of overshot glass pitchers were listed in the $40 to $100

Her thimbles include ones issued during the Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, Eisenhower and Nixon campaigns. Are they valuable? — Jon, Ohio After the 19th Amendment expanded women’s suffrage throughout the country, thimbles emerged as campaign tools directed toward the new voting constituents. Most of the political thimbles I’ve seen in shops sell in the $10 to $25 range. *** I have some 33-rpm LPs of Dean Martin, Perry Como, Al Hirt and others from this era. Where can I sell them? — Jeane, New Mexico Most LPs — such as the ones you mentioned — sell for about a dollar each, sometimes less, sometimes more, depending on rarity and condition. Volume 12, Week 27

August 10-16, 2017

Another Purpose By Tresa Erickson

Got a nice entryway, but not sure what to do with it? Set up a small table by the door where everyone can drop their keys and mail and that’s about it? Make the most of your entryway by turning it into a usable space. Although typically small, entryways make wonderful spaces for a variety of activities from reading to listening to music. In order to determine what would make the best use of your entryway, you need to think about your needs. Could you and your family use a place to read? Could you use a place to work on the laptop? Could you use a place to display collectibles? Along with your needs, you must consider the dimensions and layout of the space. You may need a place to read, but if there is no room for a comfy chair or love seat, that idea may not work. The entryway may be more suitable for the display of collectibles, especially if it has a lot of wall space. Imagine having your spouse’s entire collection of antique fishing lures hanging in the entryway. What an impressive welcome that would make to visitors. You also need to consider the traffic your entryway receives.

If people are forever coming in and out of your front door, you may not want to turn it into a cozy reading or computer nook. How in the world would you ever get anything done? A buffet area for party nights or a mini game room with a drop-leaf card table, on the other hand, might be more suitable. Whatever purpose you decide to have your entryway serve, make sure you decorate it accordingly. If it’s going to be a music room, tuck the piano under the stairs and provide some chairs for listening. Add a light above the piano and a basket for sheet music. Hang up some inspiring prints, and voila, your music room entryway is complete. If your entryway flows into another room, you may want to go with a complementary color scheme to keep the décor consistent. If it does not, feel free to use whatever color scheme you want to enhance the function of the room and invoke the appropriate mood. Don’t forget in all of the rearranging that your entryway still serves as an entrance to your home. Make sure guests feel welcome and have a mat to wipe their feet on. Make sure family members have a place to stash their coats, keys and mail. Don’t make the décor so luxurious that everyone starts coming in the back door instead. The larger your entryway, the more likely it can serve more than one purpose. Put on your thinking cap and take advantage of all of that space.

Tracking Osteoporosis Through Testing test, N-telopeptide of collagen (abbreviated NTX), which looks at net bone loss. DEXA correlates well to fracture risk, but it changes very slowly. In fact, it changes so slowly that a repeat test within two years usually reflects variability in the test itself rather than an actual change in the bone, DEAR DR. There are at least two ways to measure the optimum duration of treatment for osteoporosis changes in bones, whether as an age-related drop isn’t clear, five years is commonly used (as it sounds in bone density and strength or as an increase in like is the case for A.B.). NTX can guide whether restarting treatment is response to treatment. One way is to measure the bone density via an X-ray (DEXA). The other is a urine necessary. It is currently used only for underarms -- not hands, feet or face, the other most common places for localized hyperhidrosis. According to several published papers, the microwaves heat up the water in the sweat glands, destroying them, while the skin itself is cooled. The published success rates (at reducing sweating to “never noticeable” or “tolerable”) are very high, as are patient satisfaction results. Side effects included swelling, redness and temporary numbness. This is a new procedure, but it appears to have promise in the treatment of excess sweating. Details, Details By Craig W. Armstrong

It’s a great feeling, you walk outside and there it is, a clean car. Many people take great pride in their vehicles and keep them as clean and shiny as the day they drove them off the lot. If you are like this, you probably wash or have your car washed regularly. You keep the inside free of fast food bags and coffee cups and you even try to keep your floor mats clean. But for some folks, that’s not enough. For some people, they want a spotless exterior and interior. For these people, detailing their car is the only way to go. So what is detailing? Basically, detailing your car means to “detail” all aspects of

cleaning your car. This means giving the best care to the paint job, as well as the upholstery. True detailers understand what it takes to keep these surfaces clean and in some cases, how to restore them. Think of it as a super cleaning of your car. So how do you find a good detailer? Like finding a good plumber or barber, the best way is by word of mouth. Talk to friends and friends of friends and find out who they have used and who did a good job. Another great resource is our friend, the Internet. You should be able to find several detailers in your area and reviews on their work. A true professional detailer will have a website with examples of their work. Once you narrow down your search, pay your finalist a visit. Common sense comes into play here. Do they have a professional looking shop? Are they, themselves, professional in how they approach obtaining your business? Their website may have examples of their work, but do they also have a portfolio of photos you can review? Most importantly do they have a business license and insurance? You have the right to verify this. Once you are comfortable with their skill and professionalism, it’s time to talk specifics. Are they familiar with your type of vehicle? Have they detailed the same make and model before? If so, are there before and after photos? Find out if there are options for the interior finish. By this I mean, can you choose between a matte, satin or gloss finish? It’s these kinds of details (no pun intended) that you want to work out before the work begins. Next, talk price. A good detailing

isn’t cheap and good work shouldn’t be. The old adage of “you get what you pay for” applies here. Never expect a detailer to give you the price over the phone. A good detailer would want to see your car before giving you a quote. Now it’s up to you. Does a clean car make you happy? Would a detailed car make you even happier? The decision is yours, just follow these suggestions and use common sense when choosing a detailer.
