• It was 18th-century American novelist and poet Herman Melville who made the following sage by Samantha Weaver observation: “Of all the preposterous assumptions of humanity over humanity, nothing exceeds most of the criticisms made on the habits of the poor by the well-housed, well-warmed, and well-fed.” • Those who study such things say that the three subjects that spark the most arguments in a marriage are money, children and driving. Of course, any couple that has had to figure out a teenager’s auto insurance costs already knows that. • Dogs can be xenophobic, too -- those are the pups that are afraid of strangers. • You’ve heard of standing desks, right? These work surfaces -- which are designed to allow people to stand rather than sit while accomplishing their tasks -- have become quite popular in recent years. Standing desks are not a new invention, however; they reportedly were used by such notable historical figures as Benjamin Franklin, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, Virginia Woolf, Oliver Wendell Holmes and Winston Churchill. • According to scientists, time can be measured more accurately than length. • If you’re sick of naysayers, you might want to try becoming a yeasayer for a day. Yep, that’s a word -- it refers to a person with a confident and positive outlook. (Note: It also can mean a yes-man -- someone who agrees uncritically with others -- but let’s be confident and go with the positive definition.)

Greek Tomato Salad Are you picking tomatoes and cucumbers by the bucket? Do you love the taste of feta cheese? Then you have the makings for this great quick and easy salad.

New GI Bill Boosts Benefits A new GI Bill has been in the works, and now it’s here. Dubbed the Forever GI Bill, it corrects many of the problems and inadequacies of previous veteran education-benefits legislation. In an amazing show of cooperation, both the House and Senate pushed through the final bill in only a few weeks. There was snarling along the way, but they got it done. The biggest change? There will no longer be a 15-year limit on using educational benefits. Veterans who have been out for years and realize they need more education to progress in their careers will now be able to do it. Here are some other changes: • The Yellow Ribbon Program, which provides benefits to surviving spouses and dependents of service members

1. In a medium bowl, combine mayonnaise and ketchup. Stir in cucumber, onion, feta cheese, olives and basil. Add tomatoes. Mix well to combine. 2. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving. Makes 4 (1 cup) servings. * Each serving equals: 91 calories, 3gm fat, 3gm protein, 13gm carbs, 389mg sodium, 68mg calcium, 3gm fiber; Diabetic Exchanges: 2 Vegetables, 1/2 Carb; Carb Choices: 1.

who died in the line of duty, are expanded. • Veterans who were partway through their education when their school abruptly closed will be able to have benefits restored for any credits that don’t transfer. • Reservists and Purple Heart recipients will now get their benefits. • Veterans who seek degrees in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) will get more benefits, either a lump sum or nine extra months of benefits. • Schools will be required to train those who help enroll veterans, and to provide more campus vocation and educational counseling. One potential glitch: To pay for all this, living stipends will be decreased so they’re equal to active-duty service members’ housing allowances. None of this happens today. Some changes will be effective Jan. 1, 2018, and some next August. Some might not happen for a few years. But it’s there; it’s in writing. If you hear the legislation title The Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2017 and wonder

who Colmery is, he was the commander of the American Legion who originally wrote (by hand) the GI Bill ... back in 1944. You have him to thank. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

• Superior is so large that all of the other four Great Lakes, plus three more the size of Lake Erie, would fit inside. It contains enough water to submerge all of North and South America in a foot (30.5 cm) of water. Lake Superior alone accounts for 10% of the world’s fresh surface water. An estimated 100 million trout live in Lake Superior. • A large island 45 miles (72 km) long and 9 miles (14 km) wide sits in the middle of Lake Superior. The island, Isle Royale, has several smaller lakes, making them, in essence, lakes on a lake. Isle Royale, along with 450 smaller islands, make up Isle Royale National Park. • The Wyandot Indians, or Hurons, who lived on its shores, lent their name to Lake Huron. Huron, the second-largest Great Lake and the fifth largest lake in the world, has the longest shoreline of any of the Great Lakes, 3,827 miles (6,157 km), which includes its many islands. Huron was the first of the Great Lakes to be discovered by European explorers, French explorers Samuel de Champlain and Etienne Brule, who travelled up the Ottawa and Mattawa rivers in 1615. They called it “La Mer Douce,” meaning the “sweet/ fresh-water sea.” • The Ojibwa Indians originally named Lake Michigan “mishigami,” meaning ‘large lake.” The third largest Great Lake, Michigan is the only one located entirely within the United States. • Marathon swimmer Jim Dreyer started his swimming career with a 65-mile (105-km) swim across Lake Michigan in 1998. In 2003, he swam the length of 422 miles (679 km). • All of the Great Lakes have had a good amount of shipwrecks. On a frigid December day in 1854, the steamer Westmoreland, loaded with winter provisions for the troops on Mackinac Island, sprung a leak while in the middle of Lake Michigan. Within a short time, the boiler had flooded, the fire went out, and the ship lost its power. With the added weight of a thick coating of ice from the lake’s waves, the ship sank shortly afterward. Half of its 34 crew and passengers perished, with the other half making their way to safety aboard life boats on the rolling waves. It was rumored that the steamer contained $10,000 in gold coins, along with 280 barrels of whiskey. In 2010, over 155 years after the accident, the ship was discovered upright on the bottom, 200 feet (61 m) below the surface in a bay. To date, no discovery of gold has been reported. • Another Lake Michigan disaster occurred in 1860, when a steamer carrying 600 people collided with a boat carrying timber to Chicago. The death toll of this collision was 450. • More than 1,000 shipwrecks have been recorded in Lake Huron, with many still at the lake’s bottom. A particularly severe storm in 1913 produced wind gusts of 90 mph (145 kph), and waves exceeding 35 feet (11 m). This 16hour storm sank 10 ships, and killed 235 sailors.

Painted Wallpaper By Tresa Erickson

You love the look of wallpaper, but you hate the time and mess involved in putting it up and the damage it can incur. In your household, wallpaper doesn’t hold up nearly as well as paint does. Did you know that you can create the look of wallpaper with paint? Unless you are an artist and avid painter, you probably won’t be able to create intricate designs. That mural of an 18th-century Italian villa and the surrounding landscape is probably out of reach. That polka dot print, however, may be right up your alley. Think about the pattern you would like to create. Perhaps you would like polka dots, or maybe you would like leaves or circles, triangles and squares. As long as the pattern is fairly simple, you can recreate it on the walls using simple shapes and objects you can find around the house. If you want polka dots or circles, triangles and squares, make some from light cardboard. If you want leaves, go outside and find some. Once you have the objects in hand, paint the walls in the color you would like the objects be. If you want white polka dots, then paint the walls white. If you want brown leaves, then paint the walls brown. While the base coat is drying, determine the arrangement of objects in

your pattern and attach them to the walls using spray adhesive. Perhaps you want the polka dots spaced out every five inches. Perhaps you want a more random placement. Next, you need to select a topcoat. This can be paint or glaze. For a solid effect, roll paint onto the walls over the objects. For a mottled effect, sponge watered-down paint or glaze onto the walls over the objects. Let the walls dry and then remove the objects, revealing the shapes underneath. For further definition and depth, add some more paint to the shapes. Creating painted wallpaper takes some work, but for those who don’t like the real thing, it is worth it. Just think. When your toddler leaves a sticky print on the wall, you won’t have to worry about it. You can just wipe it off with a damp cloth.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Healthy Diet Possible While Avoiding Oxalate DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had several kidney stones and was advised to avoid oxalate. I was told that green, leafy vegetables and grains are high in oxalate. How can my diet be healthy if

I avoid these healthy foods? -- D.F. ANSWER: Calcium oxalate is the most common type of kidney stone, so limiting dietary oxalate makes sense. However, increasing water intake, dietary calcium and potassium can help prevent kidney stones. It is paradoxical, but dietary calcium reduces kidney stone risk while calcium supplements increase kidney stone risk. Also, vitamin C increases kidney stone risk, so it’s not recommended to TOsupplemental YOUR GOOD HEALTH take vitamin C. By Keith Roach, M.D. There are many places to find the oxalate content of food, starting with your dietician, but websites like www.lowoxalate.info and www.ohf.org have nice lists. There you can find many fruits and vegetables that have little or no oxalate, including broccoli, lettuce and cucumber. You do need to avoid spinach, beets and similar vegetables. As far as grains go, corn, rice and wild rice are good choices. ••• DEAR DR. ROACH: Is secondhand vapor (from the electronic cigarettes) harmful? -B.S.B. ANSWER: While the evidence that secondhand smoke from regular cigarettes is harmful to people around smokers, causing increased risks of lung cancer and heart disease, the data just aren’t clear about the vapor from electronic cigarettes. It is known that the vapor contains

nicotine and potentially cancer-causing chemicals, but the amounts are much lower than with regular cigarettes. These chemicals can be inhaled by nonsmokers if close enough and possibly absorbed through the skin. Electronic cigarettes, also called vaporizers, may help people quit smoking. That’s the only use for them that I would recommend, after which they should be eliminated. •••

How Safe Are They? By Doris A. Black

Although technology has improved, there is still a lot of controversy over air bags as a safety feature. All this controversy has led consumers to begin asking questions. Here is what some of the experts say. According to the mathematicians of the auto world, air bags have without a doubt saved lives. Specifically, about 4,000 drivers and nearly 800 passengers every year live through crashes annually because of air bags. Auto manufacturers claim that consumers have a 75% survival rate with the combination of seat belts and air bags. In spite of these statistics, some deaths have occurred with the

use of early generation air bags, when adult passengers or drivers were thrown forward during impact while the air bag simultaneously deployed. The auto industry has responded by creating dual-stage air bags. There are certain segments of the population that air bags could potentially harm. These include persons with certain medical conditions or persons of small stature, which is why air bag on/ off switches are now available. Air bag switches are not automatically installed in the latest model cars, but they can be installed at the owner's request, allowing you to turn the air bag on or off when you want. Advanced air bag regulations will go into effect over the next eight years in stages. This year, auto makers are introducing supplemental restraint systems working in conjunction with advanced frontal air bags to automatically deploy when certain conditions are met. The "smart" technology evaluates the situation to determine if the severity of the crash warrants an air bag and the level of power the air bag inflates. Factors considered are: occupant size, crash severity, use of seat belt and seat position, and/or driver distance from air bag. For example, if a person is dangerously close to the air bag, it may not deploy or may deploy with less pressure. If it senses that a child or person of small stature is sitting in the passenger seat, a light will indicate that the air bag has been turned off. Vehicles with these new air bags are required to display a warning label on the sun visor referring to the owner's manual for details. There are a few retailers nationwide who

specialize in air bag switch installation. They are Air Bag Options, (888) 903-0004, and Airbag Service, (800) 2247224. Another way to locate a dealer in your area qualified to install an on/off switch is to log on to www.nhtsa.dot.gov/ airbags/switch_install/index. cfm. Whenever there is a controversy about something, there are experts for both sides. Who's to say who is right or wrong. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to decide what is right for them.
