There are few names in the Arabian horse world that command the reverence and admiration of Ali Jamaal. More than a horse, Ali Jamaal was a phenomenon — a stallion whose charisma, refinement, and spirit forever changed the direction of Arabian horse breeding. This is not just a story of his victories or his
pedigree. This is a tribute to the soul of a horse who carried greatness in every fiber of his being.
Foaled on March 21, 1982, in Muskegon, Michigan, the bay colt bred by James Bergren stood out from the start. Sired by the legendary Ruminaja Ali and out of

Heritage Memory, Ali Jamaal was born into greatness. Yet no one, not even the Bergren brothers, could have predicted the profound impact he would make on the global Arabian horse community.
From the beginning, there was something different about Jamaal. His large, expressive eyes radiated intelligence and strength. His conformation was nearly flawless, his presence unforgettable. To witness him in his prime was to witness
the embodiment of equine elegance and Arabian type.
The name “Ali Jamaal” was chosen with care — inspired by basketball star Jamaal Wilkes, and saved by Tom Bergren for a colt worthy of such honor. It quickly became a name that echoed far beyond his birthplace.
In 1984, the young stallion was sent to David Gardner of Gardner Bloodstock

in Texas to be prepared for the 1985 U.S. Nationals. That year, he made history, winning the Unanimous U.S. National Champion Futurity Stallion title — a moment that marked not only a personal victory, but a historic achievement for the Bergrens. They became the first breeders to produce both a Futurity Champion stallion (Ruminaja Ali) and a son who claimed the same title.
But Jamaal’s destiny extended beyond
accolades. At that 1985 Nationals, his beauty captivated a man named Doug Dahmen, who immediately recognized the stallion’s extraordinary potential. An initial inquiry revealed a steep price tag, but Doug’s instincts wouldn’t let go. A few weeks later, he returned to see Jamaal again, and his admiration only deepened.
At the same time, Doug was close friends with a relatively new Arabian

horse enthusiast — Lenita Perroy. The Brazilian breeder had begun building her program with the influence of El Shaklan and was looking for a foundation stallion to shape the future of her farm, Haras Meia Lua.
During a 1986 visit to California, Lenita told Doug, “I’m ready for THE stallion.” Doug knew instantly who she needed. Lenita agreed without hesitation — but
he insisted she see Jamaal in person. She flew to Texas and then Michigan, cash in hand, having liquidated assets and even sold a farm to make the purchase. Days later, she returned home with no receipt, no paperwork, and no horse — only her confident smile. “Don’t worry,” she told a nervous Doug. “They like me.”
And indeed, they did. Within weeks, Ali Jamaal was on his way to Brazil. In

November 1986, he stepped onto the land where he would become a legend.
Brazil had never seen anything like him. While some were skeptical of his outcross pedigree — linebred Nazeer on linebred Ferseyn — time silenced the critics. His foals matured into champions. The initial results, though subtle, grew into a tidal wave of admiration as his offspring aged with grace and distinction.
His first Brazilian foal crop included future greats like Nyhl el Jamaal and Ludjin el Jamaal — names now cemented in the global Arabian pedigree. Breeders from Europe, South America, and beyond began seeking out his progeny.
By 1988, Doug suggested Ali Jamaal deserved one more chapter in the U.S. — not for breeding, but for greatness in the show ring. Lenita agreed. Back in
Ali

Santa Ynez, California, he was prepped for a final campaign. To handle him in the ring, Doug and Lenita selected Greg Gallun, a decision made not just with logic, but instinct.
In 1989, Ali Jamaal captured the Pacific Slope Champion, Canadian National
Champion, and U.S. Reserve National Champion Stallion titles. But Greg and his brother Brad knew the crown still awaited. With gentle persistence, they convinced Lenita to try again in 1990.
And that year, before a packed and breathless crowd, Ali Jamaal became

U.S. National Champion Stallion — in what many still recall as the most competitive stallion class in history.
He returned once more to Brazil, this time to stay. From there, his legacy expanded across continents. His daughters and sons became the foundation for programs in Europe, South America, the Middle East, and beyond. His bloodlines enriched nations. His “Jamaal look” — that unmistakable presence, the arched neck, the luminous eye — became a mark of excellence.
And always, Lenita was at his side.
She gave him a life of royalty. His paddock overlooked a lake. His shelter was built for comfort. His mares, handpicked for quality and type. She bred him
with intelligence and vision, creating not just champions but a dynasty.
Even decades later, Jamaal’s descendants fill pastures with their beauty, unmistakably carrying his spirit. In 2014, Haras Meia Lua still shimmered with the glow of his influence. One look at a mare like Jullye el Ludjin and you’d understand — Ali Jamaal didn’t just pass on traits. He passed on soul.
I had the privilege of visiting Haras Meia Lua in 2012 and 2013. Jamaal was old by then, but his power hadn’t faded. He no longer had the sharpness of youth, but his presence — regal, commanding, magnetic — remained undiminished. At 32, he still made grown men cry. You didn’t need to know his story to feel his royalty. He was the story.

With Lenita’s passing, and Ali Jamaal’s before her, an era has closed. Haras Meia Lua — once the cradle of modern Arabian greatness — no longer echoes with hoofbeats. But the legacy lives on. In bloodlines. In memories. In every foal that bears the Jamaal spirit.
Ali Jamaal was never just a horse. And Lenita was never just his breeder. Together, they built a legacy that transcends time. A King and his Queen — now reunited — whose influence still gallops through pastures across the world.
Their story is not over. It lives on, four generations deep, in the shining eyes and arched necks of Arabian horses who carry their dream forward. m
“The aura and mystic of Ali Jamaal is profound. There are stallions , a short list of stallions whom add credibility to a pedigree. Jamaal is one of those stallions. His beauty and courage are so rare, that’s what made him special. We are so proud to have been a part of his life and had the honor of seeing him on a daily basis. He made you know why one can fall in love with Arabian horses. The respect that he and Lenita Perroy have earned together is well deserved. He was born a king and will be one forever”
– Greg Gallun – Gallun Farms
“Since we liked Ali Jamaal as an individual and believed in its power as a stallion, my brother Vico and I have always kept in our Haras Clio a majority of horses with Jamaal blood. Among them the highlights were three colts purchased from Haras Meia Lua with ages from 5 to 11 months old. Ryad El Jamaal (x Roxana Elshaklan) was bought at 11 months of age and, after a brilliant career at the shows, was sold to Haras Vanguarda, where became the leading sire of National Champions in Brazil, including two National Champions bred by Haras Clio: the fillies Chammyra El Ryad (x Chammur) and Rywanna (x Marwan Crystal RCA). Arkane El Jamaal (x Terta Real) was purchased at 6 months of age and became National Champion Colt before being exported to the United States. The third was Yllan El Jamaal (x Acuity), chosen at Haras Meia Lua at five months of age. Yllan became a great success in reproduction and its progeny has been exported to 15 countries. We are currently using a grandson of Ali Jamaal, Aryes El Ludjin, whose daughters born in Brazil have the well known ‘Jamaal Look’ which we always like to have in our products.”
- Luiz Rocco – Haras Clio

“I came in contact with Lenita Perroy in 1992 and bought my first horse from her in 1993 - Lilyh El Jamaal, - and many many more to follow. This first horse from Lenita did not only create a backbone for my breeding program, through her daughter Lara El Ludjin, and her grandson Lawrence El Gazal, - but also has been the start of a wonderful friendship and a most important personal relationship for my whole life with Lenita. I have been told that I own the biggest collection of Ali Jamaal get and grand get worldwide and outside Haras Meja Lua, - this is an honour and my daily job. Ali Jamaal and his best offspring are standing in my humble opinion for beauty and quality. But with Ali Jamaal beauty has not only been expressed in a beautiful face, - he has been one of the very few stallions in breeding history which gave nearly all his children an unmistakable “Look” - combined with something absolutely unaffordable which is named ‘CLASS’!”
– Ferdinand Huemer – La Movida Arabians
“I was lucky enough to still see Ali Jamaal last year in November. Only few stallions ever give you the feeling of being close to a strong aura, Ali Jamaal gave me that feeling. Being around him made you feel humble and respectful, i enjoyed that. What stroke me was that none the less his age and the few ails that come with his age, this stallion is very update on the modern style and fashion we like so much today. Most stallions or mares you see back after 20 years you would say they aren’t anymore what we look for today but not Ali Jamaal he was a timeless beauty. I’m glad i can work with a few of his daughters and granddaughters, having seen Ali Jamaal i have leaned to understand and respect them even more. Thank you Ali Jamaal, rest in peace in the greater greens.”
– Bart van Buggenhout – Aljassimya Farm
“Ali Jamaal was my ideal. Because of my close association with him, Ali Jamaal became my foundation sire. He consistently provided me with outstanding versions of himself, both direct and line bred. I am grateful to Lenita Perroy and Ali Jamaal himself for the greatest opportunity in my life with Arabian Horses.”
- Doug Dahmen – Intara Arabians
“Ali Jamaal has inspired me to start breeding Arabian Horses. To me he is the ideal Arabian Horse and I feel very fortunate to not only have met him at his home in Brazil but also to own one of his daughters and to be surrounded by Ali Jamaal grandchildren and great grand children at my farm today.”
- Talitha Bakker - Arabian Stud Europe

... for everything you did for all of us. Your memory will live forever in us. You and Ali Jamaal will be always in our heart and in the hearts of every Arabian horse breeder. Lenita we miss you.

Matera is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its impressive historical cave architecture dating back to the Neolithic period in 1100 BC, which was inhabited until the 20th century. The lively history of the city and its surroundings also became part of the Arab settlement, which proclaimed the Emirate of Bari in the south of the Italian peninsula in 847 AD. There is evidence that the Arabs used Sicily and southern Italy for agriculture and successful horse breeding. To this day, traces of this can be found in the archaeology, language and mentality of the population. Arabian horse breeding continues to play an important role in southern Italy, but it suffers from the poor connections between the south and the centres of Europe with their events, shows and markets.

loro eventi sportivi, shows e mercati.

That’s why I set out to find the hidden gems, the horse breeding with heart and concept, and to report on them.
Raffaele Leone invited me to dinner in the old town of Montescaglioso, a village on the hill not far from Matera, with which it shares its history. The restaurant he runs with his brother is well worth a visit.
The fusion cuisine between tradition and international influence was impressive, as was the female Japanese DJ who provided live music. But even more impressive was the brewery in the adjoining vaults. After studying reproduction

and biotechnology in veterinary medicine, Raffaele gave up his job after five years in a clinic in northern Italy to come home and breed Arabian horses himself. However, in order to secure the project financially, he trained as a beer brewer and now successfully produces his own beers.
The next day, we drove to Policoro on the coast. This wellknown seaside resort with its long white sandy beaches was in the middle of the high season. The LEONE ARABIANS stud farm was just a few kilometres from the beach. It was wonderfully peaceful, except for the horses communicating with each other. His father, a doctor and former mayor of Policoro, had made his son’s dream come true by providing his land for the stables and large pastures for breeding horses. Almost 30 horses, stallions, mares and foals, some of them of high quality, ran in the paddocks and pastures. They all had great trust in Raffaele and his father, who enthusiastically supports the stud farm from behind the scenes. This is how horse breeding should be, one might say. A peaceful place for Arabian horses and their people.
My recommendation: Southern Italy is not only fascinatingly beautiful, but it also has many hidden gems, and Leone Arabians is one of them. You should definitely visit the stud farm.
What made you decide to breed Arabian horses?
I’ve always been passionate about horses, ever since I had to choose what to play with as a child. My grandfather, a master of life and horses, spent his life with animals, and I think I have this in my blood, while I owe my father the

fundamental lesson of living with passion and enthusiasm. It was 2000, I was 10 years old, and he gave me my first Arabian horse, a beautiful Russian/Polish filly from Michele Piazzola’s stud farm, K Shaga. This was the beginning of an endless love affair. We discovered what has become, for me and my family, the Arabian horse par excellence: elegant, sensitive, intelligent and big-hearted. After my university years, my degree in veterinary biotechnology and my experience in a clinic specialising in equine reproduction, I decided with my father to increase the breeding side of our passion. We started the stud farm and began to include Egyptian bloodlines in our breeding programme, which

we consider essential for creating a good genetic pool that results in the production of a complete horse. We produce three to six foals per year for the national and international breeding market.
Where do your broodmares come from? And what criteria did you use to select them?
Our vision is to create a specimen with a historical genetic heritage from the Arab countries of origin, crossed with show and sport breeding lines, to obtain an Arabian horse that evokes the past in its balance, but looks to the future with awareness, with a good genetic mix without extreme inbreeding. Currently, our stud farm has pure Egyptian broodmares and fillies from Ansata Nile Echo, Kais Al Bayda, True Colour, Kenz Al Baydaa, Naseem al Rashediah, and Salaa El Dine, as well as show broodmares and fillies from Aj Mardan, Shangai Ea, Magic Magnifique, and Marwan Al Shaqab. We try to consolidate and integrate positive genetic traits that are necessary for our programme, taking care not to stabilise

structural and behavioural defects, in order to produce a sound animal that can withstand market developments.
How important do you consider beauty to be? And functionality?
We aim to breed a recognisable and balanced horse, with strong limbs, broad foreheads and large eyes, which finds its functionality and enjoyment in light and harmonious movement and, in its relationship with humans, an irreplaceable reference point. They do not necessarily have to have extreme dish, but our foals must be of good type overall and possess charismatic movement. For us, the Arabian horse must remain an animal capable of facing the desert and emerging victorious.
Artificial reproduction is now practised in many countries. What prevents you from doing so?
We pay particular attention to mother/foal imprinting and natural breeding techniques without resorting to technological reproduction methods which, by not taking into account indirect genetic mechanisms such as epigenetics, contribute to the creation of problematic horses that are often incompatible with natural parental and reproductive balances. Breeding involves important

responsibilities, and we feel the weight of this in every mating, trying to give value to a good pedigree through a good horse, with the awareness that the two must coexist.
How do you see the future of your stud farm in southern Italy, a land originally ideal for breeding Arabian horses? I believe that the present and future of small Italian stud farms are in crisis, despite their unique expertise and professionalism, as well as enjoying a perfect habitat for breeding healthy and peaceful horses, particularly in the south thanks to the geographical conformation and climate.
If the National Association’s guidelines do not have as their main objective the protection of small breeders, who with their breeding interpretations represent the substrate that diversifies this world in a healthy way, we will be reduced to the proliferation of a few large breeders who will standardise the market and make it inaccessible to most, exactly as is happening in the world of shows.
What measures do you propose to improve the situation of small breeders?
There is a need to protect and incentivise small breeders with awards, applying the right restrictions for those coming from abroad and, moreover, restoring the right value to national foals. I see this world in deep crisis, in its methods and objectives, and if we take responsibility for understanding that not everything is up for auction, even passion will have to surrender to a world that is becoming a game for the very few.

HAREM STUD WISHES YOU A GREAT END OF THE YEAR AND ALL THE BEST FOR 2026

by Matteo Chincarini
In an artistic landscape dominated by glossy images, digital filters and a constant pursuit of aesthetic perfection, Andrea Fontanari’s work stands out for its sincere and direct view of everyday life. The young painter has revived the pleasure of direct observation, restoring value to an act that seemed to have been partly lost in the history of art: painting reality. After the advent of photography, many artists had in fact given up observing the world with the same desire for representation that had animated centuries of painting. Fontanari reverses this trend, and does so with a sensitivity capable of renewing contemporary figurative art.

His research starts from the ordinary to reveal its exceptional nature. Everyday objects, domestic gestures, glimpses of real life. Far from the constructed poses and visual stereotypes of digital communication, Fontanari captures the unexpected, the spontaneous, the seemingly secondary detail which, when put on canvas, takes on universal meaning.
His canvases depict an authentic, fragile and intimate world, made up of stolen moments rather than staged scenes. A cup left on the table, a messy room, a face lost in thought that escapes external narration: these are images we all know, but which are rarely celebrated. Fontanari gives dignity to everyday life, conferring monumentality on what
usually slips under the gaze. He does so by choosing large formats, as if to declare that everyday life, with its small gestures and silences, deserves the same space and attention that was once reserved for great historical or mythological scenes.
His painting style is unmistakable. His rapid, disjointed and almost chaotic brushstrokes, when viewed up close, appear to be independent fragments, splashes of colour that do not seek immediate harmony. But when viewed from a distance, the eye recomposes the image and perceives a surprising visual truth. The reality that emerges is never photographic, but filtered through the painter’s sensitivity: a truth that does not imitate but interprets. The sharp lights, often direct

and raw like the midday sun, give the subjects an aura of dramatic evidence. The dazzling colours, skilfully dosed, create vibrant atmospheres that convey not only the image but also the sensation of experiencing it.
In this sense, Fontanari is firmly part of the return to figurative art that has conquered contemporary art in recent years. However, this is not a stylistic revival or a mere exercise in representation. His painting is conceptual research, an interrogation of what is worth painting today. The artist does not choose noble subjects, nor does he succumb to traditional iconography or pure decorativism. On the contrary, he selects unexpected details, glimpses that would remain invisible in other contexts. Thus, an empty chair or a wide-open window become opportunities to reflect on the passing of time, on
the presences and absences that mark the human experience.
Among the recurring protagonists of his paintings is a discreet muse, a female figure always captured in her natural state. She never poses directly for the viewer, nor does she seek attention or impose herself as an idealised icon. She is often depicted engaged in her own activities, lost in thought, as if the artist were observing her with affection and respect from a necessary distance. She embodies a sense of truth that becomes a universal symbol, the portrait of everyday life that needs no artifice to be meaningful.
Fontanari’s ability to capture the essence of human relationships and transform it into powerful images has found recognition not only in the art world

but also in wider circles. The artist was selected to create one of the official posters for the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. His work, entitled Together we play, together we transform, celebrates sport as an opportunity for encounter, respect and solidarity. Not just a competitive event, but a space in which humanity recognises itself as a community. The poster reflects the same approach that characterises his painting: restoring value to shared moments, to the collective acts that define our existence.
In an age where reality is constantly filtered and manipulated, Andrea Fontanari’s art reminds us of the importance of direct vision, attention to detail and the value of simplicity.
His works take us back to the most authentic dimension of human experience: one that does not need to be dramatised to be true.
With quick, luminous brushstrokes, colours that vibrate with energy, and subjects that belong to everyone’s life, Fontanari offers a style of painting that speaks to the present and reaffirms the power of figurative art as a critical, poetic and necessary tool. In his work, the everyday becomes extraordinary and simple gestures are transformed into icons. It is in this tension that the strength of his language lies: a style of painting that looks at reality without artifice and, precisely for this reason, manages to touch the viewer deeply.

THOSE WHO LOVE, PROTECT. TO PROTECT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FORM OF THE VERB 'TO LOVE. Bruno ferrero
Nowadays, the presence of Equine illness is making the industry ask more and more questions. There is a lot of knowledge from the veterinary point of view but not so much from the economic and insurance side. Let’s analyse how we can protect our “equestrian heritage”.
Whether we own a horse for leisure or business, he represents a financial commitment, as well as a time and energy expenditure and needs daily and beyond ordinary care. In fact, horses can easily get sick, or they can be prone to accidents that require swift intervention that very often is very expensive.
In these cases, health insurance can be very helpful. Insurance companies offer various policies to assist with individual needs, such as, for instance, basic policies which covers death. Often it also includes cover for colic that can be lethal in horses, with a pre-determined cover amount.
Commonly clients do ask for extra cover, such as surgical intervention, medical expenses, veterinarian expenses and clinical examinations in order to have a broader cover.
Moreover, if a breeder was taking an insurance policy, it would be useful to add to the cover the loss of the broodmare or of the foal in case of still birth or death during delivery. It is also useful to insure the stallion in case of permanent impotence, sterility or inability to reproduce caused by illness or accidents. These warranties allow the equestrian professional to have substantial financial support which may be indispensable to carry on their business.
The pain of the accident or loss can’t be erased, but this support can at least alleviate the financial urgencies. These might allow the horse owner to receive more financial flexibility which could open the doors to more exclusive and expensive treatments which could save our horses lives and would be unaffordable without the insurance cover.

Fine, delicate yet powerful lines: Profilo sculptures elevate metal wire into a timeless memory, a gesture of style, a precious gift that speaks of elegance, strength, and identity. Founded in Paris in 2015 by the designer Andrew Vianello together with Laurence Rancé, the Profilo brand immediately stood out for its originality and was soon welcomed by the Department Store Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche, quickly capturing the hearts of an international clientele. Bronze, silver, wire: noble materials that, in the hands of the brand’s artisans, are shaped into light and pure forms that encapsulate memory’s essence. Each sculpture is born from a minimal yet intense gesture, one that seizes profound emotions with the delicacy of a line.
Among Profilo’s most fascinating chapters is the one dedicated to the Equestrian Lifestyle: a profile portrait of a galloping horse, a depiction that unites horse and rider, preserving the memory of an unforgettable race. Each Profilo piece is crafted with meticulous attention to detail to capture the strength, elegance, and beauty of this noble animal, with the possibility of customizing the base - whether in bronze, marble, or lacquered woodwith the horse’s name or a symbol inscribed on it, creating unique pieces that preserve an emotional bond.
Sizes range from the most classic formats to king-size versions, for those who desire an important and scenic work. For a contemporary and innovative touch, the sculptures are also available in a mirror version, where reflective metal creates a unique play of light and shadow.
Profilo creations are crafted with artisanal mastery, blending tradition and modernity to create works of art capable of enriching any space. Each unique piece is made either from a photograph provided by the client or by choosing directly from the models in the collection.
Among Profilo’s most striking creations are also its sculptures of coats of arms and logos, true emblems sculpted, capable of transforming a heraldic symbol or a corporate logo, into a work of art, enriching personal collections and prestigious spaces.
Andrew Vianello’s sculptures have been chosen as prizes or exclusive gifts from sectors ranging from automotive to sports - including a prestigious luxury car race on the French Riviera - and have been featured as a partner of the French Porsche Club Unxpected, extending to fashion and luxury hospitality. Today, Profilo is distributed through concept stores, art galleries, boutiques, and department stores, from Milan to Tokyo, Paris to Rome, Capri to Zurich, Genoa to New York, as well as on Artemest’s e-shop, where both sur mesure collections and unlimited editions are available.
